This Video Shows What’s Thought to Be the Largest Iceberg Collapse Ever Caught on Film
A documentary covering how climate change is altering the Arctic landscape has captured what’s being called the “largest iceberg calving ever filmed,” according to The Guardian.
“Chasing Ice“ was put together from material taken while filmmaker and environmental photographer James Balog was on assignment in the Arctic for National Geographic to capture how climate change was impacting ice. This year, the National Snow and Ice Data Center reported Arctic ice shrank to record lows, which was attributed by experts to both global warming and natural causes.
Regardless of your views of global warming — man-made or not — the sights (and sounds) in the footage featured by The Guardian for the documentary, which can be seen in select theaters now, is stunning. The Guardian reported one researcher calling it “Manhattan breaking apart in front of your eyes.”

The team waited weeks to capture footage like this. The final result was 7.4 cubic kilometers of ice breaking from the Ilulissat glaciar in Greenland.
Check it out (Warning: Some strong language):
If you found this footage of the iceberg calving fascinating, be sure to check out this glacial avalanche that caused boat-rocking waves in an article by TheBlaze here.
As for Balog capturing such footage for “Chasing Ice,” the documentary’s synopsis states that he had to battle technology that hadn’t been tested in such subzero conditions and realized his own mortality on while on the mission as well.
“It’s not the nicest environment for technology,” Balog said in the trailer.
The film was directed and produced by Jeff Orlowski and has already been showcased at film festivals and won several awards.
Here’s the trailer for the film, which includes part of the clip showcased by The Guardian:

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 5:47pmFor the uninformed: Icebergs are calved because new ice is formed up above and the pressure of the movement down the slope is pushing the leading edges off into the waters. Periods of melt results in fewer instances of iceberg calving.

Well, no. The glacier did in fact clave. It will be used that as tree hugging global warming propaganda, though, as the only people interested in camping out on glaciers until they get footage of something are those with an agenda to push. It’s the “biggest” cleave yet caught on film because nobody else is dumb enough to tape what happens naturally few months since forever.
Simple facts are these = global temperatures have stayed static for the last 16 years, defying every prediction of the anthropomorphic alarmists.

Directly compare SOHO sunspot data and global temperature, place them on a graph over time, then get back to me about “Science” Global temperature is primarily determined by activity on the sun. Imagine that, the SUN is responsible for global warming. We kinda knew that all along didn’t we?
Don’t believe me? Walk outside, its winter in the US. That temperature difference is caused by a mere 30 degree tilt. In essence, a few thousand miles. Now try to convince me its NOT the sun, go ahead ……try.

Your evidence is subjective. It requires faith just to believe in man made warming. It requires naivete and faith to believe lowering the standard of living through taxation and inferior or rationed energy consumption is the solution. Both are wrong in my opinion. It would really impress me if the dinosaur juice gave off more heat than scarfed off the Sun, or even a meaningful amount. Oh, and don’t forget that big heat-sink in the sky–Outer Space! I wonder how many BTU’s are sucked off Earth every day to heat up the Universe??? Maybe, if we put up a big enough solar panel, we could have all the power we want, and shade the Earth so it doesn’t ‘suffer’ from the Sun’s heat? But wait, where would all the rain go? The Earth is falling, The Earth is falling — actually it falls around the Sun at a rate of 1 revolution per year! Given the distance it covers on its annual circuit, that must be one heck of a speed! Why doesn’t all the atmosphere blow away? How about some REAL SCIENCE from REAL SCIENTISTS (the ones that don’t falsify data to get their way), who don’t sully the profession, to convince all us uneducated carbon-burners that we really do have a problem???

And your biggest gripe is we are overheating the planet… Wish that was all I had to worry about, I am more concerned about being able to survive the last election, about not having employment or a place to live and you expect us to take time to stop and fix a rise in temperature?
The worst that could possibly happen is we cause our own extinction and the planet heals itself over time. And if it doesn’t well, guess that is what is meant to be! Perhaps that was the laws of nature kicking in…

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 11:20amA glacier that makes it as far as an ocean or a lake will not advance or recede – the toe of the glacier will be at the calving point. All of the ice will calve into the water as the ice moves ahead – like an endless conveyor belt. Except for very large glaciers, it is not possible for the glacier to advance into the ocean, as the ice will melt or break off. If a glacier that has been calving begins to recede, then it won’t be calving becuase it is no longer in contact with the water.
Calving glaciers make for impressive video footage, but glaciers will calve no matter what kind of a cooling or warming trend the earth is in. Using a calving glacier as evidence of global warming is junk science.

But, both periods happened, before the industrial revolution ever occurred. So, why is it that we must now blame the same thing on man? Why do we put science (which, by the way, is only correct until the next theory comes along) in front of our own God-given senses?
Do not make scientists, your priests. They are only men, and while their understanding of a subject may exceed your own, a theory is not truth until it is Law. Even then, a Law made by man may be broken. A Law made by God, will not be broken without consequences, which are up to Him.

Third, religious people say “we knew it all along”
First conservatives said climate change was not real, now they said “ok it’s real, but not man made”. It’s amazing how conservatives hijack the progress of this nation by vilifying rational thought. Posted on December 14, 2012 at 11:43amMan, the warming has been ongoing, mostly uninterrupted, for 12,000 years. At that time (12,000 years ago) there were permanent, i.e. year-round, ice sheets as far south as Kansas and Missouri. Ice sheets/glaciers leave tell-tale deposits after they melt and those can be seen today in Kansas and Missouri if one wants to go out in the field to view them. So, something caused the Earth to start warming about 120 centuries ago and it hasn’t stopped. The entire history of the Earth is one of warming/cooling with its attendant rise/fall of sea level. The geologic record reflects this quite nicely.

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 10:59amAl Gore likes his SUV also, and his jets, and his huge mansion, and he likes his million dollars too from the Nobel Peace prize for saving the earth. Let’s be thankful he was never the pres. Obama wouldn’t have as much of America to destroy.
