SNL’s Powerful Tribute to Connecticut Shooting Victims: Children’s Choir Sings ‘Silent Night’

NBC
“Saturday Night Live” departed from its usual comedic opening sketch to pay tribute to the victims of the Connecticut elementary school massacre with a children’s choir performing “Silent Night.”
The tribute was a rare moment for the comedy sketch show, after which the members of the New York City Children’s Chorus shouted out the traditional, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” The performance was the show’s only reference to the shootings.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:46amI used to watch it way back in the 70s when it was actually funny, but it’s so crude and vulgar now, I cannot watch it. As far as this secular, altered version of the song, you must remember that Lorne Michaels is a Jew and the actors on it are more than likely non-Christian as well (based on the things that come out of their mouths), so even this version is a stretch for them. It wasn’t great, but it could have been much worse, so they get an E for effort.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 12:36pmYeah, they sanitized the words all right. However, they could have done something much, much worse, like, oh, say…..tweeted that it was a fortunate thing that Mrs. Lanza had guns in her house to protect herself or she wouldn’t be alive today like Jo Miller from Comedy Central did. And that nasty, unfeeling and caustic tweet was retweeted by Andrew McLaughlin, a former Obama senior White House aide. Then Piers Morgan retweeted it. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/12/15/Former-Obama-Official-Daily-Show-Writer-Mock-Newtown-Killer-s-Slain-Mother
So, you know what, I’m okay with them sanitizing the words. They didn’t mock anyone, they didn’t blame anyone (yet) and the use of the words “Sleep in heavenly peace” very well may become the tag line for these little ones.

No more can we allow politicians to permit that our children be sitting ducks when a madman walks in. Let’s show them we’re serious and are prepared to safeguard our kids in schools. Let’s get the ball rolling. Please take this offer serious. I’ve read of some firearms instructors offering the same after this tragedy. Let’s do something about it…

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:56amTo DaveCorkery,
Evil is with us and you are helping to advance it. God gives us the rules and guidance and free will. Evil draws us to ignore him and act against the rules. God did not make us a collectve, oppressed by mandate. He made us individuals, with free will to make our own choices and fix our own problems. You are the fruit of one of our problems as was that shooter, that problem being the abscence if virtue, morality, responsibility and guidance being taught in our schools. As generations grow up with out that, they tend to not have it to teach their kids and the schools aren’t there for the next kids either. We have come so far as not even being allowed (technically just out of fear of an expensive, [though easy to defeat in an honest court] lawsuit brought on by some one low in virtue and morals ) to speak of the founders, using their own words of their inclusion of religious, namely Jude o Christian inclusion in setting us on our course as free individuals, each born with and equal set of rights.
Your free will sets you on an anti-God course that you are free to choose, but your verbal insult, assault and mocking of God and the faithful shows the founders point to be true, that you lack the virtue and character required of each citizen without that influence.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:56amDave, it is unfortunate that you see God as the fixer of problems. God created us not to intervene. He gave us free will and the tools we should follow. We are on this world to live and die; some will die before we think they should and some we will be happen are gone; like this shooter. It all stems from the choices we make. If God fixed everything, then how would we learn, how would we empathize, express anger, and all the other emotions “man” experiences. Man is not perfect, we will make mistakes, some more than others. You have a misguided idea what God if for and his purpose. I pray that you look past yourself and your failings and embrace the one person who can help you live a loving and fruitful life.
God is all knowing, but he isn’t the all fixer. If that were the case, we’d have no gays, rapist, murderers, etc.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:06am@DAVECORKERY,
You obviously don’t understand the concept of free will.
That aside, where does your morality come from? You believe that “murder” is wrong? Why? If there is no God, then there is no morality and so no murder. Everything is natural. Everything is neutral, and so nothing is good or evil.
To quote the Joker, “Why so serious?”.
In advance of your only possible response, that your man-made morality is just as valid as spiritual morality, I reply that that is axiomatically false. Morality derrived from reason is not morality. It’s an admission that morality doesn’t exist, and you’re back where you started.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:19amI believe that when we are faced with the results of progressive policy and the immediate announcement of government needing to do more (gun restrictions), it really is the best time to rub their face in the horrors of their current assault on the rights of the individual to defend themselves.
It is oppressive, big government policy that cost most of these adults and children their lives. These children had a property in their lives and a right to live those lives, but that was denied by government oppressing the education system’s tools to teach the shooter virtue and morality and by oppressing tools of self defense. If you want to feel emotion, feel it for what caused this horrible failure of government to protect these poor little children. The song was beautiful, but I am not unaware of the NBC tradition of assaulting the principles and influence that help a society minimalize these horrors. I am happy to see that performance and appreciate those children’s talents, but won’t advance the holding high of NBC just because they place a glimmer of light upon their culture dismantling structure.
I boycott NBC.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:28amFor Dave Corkery, some words from George Washington’s fawewell address
….Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that National morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
’Tis substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to every species of free Government. Who that is a sincere friend to it, can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric.
Promote then as an object of primary importance, Institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge.

Revelation 21:4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
Psalms 37:11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth,

I agree that by and large they hate us Christians, I agree that there may be some ulterior motive in play here, I agree that we have little to no reason to trust their motives, but that said, wouldn’t it be nice one time to give credit where it is due. They DID have the children’s choir sing this song, they DID NOT remove “HOLY” from the lyrics, they DID NOT make a joke out of this tragedy. For reasons I have stated in other posts I say we should at least give them credit for those things and be thankful for that much. Then go on the attack when they say or do stupid stuff and our criticism will be just. Let the Libs corner the market on cynicism and unjustified attacks, that is ground we do not need to take, that is ground that can’t be adequately defended and it undermines our rightful defense of tradition. There is plenty of stuff that is legitimately objectionable where we should vigorously defend our position and attack with all due alacrity, there is no reason to sully ourselves by attacking them when they finally do something right. Take a lesson from Ronald Reagan and give credit freely whenever possible so as to undermine their assault on us as jaded hateful rubes… just my opinion

The easiest way to do that is to acknowledge it when they get the one thing right. That is all I’m saying, you may not agree and that’s fine. Like you I know folks that only show up when they need something from you. Remember that a central tenant of Evangelical Christianity is that God will bring someone to their knees in order to get them to turn to him. If some of the writers of the SNL staff have done so, then excellent. If this is just a ratings ploy then we lose nothing by giving them a little credit for at least saying the right thing and we gain credibility when we go on the offensive for their assault on Christianity and conservative thought.

Sir, I couldn’t agree with you more regarding the choice that SNL made regarding the presentation of Silent Night to commemorate the murdered children and teachers in Connecticut. For them to show class is of course unusual, but we thank them for their choice.
While I write this however, I am watching Sen.Dick Durbin spouting his gun control nonsense and trying to use this tragedy to push his control agenda. He has no class despite trying to cover himself by using the usual claptrap of assault weapons not being needed.
The second amendment guarantees the right of citizens to to keep and bear arms. “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Please note the comma after the words, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state,” That entire part of the sentence deals with securing a “free state.” The second amendment is not about hunting and other weapon sports, but about the right of U.S. citizens being able to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That desire for tyranny is constantly displayed by governments desire to take away the rights guaranteed by the second amendment.
The bottom line is that no law can eliminate the dangers of murderous acts committed by mentally unstable individuals. There is no such thing as a 100% guaranteed safety zone for anyone.

Many NBC execs have homes in this part of CT.
Their kids and grandkids go to schools not unlike Sandy Hook Elementary.
I take this tribute at face value, and welcome the effort.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:55amEastinfection, not having read any of your other posts, I don’t know what end of the spectrum you stand in. But having read this one, I say you are at least a reasonable person. I know many others out there are understandably jaded, but at least in the face of something as horrendous as this, we should holster our weapons for just a couple of minutes for a truce when it is offered to us like this…plenty of time to fight later.

I mostly stand beside “the spectrum” scratching my head. I believe in freedom.
Freedom to worship. Freedom not to.
Freedom to own guns. Freedom to avoid them.
Freedom to speak. Freedom to remain silent.
I try to decide how i feel about people individually- not in groups.
I make every effort to give people the benefit of the doubt (within a reasonable bubble of self-preservation).

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:36amVery nice and appropriate of SNL. And “Silent Night” certainly is the case in many homes in America as we grieve for all the victims including the hurting and angry killer.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:35amSometimes you guys are unnecessarily bitter.
Just because SNL is full of Libs does not mean they don’t have a heart, too.
Do you honestly think these cast members want 1st graders to get massacred?
…that their sympathy is phony?
If so, grow up.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:12amI don’t disagree with you about “they have a heart and concern for the loss”, however with the spirit and meaning of Christmas under attack by most mass media, ACLU, atheists, etc these days, I find it refreshing that they know that the only true comfort in this world is the belief in Jesus and God his father. Despite their revision to the lyrics.
There are know atheists in a foxhole.

So what if they do? They can mock whatever they choose to mock, as can you or I.
Doesn’t bother me one bit if someone mocks my beliefs.
My tenants are stronger than such mockery.
I’ll even laugh at those jokes if they are clever enough.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 8:52pmThere is financial arrangement.
Glen makes money not only on the pay per click but also the personal information you gave up to register to see the link. This was demonstrated in an email reply to another reader weeks ago that basically said that SNL is important to TheBlaze because of the revenue it provides them.
Sad but true, Glenn has sold its readers out.

This was clever marketing by the SNL’s staff. They hate us Christians.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:35amSNL did not use a Christian song. The 1st stanza was correct, but SNL scrubbed out all references to the Christ from the second Stanza. They used children and an age-old “Christ”mas song to invoke emotion, but they conveniently omitted all the substance that makes this song GREAT — i.e., the HOPE, the CHRIST of God. By scrubbing references to the Christ child from this song, SNL’s presentation was premised on a lie.

For the families,

For this Nation ….
That needs to return to the silence & Holiness of The Night.
Father….
Give those of Connecticut Your Peace & hold them closely…

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:39amRandy, man do we really have to devolve to instant insult. I would like to see just once in a while that people give credit without a backdoor insult. If we maintain intellectual honesty for ourselves then we are more credible when we level legitimate criticisms at our intellectual opponents. If we hand out proper compliments when we something we are surprised at yet approve of, we make our criticisms more weighty. To that end I say kudos SNL for showing unexpected restraint and a little grace, now when I criticize you, no one can complain that nothing they could do would satisfy me as this just did.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 8:58amI can’t believe that no one has posted on this. The fact that SNL didn’t turn this into a skit on gun control says that even they know intuitively that this is the face of evil in our time. I would like to commend them for showing such restraint in the face of their instinct. I know this looks like a backdoor insult but I am truly humbled by their restraint and am proud to be able to see that they have this much decency in them…it seems that they have shown more restraint than I was able to manage.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:07amLONGTALLTEXAN, Excellent catch on that, and I have to agree with you. But, I also have to agree with RANDY’s point above about how surprising it was to hear those children actually sing “Holy Night” in the song. I am impressed at that considering how so many other Christmas performances are abridged these days.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 9:44amFor some, it takes a tragedy to turn back to God. I pray it is for the long-term and we start feeling unashamed to acknowledge His loving grace. I hope that one lesson we can all take is that the solution isn’t guns, more stringent laws, more regulations, but to develop once again a decent and moral society, where people actually feel ashamed to even think of doing something awful to someone else; where our actions do affect other people.
