Report: Conn. Gunman Had an ‘Altercation’ With School Staff the Day Before Massacre

Editor’s note: See update below.
The gunman who massacred 26 children and adults then killed himself at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school reportedly had an “altercation” with four school staff members the day before, according to NBC News. It was not clear what the argument was about.
NBC reported that three of the four Sandy Hook Elementary staff member died Friday when 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire. The fourth was not at school that day and was being interviewed by investigators.
Two days earlier, Lanza reportedly tried to purchase a rifle from a sporting goods store in nearby Danbury, Conn., but was blocked by the state’s gun sale waiting period.
Authorities have said Lanza first shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, at home, then used her car to drive to the school with at least three of her guns and forced his way in.
It’s unclear precisely what Nancy Lanza’s link to Sandy Hook Elementary was, according to the Associated Press. Early reports said she was a teacher, then at least one parent said she was a substitute, but her name does not appear on staff lists and investigators have not stated a connection. According to NBC, Adam Lanza was once a student at the school and shot 20 children at close range when he made it inside.
All the victims’ bodies were removed from the school and taken to the medical examiner’s office, police said Saturday. All the victims have been identified and authorities were preparing to release a written list of names and birth dates.
Update, Sunday: Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said Saturday there was no report of any confrontation between Lanza and school staff in the days before the shooting. NBC News has maintained its report.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 4:03pmWe are only addressing the symptoms. Restore the family unit and promote it. Our public institutions are destroying the family while glorifying single motherhood with no father to be found. Government values are replacing family values and we wonder why these tragedies are happening. Fix the root cause, not the symptom. If you have no higher power, you are accountable to no one. Sorry to say but it will only get worse. My advice is to hide most of your guns in a secure cache. The next step will be confiscation if the ball gets rolling on this, although I don’t think it will. Only national crisis will result in disarmament of the people.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 4:46pmAmen. We need the family structure back in the home. We need to bring liberty and Independence back. Emphasis on Independence.
We give most of our money to the Government because they will handle the economy better, and we’re in unprecedented debt. We give up God’s natural use of value and money, gold and silver, to the Government, and in return we get massive inflation and an unstable currency. We give up our private businesses to allow the Government to regulate the free market and ensure fair competition, and businesses are going over seas, and people can’t get hired. We quit governing our own local schools because the Government knows better than us, and we get 40% of high school graduates that can’t even read 8th grade level reading, or write an essay. We give up our guns because only Government can be entrusted with the security of our lives, and we get maniacs going wild on defenseless souls. We give up God in the name of tolerance, and with it reject any sense of absolute values, morals or virtue, and we get Jersey Shore and Buck Wild. We give up on reading and learning real music, and turn to Hollywood movies and violent video games for entertainment. We deny our kids the useful experience of failure and defeat, and are angered when they grow up and can’t even run a news stand. 60+ years of Marxist and progressive policies have really done us good, right?

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 4:55pmLooks to me like CT guns laws eliminated the chance
for the Principal to keep a handgun locked in his desk
drawer, as a ‘just in case’ response to exactly this kind
of scenario. If he had one, he might have stopped this
a lot earlier. Isn’t this exactly why we have air marshalls
on random flights? For those who say the principal can’t

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 5:37pmI agree that a strong family unit would help. Unfortunately, in todays economy it is almost impossible for a mother to stay at home and raise the kids. If you do not go to college you can not get good jobs. The factories have left. Stress from lack of money cause strife and is a major factor in divorce.
I believe America is being torn apart on a number of fronts.

Not that his has anything to do with the story but you are mistaken about people without college degrees not making money. I didn’t finish my degree and I make more than 90% of my friends with bachelors degrees. It is true that a lot of jobs have gone oversees but mostly what we have in America right now is factories moving out of the North. Their are plenty of jobs in the South, if people are willing to move and show up for work everyday then you will have work.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 6:17pmAnd when the classroom doors are all locked thusly and there’s an emergency which requires the children to exit quickly, what then? What we need is for people to be taught self control, from the beginning, and perhaps some armed personnel within those classrooms. If that principal had had a gun when she first heard or saw something, and the proper training on using it, it might have not been her who died when she confronted him, and many other lives would have been saved. Do a web search on “saved by a gun” and sit back and be shocked what they’re not telling anyone. Thanks to the NRA and all the so “patriots” out there anybody get legally get a gun, no matter if they are mentally ill, felons, Islamic terrorists or whatever. Or they can simply steal one as was the case here.
Ann Coulter – the Queen of Outrage – reflected the opinion of many here saying that the answer is give even more people guns. She did not say we should reinstate the ban on assault weapons or limit the legal size of magazines. Friend, a nut can kill a lot of people in a school or other public place very quickly with a big, macho clip on your macho semi-automatic pistol.
Republicans think that the answer to gun violence is even more guns in more places. Psychologists call that “magical thinking.” It’s like believing that lowering taxes increases government revenue. Or like saying that redistributing wealth to the richest by lowering their taxes helps the middle class and poor people (the rest of us). It’s the logic of 1984: Ignorance is Strength.

The US is the most armed country in the world, and the freest in the world, and most prosperous, and most rich. Thanks to the all patriots and veterans that used guns to defend our liberties. It’s illegal to sell guns to the mentally ill, felons, Islamic terrorists or whatever. Stores do a background check first.
When Clinton was President, a ban on “assault” weapons was passed, and crime did not go down or up. A nut is a nut, evil is evil, deranged is deranged, just like liberals.
There is no such thing as “gun” violence. Guns don’t commit crimes against anyone, people do. That’s like discussing drunk drivers, and calling it car violence. Violence is violence, no matter with what it’s done or how it’s done. Progressives believe the answer to reduce “gun” violence is prohibiting guns, and show no facts. Mexico has banned their citizens from all guns. Mexico’s murder rate is almost thrice that of the US, though they have a smaller population. There are no gun stores in Mexico, only the Government and drug cartels have guns. Liberals believe we can live in a perfect world wherein if we get rid of all ice cream there won’t be anymore fat people. Raising taxes on businesses does not necessarily give the Government more revenue. Allowing private business to expand and prosper creates more jobs, and thus, more citizens pay taxes.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 6:15am“Don’t let the “experts” cover up another pharmaceutical tragedy. The Connecticut shooter Adam Lanza was autistic. Autism (thought to be caused by over-vaccination of children, especially with vaccines that include the mercury-based preservative Thimerosal) is treated with a class of drugs called SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). SSRIs have a long history of triggering suicide and violent behavior in patients that take them. The US corporate media does not report these stories for fear of losing lucrative Pharmaceutical advertising deals. The US Government looks the other way (the FDA is “considering” a warning label on SSRIs) while our children commit suicides and carry out acts of extreme violence. Don;t take my word for it, web-search “SSRI suicide” and “SSRI homicide” and “SSRI violence” and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall piss you off!”

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 7:05amIt is simple. Once you teach a generation that man kind has no value, no worth, that there are no consequences, that man is a plague, a cancer, a parasite on “mother earth” and they come to believe it. Only then is a holocaust possible. For if men can not recognize their own value, they most certainly can not recognize that of their brother.
I was taught that I was created in the image of God, that God made provision to redeem me, and that if I rejected God hell was my reward. Someone that believes that he is made in the image of God and that hell exists, does not kill children, then them self.
It all started with school prayer didn’t it.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 7:56amSome statistcs ENCINOM does not want you to know.
America has the highest gun ownership in the world. We have 88 guns per 100 people
There are 25 countries in the world with higher gun murder per capita rates than us
Honduras has 6.6 guns per 100 people, but has the highest gun murder per capita rate in the world
Having less guns does not mean a lower murder rate.
In American, black Americans make up 12.5% of the population, but they commit half the nation murders. If we could lower the black murder rate to the same as whites, we would lower the nations murder rate by just about 40%, and all the while be saving a whole lot of black lives. Encinom hates those statistics, because it does not jive with his lib talking points. He is fine with black on black violence, just as Jessie, Al, and the democrat party is fine with it. They keep getting the black vote, and they get to preach about the need to disarm the law abiding.
Encinom.. Take a look at all the law enorcement photos from the recent shootng, Notice that all the cops are carrying AR rifles. This is also what are military carries. This is why I also own them in civilian version. Just because it is black in color does not make it bad. It is a semi auto rifle, like any other. If only the government has them, then the people then become slaves to that government. People in North Korea, China, Cuba, and the old Soviet Union were not armed. There is a reason the gov disarmed them.

As a matter of fact the gun control law in place here probabley added a death to the count. He couldn’t buy his own gun because this state has a waiting period on rifles. That didnt stop him, he just went to his moms house and murdered her so he could use hers. On a side note let me put on my tinfoil hat for a second…we as a society need to demand M.E. tox. reports on all these shooters (authorities know what chemicles were in these peoples blood)…There are other parts of the world where young men are fed narcotics and indocterinated into believing that if they die for the cause it will be for the better of man kind. I for one dont buy that these people are going on shooting rampages because we live in a society where guns are available. In my high school every truck in student parking had a high power rifle hanging in the window during hunting season and we had 2000 +students. No one ever died back then…more guns, less death= gun control argument is garbage. Besides how many shooters would attack a student body with that much firepower

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 8:32amIn various debates on here, i like to point out that in the 1950s, we had prayer, Bible, and instructed creation in our public schools, and we were top in the world in math and science. Libs generally hate facts such as that.
In that same decade, you could go to the local hardware store, and for next to nothing could purchase a M1carbine. You could also get twenty and thirty round magazines for it. It could just have easily been used for a mass murder. Why were there no such shootings at our schools back then?
If you study school shootings, and murder of school age children, you will see that it started to happen around the same time (1963) that we started teaching evolution. When we ditched the Ten Commandments, we also ditched the one that said “though shalt not kill”
I would also say that we lost discipline. Dr Spoc tought America that spankings were bad, and that we are supposed to let little Johnny express himself. Look at the pics of this recent shooter. What the heck is up with that haircut? It looks like the freaking liberty bell on his head. You will also notice that folks claim he was “Goth”. In the 1950s young men were expected do dress and act like men. Now we have kids walking around looking like freaks and weirdoes, and wonder why they act like freaks. Had I gone home, with a freaky haircut, and declared myself Goth, my dad’s hand would have gone upside my head so hard, that Goth was no longer an option, and he would have taken a razor to my he

Some more facts for you.
In the last decade, mass murders have gone done, not up. You will also notice that in the last decade, more and more states are allowing concealed carry.
The places in America with the highest gun violence are still the cities with the most gun control.
We sensationalize these events, but there are less of them, School age kids are more likely to die getting struck by lightening, than shot in school.

How about locking up people that have mental health problems instead, like this guy should have been or being under close supervision. Maybe when he tired to buy a guy and was turned down that there should have been an automatic phone call to his local police dept and a officer sent out to investigate.

THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO…unless the patient agrees to treatment, it is VERY hard to have someone involuntarily committed.
And even when they DO involuntarily commit, they kick them back out as soon as possible!
I am willing to bet the family had been trying to get him help…THERE IS NO HELP OUT THERE!!!
We have been riding this roller coaster with a family member for a long time now…
You can scream until you are blue in the face for someone to do SOMETHING.
Mental health services are scarce, and the mentally ill have the right to refuse help (and they usually do!)
I have to wonder if the weapons were to actually purchased protect the parents from this son.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 4:31pmYou are absolutely correct. The left wing insisted on the rights of the mentally ill to be able to choose or refuse treatment. Well, this might work for a person who has NO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES and can reasonably make good decisions. BUT, the mentally ill person cannot always make good decisions especially when they have gone off their medication which frequently happens and then bad things start to occur. Our state, PA, closed all of the mental health facilities and put these people on the street or in group homes. BUT the list of mentally ill people continues to grow quickly and there is no help out there for the families to cope. So Mr, Bloomberg of NYC, before you want to take our guns away, I suggest that you address the mental health issue first. The media are hiding something,so the anti second amendment sentiment doesnt die out this time, before guns are banned.

Much of which is false or inaccurate. Sure this is a tragic story and should be reported but not without crediable evidence. This story will take weeks to unravel or maybe never. Yet there will be rumors and nonsubstantiated imformantion passed on as truth for who knows for how long. Right now what we need to do as a Nation of people is to step back and realize that there is nothing we can do for the victims. Justice has already taken it’s course with the death of the gunman. The souls of the victims are now in the hands of the Lord. Now is the time for us to heal not to fight and bicker over gun rights. Althought there will be brewing argument’s this is not the time and place for them.

If we waited a week before saying anything, they bring up trending polls, will we say well you have been politicking the last week on what should be done? They would just ignore you & move right on I think.

We’ve set our kids up for failure when we don’t teach them to handle adversity because everyone is a winner and should have a trophy just for trying. Another lib message. Libs teach us if it feels good just do it. Drugs are good. Christians are bad. Posted on December 15, 2012 at 2:15pmIF, and I stress IF, this was a case of the shooter having a mental illness, there will be much more than gun management to discuss. As so many have rightly stated: the guns are not the problem, the shooters are the problem. Our mental “health” system is so messed up; that is the real issue that needs addressed. Many familys have members with mental illness who cannot get services. It isn’t just a matter of money to pay for the services either, the services don’t exist. Where do you put a strong 20 year old young man who has “explosive disorder” (blows up without the slightest provocation) who is also on the autism spectrum? Most states do not have facilities for them. They can’t be put into group homes due to their potential danger to other residents. At home, the family members fear for their lives if they set limits, put locks on doors. I have a nephew like this; his family has money and built a padded room for him when he was younger. They can’t do that with him now that he is 20. These folks with this diagnosis also do not know social skills, not for lack of teaching, they just don’t “get it”, so there is always the risk of them getting set off by a perceived slight, resulting in something like we see in this case. It is a sad, sad situation. Revise our mental health system and you will see an automatic reduction in these mass killings because then family and friends reporting strange behaviors will have options for treatment prior to a massacre happening.

IMO we should go back to that standard. If a doctor says you need a mind altering medication like Xanax you should be first admitted to and confined in a hospital until you are clearly weened off of them and able to function with out the drug.

Rose-ellen,
I have never agreed with you until now. MAO drugs are being given to people of all ages when they should not be given to one quarter of them. With children, I believe, parents have a kid who is a bit hyper-active and the parent cannot or will not try to control the kid. So parent takes the kid to the doctor and the doctor prescribes an MAO drug. Kid is now so drugged up, he/she cannot “act-out”. Another thing. It used to be that Asthma was a huge worry. Drugs were prescribed and thousands of kids were doped. Now the worry is Autism. Too many kids are being diagnosed with Austism that are really not suffering with this. Yet the doctors and the parents dose these kids with MAO drugs so the parent will not have to deal with the kid and the doctors and/or drug companies can make lots of money. One way to stop the madness is to stop the drugging of our children. But, everyone has to be a victim. So the drugging will continue.

But I find interersting the photo the msm chooses to put in front of you- a harmless looking young kid, a pic that is 5 years old, contrasted to the evil guns….this is by design to paint an image, yet, the pics that are available of what this kid looked like NOW are conspicuously missing- here he looks like a true misfit, but that would not be a good image- get it? kid good- guns bad. Instead the narrative should read: gun good- kid bad.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 2:04pmThis is a terrible tradegy, but is not the fault of the gun but the individual who commited this act of horror. What needs to change in this country is the ability to commit a loved one when it is observed they are bordering on unreality. At the present time the committment policy is if the person is imminent danger to himself or voluntery commitment. Someone that is delusional or bordering on crisis does not recognize that they are in trouble. This needs to change, not gun laws unless it is to be like Switzerland where every citizen is required to own a gun and learn to use the gun properly.

Posted on December 15, 2012 at 2:00pmThis is a terrible tragedy but it is not the fault of the gun, it is the fault of the individual. What needs to change is the facilities and the ability to put someone away for observation before they commit a henious act. Right now if you observe a family member in crisis unless them are a danger to themself or self commit you can not get help. Trust me that needs to change a person in an altered state does not realize them are in crisis.
