‘Put Herself Between the Children and the Gunman’: Heroic 1st Grade Teacher Died After Hiding Students From Shooter

Heroic 1st Grade Teacher Victoria Soto Died After Hiding Students From Shooter

ABC News

First-grade teacher Victoria Soto died putting herself between her students and the rampaging gunman as he sprayed bullets inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, her cousin told ABC News.

“The family was informed that she was trying to shield, get her children into a closet and protect them from harm, and by doing that put herself between the children and the gunman, and that’s when she was tragically shot and killed,” Jim Wiltsie said.

The Hartford Courant reported that Soto’s classroom was next to where the shooting began at the Newtown, Conn. school. She is believed to have hidden 15 or 16 students, possibly in the closet or in a class bathroom, before the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, entered the room.

Wiltsie said Soto’s “life dream was to be a teacher, and her instincts kicked in” when “there was harm coming towards her students.”

“It brings peace to know that Vicki was doing what she loved, protecting the children and in our eyes, she’s a hero,” Wiltsie said. “She lost her life doing what she loved. I don’t think she would have it any other way. She loved kids, her goal in life was to be a teacher and to mold young minds and that’s what she achieved and unfortunately lost her life protecting those children.”

Don’t worry…The wingers will start saying how they are misinterpreted or are unfairly being accused of hating teachers. They do the same thing with the Bible. The dismiss a lot of the old Testament because it makes them took like bigots. But at other times, they cite the old Testament when it fits their argument.

You people played politics with this woman’s paycheck. Suddenly you want to be clean of your smears against teachers?

Here’s what BLAZE commenters have said about teachers:

DONH2: “How about closing the schools for a year and giving the people an 80% reduction in their property tax bill.”

REAL TRUE AMERICAN: “If they can’t fire them, just don’t pay them they will look for work some where else….”

TUNDRA4X4: “Fire every last one of them!!!!!! No unemployment benifits, etc…… Then you cancel the school year and make everyone of the students take the year over again.”

OOKSPAY: “It is ironic that teachers are beloved and remembered so fondly by so many yet they are the main reason for many states going bankrupt.”

FOX news on teachers: “Regardless of the greed-based, almost slightly sociopathic job bankers did wrecking our economy, those people were there every single day, 12 months a year. Not that nine month bullsh*t!”

Megyn Kelly of Fox News recently argued teachers don’t deserve as much money because they “don’t work as much.”

TreadingOnYou, there is no doubt that Victoria Soto is a hero.

I’m a part-time volunteer science teacher at both public schools and private schools. My mom, multiple aunts, a few uncles, and both grandmothers were all distiguished public school teachers. I have no beef with public school teachers.

However, as a Californian, I DO have a beef with California’s self-serving public school teachers’ UNIONS. My mom hated that she was forced to pay dues to the CTA despite that she disagreed with just about everything they’ve done to the state of California.

The California Teachers Association (CTA) is the biggest spender in California politics, according to the California Fair Political Practices Commission. Both the California Teachers Association and the California Federation of Teachers spent millions to raise taxes on ALL Californians in Governor Jerry Brown’s bogus Proposition 30 tax hikes.

California Proposition 30: Governor Jerry Brown’s Big-Government Tax Hike
      http://soquelbythecreek.blogspot.com/2012/07/california-proposition-30-governor.html

I just wish California’s teachers’ unions would spend a little effort on the REAL problems confronting California instead of their own selfish interests.

      Thank You Proposition 30 Supporters!

Republicans don’t hate teachers. You’re a liar. We want teachers to do their jobs the best they can. But they can’t when they have a federal Government, run by leftie unions, dictating to local school districts what to teach and do. Yes, we can’t stand liberal professors that spout their nonsense to students. That’s not hating teachers, but abhorring the left’s monopolistic influence in education.

First who said Republicans hate teachers? Perhaps you don’t understand. Just because we hate what has happened to our public education system doesn’t mean we hate teachers. All Americans should hate what our public education system has become. Now yes we do dislike the U.N. in fact I hate it. What you fail to realize is that the diplomat you speak of was an Ambassador of the United States of America not the United Nations. Now before you spew hateful names at people accusing them of being born hateful you should have your facts straight. The only hate I see here came from you.

We feel good about calling them heroes when it makes ourselves feel good to say so. But God forbid if somebody actually tries to do something to help them…Like raising pay for teachers or promoting peace to get military home. @treadingonyou: Do you know any teachers? Well I do! My niece is a teacher and says it’s very frustrating to try and do her job when the govt. is constantly interrupting her by pushing all kinds of things at the teachers. She schedules tests on the lessons the kids have been working on only to have to cancel or postpone those tests because of new guidelines, meetings and hogwash. How are the teachers to know if the kids have retained anything they have been studying if they can’t even take a simple test? The govt. has it’s nose stuck in everything they do and causes them to stop in the middle of one thing to jump to another. Then they blame the teachers when the kids don’t learn what they need to know. Then to top it off they expect the teachers to “dumb down” their work to condone their lack of learning. They need to **** out and let the teachers do the job they have been trained to do. The problem isn’t their lack of skill but their lack of freedom. The teachers unions have given them a bad name. They’re out for themselves and all the money they can get from them.

But the people pushing the agenda of more money which always goes for salaries and things that are not in the least related to the students. There are many teachers that are in the profession for the right reasons, but the few soil it for all. Kinda like this murderer that now the radical gun control right activists will pounce upon. All the teachers, first responders and even the neighbors who ran to the scene are heroes. I pray they and the families involved will find peace and healing in the days and years to come.

We should not be surprised, however, that these things are happening and becoming more frequent. Our nation just confirmed, yet again, that it is ok with the majority to kill babies. The evil that is behind attacks like this one laughs at our “laws” — we say “yes, it’s ok to kill children in the womb but not once they are born.” That door was opened 40 years ago…and has been held wide open ever since.

    Sandy Hook: Requiescat in Pace

Nothing–absolutely nothing–can even begin to relieve the pain that the parents, relatives, friends, neighbors, and schoolmates of the twenty innocent children and seven adults must be suffering as a result of Friday’s senseless massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
How else but senseless can we describe the mass murder of 27 innocent, defenseless people on a beautiful, crisp morning just before Christmas in a sleepy little New England town? What other word comes close to defining the insanity that drove 20 year old Adam Lanza to kill his mother, eight little first grade boys and twelve girls, six Sandy Hook women staff members, and finally himself?

If anything, “senseless” is totally inadequate to describe the atrocity.

Those of us parents who have never experienced the loss of a child, especially the loss of a very young child, should never counsel that there will be some sense of eventual closure. Closure is a concept invented by psychiatrists perhaps to relieve the anguish of survivors but impossible in the real world.

There will be time enough to explore the reasons why the obviously deeply-disturbed Lanza saw fit to summarily and violently carry out his premeditated executions.

There will be time enough to determine what demons drove him to . . .

Soto was a teacher in room 10, the classroom next to where the shooting began, the source said. She hid her students — 15 or 16 of them, some possibly in a bathroom — before the gunman entered the room.

He wanted to shoot more people, the source said, but, seeing no one but Soto, he shot her, then left the room, the source sad [sic].”

It’s the liberals and their commie unions that left this teacher defenseless, a sitting duck, for any maniac to walk in and slaughter innocent souls. Let’s not forget that in the name of “safety” liberals and RINOs passed a zero tolerance gun policy on all school grounds. For Pete’s sake, not even the principle or a certified and trained teacher is allowed to posses a gun for protection. We entrust the education of our children in the hands of these teachers, but we leave our kids with no adequate protection. I expect some sort of security wherever I go, we should expect no less from our schools. The police will use guns, not forks, to protect themselves from these lunatics. Are we as ordinary citizens worth less than them? All men are created equal and we all have the same right to defend our life.

Hating corrupt union heads who use their members as cash cows to funnel funds to corrupt politicians means we hate teachers?

You’re a victim of propaganda, and I feel sorry for you.

We love children, so oppose abortion, and you say we hate women… despite the fact that ~50% of those children would grow up to be women.

We love freedom, so oppose high taxes, and you say we hate the needy… despite the fact that the government is promoting dependency, and killing the economy that pays for it.

We love all races, so oppose segregation, and you say we hate minorities… despite the fact that it’s the left that forms coalitions that separate people by race.

This list could go on for pages. You’re being used, and fed a line of BS. There are ulterior motives at work for just about every one of your non-arguments, and it’s all about dividing and conquering America. This is social warfare, textbook style.

      Get a grip, friend.

Bava is doing the same thing he accuse others of. He is stereotyping everyone on the blaze as people who stereotype teachers as lazy unionists.

I too am frustrated by the prevailing attitude I have seen from many posters on this site towards a group of people who dedicate their lives to our youth.

Teachers are vilified constantly by members of this site and that is wrong. But it is also wrong to vilify all the members (or all conservatives) on this site of hating teachers.

You people? I am sickened over this and I don’t hate teachers. I’m a conservatve, and dislike teacher unions, but the teachers themselves? They are as indvidual as every group in America! Good and Bad. This entire thing has sickened me. Bless this woman who put her life in front of the children. I would hope we would all do the same.

uh huh….so now its not the liberal/leftist teachers “indoctrinating” the poor children with socialism, and communism and atheism and all the other isms that you nuts think teachers instill, but are dreadfully misinformed about but the union leaders? I have seen numerous comments about evil teachers here, so don’t try and switch it around to the “union heads” when it becomes expedient…(ie…..when, as in this case you’ll look bad if you do hate on the teachers)

      @N37BUG et al: Bravo!

“WE PEOPLE” do NOT hate Teachers, we hate what many teachers teach (Anti-Americanism, Anti-Moral, Anti-God as programmed into them in their various colleges who have now admitted to teaching the Communist party-line via PLANTED (by COMMIES) teachers since early 1950′s. THEY admitted it last year, but we’ve known it for decades.

Read it again and tell me which part of that you don’t understand.

Hey used2wipe: maybe u should wipe some of the bs in your brain. It’s ok start wiping again. I know first hand that the teachers do not make the syllabus; it is pre generated and they are given the program they must teach. Make every state a right to work state and get rid of public sector unions.

Decades ago, Israel adopted a policy that swiftly ended terrorist attacks against schools. Earlier this year, Thailand adopted a similar approach. It is politically incorrect, but it does have the advantage of saving the lives of children and teachers. The policy? Encourage teachers to carry firearms.”

I have personally known hundreds of teachers in my life. Trust me…..arming them is not a good idea. They do not have the training, temperament or skills to carry a gun (especially in Elementary school).

We are not asking to simply hand them a gun. I don’t hand a chainsaw, axe, or hot iron just to anyone, especially without any instruction. We’re talking about at least having security, an armed principle or teacher, with training, certification and proper education to defend themselves and protect others. Every freaking Government building has armed guards, security measures, and police ready at a notice, except our public schools, which are also government buildings. The politicians only care about protecting themselves, not our children, apparently. The executive of my county is very liberal and anti-gun, yet he has three armed body guards with him at all times, and uses more than $300,000 a year of our tax money to protect himself. Our schools? Unprotected. A father and his children? No gun permits are granted in this state to ordinary citizens. We’re not asking for much. We just to having a chance to protect ourselves and children. Why are the lives of judges and Government administrators worth more than innocent, defenseless children?

puravida56: training and qualification IS the answer, handing a gun to someone unwilling to use it properly is worse that the status-quo. A few well trained and motivated people could protect a large number.

Another hero whose story should be remembered… a selfless act she performed without thinking…
It’s terrible when we lose such people to caprice and selfish evil.
I will think often as the story gets put together, why couldn’t this deviant little runt have simply offed himself, instead of ending little ones childhoods, including lives he did not steal, and taking from the community dedicated and devoted professionals who had clearly never done anything to him.

Treadingonyou: “She was a Democrat. A liberal. A union member. You are supposed to hate her, Tea Bags.”

The only hate on the thread seems to be coming from you. Why do you feel compelled to make things up? You may have been correct with just one thing in your description.

I just talked with someone from the town. There are quite a few things mis-reported or inaccurate in the media coverage, but possibly attributable to eagerness of reporters to report something and fill in the blanks. You, on the other hand, make things up from the whole cloth.

My source also knew Victoria Soto. She was a practicing roman-catholic. She was independent and not registered with any political party. She was also very family oriented and pro-life, which if I am not mistaken is not exactly a liberal stance. She may have been a teacher’s union member, my source did not know–but if she was, she may not have had any choice about it if she wanted to teach in the area.

Fittingly, in the candle-light vigil for her, a local student choir did not sing the Funeral March of Fallen Revolutionaries, but Silent Holy Night and Amazing Grace.

      God bless Victoria Soto.
