Mayor Bloomberg: We Need an Assault Weapons Ban Because Mass Shootings ‘Only Happen in America’

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is known for his staunch support for stricter gun control, and his outspokenness in championing that cause.

After Friday’s shootings in Newtown, Conn., Bloomberg made a point of opining about the necessity for another assault weapons ban, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday and claiming that the kind of mass shooting under discussion “only happens in America.”

National Review Online reports:

“What the president can do is number one, through executive action, he can order his agencies to enforce the laws more aggressively,” Bloomberg said. “I think there’s something like 77,000 people who have been accused of lying when they applied for a gun permit. We’ve only prosecuted 77 of them.”

Bloomberg didn’t mention his source for those numbers during the program.

“Nobody questions the second amendment’s right to bear arms,” the mayor continued, “but I don’t think the founding fathers had the idea that every man, woman, and child could carry an assault weapon.”

Dismissing the idea that politicians had reason to fear going against the NRA, Bloomberg remarked, “The NRA’s number one objective this time was to defeat Obama for a second term. Last time I checked the election results, he won and he won comfortably. This myth that the NRA can destroy political careers is just not true.”

Host David Gregory did push back on Bloomberg at one point in the broadcast, pointing out that the guns involved were all purchased legally, and that only one of them could have been prohibited under an assault weapons ban. Bloomberg admitted that his policy preferences couldn’t necessarily have stopped this particular incident, but still argued that there was a trend at work that could be mitigated by stricter gun laws.

That’s right Doomberg.Obama can enforce existing law more aggressively,and should.Go after the criminals and fraudulent applications for firearm purchases.But it still won’t stop these nut jobs from doing their evil deeds.Look at what that sick SOB McVeigh did in Oklahoma,without using a firearm.Look what happened in China recently,with a man using a knife.
Maybe its time to consider mandatory trigger locks on firearms.If the unlocked firearm is used in a crime,the owner of said firearm gets prosecuted to the fullest and is just as guilty as if he/she were the person who did the criminal act.

  Why not use a tried and proven method to end these mass shootings at schools? Israel had a problem with terrorist attacks on their schools. They trained those teachers who volunteered to carry and use a concealed handgun in a tactical manner. The next couple of terrorist attacks on Israeli schools went decidedly differently than expected as the teachers would shoot the terrorists before they could kill very many kids. As a result, the terrorists no longer considered the schools easy targets and stopped attacking them. The most effective method for stopping a mass murderer is to simply put a couple of rounds into his/her chest and another in the head. END of shooting rampage.

  I say we make the Capitol building a Gun free zone, and ban all armed guards from politicians. Let’s see how the will like those apples. I’m sick and tired of these liberal politicians making no sense, and spouting their fantasy policies bases in lala land. They can go to work in their secure job sites, and they leave our children unsecured. Every parent should call their representatives to ensure schools are not left unprotected any longer, and to repeal these stupid feel good do nothing liberal and RINO laws. If these politicians want to disarm us, and deny us a right to protect our children, then let them lead by example and abandon all security protocols ensuring their safety.

  Criminals don’t even register or get licenses. What makes you think they’ll use a gun with a lock? Mexico has banned all guns from citizens, yet drug cartels get them from third world countries and other black markets. We don’t live in a perfect world. It be nice if all our hands were tied and only permitted to be released when doing something lawful, wouldn’t it?

  I blame the Fed. It has allowed people in this country to act selfish and irresponsible to the point that this country has lost its soul. Outside of that – that’s Life! S!!T happens. In nature it’s natural s!!T. In a man made society it’s man made s!!t. Innocent people die all the time on the interstate thanks to carelessness by others yet we don’t so nationalize and put faces on those tragedies. Nobody needs to see and hear all of this stuff. What’s the point? I’m gonna look at this a little less than everyone else then talk a little about it then go about my usual business. Watching this or not won’t make a bit of difference in my life outside of pointless casual conversation like this. It’s a local issue.
  
  We all know what can happen when someone wants to kill. They’ll find a way to do it no matter what you do unless you are prepared to defend. The government will never be able to prevent horrors like this and your a fool to think they can. There are enough willing people in this country that if left alone they will a find a way of dealing with these problems without the federal govmnt getting involved. It’s a local issue!!!!! After all the guns are removed from society he will have to eliminate cars & trucks. Can you imagine what would have happened if this guy had gone to NY City and stole a UPS truck and ran down a crowded sidewalk full of Christmas shoppers. The same thing for a car hitting a big crowd at high speed. I guess we could ban them to and put everyone on a bicycle but I want to see the politicians on bikes also and just think how healthy it would make them.   There already ARE rules about trigger or action locks on firearms, it is one of the biggest things stressed by the BATF when getting an FFL.
  
  The root of the problem that progressive ostriches refuse to consider, the people! Crime is committed by people, not objects, regulating the object still does not address the real issue, that people refuse to be responsible for their actions, or hold others responsible for their actions. It’s always, ‘oh you are a victim of something or another….you poor baby’.

  I bet she did have trigger locks or at least they were locked in a gun safe. I read an article that she was killed in her bed with 4 shots to the head. He obviously may have planned this ahead and waited for her to fall asleep. After that he decided to take the weapons that she purchased and registered with the state police as is the law for Connecticut.
  I also read on the Blaze that she was trying to find help for her son’s mental issues but was not finding any, well you can blame Federal Money Policy and Obama care for that problem. This might have prevented the shooting because he would have been in treatment maybe even in a committed facility but Progressive Politics and their abuse of “committed” patients. So we have the hesitancy to put people back into facilities for the mentally handicapped.

He is a master manipulator of fools. Fools in America will see that headline, believe it, and blindly follow his direction. Violence and the criminal use of firearms is a complicated issue that is beyond most people to understand. A ban on firearms will not decrease violence in the U.S. because there are too many firearms already in circulation. The U.S. would have to declare marshal law for decades, void the Constitution, and do warrantless searches of every home to even put a dent in firearms. I’m pretty sure that would lead to violent clashes against the government.

  We have plenty of laws on the books concerning gun laws but they have to be enforced. I would be in favor of a “coolinf off period”, meaning several days after apply before the buyer could pick up the gun. many states have this but gun laws, the details are the business of the states. The states supersed the Feds in gun control. Another thing, I have never seen a Pol that is able to describe an “Assualt Weapon” that is truthful. The largest mass killing that comes to mind happened in either Sweden or Finland Mr. Mayor, a country with the most restrive gun laws..

And yes, Switzerland has low crime rates, just as all those other socialistic countries in Europe, most of whom have outlawed guns.
  
  The US on the other hand is the mostly heavily armed country on Earth per capita, and has the highest rate of gun violence, murder, mass murder and spree killings.
  
  The fantasy on the right is that the answer to gun violence is more guns. And more assault weapons, and larger clips that allow a person to fire 100 rounds in 30 seconds. Psychologists call that magical thinking: more guns means less gun violence. Lower taxes increase government revenue, cutting taxes for the rich benefits the poor. Black is white, up is down, war is peace, ignorance is strength.
  
  No wonder Republicans want to cut funding for public education. They want an uneducated population who can accept that helping their rich donors is the best way to help the poor, those without a voice. And if kids grow up believing that the Earth is 6000 years old, so much the better.

  Hey bloomy, news flash, mass killings happen every single day in other countries. Let’s use one of the ones you guys on the left are in love with as an example, the middle east. They kill each other on a daily basis with guns, rockets, bombs, beheadings, beatings, stoning, and the list goes on. America is the only place that does not have the level of violence other countries have, and it is because of gun ownership. Next, look at Japan (total gun ban) why is theirs so low???   The solution to this problem is to get back to treating mentally ill people like mentally ill people. It isn’t to try to hold other people accountable for another person’s actions. It is almost always somebody that is severely mentally ill that carry out these killing sprees. People that would be locked up in institutions if we really cared about stopping these senseless attacks.
  
  All mandating trigger locks would do is render guns useless for defensive purposes. You’d just be giving one more advantage to the criminals that couldn’t care any less about following laws to begin with. The reality is gun control laws only benefit the people that have no intention of following them.
  
  Besides beyond a reasonable registration/application requirement gun control laws are blatantly unconstitutional. Even the liberal leaning supreme court we’ve got now has been invalidating ridiculous gun control laws left and right because they so blatantly violate the constitution.

I can just see some carjacker coming to me, as he did, and I say, “could you wait while I unlock my gun so I can defend myself?” or when the guy broke through my window….same thing.   And that would have helped in this situation, how? The original owner of the guns WAS DEAD when the shooting occured. And, “assault weapons?” You do realize he commited this massacre with HAND GUNS, right? So to connect any gun ban with this incident, you would have to ban Glocks and Sig Saurs, HAND GUNS. He left the assault rifle in the car.

First off the similarities between this shooting and the one in Colorado or anywhere else is the instability of the people involved. Lanza had some serous mental Issue, Metal health Professionals and his parents who SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING BEFORE THIS HAPPENED he set out to kill. Another tradgy yet to unfild is how these so called professionals will avoid jail for their inability to do what was so obvioulsy needed long before that tragic day. GUNS DO NOT KILL, PEOPLE KILL.   @valiant1776. Great post. Through the weekend, I have not been able to stop myself from imagining those terrified children in their last moments. But, thanks to you, I am reminded me an equally gruesome sight. Europe, 1939: The blurry gray photos of uniformed animals, lining up entire villages before the graves they were forced to dig – and the tumbling of families into the pit. Then there’s the one of the SS man with a gun pointed at a mother clutching her child seconds before a single bullet ended both their lives. Do I need to go on?

Ten of the twenty children attended a nearby perish, and the other children attended other nearby churches. Why shouldn’t the parents and residents of that town exercise their right to educate their own children, and govern their own local affairs? Why should a politician 600 miles away be able to pass a nationwide law to control a town he’s never been to, and a people he’s never met? I guess that little MIkey’s never heard of Norway or the mass murder that took place there? He doesn’t want anyone to have ANY guns, except for his precious PD, and his well armed bodyguards. I wonder how he’d like to be without his bodyguards? Not very much I’m sure, but then we have to remember that he’s important. Or at least he thinks he is.

The rocket scientists like Bloomberg, Schumer, et al never stop to think that these mass murders all occur in “gun free zones” where the average citizen is prohibited from carrying a firearm, but which makes absolutely no difference to someone intent on murder and mayhem. The idea that ONLY the police and military are capable of defending themselves or anyone else is drummed into so many people’s heads that the idea of self defense never enters their minds.

Ban gun free zones instead of banning guns, and the problem will be greatly reduced.

It’s time to change the narrative and quit being so nice. Anyone for gun control is explicitly to blame for mass shootings. When these things happen and you immediately bring this up I will accuse you of ignoring the real issue of a sick culture and things we can do to remedy it. When you take the conversation into never never land of more gun control you make dialogue impossible for real solutions. When I go to work on monday and someone brings this up, they better be prepared for a verbal offensive.

Exactly, tell that story to the people of Norway who suffered an even larger massacre. Does anyone know the statistics of the number of stabbings in the USA compared to the number of Gun murders? How many die in car wrecks a year? Beaten to death with heavy objects, such as bats, etc? Get real criminals will always have guns and really they are not that hard to make yourself. My heart goes out for these families but the biggest curb to stop these things from happening is to bring back the way families were supposed to be such as loving and caring, having meals together, being able to discipline your children. Parents need to get involved in what their children are reading, watching and learning at school. I was a regular pain in the arse to teachers when my kids were in school. Also we need more mental health facilities to house people like this guy..

It is amazing how everyone says our Founding Fathers wouldn’t have allowed assault rifles in the second amendment. Assault rifles are the problem. Magazine capacity on a weapon is the problem. Ammo is the problem. Semi-automatic weapons are the problem, as if a 6-shooter would be okay.

The problem is never the weapon which was used. It is always the person behind the trigger.

Someday someone will have to explain to me the difference between lining people up in a row and killing them with a single bullet vs using an AK-47 to do the same job.

How many mass killings are done world-wide and a gun is never used? A suicide bomber never uses a gun.

Politicians would do well to remember that. The gun is never the problem. It is only the person and their intentions which are.

What this nation needs more of is, Jesus! Banning guns of all types isn’t going to do anything,.but help the mindless killers. The highest kill rates by weapons guns, knives, and machetes is due to gun control where conceal carry is not allowed. Just check the stats on the web, and you will find Chicago city, New York, city and others who do not allow conceal carry have high crime rates. Morality is becoming a thing of the past and killing to often seems to be the answer to every nut cake’s trouble.
