Actor Jackie Chan Reportedly Calls for Fewer Rights in Hong Kong: ‘Regulations on What Can & Cannot Be Protested’

HONG KONG (AP) — Jackie Chan suggests in a recent interview that protests should be restricted in the freewheeling Chinese city of Hong Kong.

The action star lamented that Hong Kong has become a city of protests, where people “scold China, scold the leaders, scold anything, protest against anything.

“There should be regulations on what can and cannot be protested,” Chan told the Southern People Weekly, which published his comments Wednesday. He didn’t say what kinds of protests he thought should be restricted.

The star of movies such as “Rush Hour” and “Rumble in the Bronx” triggered a backlash three years ago with similar comments on the need to restrict freedom in his hometown.

A former British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 and is now a semiautonomous region. Residents are fiercely proud of the Western-style civil liberties they enjoy that are not seen on the mainland, including the freedom to demonstrate.

The city has been the scene lately of a rising number of protests by people upset with their Beijing-backed leader, Leung Chun-ying, a lack of full democracy and worries about Beijing’s growing influence on the city.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in July to protest after Leung took office.

In 2009, Chan sparked outrage among lawmakers in Hong Kong when said he said, “I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not.” He also said he was “beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled.”

A representative for Chan did not respond to request for comment.

Ahhhh but the camel’s head is under the tent Jackie. China will soon implode with mass demonstrations and worker’s right protests. All you Libs that use Apple – hmmmm, that is a red icon right? – products but try to lecture us on fairness while your support of Apple enslaves thousands in China, will have to start whinning how fairness really doesn’t apply to the Chinese cause they aren’t really human. REVOLT MY CHINESE BROTHERS, DEFEAT BLACKIE WHO IS HOLDING YOU DOWN. Now wasn’t opium the original entitlement in China ! Legalize pot….hmmmmm keeping them stupid and addicted. No wonder we can’t win elections.

Jackie, I’m disappointed. If you feel that demonstrations need to be restricted, then you must also agree with limiting freedom of speech. Martial arts are not just a form of self-defense, but also a freedom of expression. You of all people should know this! The control needed to keep peace needs to come from within oneself, not from the government which can and eventually WILL become complete suppression and control of all aspects of people’s lives.

Because one is the world champion YoYo-ist, does not mean one knows squat about politics. The same goes for actors. But the same can be said about Ivy league educated idiots, that might have a specialized knowledge in a subject, and in their arrogance assume they have a better ability to comment on everything because of a diploma they received 20 years ago…

None has said it better than Thomas Sowell:

If he is so against it, then why does he live there? Why doesn’t he just move to the main land and live like the rest of the citizenry? UNDER COMMUNISM!! He wouldn’t be out protesting those who protest if he did!

Just another illustration of why actors should limit themselves to acting and at all other times have duct tape over their mouths. Duct tape over their ears wouldn’t be a bad idea either. It will stop that annoying “sweet potato whistle” caused by the air rushing through their empty heads.

Here is the issue. Anyone ever notice it’s the rich brain dead that don’t get it? They support everyone else’s misery because they are not the ones putting 1/3rd of their paycheck a week into their gas tanks and then being taxed to death from every angle. The lack of freedom is the “bottom up” part. It effects the poor first. That’s why these morons don’t get it.

One more to add to the list of not getting a penny from me. Shame too I liked some of his work.

I believe you are correct on this. That probably explains why most of Hollywood are leftists; trying to advance the next Great Depression.

Well, he got his, so what does he have to care about? I mean hey, freedom is great when you go out and make millions of dollars making second tier B kung fu movies with B list American actors. But after you’ve got yours, there’s no need to still enjoy freedom. Nope.

Mr. Chan is the unfortunately all too common product of jock culture. Great at what he does, but very little mental capacity outside of his occupation.

Wait until Jackie wants to protest then it will be ok.I’m sure Jackie likes to be free but If Jackie doesn’t agree with you then freedom is no good. Right Jackie? Then lets takeaway your freedom Jackie and see if freedom is a good thing or not. Wow, only a moron would ponder whether or not freedom is a good thing.

China has always been in turmoil throughout its history with revolutions, civil wars, etc. There fake economy with the ghost cities is going to backfire on the Chinese government real soon. If he does not enjoy or want to protect the freedom to protest one’s government then maybe he should move to Cuba or Venezuela where they have even fewer rights than the Chinese. Then lets see how he feels about freedom. Maybe Jeffery Immelt from GE can join him as state run economies and communism is so great

Jerks the entire lot of them. They enjoy the freedoms of the US and what is left of our capitalist system in America then say this cr@p. After that comment I will not be watching or purchasing any of his movies.
