Columbine Victim’s Mom Tells Megyn Kelly About ‘Trauma’ & ‘Loss’ Following Shooting: ‘Right Now, These Parents Can’t Imagine Hope’

Beth Nimmo knows tragedy well. Her daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. This afternoon, she appeared on “America Live,” where she told anchor Megyn Kelly about the emotions she’s feeling in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. She also attempted to help the public understand what survivors and victims’ families are going through.

“My first reaction was — extremely angry. So angry that a man would kill babies — these are babies,” Nimmo said, her emotions clearly showing through. “And — as far as the parents go, they’re not going to know what hit them for a long, long time.”

As for her own experience, the mother, whose son, Craig, survived the Columbine tragedy, shared her path from grief to renewal.

“It was like there were times where it was very real and other times when it was surreal,” Nimmo said of the days and months following the murderous rampage.

As for today’s shooting in Connecticut, she feels deeply for the families and the pain she knows they are feeling.

“My heart’s racing and I just feel like these parents — they’re going to hurt so bad for so long — and there’s not much you can do to console someone like this,” Nimmo lamented, nothing, though, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Kelly asked the mother if, indeed, she found happiness again in her life. While it took quite a long time, Nimmo said that life did eventually improve.

“You know what, we did, but it came much, much later,” Nimmo responded. “There does come a day when you don’t cry all day long — there does come a day when the fear of pain and loss isn’t so evident and is not so penetrating…so right in your face.”

She said that her heart breaks for the children and families, alike. There are no shortcuts when it comes to recovery and going through the grieving process, Nimmo added.

“Right now, these parents can’t imagine hope. All they understand is the trauma and loss,” she told Kelly.

We go to great measures as a society to protect our valuables. Many people state that the most precious thing they have is their Children. If they are our most precious valuable, why is it unreasonable to have armed Administration and Staff in our schools? Everyone is ok with Armed guards and armored trucks that deliver cash, why not protect something that is more valuable in the same manner?

    Fight Fire With Fire
These shooter prey on the innocent and unarmed. We put our kids safety in the hands
of the Teachers and the School to keep them safe.
All school districts should encourage Teachers and Administrators to be armed. This
would deter any violence and mitigate any attack.
Staying proactive instead of reacting after the
fact is the only way to protect our kids.

I am so very sorry for the parents of these children. I wish there was some way to ease their pain, bring their children back. I don’t know these people but I sit at my computer and cry.

I will pray for all of you. Turn to God in your greatest hour of need may he ease your pain. I am truly sorry for all of your losses.

EVERY LIBERAL IN THIS COUNTRY HAS THE BLOOD OF THOSE KIDS ON THEIR HEADS http://youtu.be/dozLXYNWYQQ

Gun free zones just insured that the shooter could walk right into the school and kill all those kids.

You liberal IDIOTS are to blame, every liberal may as well had a gun in their hands and did the deed themselves you pack of IDIOTS

They the parents are going to go to sleep and wake up and think it was just a bad dream. Then it will hit them. Over and over and over again. I lost a child I know.

I’m sorry, but Meghan Kelly is using this tragedy, as is the mother of the girl murdered at Columbine, as a vehicle to further themselves. I find it really disgusting that these type of people will stoop to this level. Children, as well as adults, were murdered. Why can’t the news media (all of them) stop trying to elevate themselves and start reporting just the facts? That’s really all we need at this point. Opinions can wait for another day.

Fox news is exploiting the parents as well as the children who survived.
These children should be getting help for the trauma rather than appearing on the Fox News shows and being forced to relive it!
      Shame on you Fox News!
It’s all about the story; isn’t it???

Today my Mother would be 85 and anyone who has lost a loved one, or a parent early in life knows how difficult it is. Grieving is normal, and to grieve is good. It’s a healing process. The parents of these children will never forget losing their children, and only time, and prayers will heal them. Their belief in God, help from their community, interaction from other parents, love, hope, and constant thearpy, will be needed for all involved.
It’s sad that one person (a deranged young man) could be such a monster. What could upset anyone this much? This is so sad, but obviously not something all schools should be worried about today, but future work to provide the best in security starting next week.
