Newtown Church Evacuated During Mass After Bomb Threat — Update: All-Clear Given

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Worshippers hurriedly left a church Sunday when someone phoned in a threat as parishioners remembered 20 children and six adults who were massacred at an elementary school, but police later said nothing dangerous was found.

The threat interrupted a busy mass, sent worshippers hurrying from the church and touched off a large police response days after the worst massacre of school-age children in U.S. history.

Halfway through the noon service, the priest stopped and said, “Please, everybody leave. There is a threat,” said Anna Wood of Oxford, Conn., one of the worshippers who left.

At least a dozen police in camouflage SWAT gear and carrying guns arrived at the St. Rose of Lima Church. An Associated Press photographer saw police leave carrying something in a red tarp. Guns drawn, they searched the church and adjacent buildings.

Gunman Adam Lanza, his mother and eight of the child victims attended St. Rose of Lima. It is a Roman Catholic Church with an adjacent school, which Lanza attended briefly.

The church hosted overflow crowds at all three morning Masses Sunday.

Wood said everyone left calmly but described a congregation edge. One boy, about 9, left with his mother.

“He asked his mom, `Mom, why are we leaving?,” Wood recalled. “The mom couldn’t answer. She just started crying.”

It appears like the powers of hell have been unleashed. this country has turned its back on God, starting with obama. What else would anyone expect? He’s not causing it to happen, but He’s not allowed to intervene because they dont want Him around.

Anybody can touch the corners of his eyes and take long pauses when they speak to feign sadness. Obama didn’t have a tear and didn’t waste time saying he was going to do something about guns regardless of politics. He is NOT a dictator yet. If the majority of Americans do NOT want gun control then there should be none. Politics cannot be ignored,…even by obama. That POS obama is a communist. Communist want our weapons so we cannot defend ourselves and they can run roughshod over us. It Will NOt Happen.

  I believe I read where Lanza lived 5 miles from the school. To me that is far enough away to be out of sight & out of mind.
  It should have been far away in time by at least 6 years from when he last attended assuming it is a K-8 school.

  I think that after a lull criminals & people who have a grudge against society will adapt. The 1st person who hates society & creates a mass casualty event using a bomb or via a poisoning will be copycatted. Then we will be back to square 1 with liberals insisting on banning objects while ignoring the root cause.
  
  People can use bombs, vehicles, poisons or bio-warfare. After a gun ban some people will still be bullied, will still be fire from their jobs for cause or unfairly & will still be bitter.
  
  England still has a lower murder rate than the U.S., but it is climbing every year. Imagine that. And their demographics are changing to match outs too. And it isn’t the color people. It is the lack of assimilation. You cannot not assimilate another culture or ethnic group that is hostile to your culture or ethnic group(s).

Damn! I just wept through our service. Half the congregation was in anile black and half were in red, as was I. And unarmed for the first time in a year for not wanting to become red-meat for the inevitable discussion – that did not happen.

Sad that these live among us .. and having worked in Community Mental Health ..I know that they walk among us at alarming rates.   A bomb threat helps keep the story in the news, but I don’t think there was ever a question that it would be in the news at least until the 25th (with reverberation for 3 to 6 months.
  
  Really the only thing that can knock it off the front page is a lot of time (A really lot of time) or another big news story like Damascus falling, scuds with chemical war heads used or something like that.
  
  Too many bomb hoaxes or an actual bombing do not make a case for gun control. I believe they hurt it.
