First Photo of Marine Jailed in Mexico Sent to Family From Anonymous Mexican Email Account
Chained to a bed in one of Mexico’s most notorious prisons, Marine veteran Jon Hammar is seen shirtless with a look a despair on his face in a new photo sent to his family from an anonymous Mexican email account.
“His eyes look a little lost,” Hammar’s mother, Olivia, told Fox News Latino. ”It doesn’t look like him. I feel like my blood pressure is through the roof.”
Hammar and a friend were detained by Mexican authorities in August for a gun-related incident. The two men had crossed the border and provided the paperwork for the weapon they were carrying, an antique shotgun. However, police eventually impounded their RV and jailed both men, claiming it was illegal to carry that type of gun. Hammar’s friend was later released because the gun did not belong to him.
Fox News Latino has more details on the newly released photo:
The photo shows Hammar in solitary confinement inside the Matamoros state prison, nicknamed CEDES. A scraggly looking Hammar is seen shirtless and barefoot with a beard, jean shorts and with his feet over what appears to be grey crocs. He is sitting on an old twin-sized mattress in a room with chipped walls. A gallon of water and a refrigerator are seen to his right. Hammar is staring at the person taking the photo and does not appear to have any visible injuries.
It is the first photo released of Hammar since he and a friend were detained by Mexican authorities in August.
[...]
According to Hammar and his family, the gun was an antique shotgun that had belonged to his great grandfather.
[…]
The charges against Hammar appear to be over a technicality. Mexican prosecutors allege the length of Hammar’s shotgun barrel, which according to Mexican law has to be longer than 25 inches, was too short, although a discrepancy has emerged over how the barrel was measured.
The photo was reportedly sent anonymously from a Yahoo.mx email account.
“I found your email on the Internet and I wanted to send you this photo…I am not giving you my name because I like my job and I don’t want to lose it. Juan is OK but I hope he is let out quickly,” the email read in Spanish.
Hammar’s mother claims she and her husband, Jon, have received phone calls in the middle of the night from prisoners trying to extort money from them. But she thinks the photo comes from “someone trying to help.”
But who exactly sent the recent photo is still a mystery.
“Where he is in the prison, he’s right next to the administrative offices…All of the inmates, staff, all of the visitors walk right by there. So anyone could have taken the photo,” the mother told Fox News Latino.
At age 18, Hammar enlisted in the Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq where his unit provided security for Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, protected election polls and disrupted insurgent cells.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 5:27pmNow, who do I blame for this fiasco? I blame the marine. Look, whoever you are you did a very stupid thing, and now you have to pay for your stupidity. Another thing, the family of this marine says, that the Mexican Government wants to get paid, I say pay them, get the marine back in to USA soil and slap him in the head, for doing a stupid thing that now his family is forced to pay off

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 4:37pmLooks like we need to remedy our mistake of the mid 1800 when we gave Ma-hee-ko back to Ma-hee cans. Ma-hee-cans are unable to operate a vegitable pushcart without oversite.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 1:10pmThat is why I’ll never go back to a 3rd world country. We have the best country in the world, and the last bastion of freedom, at least what’s left of it. It’s just not worth the possibility of being picked out for special treatment.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 12:43pmThis is like hezbollah in mexico. They are doing what Iran did back in 1979, but with only one Marine. They are saying we have him and we are humiliating him and you can’t do anything about it….you are powerless. This is a tactic of terrorists.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 11:56amIf the Marine was a Muslim Black Panther, Mexico City would be surrounded by now. There is a clear message coming out of this regime, if you are a white diplomat or service member you are on your own. It just gets worse………….

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 10:51amWhy on earth would you bring any firearm into Mexico? Sorry, that’s just plain stupid. This is a culture and government rife with corruption – and you think you can bring a gun into their country? Evidently, he didn’t bring enough cash to bribe the authorities when they were measuring barrel length.
I live in Arizona, and have traveled into Mexico, via automobile, twice. Each time we were stopped – and our paperwork was questioned. It wasn’t until we offered to make a $40 “donation” to their department, that we were allowed to proceed. I’ve heard the rates have gone up. Freaking third-world country.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 10:33amObama should shut down the border until Hammar is released. Since he will not even speak up, no citizen should travel to Mexico or buy anything made in Mexico.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 8:48amWhen will White Americans learn to stop going to Mexico? All the President has to do is close the borders until OUR citizen is released. But when has the president did anything for a White American?
He just let 4 die in Libya and went to bed without losing a minute of sleep. Oh but he sure spoke up when a black friend of his was confronted by a White cop.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 6:47amWhile I find Mexican law deplorable in every way shape or form, we as Americans have to wake up and realize these dog eaters are not our friend. Everybody from the 3 year panhandler to the top officials in their government have their hands out. DO NOT go to that cess pool of a country. You will get harassed, robbed, thrown in jail or murdered and by the way…..THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU AMNESTY!

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 3:20amDon’t go to mexico, and don’t buy anything from mexico. Close the border crossings from Texas and stop the tourism and the money that goes with it until they let him go. If we had any politicians with a pair they would say that publically, and this Marine would be out in 5 minutes.

Seriously, this situation sucks balls, but this is what happens when a nation elects a marxist administration. The Obama’s and their entire administration are treasonous bastards.
Hope each and every one of them burns in Hell.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 11:49pmI can’t understand why Obama ordered Navy Seals to go in Afghanistan and rescue a volunteer doctor on some crazy mission paid for by Soros and got one of our Seals killed, but can’t use force to get this Seal out of the grips of these crazies in Mexico. We are still unsure what the doctor was doing there Guess that goes to show you whose side Obama is on and how much he cares for those he sends in harms way. The progressives wanted this doctor but, most caring Americans want this Marine home so it becomes political and there is your sign.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 10:59pmThis is what we get for our money….$1.9 Billion that we send to Mexico per year; and we can’t get this soldier out of this jail? He clears customs on the US side for the weapon, they say he’s “good to go”….he goes what, 100 yards to the Mexican customs and they have an issue with the rifle? WTF? So why didnnt the Mexican Customs officials send him back to the US side to work it out? Why hadn’t US Customs come to his aid by saying they screwed up?

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 2:49pmI do as well. However, did you read the article? My statement was due to the fact this person was trying to help the family by providing some information, but they stated they would not give their name because they like their job. Now, of course, since this is all over the Internet, I doubt they will be working there. It won’t be hard for them to figure out who released the information. That’s all I am saying. I am just going by what was stated in the article.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 6:42pmSo the Mexicans can throw Americans in one of their nasty slammers for nothing, but a Mexican who’s snuck into our country and committed serious crimes has to be treated with kid gloves like he’s someone special? About time that Mexicans caught committing the slightest crime in this country get the whole law library thrown at them. Since we don’t want to overcrowd our jails how about a hefty fine that can be paid off in cash or at the rate of $2/day of sentence? Sounds good to me!

I scored high enough on the asvab to have my choice of careers in any branch but chose the Marines to set myself apart. It requires brains to remind yourself he, like all of us, is human. Posted on December 17, 2012 at 11:05pmHow can you say he made a mistake? He cleared US Customs, he declared the weapon. It appears its a case of the length of the barrel; which apparently is a mater of one inch either way, and you know that pretty much depends upon how you measure it. No, the soldier didnt make a misatke, US customes did. Or if they did not, the Mexican Customs are playing a game.
