As the country grieves for the families in Newtown, Connecticut, where a crazed gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday, members of Westboro Baptist Church have announced their intention to picket the funerals of the deceased.
Westboro Baptist member Shirley Phelps-Roper first reported the plan on Twitter, CBSNewYork relates.
Here is the first tweet, followed by an “explanation” of sorts in which the woman replies to a tweet of Fox News’ Bret Baier:

(Photo: Twitter/@DearShirley)

(Photo: Twitter/@DearShirley)
The woman, whose profile picture features signs reading “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “Soldiers Die 4 Fag Marriage,” writes multiple times shortly thereafter that “God Sent the Shooter” to punish Americans for various sins.
It should be noted that her language is somewhat open-ended though, and various sites are reporting that they intend to picket memorials and vigils, not just funerals.
Disgusted by Westboro Baptist’s actions, the hacker group Anonymous stepped in on Sunday.
According to msnNOW, the hackers released the private information of Westboro Baptist members online, including phone numbers, professions, birthdays, known relationships, home and email addresses, in retaliation.
Anonymous also included an accompanying video in which they excoriate the self-described church in the strongest of terms, and pledge to destroy it.
Gizmodo took a transcript of part of the video:
“Since your one-dimensional thought protocol will conform not to any modern logic, we will not debate, argue, or attempt to reason with you. Instead, we have unanimously deemed your organization to be harmful to the population of The United States of America, and have therefore decided to execute an agenda of action which will progressively dismantle your institution of deceitful pretext and extreme bias, and cease when your zealotry runs dry.
We recognize you as serious opponents, and do not expect our campaign to terminate in a short period of time. Attrition is our weapon, and we will waste no time, money, effort, and enjoyment, in tearing your resolve into pieces, and with exposing the incongruity of your distorted faith.”
Here is the full clip:
This isn’t the first time Anonymous has targeted Westboro Baptist, which made its name by picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers.
This time, though, things seem to be escalating.
Anonymous is now actively petitioning the U.S. Government to label Westboro Baptist a “hate group,” and have nearly twice the number of signatures required to elicit a response from the White House.
“Their actions have been directed at many groups, including homosexuals, military, Jewish people and even other Christians. They pose a threat to the welfare and treatment of others and will not improve without some form of imposed regulation,” the petition, which has close to 50,000 signatures, reads.

Dec. 16, 2012 at 9:58pmAre they really mad? If you believe that homosexuality is a sin and an abomination. If you have this intolerance in your heart, is it really crazy to protest it? OH…you don’t like the place they protest homosexuality. You do believe that god is upset about America accepting homosexuals . . . is it really a big leap to think that god would kill soldiers and children to make this point? If you believe this completely intolerant load of cr*p, you should be protesting at funerals, you should be assassinating abortion doctors, you should be observing the sabbath and avoiding shellfish. Live for god or don’t, just don’t act like a godly saint when all you are is hypocrite.

My only hope is that someday, since they have found a way into the media spotlight that they might somehow stop making spectacles of themselves, and perhaps begin to learn the concept of the unimmaginable height, breadth, and depth of God that we as mere humans will never comprehend, and might someday actually do good. He has his plan, I’m sure it had nothing to do with the westboro idiots insulting families in sorrow at this time though, planning to protest funerals of babies.

Dec. 16, 2012 at 6:04pmCT has a law on the books that was passed in 2007 to protect families from protests at funerals. It was written with the intention of standing up to appeals to the Supreme Court. PA 07-98—HB 6060 AN ACT CONCERNING DISRUPTION OF A FUNERAL SUMMARY:This act prohibits certain activities at certain locations from 60 minutes before to 60 minutes after a funeral, which is defined as a ceremony or memorial service connected to burying or cremating an individual. It subjects to punishment anyone who: 1. (a) willfully makes or assists in making a noise or diversion that is not part of the funeral, (b) intentionally disturbs the funeral’s peace or good order, and (c) is within the “boundary of the location” of the funeral or within 150 feet of the boundary’s intersection with a road, pathway, or other entrance or exit from the location; or 2. (a) is within 300 feet of the boundary and (b) intentionally, willfully, and without authorization impedes the entrance or exit from the location. The “boundary of the location” is the property line of a cemetery, mortuary, or house of worship or the reasonable property line of another location used for the funeral. The act makes this conduct a class A misdemeanor (see Table on Penalties). EFFECTIVE DATE: October 1, 2007, but PA 07-187 makes it effective upon passage…

From the mission statement on their homepage:
“Established in 1955 by Pastor Fred Phelps, the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) of Topeka, Kansas still exists today as an Old School (or, Primitive) Baptist Church. We adhere to the teachings of the Bible, preach against all form of sin (e.g., fornication, adultery [including divorce and remarriage], sodomy), and insist that the sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace be taught and expounded publicly to all men.”
They have no affilition as they are not a sub-group of any other Baptist or Christian organization. Many christian organizations have claimed that Westboro does not claim to be a church to purge them from other christians, but pastor Phelps certainly says otherwise in their mission statement. You really do need to keep up, and avoid sources that state lies as truth for convenience sake. Westboro is a christian church, with a pastor and a flock and an interpretation so literal it makes the rest of the fundamentalists blanch. Their mythical creatures are evidently way more ferocious than your mythical creatures, but they are one of you whether you like it or not.

Dec. 16, 2012 at 6:05pmYup! I suspect ‘Anonymous’ is just whistlin’ Dixie, along with the VILE VITRIOLIC ‘church group,’ and neither will show up to ‘dance.’ – I’m also goin’ out on a limb by saying a few Patriot Riders (vets that PROTECT those paying their respects during the process) won’t be too far from the events. Enough already….

Hope some other nut takes care of this problem.

Hell I might even make a shrine to the person or persons that shows them what evil really is.
I my opinion they are more evil than the killer. Whish they would end their lives in the same manner.
I usually dont get that radical but F these sacks of $hit.

Dec. 16, 2012 at 6:36pmWell this is a different kind of Christian Church, and it will take another “different kind of Christian Church” to put an end to it. Or, is this something you want the government, or us agnostic and athiest to handle for you?

Dec. 16, 2012 at 5:47pmWestboro Baptist Church members are sure not Christians.
They give Baptists and Christianity a bad name.
Westboro is nothing but an evil cult of hate.
They are doing Satan’s work.

Dec. 16, 2012 at 6:25pmYou don’t get to decide who is christian or not, or who is Republican or not, or who is exercising their rights to keep and bear arms, or not.
They have faith in jesus as a god and follow the tenets of the New and Old Testaments. They may take that stuff a little more literally than you do, but they meet the definition of christian and are self-described. Call them crazy, but call them christian.
Seems it is quite popular to disavow anyone in any ‘conservative’ group that behaves in a less-than-popular way. One apparently can only be a Republican is if one speaks and votes exactly the ‘prescribed’ way. Dissent is forbidden, and banishment is often retroactive, as in ‘he was never a real Republican anyway’. Same, evidently for gun ownership. ’56 million gun owners did not see their guns used in murderous slayings this week’, and for those that did, apparently they don’t count. It is unfair to paint all christians with the bad acts of a tiny few christians, to paint all ‘conservative’ Republicans with the reasonable votes of the few, or to paint all gun enthusiasts with the bloody slayings of the few. But here at the Blaze I read constantly that all muslims, all Arabs and Persians really, are bomb stapped terrorists, that all hispanics in America are illegals, that all blacks are on welfare, all gays have AIDS.
Two things you have to call a man, for he will never call himself; a hypocrite and a racist.
