Man Opens Fire at Alabama St. Vincents Hospital, Wounding 3 Before Being Shot & Killed by Police

Birmingham police arrive at the scene of a shooting at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 in Birmingham, Ala. Authorities in Alabama say a man opened fire the hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before he was fatally shot by police. Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening. (AP)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A man opened fire early Saturday at a hospital in Alabama, wounding a police officer and two employees before being shot and killed by another officer, authorities said.

Police were sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital around 4 a.m. to check on a report of an armed man inside the facility. Two officers who arrived separately converged on the suspect on the hospital’s fifth floor.

“When the officer encountered the suspect, there was immediate gunfire from the suspect,” Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said. One police officer and two hospital employees who happened to be in the area were wounded.

A second officer shot back, mortally wounding the suspect.

Williams said detectives were still trying to determine Saturday why the armed man was in the hospital. Authorities did not immediately release the names of the assailant or the victims.

A handful of cardiac patients and several staff members were on the fifth floor, hospital spokeswoman Liz Moore told reporters during a news conference. She said the hospital is secure and stable, and patient care was not interrupted.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

I have an Idea. Since gun control laws only apply to honest Americans ( not criminals or nut cases ) Lets pass one that disarms the Police, and if that works out well we can discuss the possibilities of a Constitutional Convention to modify or abolish the second amendment.

Why do the police get to use guns to defend themselves and to get rid of these maniacs, but ordinary citizens are prohibited from using a gun to defend themselves to get rid of these same maniacs? Is the life of a police worth more than the life of a teacher and her students, or the life of a nurse? All men are created equal. We all have the right to defend our life. America, our right to keep and bear arms shall never be infringed. Liberals and their stupid polices are stupid. Start calling them out, please.

That is a good point and one I’ve pondered since laws wriiten to give a death sentence to anyone found guilty of killing only a police officer were written.

I have to become a cop in order to have a chance to protect myself against a maniac? You’re a complete idiot if you truly believe that. Did you not read any of the reports? An teacher, school psychiatrist, and the principle, all unarmed, tried to attack and confront the lunatic, with mere hands and feet, and they all failed. Do you really think they had a chance against this maniac? If a maniac breaks into your home, and attack you, would you rather have long nails, a cell phone, banana, or pistol to defend yourself and your family?

The only gun control we need is a Stricter application process. First DO NOT allow someone who has a psychological disorder to get guns and DO NOT allow someone to get them that has a drug or alcohol problem. Also, a psychological test should be done for those that aren’t or haven’t been diagnosed yet. Tell me if this doesn’t make sense? Because banning them isn’t the solution.

@LOGCABINREPUBLICAN It won’t work. Connecticut was a very strict state concerning guns. What if a sane person buys a gun and then one year later goes crazy? The only prevention plan is to be ready and prepared for any such event. Leaving innocent, defenseless kids in school without any security or protection because of Gun-free zones is one reason this slaughter was allowed to happen. Not treating this maniac for mental health issues when he was young because of political correctness is another.

police use their guns to protect others. If they were only concerned about protecting themselves, they would have not chosen to be a cop. They have a sense of duty, of selflessness, or service to others.

All these shooters are long haired socially awkward 20 something deadbeats. These little boys probably dont even know what fox news is, but what they do know from two decades of being told by lib parents and lib schools is if it feels good do it, and they are special no matter what. I am surprised they were able to pull their eyes away from their smart phone or x-box long enough to locate real guns. You want to fix this country start at the bottom by returning letter grades to report cards and letting kids solve their problems on the play ground. I was a terror as a kid but it put me in my place when i had to hand that report card with an F on it to my parents, and it taught me to have more respect for my peers when a kid would give me a black eye (deserved) because I was acting like a d-bag…These things prepared me for the real world…Iphones and PS3 games aren’t doing it for our kids for sure

So the question is was it the fact that the police were wearing uniforms sanctioned by the government that stopped this man before he continued his rampage, or was it the fact that they had GUNS. When citizens don’t have guns, the death toll will be higher, when they have guns, they will be able to stop the attacker.

FISHFART . . . That what you call it, and educated guess? According to Tennessee statute there is no restriction on concealed carry in a hospital. In fact, according to statue 39-17-1306, if a proceeding typically held in a courtroom, where gun carry is illegal, were taking lace in a hospital room, then gun carry would be legal. So even in the presence of a judge during a legal proceeding, if it’s happening in a hospital you can carry. Apparently, you’ve never actually been to a hospital in Tennessee. But you might if another redneck hyped up on Fox News and Bill O’Reilly books decides to shoot up a Knoxville Unitarian church full of ids.

I have heard of this end of the world stuff for 6 years now. I am sick of it. For people who say they are Christian & are awaiting the 2nd coming there is a rebuttal. “”No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, ” Mathew 24:36

For those who believe in the Mayan calendar, why don’t then also believe in the Mayan religion? On top of that they have a Mayan religious guy who said there is nothing to it. They just hadn’t got around to extending the calendar (counting that high).

Certainly people have made money selling content for cable TV.

The bad economy doesn’t help. The lower unemployment rate is bogus. The labor participation rate tells the truth. There are a lot of unhappy people out there, who have no future.

At least after the 21st of a month or two thereafter, we will have to only deal with a bad economy & not this infectious lunatic meme.

Just did some research, the shooter has not been identified by name yet, but he was identified as a man who security had to expel from the building around 8:30 the night before when he became belligerent when complaining about the treatment of his wife. He slipped back into the building at around 4:00 am with the weapon apparently secreted and made his way to the fifth floor. Has the United States just gone mad? What is going on? Have people just given up hope for a better future. We just had a shooting about 5 miles from my house. Some dudes have a shootout with the police. I live in Alabama. I have a conceal carry, but only carry if I’m out late at night. Seems they don’t even seek the cover of darkness to do their deeds.

Up has been down and wrong has been right for a long time now. Not just in the States either, the entire world is going through a mental metamorphosis. I’m beginning to think humans are more “in tune” with the Earth’s polarity than anyone might know. To me, it’s the only thing that makes sense. The faster the poles complete the charge change the more ridiculous we are becoming, like wolves howling instinctively on the full moon.

APPLEHILL, Don’t quite understand your reaction. We can hardly pick up the paper, turn on either the local radio or TV news and the first things are always about crime in Birmingham, usually with plenty of shootings. Its nothing new, just the prime time to put any shootings in the national view today.

One of my sisters was an ICU nurse at this hospital many years ago. I’ve been there a number of times, and know the area somewhat. I’d venture to say that the shooter in this case had something of a grudge against somebody within the building, most likely a girlfriend or spouse. Or, there is the chance of drug involvement. Wonder how quickly 0bama will jump to identify this shooting as “work place violence?”

That’s possible but my speculation puts this closer to the pharmacy.
4a shooting? Minimal staff, people into their mid-shift on a Friday night?
Just speculation that he was cornered and tried to bolt when the alarms went off…

DADROCKED, I was just speculating too. But, it turned out to be a patient’s spouse who flipped out and was removed from the building the night before.

I’ve reread the article and see no mention of this.
Is this something that has been a follow up to this story?
If so then your speculation was on the money. And if so, would you mind speculating to 3 numbers for the pick six lotto for me? I can’t seem to get past 3. 8-)

DADROCKED, I hope that you are reading this. Sorry that I did not get back earlier and answer your question. As I posted above, I did some research online and found that information. I live just 70 miles north of B’ham and had to read the story here on The Blaze. There was some mention of the story on last night’s local news, and it is in the paper this morning. Along with two other shootings in the state. Bet Chicago had many times more than this within a few hours yesterday. You know, that gun free zone.

Name one law that isn’t already on the books that would have prevented the Conn school shooting?
You can ban guns tomorrow and there will still be bad people who use guns to do bad things. Why? Because bad people don’t follow the law. Its just that simple.
How come liberals are the first ones to scream about how drug prohibition causes more violence and more crime but, yet, they support gun prohibition?

Then the nut jobs will just go Tim McVeigh on whoever they have a grudge with and blow up the whole damn school, hospital, or government building. Humans have this uncanny ability to adapt, you see. Even if you somehow got rid of all the guns, and you won’t ever even come remotely close, people would just find new and “better” ways to off one another.

Gun control. Now, is this something you believe in Trollmonger, or are you just regurgitating the thoughts and ideas heard elsewhere? The reason I ask is, if you believe in gun control then you must have given the topic some thought, you have specific suggestions. If you do, throw them out there, lets debate them. But, if its just a talking point that you have espoused because its the popular thing to do within whatever group you affiliate with then you won’t have any realistic, meaningful ideas to offer. Ct has some of the strictist gun control laws in the nation. The perp in this situation was still able to aquire a method to do evil. The only thing “more” laws will do at this point is ensure that “more” laws will be broken. A meaningful debate should look at the reason “why.” Why do some people resort to violence?

      Yep Peck%rhead…

      Hmmmmmmm DOJ statistics:
-Blacks 39 times more like to commit crime against whites
-35,000 black on white rapes reported per year
-9 (nine!) white on black rapes
(This means that every day, over 100 white women are raped or sexually assaulted by black men)
-Over 3000 black on white gang rapes
-White on black gang rapes “so rare” they do not even show up on statistics.

      SO yeah, betcha he’s black.

And thanks to Obama, your race baiter in the White House, I won’t be apologizing if I’m wrong.
