Here Are the Confusing Things About the Conn. School Shooting That Got Reported Wrong
Editor’s note: This post contains strong language that may be offensive to some readers

Responders gather at the scene of a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School with police tape surrounding a vehicle on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-seven are dead, including 20 children, after a gunman identified as Adam Lanza in news reports, opened fire in the school. Lanza also reportedly died at the scene. (Credit: Getty Images)
UPDATE 10:40 p.m. EST: The Associated Press now reports:
At least one parent said Lanza’s mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the law enforcement official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.
The reason for the confusion over the mother’s role at the school is unclear at this point. Either way, more details will continue to emerge in the coming days.
–
UPDATE 8:37 p.m. EST: ABC News is reporting that the gunman’s mother was teacher’s aide at school and not a teacher, according to officials. However, the Associated Press, as of 8:27 p.m. EST, was still reporting that the gunman’s mother was a teacher at the Connecticut school. It is unclear which is correct, but stay tuned for updates.

As news organizations scrambled to be the first to identify the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter on Friday, the media focused on the Facebook profile of one “Ryan Lanza” of Newtown, Conn after some initial reports identified “Ryan Lanza” as the shooter. However, it was later revealed that the shooter’s name was actually Adam Lanza.
But at that point, Ryan Lanza’s Facebook profile — and his picture — had been passed around the Internet. The Facebook debacle caught a number of news outlets off guard.
Fox News:
Mediaite:
Buzzfeed:
Gawker:
And of course, this doesn’t include the speculation fueled by social media. Almost immediately, Ryan Lanza began denying that he was actually the shooter.
“F*ck you CNN it wasn’t me,” Ryan Lanza wrote on his Facebook page.
“I’m on the bus home now it wasn’t me…IT WASN’T ME I WAS AT WORK IT WASN’T ME,” he later posted.
The two men are not void of ties though. Ryan Lanza is reportedly the brother of the real shooter, Adam Lanza. Police in Hoboken were reportedly questioning the 24-year-old sibling, according to The New York Post. He is not considered a suspect.
Adam Lanza, 20, is suspected of opening fire Friday inside the Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked as a teacher, killing 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in their classrooms and trembled helplessly to the sound of gunfire reverberating through the building.
Per Slate’s Josh Levin:
According to public records searches, Ryan and Adam Lanza have both lived at 36 Yogananda St. in Newtown. A Nancy Lanza is also listed at that address. News reports indicate that Nancy is the mother of Ryan and Adam, that she worked at Sandy Hook Elementary as a teacher, and that she is presumed dead. The Hartford Courant is reporting that, in addition to the 26 victims found at Sandy Hook Elementary School, “another person was found dead at 36 Yogananda St. in Newtown.” The Courant does not identify the person found dead at that address, but CBS News and CNN are now reporting that Lanza’s mother was found dead in her home.
Public records searches also show that the same Ryan Lanza who lived in Newtown has recently shared an address in Hoboken, N.J., with people named Jessica O’Brien and Michael Shapiro. The circulated screenshots of Ryan Lanza’s Facebook account show responses from a Jessica O’Brien and a Michael Shapiro. In response to Lanza posting “Everyone shut the f*ck up it wasn’t me,” O’Brien wrote: “Do you need anything ready for when you get home? Can I set anything out for you to grab and go? Anything else I can do L”. In response to Lanza writing “F*ck you CNN it wasn’t me,” Shapiro wrote “this is batsh*t insane” and “how the f*ck do they jump to such a conclusion with zero evidence.”
The instance is reminiscent of when ABC’s Brian Ross speculated that a Tea Party member named Jim Holmes could be the Aurora, Colo. shooter based on a Google search. It turned out that the shooter was a completely different James Holmes and it created a number of problems for the man that Ross wrongfully pointed to.
Do you think some media outlets publicized Ryan Lanza’s identity before enough information was available?

Maybe the kid is an avid gamer. There is no proof of such that I’ve seen, so it’s total speculation. He was autistic, and maybe he got some joy from gaming.
But gay? Maybe. Statistically it’s possible. But there is absolutely nothing anywhere that even remotely implies that he is gay or even straight. To be honest, I’m not sure how sexuality develops in autistic children. It’s completely pointless and somewhat stupid of you to bet he is gay, since the odds are very much against you, statistically.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 12:33amI have never accused a tea party member of going on a shooting spree. I don’t think they’re stupid, they might love having guns, and even love using guns, but I don’t think they will do things that will obviously turn the public against the second amendment. I really don’t like guns myself, but until the second amendment is revoked it’s a fairly fundamental right in this country to own guns and I am a HUGE fan of any fundamental and/or constitutionally granted rights. It’s what separates America from Russia, which I hear is a pretty sucky place to live.
I’m sure the Tea Party has had a lot of blame, but you can fight fire with fire or fight fire with extinguisher. People blame the Tea Party? Call them out on it, show that there’s absolutely nothing to base that blame on. Going on to do the same thing doesn’t help.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 12:39amThere is something to your gay statement though. I know of no gay school shooters, most depressed gay kids just kill themselves. Many of the kids that go to kill other classmates were bullying for being perceived as gay but were likely straight. (Read: “Adolescent Masculinity,
Homophobia, and Violence”, M. S. KIMMEL, M. MAHLER) It’s very possible bullies teased this kid for being gay. Although I haven’t been able to find anything to support that. And by no means does that excuse his or their behavior in any way. Many kids face that bullying, it takes an evil mind to take it that far. But I’d like to see what happens when homophobic bullying goes down in schools. Say 1 in every million kids that faces this bullying shoots their classmates. I made that statistic up. But maybe if we reduce the pool of bullying victims, we’d reduce the number of kids who have the combination of being bullied, having extremely violent thoughts, have access to dangerous weapons, and have mental issues that make them completely disregard their future.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 8:57amThe guns belonged to his mother. He got them at her house (she was responsible for keeping the guns safe as a gun owner) then went on his rampage. Now watch Obama use this as an excuse to take away our guns… This will cause more issues and if you do not have anything to defend yourself with, more killings will occur because the illegal gun holders know that there are no legal guns defending their property. Stay away from the 2nd amendment. With that said, I pray for the the families who have lost loved ones and believe me when I say I cried for these victims and I did not even know them. I pray this country will reunite and watch over each other and stop the left and right bickering and raise our children to be good loving and God-fearing citizens. God Bless the USA!

Our rights are inalienable and bestowed upon us by our Creator. The constitution merely recognizes this as fact and guarantees us that our government will not try to restrict my God given rights. As far as your statement “until the 2nd amendment is revoked”, ain’t gonna happen and even if it did, wouldn’t change a thing. My rights come from God, not man or a piece of paper. We can also ban Jamie Fox then we will not have to worry about serving ritz crackers and cheese, and insulting black racist actors.

Why would a boy be riding a bus posting on Facebook when his mom and brother were dead at his brother’s hands? Ignore the aunt who says if kid had mental health problem mother would have gotten him help. What about a much more sinister setup like fast & furious that hypnotized this young man to do this so they could further a political agenda “for the greater good”. Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:16pmWell he can sue them, but there’s a higher standard than mere negligence for invasion of privacy/defamation actions against the press than mere negligence GENERALLY. The Supreme Court has made an exception for private individuals in defamation actions, and SEEMS like it might also have done so for invasions of privacy actions, although the case law is less than clear on this point at the moment (with jurisdictions being split on whether a reduced standard, i.e. ordinary care, is owed to private individuals in invasion of privacy causes of action where the press is a defendant; the majority hold to the more conservative, which is to say not in the political sense but the interpretative sense, interpretation that allowed private individual plaintiffs to recover in defamation actions against the press on showing negligence did NOT extend to invasion of privacy actions). If CT follows the majority rule, Ryan would have to prove the press either consciously knew he wasn’t the shooter but published anyway, or that they knew of reasons to believe there was substantial risk that the story they were publishing was false (i.e. “actual malice”–recklessness or intentionally publishing the falsehoods, not mere negligence). That, aside from evidentiary problems, is one of the reasons defamation (and related) actions are difficult to recover on.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:38pmNo, they didn’t get their information from the cops. They got it from other teachers that just didn’t know the difference between one son and the other.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:38pmGrimmster how do you know CNN heard false info from the cops? CNN needs to learn how to report just the facts. First they would have to learn the meaning of fact again and integrity. How would you like if they implicated you in some awful tragedy with deaths of children and it not be you? Truth matters.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:46pmGrimmster how can you trust anything they report whether it be where they got their info from or what time of day it is? They have a proven track record of misreporting and ignoring stories. How do you not know this? Or unaware of how their lies hurt people?

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:49pmGrimmster; the media carry scanners, and when a theory is passed to dispatch for them to check up on. The media 4G search then report. Even before the information is corrected by dispatch. The Cops/SWAT are just trying to gain situational awareness.
One time the rumor was that I was killed in a traffic accident because my last name sounded close to the victim’s. it’s all damn inconvenient. The bigger the emergency, the bigger the misconceptions.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 6:56pmI wish Ryan would sue CNN and the rest of he networks for slandering him and also libeling him. Anytime a network gets sued and in trouble, it is a good thing.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:12pmI totally agree. I am so sick of the press speculating and in the process ruining someone’s life.another thing that bothers me is their fake concern, for example today on NBC they were so worried about kids seeing the horror on TV.well stop covering it until the police have something. I don’t need a bunch of reporters spewing bull just to hear themselves talk.

If you heard the news, Adam Lanza, the shooter and his brother had Ryans id on him, thus the confusion, and that would have been announced by the cops. Now, go to Ryans facebook page, and see if you hold the same opinion………

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 7:19pmFor this I can hope he does so, there is an all too real probability of someone seeing these posts, even the denials and without the information of the news groups messing it up, going hunting for him.
God keep him safe.

He isn’t “on the lam”.
He was on a bus home to CT.
He’s been in police custody for hours.
