First Photo of Jailed Marine Jon Hammar Sent to Family From Anonymous Mexican Email Account

Chained to a bed in one of Mexico’s most notorious prisons, Marine veteran Jon Hammar is seen shirtless with a look a despair on his face in a new photo sent to his family from an anonymous Mexican email account.

“His eyes look a little lost,” Hammar’s mother, Olivia, told Fox News Latino. ”It doesn’t look like him. I feel like my blood pressure is through the roof.”

Hammar and a friend were detained by Mexican authorities in August for a gun-related incident. The two men had crossed the border and provided the paperwork for the weapon they were carrying, an antique shotgun. However, police eventually impounded their RV and jailed both men, claiming it was illegal to carry that type of gun. Hammar’s friend was later released because the gun did not belong to him.

Fox News Latino has more details on the newly released photo:

The photo shows Hammar in solitary confinement inside the Matamoros state prison, nicknamed CEDES. A scraggly looking Hammar is seen shirtless and barefoot with a beard, jean shorts and with his feet over what appears to be grey crocs. He is sitting on an old twin-sized mattress in a room with chipped walls. A gallon of water and a refrigerator are seen to his right. Hammar is staring at the person taking the photo and does not appear to have any visible injuries.

It is the first photo released of Hammar since he and a friend were detained by Mexican authorities in August.

According to Hammar and his family, the gun was an antique shotgun that had belonged to his great grandfather.

The charges against Hammar appear to be over a technicality. Mexican prosecutors allege the length of Hammar’s shotgun barrel, which according to Mexican law has to be longer than 25 inches, was too short, although a discrepancy has emerged over how the barrel was measured.

The photo was reportedly sent anonymously from a Yahoo.mx email account.

“I found your email on the Internet and I wanted to send you this photo…I am not giving you my name because I like my job and I don’t want to lose it. Juan is OK but I hope he is let out quickly,” the email read in Spanish.

Hammar’s mother claims she and her husband, Jon, have received phone calls in the middle of the night from prisoners trying to extort money from them. But she thinks the photo comes from “someone trying to help.”

But who exactly sent the recent photo is still a mystery.

“Where he is in the prison, he’s right next to the administrative offices…All of the inmates, staff, all of the visitors walk right by there. So anyone could have taken the photo,” the mother told Fox News Latino.

At age 18, Hammar enlisted in the Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq where his unit provided security for Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, protected election polls and disrupted insurgent cells.

Am I the only one seeing Mexico in violation of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo? They repeatedly send infiltrators across our borders (some disguised as families, to be sure), the allow their terrorist citizens in the form of cartels to kill innocents on both sides of the border, and now they holding a US Citizens, furthermore a Marine Veteran, wityhout due process or recourse. These are acts of war. We should revert to the territories prior to the Treaty, with the US owning everything north of Guatemala and take back our $17,000,000.

  SDAJUMPMASTER: Before the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo all of that territory belonged to Mexico. Before that, to the Spanish Empire. I am sure Mexico would be happy to take that territory back if that is what you propose.

  I am down for a little “trip” to Mexico. I speak spanish. The hardest part would be getting the hardware necessary to extract him. And I mean, it is Mexico! One can likely just buy an AK-47 or better off any street corner for a fairly decent price. Heck, one might even be able to get their hands on some of the AR’s that Eric Holder sold them. Would it not be ironic? American guns, sold to Mexican criminals, and used to free a kidnapped Marine. Almost sounds like Tom Clancy!

None of what you said matters, good for them for providing paperwork but it doesnt change the law. It is illegal to bring a gun into Mexico, period. All the marine had to do was research on the US Consulate office and he woudlve known that it was agasint the law. So regardless of showing paperwork it is illegal. Thats like me brining a kilo of drugs across the border, just becasue i show it to you doesnt make it any less illegal.

I am a former USAF war vet and have seen Marines in action alot. You basically need to be able to write your name and you can be a marine. Perhaps if he would ” do his own research” he wouldnt have these problems. Marines arent known for their brains

  Two long guns per hunter and 40 rounds of hunting ammunition per firearm are permitted by the Mexican government for each hunter to bring–listed on paperwork filed.
  
  Regions of Mexico have fallen under total control by narco-traffickers, making these matters difficult to resolve as they operate outside legal convention.

  You, sir, are a fool. I also am an Air Force vet, and have seen many Marines in action. I am here to tell you that there are no finer men and women in this world. I made many friends of marines while stationed in Okinawa, and 30 years later I still keep in contact with them. They are BRAVE people, and far from stupid! You must be one of those who use the words duty, honor, country, or patriot as a punchline. You say they are stupid? They did the paperwork with the Mexican govt. The paperwork was approved by some sort of official, or they wouldn’t have had the gun. Another official does not recognize the approval of the first one, so the Marine goes to prison. I see the Marine doing nothing stupid there….I see the usual Mexican bureaucracy being stupid, and of course you being stupid by maligning the Marine.

@ Everyone: It’s a shame that this guy is in jail in Mexico. Since August. We should bring him home. Right AFTER we bring BOWE BERGDAHL home. He’s been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009, and he is still THERE. We went and got that doctor after he’d been gone 5 days. Lots of folks want the SEALs to go after this kid and bring him home. Please, PLEASE don’t forget Bowe! He hasn’t had a birthday, Christmas, or Thanksgiving with his family in THREE YEARS. Can you help get his word out?!

This Marine is not high priority for the Obama gang otherwise they would brig him home today. Look at how long Bowe Bergdahl, an active duty soldier, has been missing. No one in this administration has ever mentioned him. Bowe is hardly ever talked about on the news and the one time I did hear a discussion about him it was on Fox.

  IDAHOBLAZE…………I have been spreading the word about Bowe for two years now. I went as far as putting * WHO IS BOWE BERGDAHL* on the back window of my Expedition which has garnered some interest and questions. I still have the message on my truck. I called several Houston radio talk shows trying to get the hosts to start a conversation about him. None of them were aware of him and were not interested.

What he did was against the law, anyone can go on US Consulate website and see clearly it is against the law to bring any firearm into Mexico. If you want ot hunt you have to file with SEMARNAP which he didnt do. I am a former war vet myself but that doesnt give me any protections from going into a foreign country and breaking the law. It sucks he is in jail but it couldve been easily avoided.

  He did register with the Mexican authorities, it’s when they found out that he was a former armed services member that they went back and nabbed him just over the border. He took all of the correct steps, he stopped and declared it at the border, they just don’t obey their own laws in Mexico.

Mexico sucks too, but I’d hold off on SEAL TEAM 6 for the time being. If you don’t want to end up in a Mexican jail… stay the he77 away from there, especially if you’re carrying a weapon of any type for whatever the reason regardless if you’re forme Military or whatever. It’s like the jack wagons who go to Iran and Iraq to supposedly hike and wind up in their jail system.

Want to solve this problem in a hurry. Tell the Mexican government that we will return ten thousand illegal Mexicans to Mexico every day until they release this kid, and that we will count the days retroactively from the day he crossed the border. He’ll be back in a heart beat. Mexico does not want even one of their people to return.

By the way. Saw Gerry Rivers, a.k.a. Geraldo Rivera on Fox the other day. Rivers, who would like you to think that he knows everything about EVERYTHING, made the statement that he had been in many Mexican prisons and knew for a fact that these Mexican prisons would NEVER chain a prisoner to his bed. Hhmmm…check the photo. Sometimes I get the feeling that Gerry Rivers doesn’t have any idea what he’s talking about…he just talks.

  The problem is that this prison is controlled by Los Zetas and the Gulf cartel and not by the government. I believe that these criminals want weapons from Obama in exchange for the Marine.

This happened in AUGUST….why are we just hearing about it NOW? Evidently the gov’t doesn’t want to save this marine or they’d have done it just in time for the elections. Something is seriously off about this (about our gov’t lack of response to it). surely if he was told he could take the gun across the border, they could explain that there was a misunderstanding through no fault of the marine’s.
