Father, Aunt of CT School Shooter Speak Out: ‘We Are in a State of Disbelief’

Father, Aunt of CT School Shooter Adam Lanza Speak Out About Sandy Hook Tragedy

(Photo via CBS)

The relatives of Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who reportedly shot his mother to death and then slaughtered 20 children and 6 adults at a nearby school, are speaking out in the wake of the tragedy.

Everyone is trying to make sense of the senseless crime, and his relatives presumably know him best.

Lanza’s father, Peter Lanza, didn’t seem to have many answers, though.

He issued this statement on Saturday:

“Our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones and to all those who were injured. Our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy. No words can truly express how heartbroken we are.

We are in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can. We too are asking why. We have cooperated fully with law enforcement and will continue to do so. Like so many of you, we are saddened, but struggling to make sense of what has transpired.”

The aunt of the gunman was a little more informative, saying her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said she was close with Adam Lanza’s mother, Nancy, and sent her a message on Facebook Friday morning to ask how she was doing.Β  Nancy Lanza never responded.

If her son had needed counseling, “Nancy wasn’t one to deny reality,” she told The Associated Press late Friday.

Speaking outside her house, Marsha Lanza added:

I know [Nancy] had issues with school– she eventually wound up homeschooling him.Β  She battled with the school district, in what capacity I’m not 100% certain.Β  If it was behavior, if it was learning disabilities, I really don’t know.Β  But he was a very, very bright boy; he was smart.

Marsha Lanza said her husband saw Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Other extended relatives released a statement saying they share the grief and “tremendous loss” of the victims.

“The whole family is traumatized by this event,” an officer close to the case remarked.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Let’s reinstate the 10 Commandments on all government buildings AND every classroom in America. Balogna to atheist’s rights. Those poor kids killed now have NO rights. Let’t start teaching kids from birth how important these commandments are, whether or not you believe their origin. Our laws are based on many of them. THEN, let’s arm key school officials with either guns or tranquilizer guns, every teacher a belt with bear mace, and put security cameras outside and inside ALL school entrances. Put up signs telling the crazies that we are ready for you, and you will FAIL. Everyone capable grab a chair, stand behind the door and smash him in the head with it. We MUST take back our country from these terrorists, homegrown or foreign.

People – Guns are not the problem – Political correctness and our video game fantasy movie filled GOD less world we live in. when you take GOD out evil takes its place . Every time a shooting happens the bad guy is strait up NUTZ. and if the people around them had taken just an ounce of responsibility. and said hey hes not right in the head. But no its the guns fault – How many innocents will die if the criminals know that honest people cannot defend themselves.

Progress can be a good thing or it can be the destruction of us. And apparently we have been willing to throw away the importance of sound family structure, solid Christian beliefs and teachings, the ability to care about the condition of our fellow man, and most of all . . . respect and compassion for each other . . . and what has been gained? More violent video games and movies, the fracture of the family unit, and the sense of entitlement. We have forfeited all that is good to become a totally “ME” oriented society. It is sad to watch the total destruction of a country that has been the hope of people from around the world . . . a SAFE place to come to BECAUSE of the freedom to worship, the freedom to achieve, and the freedom to speak – all those qualities that made America the object of hopes and dreams. What a sad end for such a bright beginning . . . the Founding Fathers would be shocked . . . and so am I.

Adam had to have been under psychiatric care, past or present. Where and who is his doctor, what meds was he on? Interview him/her NOT small children for their take on this horror only further traumatizing the little ones. How insensitive and convoluted the media is, to play this out only to serve their agenda, it’s short of criminal.

It is a known fact through research, many anti-depressants cause the front lobe (the portion of the brain which enables human emotions) of the brain to chemically lobotomize progressively with use of these prescription drugs! Drug companies know this, they know long term use causes accelerated irreversible damage. In the 90′s a prestigious med. university found cadavers to have progressive lobotomized front lobes, commonality? Anti-depressants.
Is it any wonder these type senseless massacres have increased, as the use of these medications have accelerated in this country? Long term effects from these drugs were never researched prior to FDA approval. Undesirable side effects were downplayed.

What RX drugs was Adam on, what RX drugs had he taken in the past? This is what should be investigated. We need some critical thinking skills here. What we don’t need is the constant helpless message played by news media which only plays on peoples emotions. Look what happened after 9/11, they knew exactly what they were doing by playing the scenes repeatedly, send the nation into helpless shock then introduce legislation to take away OUR freedom

Laws deter people from bad behavior – they don’t stop them from doing it. Do we want to deter people from committing massacres like this? It’s going to take a web of laws that strike a proper balance between deterring crazy/evil people from doing crazy/evil ****, and preserving the rights of moral people as best we can.

there are no laws that can prevent tragedies from occurring. if a crazy person wants to take drugs, they’ll get them and do them.we have all kinds of laws against drugs, yet drugs are rampant in our society.if a crazy person wants to get a gun and act irresponsible with it,they will,no matter how many laws society tries to implement against guns. responsible, law abiding people have no desire to use a gun or any weapon in a detrimental way,but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to own a gun for our own protection or for feeding ourselves. passing more laws accomplishes nothing of value.

No one seems to mind that thousands of abortions are conducted every day in this country and around the world.

While it certainly is a monumental tragedy that these kids and teachers were killed, and the hearts of the world go out to the families and loved ones of the victims, who speaks for the unborn children who are murdered for the parent’s personal convenience.

The shooter’s family members will be ostracized and demonized from now on. Surprising that not one of his family saw this coming. The picture of the shooter just LOOKS like a psycho.

Don’t ban the guns. It won’t help – the same day, 22 school kids in China were stabbed by an assailant wielding a knife. If someone wants to kill, they’ll find a way to do it.

This kid SHOULD have been aborted!

There are going to be crazy people with God or no God in their lives. The problem is people who chose to ignore a family members mental health issues. Those closest to the member generally are the enablers or the deniers. If father and brother recognized issues, why did not the mother?

How many times have you heard mothers say, “he was such a good boy, he never hurt anyone”. That is the denier.

We don’t know if mom was a denier or not. The bottom line is that we have become a country that has spent years taking responsibility for the raising of our children away from their parents “it take a village”. Laws have been passed that make it difficult for parents to raise their children. Having lived in CT I can tell you that I was asked to leave the examine room on more than one occasion by my child ‘s pediatrician when they were 13 yrs old – due to state law. And national laws like HIPPA, make it impossible for mom, dad or anyone else would not have been able to force this young man into treatment, he’s over 18. At most they could have gotten 48 hour or 72 hour holds. But as an adult he would be able to sign himself out once the hold was over. If he did continue out patient treatment they would not be able to discuss his condition with his psychiatrist or therapist, unless he signed a waiver allowing doctors/therapists to talk to his family. They wouldn’t know if he was following doctors orders. I work for a psychiatric practice doing medical billing, and I can’t even discuss the patients bill with a family member without a signed HIPPA waiver, when that patient is over 18. The most a parent of an adult child can do it write a letter to the psychiatrist or therapist regarding their concerns, which the provider will take under advisement. Doesn’t guarantee that the parents concerns will be addressed.

This is very true. Even as a legal guardian the government feels that you have no rights and are concerned with you taking away the rights of the one you are caring for. It is amazing. I am certain that there are people are there that abuse their rights as guardians but I do not believe it is the norm. I am appalled at the failures in the system.

We search for reasons “why” but I believe any Christian knows “why”. Where God IS, evil cannot be and what we have seen is EVIL. It would be interesting to know if this young man’s parents/family lived a Christ centered life. We’re always trying to put a band aid on the sickness such as pass more gun laws but it’s not a GUN problem but rather a LOG (lack of God) problem.

If you look back at serial killer’s pictures, the majority of them have what I call serial killer eyes. That is the wide glazed over eyes. Rather than look at you, they look through you. I’ve seen Nancy Pelosi have this look. This is not to say she is a serial killer in this sense, but I am sure she has no empathy bone in her body. But I digress.

Obviously, this young man had enough issues where the father and brother left. The mother, possibly in denial about her son, looked after him. Whether she got him the proper care remains to be seen and whether he took the medication as prescribed may be determined from the autopsy.

I took pychology classes in college and people who are schizophrenic have a certain look about them, kind of like people who are mentally retarded or with downs syndrome have..not the same look, but they have a certain look about them and I’ve seen it to be true in most cases. Of course, the people who are closest to these people usually do not see that look, but others may see it and not know what it is about that person that makes him look that way. I have a daughter who is mentally retarded and I can tell you that when she was a toddler, before I knew she was mentally retarded, ever so often I would catch a glimpse of her and she had “that look” like retarded children do, but it was only a split moment and it would be gone. A year later, I was told she was mentally retarded by the doctors. She had been born with a rare disorder that only about 195 people currently have and it causes mental retardation among many other things such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, etc. People would do well to study up on mental illness like this and the signs and looks of people who are mentally ill. Besides his looks, I saw other “behavior signs” described that fit the mental illness that people don’t even recognize. As a society we need to arm ourselves not only with guns, but with knowledge.

There is no way a few good people can prevent this from happening. We must rise up in faith towards God. Cry out for mercy and fast with humility. He may yet show favor that once was ours.

Seems to me it has! Seems to me the rise of all violence as come

From the top of our government.
I feel very deeply for the families and friends of those that died, but

When you have a mass terrorist killing on an American base on American

Sorry but sometimes family are the least capable of evaluating other family members out of emotional blindness or unwillingness to admit what they are seeing. They are so close to the individual they don’t see the changes over time or refuse to be honest about what is going on. I have brother who is a heavy drinker and my parents see him almost everyday. I see him once a month or so and I immediately notice the flush face, blood shot eyes and heavy colongne. Of course excuses galore about allergies and “Rosacea” and what ever else. A quick look around his room reveals large numbers of empty scotch and whiskey bottles.

Sir you have nailed it correctly. As a doting father of two daughters, I absolutely hate to admit the faults of my children. As a devout Christian, I do it anyway. This is not an easy task and I wish it were not my responsibility sometimes, but as a loving Christian father it is my joy to see correction work and would that more people did the same. Painful as it may be to see, identify and correct bad behavior and mental health flaws, it is far more rewarding when you witness the successes of your family when you have already admitted that they are far from perfect and yet met with success.

This is what happens when society wants to make everyone the same or normal and not identify some as being damaged. It’s time to stop that agenda. We are not all the same. This idividual should have been delt with years ago. Institutionalized. Perhaps if delt with earlier in life when signs began to show he could have been fixed. “THEY” can psychoanalyze this kid until the cows come home trying to “justify” and/or explain what he did. “THEY” will eventually have to admit: THIS IS EVIL WALKING. PURE, UNADULTERATED EVIL.
Satan took over his empty, selfish, immature brain and he became a total tool for SATAN.

As we go along, we are either the instrument of GOD or of Satan. FOR Atheists (already tools of Satan) to knock GOD, deny GOD, lash out at GOD just proves that Satan has already “gotten to them” and they are doing Satan’s bidding. NO ONE with more than half a brain can reasonably think that the world just hurled itself together, that all the rhythms, systems, seasons just happened, even over a billion years. They simply cannot deny DESIGN. Sooner or later all people will understand that there is GOOD; there is EVIL. People are either on their way to becoming GOOD or deteriorating into being EVIL. I do not want to hear a lot of ‘excuses’… The “father had seen these boys as recently as this summer” ? Really?…that’s 4 months maybe 6 months.
The lack of respect for ALL human life; the break down of the family; the attempts to remove GOD…ALL of those things caused this…but the root cause is…..EVIL. ONLY a true monster could shoot a 6 or 7 year old helpless child at close range and then keep shooting at him or her. DO NOT attempt to explain his actions. CALL HIM WHAT HE IS : EVIL. A MONSTER for the AGES.

PATTY, atheists are not the problem. Many of them live and let live. Many of them are very kind even without thinking that they will be held accountable in an afterlife.
There are evil people who desire the destruction of our society and try to dismantle it. Some of them are atheists, but some are calling themselves Christians. Christ wants all his children to come to him, not just the ones WE approve of. Let’s not put a wedge between God and His children. All are equal in His eyes. He who is without sin, cast the first stone. Christ is Love. Love is the answer.

You can’t just blame video games.
I’m almost 40yrs old and i’ve been playing 1st person shooter games since i was a kid.
i’ve never even held a real gun in my life, much less contemplated using one.

I also play driving/ racing simulation games, but rarely exceed the speed limit by more than 5mph in real life.

The generation older than myself played Cowboys & Indians relentlessly and brought their holstered cap-guns to school. Back then The Beatles and Elvis were blamed for social decay.

The difference i see is that, back then, a greater emphasis was placed on identifying people who had mental problems & separating them from mainstream society. This was sometimes cruel but very effective. I know we can’t go back to that- nor should we- but, there has to be another solution.

Prescribing meds to unstable persons and then pretending they are stable isn’t working.

      @EAST

      I agree.

Blaming video games is akin to blaming guns.

There are millions of people who play these games responsibly, just as there are millions if responsible gun owners.

We need to stop looking for someone or something to blame. That is too easy.

As a religious person, I tend to see things in terms of ‘ good vs evil’. There is a spirit of darkness brooding over this country, indeed over the entire world.

God is calling us to repentance. We must turn to Him and follow His commandments. The chief of these being ‘love God’ and ‘love your neighbor’.

Those who advocate more control: no video games, stricter monitoring of ‘different’ people, tighter gun control, etc. are barking up the wrong tree.

Laws are made for criminals. A God-fearing, self-regulating society has no need for laws.

There would be no market for violent games, movies, or music. There would be no liquor stores, drug dealers, or bars. There would be no surveillance cameras, security guards, or locked doors.

You cannot legislate, or regulate evil out of society.

I know it’s Utopian, but the harder we try, the more help we get from above.

May God bless us all with an extra measure of mercy thus Christmas season.

If they loved and cared about him so much, then why didn’t they go to marraige counseling, resolve their indifferences, and stay together as a family/husband & wife? Instead, they took the irresponsible easy way out, got a divorce, destroyed the family, destroyed their son, and destroyed other people’s lives as well. And they wonder what went wrong? The children shall suffer the sins of the parent. Like I say, you just can’t fix stupid. And what did God say about harming children? Well, now they have to live with what they have done as parents. The only ones that have reaped what was sown on the ashes of that family are the parents of those poor children, the children that survived and yet lost their own innocence, the surviving children’s families, and the community at large. I shan’t defend divorce or bad parenting but in the end the only ones that have reaped anything in this life are those people, and the only person that will answer to God for this act of evil will be the soulless coward that gunned them down. The parents may have to answer to God for their own failures as parents but the madman that murdered them is the only one that is responsible for the rampage.

Nobody knows what happened in that marriage. No one knows how much love or lack of love existed in that family and none can know the strain that dealing with a child with as refers can be on a marriage. Reports say that the Mom was devoted to her children. If you have ever known a couple who is dealing with an asserted child you may understand more clearly the challenge. Jodi Colquit has written a book based on true accounts of as verger behavior. My heart goes out to all involved. My anger is directed at the part of society that touts violence and supports the removal of teaching morality (right and wrong). from our schools. God bless these families and may god grant eternal rest to those teachers and little saints.

A lot of these reporters are not out to inform the public, they are just out trying to make a name for themselves at the expense of the families privacy. They are no better than the leftists trying to further their gun agenda on the back of these murdered children and adults. They are all deplorable people. Just out of compassion give them at least a week of privacy. They are nothing short of leaches.

This is what happens when God is removed from every aspect of society, when the light is gone all that is left is darkness. If we would but repent of our sins and return to God, he will embrace us as he always has.

I know this might be a novel concept, but can you (us) realize that sometimes Evil just is that…Evil.
