President Obama Speaks at Newtown, CT Prayer Vigil: ‘We Will Have to Change’

President Obama spoke for a nation in sorrow, but the slaughter of 20 children left the president, like so many others, reaching for words. Alone on a spare stage after what he described as the worst single day of his presidency, the commander in chief was a parent in grief.
“I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depth of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts,” Obama said at an evening vigil in the grieving community of Newtown, Conn. “I can only hope that it helps for you to know that you are not alone in your grief.”
The massacre of 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday elicited horror around the world, soul-searching in the United States, fresh political debate about gun control and questions about the incomprehensible – what drove the suspect to act.
It also left a newly re-elected president openly grappling for bigger answers. Obama promised that in the coming weeks, he would use “whatever power this office holds” to engage with law enforcement, mental health professionals, parents and educators in an effort to prevent more tragedies like Newtown.
“Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?” he asked the audience.

Obama promised to lead a national effort for “change,” but left unclear what exactly the change would entail.
“What choice do we have?” the president asked. “Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?”
As Obama read some of the names of victims early in his remarks, several people broke down, their sobs heard throughout the hall.
For part of his speech, Obama discussed the joys and struggles of being a parent (transcript via the Washington Post):
It comes as a shock at a certain point where you realize no matter how much you love these kids, you can’t do it by yourself, that this job of keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something we can only do together, with the help of friends and neighbors, the help of a community and the help of a nation.
And in that way we come to realize that we bear responsibility for every child, because we’re counting on everybody else to help look after ours, that we’re all parents, that they are all our children.
This is our first task, caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged.
And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we’re meeting our obligations?
Can we honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm?
[...]
Can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? [Emphasis added]
He continued with another push for change:
We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change.
We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society, but that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely we can do better than this.
If there’s even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that’s visited Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek and Newtown and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that, then surely we have an obligation to try. [Emphasis added]
President Obama closed his remarks by slowly reading the first names of each of the 26 victims.
“God has called them all home. For those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on and make our country worthy of their memory,” he said.
Here is video of the president’s remarks:

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on December 17, 2012 at 8:17amThere is rumor mr president that your administration is running guns to syrian rebels aka al quida linked terror groups…There is proof that your administration sold guns to mexican drug cartels…There is proof that your administration bought huge stock piles of hollow point pistol ammo for groups like the social security admin and the USGS. On the news there is a man being strung up for a media trial because he shot a thug who attacked him while he was patrolling his own neighborhood. It sounds to me like you want to arm every last person on earth except law abiding American citizens. Here on the west coast a 7 and 11 year old tried to car jack a woman at gun point. The Dad is now in jail because it was his gun but the kids were set free because the DA wont prosecute under age 12 unless it is a measure 11 crime. What does that tell those kids? “oh it wasnt your fault it was your evil dads fault for daring to own a gun” If one of my kids goes crazy I cant do anything about it until they hurt someone and then its my fault for raising a monster. This is all part of the plan and the sad thing is the progressives dont even try to hide it that much. These shootings are happening in places with strict gun control and yet they say we need more. How many school shootings happen in Texas

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:42pmGod has given us the job of protecting our children and will help if we ask. God only interferes with our natural evil human tendencies with a loving jolt of spiritual conscious warnings. We all choose either good or evil. All of us have sinned. We are the problem, not God. God, like loving and responsible parents has given us all the nurturing, power, tools and opportunities we need!
Unfortunately for us, if we repeatedly refuse to listen He stops talking. We can then easily lose any virtue and end up with a reprobate mind – a scary pathological thing to have in a family.
What does the Spirit bid us to do? Obama might consider beginning a campaign against African American killings of African Americans in Chicago, Oakland, L.A. or Richmond, – or maybe he won’t!

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:43pmMr. President, Please look at the violence in Chicago with the strict gun laws in that city. How many shootings and killings happened this weekend? This year? This shooting isn’t about gun control, but about mental health and getting people the help that they need. What is in Obamacare about mental health? Have you talked to parents with children that desperately need help that can’t get it? This Sir, is the problem. These guns were obtained illegally by the shooter, just as most if not all the guns used in the shootings in Chicago.
Please, Mr. President, do your homework. You are supposed to be the “smartest president,” yet do not think through all the facts and are quick to push your own agenda that makes no sense if someone thinks about the real facts.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:22amWe always expect the religious leaders to mourn with us and to care for us after these tragedies. We as a people know we need God, yet we deny him in our public schools. I was filled with gladness and peace tonight seeing our communities come together to receive and accept the love and companionship of God. After every tragic event we come to God. We know we need him. We know our kids look to us and him for guidance. Our schools must be governed by us once again, and not by politicians in Washington. We have given the radical decisions of the supreme Court a run for half a century. They hace experiment with their radical agendas. They have failed, and are destroying us, and I’ve had enough. If we can’t govern our own local affairs when it comes to our own children, and must depend on a centralized national Government to educate our kids, we’ve lost the battle already. This great federal republic of free and independent states is lost if we lose the right to determine the fate of our own kids. National Socialism is destroying this nation. Secular humanism is destroying this nation. Progressive policies are destroying this nation. Enough already.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:26amObama: “What choice do we have?”
Answer: We have ONLY 2 choices. (1) Return wholeheartedly to religion and morality – specifically to the person of Jesus Christ. OR (2) Subject ourselves to tyranny and lose our beloved freedoms forever.
“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” ~ John Adams
Mr. Obama – WE already know what YOUR solution will be. It will be as all your other “solutions”. Abdication of Constitutional liberties in favor of Federal TAKEOVER. What we are about to witness in this nation is nothing less than a huge leap away from Liberty and towards a totalitarian State. The irony is that we have allowed it to happen – more – we have invited it by rejecting the moral principles and religious teachings that granted us the inner disciplines to handle Freedom.
Prepare yourselves.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:32amI say we make the offices where these liberal politicians work gun-free zones also, and immediately disarm all their guards. Would they like the same treatment?
The deluded left wants our school teachers and school children to be human shields against armed maniacs. The progressives are to blame. Liberal Hollywood has corrupted our culture. The music industry and the rest of the mainstream entertainment business has an almost monopolistic influence in the lives of our children. Why is it okay today for a kid to have fun by playing video games that shoot and kill dozens of people? I urge parents to keep your kids away from the filth of this world.
Explain, you leftist idiots, why a teacher’s life is worth less than a police officer? The police uses a gun to protect himself, are our children worth less? Why must teachers wait for the Government? Are they slaves? Don’t they have a personal right to defend themselves? You can’t win without ignoring the real issues, and resorting to myths about how if we were all unarmed the world would be all jolly and gay. Mexico prohibits all guns to its citizens. Their murder rate two times more than the US. School children are dead because RINOs and liberals passed laws to leave our kids sitting ducks for armed maniacs. Government schools have no security personnel while every politician that works in a Government building is secured to the teeth. What’s more important, our children or the likes of Feinstein?

When you hear a gunshot; what goes through our mind. When you see another death by gunfire on the news what do you think of? When you hear about a young girl who grabbed her father’s handgun and uses it to protect herself from an intruder, lucky for her the guard was not on and bullets were in the chamber, he is now dead and she is alive. Does knowing this change your view any? I personally am prior military service, and served over 12 years combined. I served to protect the rights of everyone and I believe the real truth should not be hidden from the people.
The second amendment (Bill of Rights), says, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” To me it is very plain and very clear. The meaning of shall is final and there is no other way of something to happen, and the meaning of infringed in short means altered or taken away. So why is it we have so many laws that change the way we look at what was written? The political left believe they have to discover the meaning of what was written in the first part of the sentence; about the well-regulated militia. And completely ignore the “Federalist papers” that were written by the founders to explain exactly why they put what they put in the constitution.
Taking a look at the Federalist papers #46(founders), you will fin

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:34pmThis shooting is yet another tragic example of the failed, grotesque insistence on helpless victim zones where any crazed gunman can be assured of a large number of disarmed, undefended, helpless victims, all crammed into one place, where he can kill many children before an armed defender arrives from elsewhere. It is disturbing and sick that the federal government so hates the right of the American people to bear arms, and so hates their natural right to self defense, that the government insists on making them helpless, disarmed victims for anyone who cares to kill them. And in this case, all of the teachers and staff were willfully disarmed by the Federal Government, by force of law and threat of prison, to ensure that they would be disarmed and incapable of saving the lives of the children entrusted to their care.
That makes the Federal Government complicit in the deaths of these children, and in fact an accessory to their mass murder, by forcibly disarming (with the very real threat of prison) all the teachers, all the staff, and any parent who may have been on school property. That stupid law guaranteed the shooters would meet no immediate armed resistance, which is exactly what is needed to stop such an attack.

I do not agree. The teacher that died shielding children had nothing but her flesh between the killer and the children. A steady stream of bullets would have saved them all. Or at least a metal detector at every entrance with loud alarms and one or more armed to the teeth guards. In case you don’t know in the last 2 years Obama cut the 180 million/yr budget for school protection nationwide. Saying no money. Not long after, Obama gives 20 billion dollars in fighter jets to the terrorist group the muslim brotherhood in Egypt. Now tell me where the hell the true insanity is coming from. He gave 111.111 times more money to terrorists than he could spare to protect our children. Oh wait. That ratio was BEFORE he cut the 180 million. It is now EVEN WORSE than that. So I imagine all those lefties who voted for the nightmare in chief should think about the blame they carry. Also do not forget the killer was buzzed right in when the day before he was in an altercation at the school he had no business visiting to begin with. Zero tolerance means no one but staff, students, and guards should be allowed in the school while children are inside. Only exception being scheduled speakers or medical, police, and similar personnel. Why was the killer allowed entry?

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:41pmSo ask yourself this. If upwards of two years ago Obama had not started cutting money for school protection while giving hundreds of billions to his union and special interest peeps, (not to mention his muslim terrorists friends overseas), would there have been metal detectors and armed guards in this school on Friday? This is what America should be talking about. Had the relatively small sum for school protection been increased not cut two years ago and on after, does anyone think this school would not have already been upgraded with better protection?

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:36amChet, I’m sure teachers hiding under a desk and hiding in closets is not the answer either. Somebody needs to be train to put up some kind of resistance. I wonder where the men were. I haven’t heard a word about a man at the school. I’m sure most elementary teachers are women but surely there as a male custodian or in some other role. This makes me think this was a really soft target. Taking the guns out of the equation, how many females can overpower a 20yr male? At least it appears the principle made an attempt.
BTW, schools going on lock down is a false since of doing something. Bullets travel through doors and walls. The medical examiner and media keep talking about how many times the kids were shot. Moving children into huddles makes them a easier target to hit and more chance that multiple hits per shot fired. I would guess that is why there was so many wounds per child not because every hit was a separate round.
I guess my point is that somehow we need to make this harder for these punks. If they think they will get some real resistance, they might not be so eager to try these things. Instead I think we will face another false sense of doing something called an “assault” weapons ban but is actually just a “scary looking” weapons ban.

Metal detectors and armed guards? They have those at the airport, where we all agree that they are necessary, but every time they search a kid, people on this site write in calling them sex criminals and demanding that they be thrown in jail. Are those the guards you want to put in the schools? Or should we use prison guards? They are better trained, but they are also better paid. Putting them in each of the almost 100,00 pubic schools in the United States because there might be one attack of this kind on one school somewhere in the country every several years does not seem like a cost effective solution.

Your joking right? Do you think everyone involved in security is an evil ogre? Just exactly why is it reason cannot be applied without resorting to bouncing between extremes? To get those guns in that school would have set off alarms had there been such a system as I described. Coupled with an armed guard at the entrance by said detector the killer would have gone no further period. If there are instances as you describe there should be legal accountability. If enforced these incidents would cease. As with the TSA they continue because there is no accountability and no repercussions for bad behavior. Are you able to reason in a manner which does not encompass bouncing between extremes or do I ask too much? Clearly there were no metal detectors at this school thus the guns got inside. Saying there should be no guard nor warning system to detect and counter weapons because someone may be abusing authority is similar to the circular reasoning as the left saying because there are evil people we should all be disarmed. Unless reason prevails no solutions will be found. Try thinking in less extreme ways. We can have security and safety while safeguarding rights so long as wisdom, reason, and intelligence are applied. The problem is all three are violated every time an elected official or a non elected bureaucrat are involved in the solutions.

This is not what I read in the NYT on Saturday. The best we can do is think of things based upon the information we are given. It would be effective if the windows could not be broken into. Obviously you have to plug all leaks to hold water. In any case your point is useless since what you are saying is we should do nothing at all. Continuing to lay down like sheep to the slaughter may be fine for you but it is not acceptable to me in the least. Every point you provide in all your posts are nothing but “we cannot do anything” negatives which is counterproductive and without merit. Reasoning in negatives as you keep doing is the very reason nothing productive is ever done. Try adding to the solution once in a while.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 2:47amChet, I should add the cost of an alarm system on the windows would have been a small price to pay for the safety of the children. If police had started heading that way the moment alarms went off how many could have been saved? The complete lack and failure of any kind of security both in personnel and technologically cost many people their lives, most just beginning. This must be addressed rapidly in every school in this nation.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 4:29amI said right at the top that I don’t have the answers, I just don’t think that guns in schools is it. If there are almost 100,000 schools that are open about 180 days a year and less than one attack on a school per year, then there’s no better than a one in 20 million chance of an attack at any given school on any given day. Boredom, frustration and guns are a bad mix. Training is a double edged sword; nobody wants to train to react at a second’s notice only to have to wait twenty million days to do anything useful.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:57pmIn defense of TROLL & CHET,
They are free to resist, as I can only change myself.
I would like to believe, however, that if I were to live my religion to the best of my ability, I would be blessed with kindness, love, and happiness.
I also believe that if they were to deny my religion to the best of their ability, they would be bitter, sad, and empty.
This would cause a striking contrast, and as most people desire happiness, they would ask me what my secret was.
This would give me an opportunity to testify of Christ and explain to them the gospel.
They could then use their agency to decide for themselves whether they wanted to follow the Savior as well.
However, with all humility, I recognize that I am not living my religion to the best if my ability, therefore the contrast is not as stark s d they have no desire to live their lives in accordance with my beliefs because they do not see any benefit.
I have seen many comments from non-believers to the effect that “if being a Christian means acting like so-and-so, then count me out.”
Maybe we Christians aren’t being the examples the Savior would like us to be. I know that I have much work to do…

I have read the ostensible words of the people you regard as prophets. What do you think that they predicted that has actually come to pass after it was predicted and was not something that was just bound to happen somewhere sooner or later? (Bear in mind that if you read about the event in the same book that you read about the prediction, there is no reason for me to believe that the prediction was actually made before the event.)

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 2:23amYeah, I know that the different books of the Bible weren’t written at the same time, but I also know that for every prophecy that seems to have come true later, there’s one that didn’t. People who want to believe tell themselves that these are prophecies that just didn’t happen yet even when they’re mixed in with the ones you point to as having come to pass. They also tell themselves that the prophecies don’t always mean what they seem to say. “Babylon” means Babylon when it’s part of a prophecy that came true, but it symbolically means some other damn place when it’s part of a prophecy of something that never happened. So what did any prophet get right that is specific enough to not just be a lucky guess or a bit of inspirational fiction writing, and which isn’t part of a long passage that also includes things that never happened?

Isaiah 53 (which is proven to predate Christ) seems appropriate in this thread and in this season:
“3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 ¶Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
And Isaiah 49:
“14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.
15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.”

“[W]hen the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually,” At Virginia’s U.S. Constitution ratification convention (June 14, 1788), reported in Elliot, Debates of the Several State Conventions 3:380.
“The rights of conscience, of bearing arms, of changing the government, are declared to be inherent in the people.” Fisher Ames, Primary Author of the First Amendment, Letter to F.R. Minoe, June 12, 1789 (reporting to Minoe on the amendments proposed by Madison).

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:43amOur fathers during the American Revolution owned the same arms the continental army used. Some of them even owned private cannons. Some regiments relied on the arms of citizens when they were in short supply. Only the insane, ignorant liberals believe they have no right to defend themselves against a tyrant. They are the Benedict Arnolds of our day.
The Constitution states “arms”, not firearms, swords, knives, matches, or clubs. It does not prohibit or limit by cosmetics or effectiveness. When the British sent their troops to our towns to disarm us, and to take our arms and ammunition away, local residents gathered together and kicked their arses so dan’ hard that the whole world heard them. No more Liberals dominating the talk from now own. No more slaughtering of innocent, helpless children will occur in our schools. Its time for us adults to act with common sense and set up and demand adequate protection in the schools our kids attend. It’s time parents start governing their own local schools, and kick the liberals in Washington out of our towns.
Stupid liberals like Bava would prefer that innocent, defenseless children wait in front of a madman until police come. I’m sick and tired of their ignorance and lies. Everyone in that school followed these progressive laws and stayed unarmed, and relied on the armed police to protect them. They got slaughtered. These liberals hold no facts or weight to their perverted policies, they’re sick.

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 10:18pmWe must do something……?! Change? I’ll bet he doesn’t mean putting security measures and armed guards in public schools, probably more like taking away gun rights from the citizenry. How about implementing a new branch under DHS like the TSA and call it the “Community Zones Armed Resistance Service”, (CZARS), and have 1-5 trained per public school depending on size. Naw, he wants to take away all our guns and leave us totally defenseless. How dare he and the progs make this into political hay! Dispicable! Honoring the innocents that were slain is one thing, but really, were any of them Muslim or Bahai’?? I know “they”all stand with us at our time of mourning. The UN cares….yeah, right!

Posted on December 16, 2012 at 11:03pmThe federal government has only committed a few (only?) massacres of citizens in the past hundred years, and every one was a Pyrrhic victory. I can’t imagine many agents and police will be willing to follow this order.
I sense that Obama’s ego has finally gotten the better of him this time. He will throw the full weight of his MSM propaganda machine at this, and he may get some small ban on some class of assault rifles, but Americans aren’t going to disarm for Obama.
