White House Online Gun Control Petition Quickly Surpasses Required Signature Count After Connecticut Elementary School Shooting

An online petition calling on the White House to immediately address the issue of gun control quickly surpassed the required number of signatures Friday, hours after the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

“The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns,” the petition states in part. “While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths.”

Petitions on the White House’s “We the People” online petition site require 25,000 signatures within a month to garner an official administration response. The petition met that goal Friday evening; by Saturday morning it had reached more than 68,000 signatures.

“Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution’s intended purpose of the right to bear arms,” the petition states. “Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Friday demurred on the issue of gun control, saying it was a day to mourn, not to pursue policy.

“There is — I am sure will be, rather — a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates, but I do not think today is that day,” Carney said.

Speaking about the shooting later on Friday, President Barack Obama vowed to take “meaningful action” to prevent more such tragedies from taking place in the future.

  THE Firearm was just the instrument. what where the contributing factors that led to this senseless act of violence? Illegal Drugs? Hollywood? Video Games?
  
  We know violent movies that come out of Hollywood are desensitizing Americans. We know crimes have been committed based off of Hollywood movies. We know that even shooters have dressed up like characters in certain hollywood movies before committing senseless acts of violence. Yet I see no petition to shut down hollywood.
  
  We know video games are violent and they desensitize Americans. Yet, I see no petition to shut down the video game industry.
  
  We all know alcohol is a contributing factor to a lot of violent acts and the cause of many deaths, both young and old from drunk drivers. Yet, I see no petition to ban alcohol, nor a petition to ban vehicles which are just a instrument of destruction.
  
  Look to the contributing factors that led to this senseless act of violence and start banning these contributing factors before you ban the instrument.

  Wouldn’t it make more sense to ban psychotropic drugs? We’re now reaping the effects of a generation (are you noticing these shooters are millenials?) of kids who have been drugged since they were in pre-school. ADD medication, depression medication, everyone is autistic now so give them drugs. It is no coincidence that the decay in civility can be tracked to millions popping “meds” and retreating to a keyboard or a 5 inch mobile screen.

  This shooting is yet another tragic example of the failed, grotesque insistence on helpless victim zones where any crazed gunman can be assured of a large number of disarmed, undefended, helpless victims, all crammed into one place, where he can kill many children before an armed defender arrives from elsewhere. It is disturbing and sick that the federal government so hates the right of the American people to bear arms, and so hates their natural right to self defense, that the government insists on making them helpless, disarmed victims for anyone who cares to kill them. And in this case, all of the teachers and staff were willfully disarmed by the Federal Government, by force of law and threat of prison, to ensure that they would be disarmed and incapable of saving the lives of the children entrusted to their care.
  That makes the Federal Government complicit in the deaths of these children, and in fact an accessory to their mass murder, by forcibly disarming (with the very real threat of prison) all the teachers, all the staff, and any parent who may have been on school property. That stupid law guaranteed the shooters would meet no immediate armed resistance, which is exactly what is needed to stop such an attack.

  I was bullied in school. When it reached the point of being physically attacked in the schoolyard after school I faught back. I was susspended for it, school administrators told me it was my choice to swing back, I didn’t have to do that.
  My parents; however, supported my decision to fight back! I was not bulied after that day.

  A guy gets into a car after drinking all night at a bar. He’s well over the legal blood alcohol level. On his way home he loses consciousness, runs a red light and broadsides a van of a family coming home from a night out at dinner. He kills everyone on board but escapes with minor injuries.
  
  Do we outlaw cars because this man murdered an entire family with his vehicle? According to the National Safety Council it is more likely that you will be killed by an automobile than a gun. In 2010, 211 children were killed in drunk driving crashes. That is a quarter of the number of kids at that school today. Yet we don’t outlaw automobiles, NOR ALCOHOL!

  We need a petion for cars & trucks! They need to be outlawed also. Hundreds of thousands are killed each year due to them. We could solve most of the countrys problems by not polluting the air and if we all are on bicycles an accident would not be life threating. If we outlaw guns the death rate and home invasions will go off the charts. The only folks with guns will be the armed services, police thugs & gangs. If a guy blike this killer wants to kill and can’t get a gun he will steal a truck and drive around a school untill a lot of kids are in the crosswalk. If he can’t get a truck thers always a car.

  This reminds me of feudal Japan, where the peasants were not even allowed to carry a 2 inch blade. Soon training in martial arts was banned as well, as they became well trained enough to punch through armor. Thai Chi originated as “a dance” and not a martial art.   We have spent billions of dollars educating teachers and school administrators and $0 teaching them to defend and protect our children. Hiding kids in a closet or bathroom is not defending them, and running away from a gunman just gets you shot in the back. We probably ought to be looking at what Israel had done to protect their children in schools.   You are correct as they are not able to use anything but rash thinking. When I lived in DC one of the local thieves offered to sell me a gun. He said that if you want a pistol that almost every car had one under the front seat. If I wanted a rife or shotgun about 1-in-3 had one in the trunk of their car. Why is it, I wonder, that the White House and the media are drooling over themselves with excitement about petitions to ban firearms, when doing so would be equally unconstitutional?   People who support the NRA have a permanent & ongoing petition of 4.3 million to keep the 2nd amendment. Plus you have state & local groups who membership does not overlap.
  
  Add to it the millions of law abiding citizens who own guns. That far outweighs these petitioners you speak of and who by the way would support any leftist cause coming down the pike. They would vote for Uncle Joe Stalin for U.S. president if it were possible.

  I just watched my kids finish the game Gunslinger and right away the theater shooting popped into my head. At the end of the fun and shooting other puppets. The gunslinger pops out of the movie screen and at that point your are to kill as many real people as you can in the theater. Slowly going down the isles while people scram to run threw the chairs. These are not cartoon people, but real video of real people. I must say it was very disturbing to say the least. But what am I thinking? “it’s all the guns”

  What’s the big deal here about “surpassing required number of signatures?” I mean, the required number of cowards, kooks and misfits in this country could fill out any petition request the community organizer wanted, so long as it didn’t involve greater numbers than their representation of the population.
  
  They could get the same number of people to sign a petition legalizing incest and child molestation, which has a high priority among the lunatics and depraved.
  
  What we need is a law and intense physical action to eliminate those who sign these kinds of hate requests. That’s the only real solution to society’s problems.

Everyday in America thousands of babies are savagely murdered in the womb under the banner of “CHOICE” and everyone goes about their business as if nothing is happening. When it comes to the premeditated murder of babies in the womb the Left shouts “CHOICE” but when it comes to law abiding American citizens right to bear arms and protect and defend themselves “CHOICE” goes right out the window. This isn’t about “CHOICE” and it isn’t about protecting children, if it was ABORTION would be outlawed, it’s about forcing an ideology on people and taking away their “CHOICE” to protect and defend themselves (just as they have taken away an unborn babies “CHOICE” to be protected and defended) When a terrorist is captured and has water poured on his face they call it “TORTURE” but when an unborn baby is sliced and ripped to pieces so that it can be sucked through a vacuum tube into a trash bin they call it “CHOICE”.   Well, Rothbardian, on this we agree. I read a statistic that stated that roughly 70% of the population was on some type of mood-altering prescription drugs. When my dad passed, my mother’s doctor (general practitioner) asked if she wanted an anti-depressant. I was appalled. She was grieving…not depressed. Grief is a natural process. She declined. Creating more laws while not enforcing the ones we have will only help criminals by disarming law abiding ciizens and making them vulnerable.   Agree with @THOMAS and @RRICE66. Guns aren’t the problem. When you disarm the citizenry, the only people with guns are the criminals and government. Cases in point: Chicago bans gun and have the highest gun murder rate in the country, twice that of NY. Mexico bans guns, they even bad ownership of a bullet. The problem is our society. The society that begat “zero tolerance,” where from the earliest of ages, children were not allowed to defend themselves. If you allow children to socialize themselves in the schoolyard, where the bully gets punched back in the nose, he learns not to hit because of it. I can sympathize with RRICE66. We pulled our boys out of public school in 1984 after a bully sent our oldest to the emergency room. The school didn’t punish the aggressor because we wouldn’t allow our son to be punished.

  What kind of a parent leaves their disturbed 20 year old son who has Asperger’s, autism and possible multiple personalities access to their guns. There is a problem in this country. And the problem is the growing number of mentally ill people in society.

  By “control” they mean confiscation. This family legally owned their guns, so the only way to have prevented it would have been if they didn’t have any guns at all. Although it might sound good on paper, there are tens of millions of guns in the US and it would take decades to get them all. All the while criminals would keep theirs to prey on the defenseless. Sure you could take a gun here and there after the fact when catching a criminal who was using it on a victim, but that doesn’t help the victim at the time. I think a better idea is to leave it up to the states. Don’t have these “one size fits all” federal laws. A rancher in Wyoming shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun because a gang banger in Chicago or LA shot someone? Leave it up to the states. Let people vote with their feet. Let New York ban guns all together and people will move away to a state that allows guns-if they so choose. Federal laws are too restrictive on everyone for the actions of a few.

  I saw an old poster once that showed a bunch of people lined up next to a long trench on their knees with their hands tied behind their backs. The trench was full of bodies and there were men with rifles pointed at the heads behind every one of the people about to be executed. There were two captions.   Every gun control law they have passed is illegal in the first place, the constitution directly prohibits congress from passing laws to restrict weapon ownership. The fact that Americas murder rate has risen since the gun control act of 1968 proves gun control is nothing more than an attempt to control law abiding citizens.   Excellent point GREGB. He tried to purchase a rifle but he couldn’t get one so he stole his mothers guns so we probably need gun control laws that prevent people who know people who just might tryto steal their guns from getting guns. We need a new federal agency to begin checking everyone who knows someone who might steal their gun and go on a rampage. See, Liberal Nirvana is acheivable we just have to create a federal agency and properly fund and resource it. I recommend Eric Holder and the DOJ, they seem to have a good handle on “gun control” ;)

Like most people this atrocity has saddened me beyond belief but along with that sadness I also feel great fear of more government over reach into our lives using this event as the excuse. The progressives/communists have long wanted to disarm Americans and the murder of all these children is the catalyst they needed.
How will Obama do it? How will he please himself, his followers and his masters by taking away gun rights? 2013 is going to be an interesting year.

  Here is one for all you who think that the government does not use mind altering drugs to induce violence.
  
  The US military discovered a drug used to prevent malaria, called Lariam, that can cause normal soldiers to commit psychotic violence against innocent civilians.
  
  Now google the drug lariam and see what you find. There have been more mass shootings in the past few years than I care to think about, and they all seem to have MENTAL ISSUES. Hmm, is there a correlation? And for all those that don’t think the government would do experiments like this, the government put LSD on the streets, they gave VD to the Philippines, and they have done many more things that have not hit the light of day yet.

I wonder how far beyond the “intent of the Constitution” free speech has gone? How much farther than the Constitution intended is the current policy of due process or property rights? Maybe we should address voting as it was originally intended in the Constitution (white, male property owners)? NOTE: If you can’t easily detect sarcasm….. this post is dripping with it.

  I don’t know what they think is the intent of the constitution. The intent was that every American would ready and able to perform militia duties, so the type of firearms they are supposed to have are military grade. Constitutionally, we should all have full-auto capable rifles available for our use. I just hope most of the People that talk tough are ready to act tough when these new restriction come down the pipeline. I remember the assault weapons ban, and how nobody did anything about it. Hindering LAW ABIDING citizens from owning guns or making it even more difficult to get guns for LAW ABIDING citizens will NOT STOP OR EVEN REDUCE GUN RELATED CRIMES. History in other countries has proven this. This evil person killed his own mother and STOLE her guns that she obtained LEGALY. This further proves the point that a criminal will DO ANYTHING to get to what they want PERIOD. GUNS DO NOT KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. Ladies and gentlemen, if there is any doubt that the shooting in Connecticut was orchestrated, you might want to re-evaluate your thinking. Quickly return to the assassinations in the early 60′s of political leaders: planned and orchestrated. For those of you too young to remember those years, check with those of us who were present back then.

The owo must have our guns in order to have total control. The leadership of that group and all that cluster around it are the enemies of FREEDOM, of AMERICA and of GOD HIMSELF. Anything coming out of the wh and most everything going into the wh these past four years and esp. today are lies and are evil, and most certainly are our enemies.

  @ Kickagrandma I am taking your advice. Im 38 My Mother is somewhere around 70 I often ask here well where you wearing tye-die and living hippy what exactly where you doing? She says no I was pregnant with your sister being controlled by your dad. My dad was a New York Police Detective at the time. I tell myself I would have looked at the hippies and said the same thing every time like when I see the occupy people (lower case on purpose). Get a job, get a life, take a shower, grow up. I see patterns when I see the professional protesters sons or daughters of rich people some black sheeps not very smart. Because most people simply dont have time for that. Even at 20 I would have been able to give maybe two hours protesting then Ok gotta go, much less all day all night lol. I have to go to work school home whatever just not here and not for this. My personal responsibility would not let me sit around stinking in a tent.I just weep for and feel bad for my children and others.   Everyone: When they try to force this on the public, which will be any day now, we (millions of us) need to show up in Washington D.C. and ALL of our signs need to say “Fast and Furious”. We can even have our mouths taped just like the Left does. If all anyone could see was a sea of signs that all read “Fast and Furious” we would really drive the point home. Unequivocally. That whole business which resulted (purposely) in murders was the sole purpose of of F&F. It was about gun control. They think they have gotten away with that and with Benghazi.

  Write to your representatives in the house and senate to stand up for the rights of lawful gun owners! Please stand up for the rights of gun owners. More gun laws would not have saved those kids in Newtown, Connecticut. The shooter stole the gun from his mother and killed her. He would never have been allowed to purchase a gun. At the same time in China – 22 children were stabbed in a knife attack. Gun Laws will not solve this problem with violence.

  The Chinese attacker wounder 22 kids with a knife. I don’t know if he would have had time to actually kill 22 kids with a knife. I figured if he blocked the door & took out the teacher 1st, then the kids would have no where to run.
  
  So I figure if there is a will there is a way even if that will is evil.
  
  I have also seen a report of a hopeless Chinese man stealing a minibus to run people over. You could kill 20 or 30 people easy that way, if you steered it into a crowd queued up for some reason.
  
  What could a liberal argue? Heavy fines for people that leave keys in the ignition? Vehicles that can only be activated by people who are authorized drivers? Banning vehicles?
