UPDATED: Here Are the Latest Key Facts Surrounding the Horrific CT School Shooting

(TheBlaze/AP) — Since Friday, a litany of facts have come out surrounding the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As is often the case, the initial details were murky and, as a result, the media originally reported numerous details incorrectly.

It can often be difficult to cut through the chaos that typically accompanies events like what unfolded in Newtown. Considering the plethora of details available, discerning the key facts is important. Below, read what is currently known about the tragic attack that left 28 individuals dead, including 20 children:

THE INVESTIGATION: Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza, was carrying an arsenal of hundreds of rounds of deadly ammunition – enough to kill nearly every student in the school if given enough time, authorities said, raising the specter the bloodbath could have been far worse. Lanza shot himself in the head when he heard police approaching the classroom where he was gunning down helpless children.

Here Are the Key Facts Surrounding the Horrific Newtown Shooting

This 2005 photo provided by neighbor Barbara Frey and verified by Richard Novia, shows Adam Lanza. Authorities have identified Lanza as the gunman who killed his mother at their home and then opened fire Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, inside an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killing 26 people, including 20 children, before killing himself. Novia was the school district’s former head of security and he advised the school technology club that Adam and his older brother belonged to. Credit: AP

He had multiple, high-capacity clips each capable of holding 30 bullets, and the chief medical examiner said the ammunition was the type designed to break up inside a victim’s body and inflict the maximum amount of damage, tearing apart bone and tissue.

The gunman shot his mother four times in the head before going to the school and gunning down 26 victims there.

THE VICTIMS: All the victims at the school were shot multiple times with a high-power rifle, some of them up close. All six adults were women. Of the 20 children, eight were boys and 12 were girls. All the children were 6 or 7 years old.

Here Are the Key Facts Surrounding the Horrific Newtown Shooting

This July 2010 photo provided by the Newtown Bee shows Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Conn. Credit: AP

Among the dead were popular principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach, who rushed toward Lanza in an attempt to stop him and paid with their lives; Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher who died while trying to hide her pupils; 30-year-old Lauren Rousseau, a teacher thrilled to have been hired this year, and Ana Marquez-Greene, a 6-year-old girl who had just moved to Newtown from Canada.

THE GUNMAN: Lanza was described as a bright but painfully awkward student who seemed to have no close friends. In high school, he was active in the technology club. The club adviser remembered that he had “some disabilities” and seemed not to feel pain like the other students. That meant Lanza required special supervision when using soldering tools, for instance. He also had an occasional “episode” in which he seemed to withdraw completely from his surroundings, the adviser said.

Authorities said Lanza had no criminal history, and it was unclear whether he had a job. On Monday, police claimed that the shooter had no connection to the school, based on accounts from education officials.

THE SCENE: Families sought to comfort each other during Sunday church services and vigils devoted to impossible questions like that of a 6-year-old girl who asked her mother: “The little children, are they with the angels?”

Many of Newtown’s 27,000 people wondered whether life could ever return to normal, and, as the workweek was set to begin, parents pondered whether to send their children back to school. Signs around town read, “Hug a teacher today,” “Please pray for Newtown” and “Love will get us through.”

THE SCHOOL: Currently, Sandy Hook’s future hangs in the balance. Newtown officials couldn’t say whether Sandy Hook Elementary, where authorities said all the victims were shot at least twice, would ever reopen. State police Lt. Paul Vance said Monday at a news conference that it could be months before police turn the school back over to the district.

Monday classes were canceled and Newtown’s other schools were to reopen Tuesday. The district was making plans to send surviving Sandy Hook students to a former school building in a neighboring town, but they didn’t say when that would happen.

During a press conference on Monday afternoon, authorities announced that furniture would be moved out of the school and transported to a new location where students will continue their education. Moving trucks were already observed at the school on Monday.

THE PARENTS: One of the parents who lost a child in the attack spoke publicly about his loss.

Robbie Parker fought back tears and struggled to catch his breath as he described his 6-year-old daughter, Emilie, as a little girl who loved to draw. He also reserved surprisingly kind words for the gunman, saying he was not mad and offering sympathy for the gunman’s family.

To the man’s family, he said, “I can’t imagine how hard this experience must be for you.”

THE GUNS: Federal authorities visited local gun ranges but found no evidence that the gunman trained for the attack or was an active member of the recreational gun community.

Investigators also have interviewed gun dealers trying to determine whether there was any training or other behavior that precipitated the attack.

THE HISTORY: The Newtown massacre is the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history and one of the deadliest mass shootings around the world. A gunman at Virginia Tech University killed 33, including himself, in 2007. Only Virginia Tech and the mass killings of 77 in Norway last year had greater death tolls across the world over the past 20 years.

Into the early 1990s, reports of this kind of unprovoked mass murder and suicide used to mention which drug the killer had been using–they were ALWAYS taking some sort of drugs. Then they stopped, because legal “prescription medication” was involved in more mass murders than street drugs were. Lanza fits the pattern for “Prozac Dementia” perfectly. So, what was Lanza taking that caused him to look like a zombie? Prozac, or maybe it was Paxil or Zoloft or some other brand of dementia?

This is what you get Glenn when you hire unemployed journalist from bankrupted Newspapers. What happen to the journalist who actually reported the news and who have been dragged into jail for not giving up their confidential sources?

The Blaze is reporting what is released by police, and witnesses. Underlying rumor, innuendo, and speculation are the purview of MSNBC on one side and Alex Jones on the other. Now given that Glenn is trying to create an actual NEWS organization and not just a conservative slanted propaganda pooper to counter the ******* propaganda from the MSM, then he will not cover the rumor mill in a story labeled “facts”. However I would for one like to know if Lanza’s mother did work for DARPA as has been spred around. Also what connection did she and her son have with the school? What was the altercation Lanza had with the school admin the day(s) before?

Children, Teachers, murdered over this? Ladies and gentlemen, we have a motive and a link. This coincidence is impossible to overlook. Two mass shootings connected to LIBOR. –

The father of Newtown Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza is Peter Lanza who is a VP and Tax Director at GE Financial. The father of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes is Robert Holmes, the lead scientist for the credit score company FICO. Both men were to testify before the US Sentate in the ongoing LIBOR scandal. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other. 16 international banks have been implicated in this ongoing scandal, accused of rigging contracts worth trillions of dollars. HSBC has already been fined $1.9 billion and three of their low level traders arrested.

A QUESTION WITH BOLDNESS: Another significant question is why do the bullets that were found in the school, not match the hand guns that Lanza was found with? They match the rifle that was found in his car? There were also additional men found on the school grounds. Who are they, and why isn’t the media talking about them ??? END OF QUESTION WITH BOLDNESS

EXcuse me…. if they were shot with a RIFLE, then why did he only have handguns?
I smell ‘cover up’ here- and have to assume the obvious: there WAS another shooter.
This story, sad as it is, is becoming even more sad as more information comes out of the M-E/LEO/fuzz and other ‘investigators’. Contradictory all.
And ‘multiple 30 round magazines’… uh-huh… I’m really going to believe that one when he was carrying handguns.

The government wants us to give up our guns for our protection yet they’re ordering 450 million rounds of ammo for internal protection.

If my house is broken into, I may have 30 bullets to protect myself. If the EPA raids my house because of a leaking septic tank, they’ll be carrying automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo.

@encinom The founding fathers gave us the right to keep and bare arms among many other rights and freedoms. Delusional thinking drives people to think they can live in a perfect world to lay themselves and bow to the government for protection. For the beauty of the 2nd amendment it will be there when you need it the most. You want the government to control every aspect of your life do us a favor leave the United States. We do not tolerate fascists, communists, tyrants, or dictators. The strongest army in the world is here in the United States, it is We The People. In World War 2 the Japanese did not dare to try to invade the US because they know there is a gun behind every blade of grass.

Are you off your meds again? One of the first signs of mental instability can be denial.Which is obvious that you are in.You also seem to suffer from a projection complex. Not once did Mr.Johnson say he had an assault rifle. His complaint is that our government is buying up rounds that work in automatic weapons.[Your projection defense is showing grandly]You seem to be in denial that these incidents will be used as an attempt to take away our rights. Its already been tried and failed.
Please get mental help you really do need it.Most hopliphobes can be helped. One of the first things you can do is seperate the difference between an automatic assault rifle and a semi automatic one.
You also might start by realizing most hunters and those keeping guns for protection don’t have automatic assault rifles.
Note I have a theory that most who hate guns and haven’t had a family tradegy concerning one fall into one category. They harm people to the point that the individuals thay have harmed wish to see them dead. Its why they are afraid of guns.If this is the case, remember its just as easy to kill with other weapons, if not easier. Its also much more brutal and barbaric. My advice to you is this, stop harming ,maiming and attempting to kill people, then you wouldn’t need to worry about someone potentially shooting you.
In essence your fear of guns comes from your own actions.Grow up and be a man, instead of the mental midget you project yourself to be.

It is obvious why people say you have no clue, The phrase “well regulated” in the day the constitution meant well equipped. If we had schools properly teaching history in our country you would understand that. Basically the 2nd amendment says we should have a citizen militia that can carry whatever is available at any time in public or on their own property, that would act as the army during invasion, or to defend liberty from tyrants and over reaching government. Another English lesson, “shall not” is an absolute. The world is full of universal laws and absolutes, just because you don’t recognize them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Citizens NEED to own military style weapons because the tyrant can use his militaristic police state to rob you of freedoms. That is why it was the second amendment, they knew we would need it to keep the rest.

The “feel good” educational system forces assimilation into regular classrooms of the “borderline” special ed kids, all the while actually providing them — sometimes in the same classroom — a special ed teacher. These kids inevitably get some sort of being “picked on” and then begins their schooling into the art of being a victim. I would wager a bet that many “true” victims have a flash in their mind of vengeance or revenge, but with the impulse control to stave off any action in that regard.

My personal opinion is that the school systems in our country need to take another look at forced assimilation.

It puzzles me that for forty eight hours the bushmaster was in the car, now suddenly it was the weapon he used.

Rifle rounds, as high velocity projectiles, fragment, so the statement about that seems politically motivated.

As to the question of secured firearms, if he was home and mom was not, he could procure ammo without difficulty… I suspect that will be a path of secondary control Dianne Feinsteinand her ilk follow… It will work about as well as banning the mail order sale of firearms after Kennedy’s assassination.

ALL of these gun laws have done nothing to stem the violence, because they are only chasing the tool, and not what creates and motivates these deviates.

I agree. Very concerning when the public is being mislead on purpose. The AR-15 was found inside the car and 2 – handguns where found inside the school, this was reported by the Stare Police spokesman and other law enforcement officials. Now, things have changed 48 hours later. I have never seen a interview where a medical examiner stood on podium and chatted with media about his findings.

    1. Has anyone talked with the 24-yo brother about….,
    2. What was discussed in the altercation with the school principal, and other adults,
    3. Was the altercation reported to the police on the day it happened,
    4. Why did the shooter target Sandy Hook, is it known that his mother had a problem with Sandy Nook, causing the shooter to go there,
    5. Is it known that his mother was either a teacher, or aide at the school,
    6. Could he have watched one segment of ‘Lonsome Dove,’ the western, over-and-over-again, or the likes, which gave him the idea to murder the children?????

      1. I’m sure they have/ are. It will be a while before you hear any of those details because they may be driving several focal points of an investigation that is far from complete.
      2. & 3. This altercation is a rumor that no news agency has even credited a source to. Most likely it is some of the “misinformation” Trooper Vance has been referring to.
      4. You won’t know this for a while, although he used to be a student there. Judging from childhood and high school photos, his time there may have been the last time he didn’t look like a zombie.
      5. Lonesome Dove? lol. doubt it- though Tom Sellek did used to own a home in Newtown.

      Some questions need answered.
      1. How long was the shooter in the school?
      2. I had heard there was a security person -unarmed- at the school. Where was he?
      3. Why all the sudden is the Bushmaster presented as the murder weapon?
      4. I first heard the shooter went directly to the principal’s office where he argued with, and then shot her. There I heard he went directly to the school nurse’s office but couldn’t find her. She was hiding under the desk. Who is putting out this information?
      5. It is now reported that the shooter was armed with hundreds of rounds of ammo. Ammo weights quite a bit in large amounts. The ammo, plus 2 handguns and a rifle would be quite a load and quite conspicuous. Was the entrance covered by a video camera?
      6. How did the shooter get inside?
Until these and other questions are answered we have no idea of what went on. Look for a cover up as there was no security at this school at all!

When violent shootings take place, honest journalists are forced to ask the question:

“Does this fit the pattern of other staged shootings?”

“Is there a mysterious ‘second suspect’ that disappears from coverage?”

“Is the shooter mentally disabled and under mind control?”

“Did the feds take over the investigation from the local police?” “Was this a false flag?”

    “Who benefits?”

No, he had magazines. And those magazines hold cartridges. Bullets are the small chunk of lead/copper that sit at the front of the cartridge. All hollow point and frangible are meant to break up and cause maximum damage, that’s the whole point of firearms, they are not “huggy squeezy fluffy soft” tools.

“Federal authorities visited local gun ranges but found no evidence that the gunman trained for the attack or was an active member of the recreational gun community.”

Of course he didn’t. He was evil and insane. It doesn’t take a lot of training to shoot unarmed small children, located in buildings where, by law, good guys are forbidden to enter with the means to defend the innocent.

Watching this and other events I’m starting to question whether (most of) society in general is suffering from some kind of psychosis. I’ve never seen so much lack of critical thinking skills, distributed so wide and deep across the nation.

There is no statutory solution to a moral problem.

No legislation can solve the problem we are facing.

The problem is what is in the minds of these people. It would be easy to write them off as insane. While some of these people might be insane, certainly they are not ALL insane. People need to have a moral compass, whether that is based in religion or something else, it needs to be there.

This is a societal problem, not a legal problem.

All these people claiming their brand of legislation will prevent this are selling us a bill of goods. There is no firearms legislation that can prevent this. There is no re-working of the mental health laws that can prevent this. There is no level of security that keep these people away from their intended victims. These things WILL happen. We can take steps to lessen the chances of success, but we can’t prevent them.

Even in the extremely tighly controlled world of prisons, inmates STILL manage to obtain or make weapons, and murders STILL occur, even in prisons.

The short answer is that people will always be killing people, as long as their heart is black. Whether it’s blackened by mental illness or hatred matters not.

Take steps to be able to protect yourself, and after that put your faith in God. Prepare as if it is all up to you, but pray as if it is all up to God. Beyond that, all we can do is accept that we have free will, and this is the darker side of having free will.

Where is the outrage at the real source of the kind of behavior shown by ALL the ‘shooters’? The source? All the TV shows, “game” DVDs, movies etc. that ‘glorify’ bloody gun battles etc. for profit while at the same time the Hollywood elites demand ‘gun control’. This type of visual ‘entertainment’ is TEACHING those of weak minds and souls what and how to get the maximum ‘attention’. Ask any teacher about the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching students and you’ll discover what educators already know. These are very effective as teaching tools. A gun is no more than a tool that can be used for good or evil. A gun cannot jump up and shoot anything without someone grasping it.
Folks, those who have done all these mass shootings have been TAUGHT how and have seen the ‘glory’ through all these vile visual tools. The best offense against this sort of indoctrination is not government intervention but for the parents [BOTH] to take charge and not allow this filth in the house – or in schools. [When, if ever, have YOU attended a school board meeting or city council meeting – and voiced YOUR opinion?] It is pass time to put God back into our families, into our government[s] [local, state & federal] and in OUR country.

I concur, Bayou. I have heard from a reliable (works in the field) source that all these forms/levels of autism directly correlate with the amount of human stimulation babies, toddlers, children in their formative years, receive. Setting a toddler down in front of the TV (while not even knowing what the child is perhaps viewing) so one can free their time up for their own selfish needs is not “human stimulation”.

Put a armed veteran in every school, plus at least one teacher and one janitor with concealed carry.

@half-You are 100% correct. Add that to classroom doors that only open with a key or from the inside and you have done more to stop another incident like this than all of the crap that has been spewed from the mouths of talking heads on the news or our idiot politicians over the weekend. A $70 dollar piece of ballistic glass on classroom door window would help a lot also. But fr the LOVE OF PETE LOCK THE DOORS!!!!

Correction to story–”All ammunition is deadly!” Bombs are deadly, knives are deadly, baseball bats are deadly. Well not really; by themselves these items are harmless. When used by a person wanting to cause harm to somebody else, they become deadly. Not a group of people, and no one thing is to blame for this masacre. One person is to blame; like it or not!

I agree with you about the deadliness of weapons.

However, one person may have pulled the trigger but leftists played a role in their deaths by giving the criminal unfettered access to children when they created their heralded free fire zones for criminals (aka “gun free zones”).

Leftists are awash in the blood of these babies and now are feasting on their corpses by exploiting the tragedy with their calls for gun control.

IMHO the grounds for incorrect information can be attributed to social media.
