MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Quickly Laments Lack of Gun Control in Wake of School Shooting: ‘Gun Violence Has Been Epidemic in This Country’

In the immediate aftermath of the Connecticut elementary school shooting in Newtown, MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell was quick to bring up gun control, lamenting that there doesn’t seem to be enough of it.

Before any facts of the shooting were known (such as what type of gun was used or even the mental state of the shooter), Mitchell rattled off gun control issues championed by the left:

“When we talk about gun violence in this country, we’re not talking about Second Amendment rights. We’re talking about…reasonable background checks, reasonable controls, automatic weaponry and ammo, the multiple rounds that cause the greatest amount of violence. … Gun violence has been epidemic in this country going back decades. And we go through temporary periods…where we have an assault weapon ban, and then it is permitted to expire, David.”

But in what might shock some, colleague David Gregory threw some cold water on her hot comments, cautioning her to wait until more information was available.

“We know the contours of this debate, and it will get heated after an appropriate period of mourning and absorbing this tragedy. But it is worth adding all sides of the debate,” he cautioned. “We don’t know what the motive is here. We don’t know more about the shooter. We don’t know about the weapon involved. What we know is this is another horrible case of gun violence.”

After Mitchell cut to an interview with one of the children in the school at the time, he continued: “There’s so many facts that we just don’t know, so we shouldn’t speculate about.”

Another contributor later piped up: “And of course gun control not an issue at all in the presidential campaign.”

And even though Gregory did somewhat entertain that thought, he cautioned again that “even if the starting point is we have an epidemic of gun violence…how do we address this that doesn’t just automatically go to the place of gun control. Again, in this situation we have no idea, what the access to weapons here, what any of those factors were, and we won’t speculate on that.”

Watch it unfold, below:

Later on in her show, Mitchell brought on Jeffrey Goldberg from The Atlantic. Goldberg was quick to criticize gun laws and even said the gun lobby doesn’t want “any background checking whatsoever” (a dubious claim), but then added that it’s still wrong for the left to “demonize” legal gun owners:

This story has been updated with additional video and quotes.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

There is an epidemic in this country, it’s suffered by the left and causing them to turn this country into a socialist utopia for elite progressives who think they’re smart and want the rest of us dummies to live under their stupid self seving world view as their personal slaves. Guns may not insure this won’t happen, but it will certainly slow the onslot. When Union thugs start wearing the white robes, they made famous after the civil war, and show up at a location where you are ,a firearm can make a major statement without uttering a word, Andrea is concerned that when the public finds out what she and her’s are up to, they will come to her place of work, or maybe where she lives, haul her out at the end of a shot gun, tar and feather her and send her packing to, say, Cuba.

Actually gun violence is down along with just about every other crime in recent years. And stricter gun control laws would not have prevented this murderous rampage, look at the guy in China that stabbed over 20 people in a school with a knife. This is so absurd-guns don’t kill people any more than an axe , knife, or baseball bat does. People kill people! Why not look at our society to see where this sickness starts? There were still guns around 50 years ago when I was growing up and we never saw anything like we are seeing now. Seems to be happening on a regular basis. It is inconceivable how a person could be so evil and callous to kill little innocent children-my heart goes out to their parents.

I think this man’s problems were long in the making. Normal people do not just get up one morning and say “I’m going to go kill a bunch of young children”.

I live in Illinois and the state is broke. Even after doubling the state sales tax it hasn’t helped. I’m not blaming either party since both like to blow taxpayers money these days, but what is being cut here to try to balance the budget? Programs for the disabled, and mentally ill.

If this man had been crying out for help like I know many are and not getting it, then we need to find a way to cut back on grants for things like the sex life of frogs or whatever cause celeb of the moment that can survive without our tax dollars so that we can afford to help those in real need.

Gun control is not the problem. Here in IL we have strict gun laws but criminals always get access. We need to help people BEFORE they get to the point they even contemplate hurting someone else.

My prayers go out to these families. My grandmother lost her 10 year old son to a drunk driver just days after Christmas back in the 50s and she carried that pain every Christmas until she died. I’m sure these families are going to need a lot of prayers and support to get through this.

JMJ6391 is exactly right. Mental health services across the country are being gutted in sacrifice to fiscal constraint while “vote getting” yet wasteful funding remains intact. MH services are not a luxury but an absolute necessity for the millions of Americans who are truly suffering. It is highly unusual for someone with a MH disorder to take such violent, aggressive action; most often they are the victims of violence. Although we still don’t know enough about what was going on in this situation, I suspect that somewhere along the way the accessibility and quality of MH services probably played a role.

The moral compass of the nation has steadily eroded over many years. Violence and massacre is a common theme in movies and games. Political arguments for the termination of pregnancy late in the third trimester disdain the use of the word “life”.
Even people capable of such murderous atrocity once, at least, felt some societal restraint. Mentally ill? Probably, but there was a time before computerized massacre games, realistic TV depictions of brutal crimes, and realistic massacre movies when he might have to have thought a bit harder to come up with this idea.

More churches & synagogues will get protection. Look where the high scores have been. Church & synagogue massacres have been averted with low loss of life. Mall shootouts have not been all that productive (from the criminal view point). School shooting have been (FROM A CRIMINAL’S VIEWPOINT) highly productive.

It is much easier for a congregation, a smaller body of people, to come to a consensus & become a hard target. Malls have many people but they are also large. It is easier to scatter. Some have security & some people will have CCW.

Most schools on the other hand are liberal controlled zones. Go figure

It does not cause blindness, constipation, heart attack, stroke, seizues, nausea, loss of appetite, shakiness, premature ***********, rash, loss of sex drive (kinda), sweating, liver failure, its non-habit forming, and you can drink alcohol while taking it. If the govt would put it in the same category as perscription drugs, with many having the prestated side effects, then maybe hardcore research could be done to find ts true potential to help people. This young man had a problem with his “mom”. She must have done something that really upset him. She’s gone, he’s gone, so who knows why he went beserk. We may never know, but I do know one thing, gun laws will not make a difference. If a person is this sick, they will find a way to do what they want.

It’s also obivious that “O” can’t stay out of the limelight and will be on at 3:00 PM. We know he’s already ordered help from all government departments, and the parents can’t be ready to see “O”. He just wants to make himself seem “important”. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Sad world we’re living in….

    To Andrea Mitchell,
Children died today, their parents are suffering. I can see you do not understand how they must feel or even consider their feelings. This is a day to pray for the parents and the survivors. It is a terrible and devastating day. So, for once do not use something so sad to promote your Socialist/Communist agenda that includes violence and threats. We do not want to hear it!!!!

    BLAST THEM ALL ALREADY!!!

The Democrats cannot even wait a day or an hour before spinning this great disaster to their gain and blaming the ‘lack of gun control.’ May God’s judgement be delivered upon all such people soon!!!

What do you suppose God’s judgement will be on those who wish ill to the people who are appalled by a violent tragedy and only seek to prevent others from experiencing something like it in their own lives?

      Reconcile THIS

“There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China in recent years, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the country’s economic boom.

The rash of violence has prompted public calls for more measures to protect the young in a country where many couples only have one child.

In 2010, a man slashed 28 children, two teachers and a security guard in a kindergarten in eastern China.”

      http://news.yahoo.com/knife-wielding-man-injures-22-children-china-064458804.html

It is people that need to control themselves. If we control people then we become BORGlike. Controlling things will keep a lid on it for a while, but it will bubble over especially after disgruntled people start copycatting.

Face it, you are not a good person. you are a BORG Queen wannabe.

Rosie, you are not seeking to “prevent this from happening to others.” You are politicizing it to gain ground on an agenda item. If you really cared about people, you’d be more interested in the WHY than the HOW. But, let’s not let rational thought get in the way of your progressive agenda.

Why doesn’t Andrea address the fact that we’ve got a generation of people who are not emotionally mature and are ill-equipped to handle the everyday frustrations and disappointments of life? They think they are protecting a child’s feelings with the “no winner/loser” sports, participation trophies, “feel good” approach to education…but every time they do this, they are robbing children of the opportunity to gain the skills to deal with disappointment. Then when a big matter comes up, they implode–and we will never know what, when, where, they could snap or what they will choose to use.

      desert-
the liberal mindset is the cause of this murder and most others. Most murders are committed by democrat voters. Democrat is the party of criminals and mental disease. The gun control act of 1968 has increased the amount of murders in this country, not lessened them. Without the 2nd amendment you have no other rights.

Funny, considering all of these shootings happen in gun-free zones. I have never heard of someone shooting up a gun store or a gun range.

      Give Andrea Mitchell a break.

      Check her biography.

If she did not criticize us & try to run our lives by influencing law makers, her life would be empty.

Andrea…let it go…you are not smart enough to speak on this topic…this is about mental illness and evil. The guns where just the way he chose to administer the evil. If it wasn’t guns it would have been something else. I realize as a “reporter” you are trying to get the jump on your colleges but for now you just need to zip it. There are people to bury and grieving to do.

Yeah, I’d like to see the list of the scripts censored words. I did not expect their epithet for a member of the southern rural working class to be censored. I wonder about the N-word, descended from Old Norse hnøggr, akin to Latin cinis for ashes (W7NCD).
