‘Generous’: Remember John Kerry’s Praise of Syrian Dictator Assad?

With multiple reports circulating that President Barack Obama will nominate Sen. John Kerry to be his next secretary of state, it’s worth remembering the praise the Democratic senator has in the past heaped on Syrian President Bashar Assad — worthwhile since dealing with Assad’s crumbling regime and the militant Islamists who threaten it will likely be the top item on his foreign policy agenda if he takes office.

It wasn’t so long ago that Kerry made repeated pilgrimage to Syria, meeting with Assad five times between 2009 and 2011. Last year, he famously used the adjective “generous” to describe Assad, as the Wall Street Journal’s Bret Stephens recalled in a column this past summer:

On March 16, 2011—the day after the first mass demonstration against the regime—John Kerry said Assad was a man of his word who had been “very generous with me.” He added that under Assad “Syria will move; Syria will change as it embraces a legitimate relationship with the United States.” This is the man who might be our next secretary of state.

As Michael Rubin recently wrote in Commentary Magazine, Kerry’s staffers described “their collective cringe when, after a motorcycle ride with Bashar al-Assad, he returned to Washington referring to Bashar as ‘my dear friend.’”

Jim Geraghty of the National Review reports that “as recently as February 2010, Kerry was telling Middle Eastern leaders that he believed Israel should return the Golan Heights to Syria.” Imagine the situation Israel would be facing today if it had heeded the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman’s advice. The strategic plateau overlooking all of northern Israel might today be on the verge of falling into the hands of Syrian homegrown terrorists and imported Al-Qaeda members.

Kerry clearly believed Assad was honest and a force for stability. The National Review quoted a WikiLeaks document which revealed Kerry had told the emir of Qatar in November 2010, “Assad is a man who ‘wants to change’ and that Israel should cede the Golan Heights to the Syrians ‘at some point.’”

The National Review detailed more about Kerry’s positive impression of Assad:

After a “long and comprehensive” meeting with Assad in April of that year, Kerry described it as “a very positive discussion.” A month later, Kerry was back in Syria. His spokesman, insisting that “Syria can play a critical role in bringing peace and stability if it makes the strategic decision to do so,” asserted that Kerry had “emerged as one of the primary American interlocutors with the Syrian government.” Despite the senator’s interlocutions, Assad, it appears, has made the wrong “strategic decision.”

Before Kerry took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in September, the Washington Free Beacon in an article titled “An Affair to Remember: John Kerry Hearts Bashar al-Assad” called Kerry the Syrian dictator’s “highest-ranking apologist in American politics”:

Yet for all his admiration—his numerous trips to Damascus, his many public words of praise for Assad, his insistence over many years that the butcher of Damascus is a man of peace who seeks rapprochement with Israel and the United States—Assad has never repaid Kerry’s generosity with reforms.

Kerry thwarted efforts during the Bush administration to diplomatically isolate Syria after the administration’s own efforts to engage the regime ended in failure in 2003. Kerry served as the Obama administration’s envoy to Assad, leading a delegation to Syria just days after Obama’s inauguration. There he listened to Bashar Assad lecture him that Washington must “move away from a policy based on dictating decisions.”

The Beacon pointed out that even the Washington Post referred to Kerry as one of Assad’s “prominent admirers” in the United States. This, despite the fact that Assad has been a key backer of the terrorist group Hezbollah and that his regime possesses one of the world’s largest stocks of chemical weapons, including the nerve agents sarin and VX.

Already the Twitterverse is chiming in, with London-based Syrian broadcaster Rana Kabani posting: “Remember when he [Kerry] pontificated that genocidal maniac was a reforming kinda guy?”

Jonathan Schanzer, Middle East scholar at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies also tweeted about the news of Kerry’s upcoming nomination, saying: “Assad cheers from Syria.”

If Kerry is confirmed as secretary of state, questions remain: What words will he use to describe Assad now that nearly 40,000 have been killed in the country’s 21-month conflict? Will Kerry continue to pressure Israel to give up the Golan Heights?

In light of Kerry’s history of appeasing Assad, will Susan Rice’s congressional opponents rue the day the United Nations ambassador took her name out of the running?

Once again Obammy shows he is unable to appoint someone even close to being a moderate. With leadership like this there is no chance of any good policies of ever being passed.

I think the whole debacle of the Susan Rice nomination to Sec. of State position was just designed to make Kerry look like a ‘good alternative’ and therefore draw less opposition than if he’d been the first suggested. He’d have been rejected–but now–compared to Rice he looks plausible and has already been accepted by several GOP Senators.

Kerry will get the job. If the anti Israel Chuck Hagel moves into the Sec. of Defense slot the noose will be drawn even tighter. Obama with his pro Islam, anti Israel leanings is about to desert Israel completely while he continues to march America toward being just another Muslim nation.

I can’t believe Kerry could be the only thing between us and World War. This is the guy that changes his mind every 5 minutes if it suits him. The guy that lied in front of Congress about his fellow soldiers. The guy that did everything he could to get his three Purple hearts so he could get out of Viet Nam. The guy that got turned into something resembling an orange pumpkin just before a Presidential debate because someone convinced him to get a spray tan. When are we going to have leaders that do not resemble something out of a Comedy circus?

      Hey Einstein:

Surely you gest!!! It is evident that you worship your hero, the Moron that currently takes up space

in the White House, but have you, as an American citizen, performed any worthwhile research into

the background of this Moron, to ascertain the real truth concerning his background and how Kerry

is a Communist sympathizer, similar to the POTUS. Do yourself a favor, and perform the research.

It is all on the Internet. Had you and other Americans performed the research before you voted for

this closet Muslim, he would not have been re-elected. Why pray-tell did vote for him, when he is the

only president that was never vetted in 2008, and in 2012? The idea that he refuses to submit a valid

birth certificate and cares not to reveal his personal records, indicates to me, a red-flag; many red

flags, if you follow. Your hero is the puppet of George Soros, a one-time Nazi collaborator in his

native Hungary during World War Two. Soros is the real president of the United States, operating

under the guise of “THE SHADOW GOVERMENT.” Do you think that a Moron with an I.Q. of only

94, maintains the wherewithal to govern a nation as large and complex as the U.S.? Not hardly.

Your hero is nothing more that an empty suit, with no positive vision to correct the situation that both

himself and Soros have misguided and directed the U.S. Therefore, these two shitbirds must be

removed from American politics, if you follow.

I’ll admit to being naive & hoping Assad being a reformer when he took over form his father in 2000. Assad was educated in the West & was an optometrist in London. I thought he would be better. But I am a lot less naive than Kerry.

” Following the Iraq invasion by US and allied forces, Assad was accused of supporting the Shia insurgency in Iraq. A US general accused him of providing funding, logistics, and training to Iraqi and foreign Shia Fundamentalists to launch attacks against U.S. and allied forces occupying Iraq.”

I have not liked Assad since he supported insurgents in Iraq & ordered Hariri killed in 2005. If Syrian had not assisted insurgents there would have been many fewer soldiers killed in Iraq by hundreds if not 2,000. Iran would still have been a problem but it would have been easier to contain. Apparently, this knowledge has no effect on that POS known as John Kerry.

There was a stage production in London I believe that included jokes based on current events.

The ideal was to make the play “fresh” & not dated.

Well they wrote the play, thought up some jokes & inserted them into the play.

Well opening night came, the play started & the jokes were told. The audience laughed. Success!

This when on night after night, until over time people stopped laughing.

The playwrights & the thespians had unwittingly swerved head on to a bit of psychology.

People have a 2 week time period in which they remember current events.

I think Democrats know this, which is why the combine this knowledge with Goebbels “BIG LIE” technique & a sycophant media, who constantly have to wipe their lips dry, to lie to the public.

Yes, Assad used to be our ally, just like the other dictators that have been overthrown.

Everyone these days seems to forget several things about these dictator thugs.

    1) Assad, Gaddafi, Mubarak and Saddam kept relative peace with Israel. Mubarak was involved in the Oslo Peace Accord as was Jordan (next on the list of overthrows)
    2) They were brutal thugs but they kept the Muslim Brotherhood out of power.
    3) They were all secular leaders and did not impose Sharia law
    4) The people were not wealthy but they were not living in abject poverty, unlike they living today.

The United States and our European counterparts are assisting in a brutal and deadly coup by the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda in these countries for some globalist and/or anti Iranian agenda all in the name of “democracy”. Well look where “democracy” in Libya and Egypt got the Christians and other minorities; burqas and soon death.

Even though Romney wasn’t my choice for President, I had such high hopes for John Bolton being named Secretary of State and Allen West as Secretary of Defense….. ah, dreams…..

“Assad has never repaid Kerry’s generosity with reforms.”

Not with reforms but Kerry has been paid with millions of dollars from Assad. Look at his Swiss bank accounts..
Remember who’s Kerry, a unscrupulous profiteer that didn’t doubt to seduce the widow of Republican Senator Heinz in order to seize his wealth.

      Platonician

Or as Jerry Doyle has said & I’ll paraphrase ‘he bastardized his children so he could marry ‘Theresa Heinz’.

When he divorced his 1st wife, there was probably nothing wrong with her. He simply had fun, sired some kids & simply wanted something richer or younger.

The cowardly leftist attitudes of Kerry and Fonda also reside in the “right fringe” as well. I remember all the “neo-con” talk by Kerry supporters back in ’04… and we get the same thing from the radical right fringe where “Pink” isn’t just a color… it’s a part of their Liberal-tarian anatomy.

      How is Kerry a dirtbag?

On December 14, 2001, 3 months after the attacks of 9/11, Kerry said on Larry King Live that “I think we clearly have to keep the pressure on terrorism globally. This doesn’t end with Afghanistan by any imagination. And I think the president has made that clear. I think we have made that clear. Terrorism is a global menace. It’s a scourge. And it is absolutely vital that we continue against, for instance, Saddam Hussein. ”

After the invasion of Iraq, when no weapons of mass destruction were found, Kerry strongly criticized Bush, contending that he had misled the country: “When the President of the United States looks at you and tells you something, there should be some trust. “[81]

Kerry had spoken before the war about the sorts of weapons many believed Saddam Hussein had. On the Senate floor on October 9, 2002, he said that “According to the CIA’s report, all U. S. intelligence experts agree that Iraq is seeking nuclear weapons. There is little question that Saddam Hussein wants to develop nuclear weapons. ”
      ***

Kerry is merely a conniving, 2-faced liar. Calling him dirtbag is too harsh for someone that would figuratively stab in the back for political reasons.

Kerry is just another clueless member of the Chicago radicals’ Obama Administration whose decisions and statements seem to range between ” changing ” everything that kept America prosperous and safe, performing a continuing drama before their 24/7 Lap Dog Media, hiding the truth behind the false ” transparency” claims, and / or making policies and rhetoric that divide the country along race, class, gender and age differences. Guess that’s what happens when an entire political party becomes followers of Rules For Radicals. Bad times. Bad results.

That was my first impression. Obama chooses the absolute WORST people for powerful posts because he wants to destroy America.

Look at Obama’s choices: The VP seems to be mentally retarded. The head of “Justice” is untrustworthy. The head of “Treasury” is a tax cheater. The head of “Agriculture” thinks American farms are irrelevant. And the list goes on and on.

America, how could you be so blind and so stupid?
