Newtown Connecticut Police Radio Calls Reveal Scale of Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre

Chilling police radio calls reveal it took only minutes for gunman Adam Lanza to massacre 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Audio obtained by the New York Post indicates word of the shooting first went over the town’s police radio at 9:36 a.m. A dispatcher radioed that the gunshots had stopped two minutes later.

“Sandy Hook school. Caller is indicating she thinks there’s someone shooting in the building,” a dispatcher radioed in the first report of the shooting.”

Then less than a minute later: “Units responding to the Sandy Hook School. The front glass has been broken in front of the school, they are unsure why … All units, the individual I have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire.”

“The shooting appears to have stopped,” the dispatcher stated at 9:38 a.m. “There is silence at this time. The school is in lockdown.”

A dispatcher states there are reports of “two shadows running past the gym” — early reports suggested there were two shooters.

An officer at the scene is heard saying, “They’re coming at me through this wood.”

As police searched the school, one officer radioed in at 9:46 a.m.: “I’ve got bodies here. Need ambulances.”

A voice cautions that “the building is not secure, so we can’t send anybody in.”

“We’ve got one suspect down,” an officer says, apparently coming across the body of the gunman.

“Be advised, we could have multiple weapons.”

“We need buses here, ASAP.”

A dispatcher: “What is the number of ambulances you will require?”

Another dispatcher responds, “They don’t know, they are not giving us a number.”
