Man Attempts to Open Fire on Crowd at Movie Theater, Armed Off-Duty Sergeant Drops Him (UPDATED)

Update: WOAI now reports it was an off-duty sergeant who fired a total of four shots, wounding the shooter. An Initial report by 1200 WOAI news said that an off-duty sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect one time.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says the off-duty sergeant, who was working security, heard the gunshots and came running. She saw the gunman coming out of the men’s restroom. The Sheriff’s Office says the gunman did not shoot at her, but his gun was drawn so she opened fire.
That off-duty sergeant, identified as Lisa Castellano, fired four times, wounding the gunman. Only one other person was wounded, a 49-year-old man inside the theater, who was hit by one of the gunman’s shots. Both are expected to recover.
Investigators say about 30 rounds were fired. It’s unclear why the break-up with his girlfriend caused the man to go after his co-workers. Investigators haven’t ruled out a love-triangle involving someone else at the restaurant.
–
With one shot, an off-duty sergeant took down a gunman who attempted to opened fire at a crowded movie theater lobby during a late night showing of “The Hobbit” in San Antonio, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Police say a gunman, identified as Jesus Manuel Garcia, chased patrons from the nearby China Garden Restaurant into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. Garcia, an employee of the restaurant, reportedly walked in the establishment looking for a woman.
When the woman, also reportedly a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, Garcia pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.
“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.
The commotion sent horrified restaurant patrons into the movie theater lobby, but the gunman followed. He again attempted to open fire, and this time his gun didn’t jam. Garcia reportedly shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.
Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Castellano reportedly chased the gunman toward the back of the theater. The 13-year department veteran cornered him after he ran into a men’s restroom and shot him before taking his gun.
“The officer involved, she took the appropriate action to try to keep everyone safe in the movie theater,” Antu added.
Due to the off-duty sergeant’s bravery, the gunman was not able to make it into the theater where he could have potentially taken many lives.

The gunman and the man he shot were hospitalized, according to WOAI.
Police say a recent breakup set off the man’s shooting spree on Sunday, MySanAntonio.com reports.
Jesus Manuel Garcia, 19, an employee at a China Garden restaurant next to the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 theater, apparently became upset Sunday night after his girlfriend broke up with him.
He lashed out by sending her a message saying he planned to go to the restaurant and “shoot somebody,” said Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Raymond Pollard.
Pollard said the woman called to warn restaurant employees, but by the time she saw his message, Garcia was already outside the China Garden firing a Glock 23 at the front door about 9:25 p.m.
If Garcia survives his attempt at mass murder, officials say he will likely face a charge of attempted capital murder as he allegedly shot at the San Antonia police car on Southwest Military Drive as he ran from the restaurant and into the theater.

There are many reasons of why this is happening, but one of those is the fact that these spoiled brats are raised in a way they can’t face the real life. They can´t handle the failure or the cruel reality because they were “protected” by liberal parents (Brats too) all their lives. They think they deserve everything. They believe they are wonderful and perfect human beings, the world is painted in pink, and rainbows are coming out of their butts….and when they crash against the world, they can´t handle the truth!

Don’t like the idea any more than the next guy, but if it helps your sensitivities, think of it as practice against terrorism al la Beslan.
Our big bad boys have armed security all over the Capitol, why not the kids, the security can coceal carry and still be very effective. Any other plan expands response time, seconds mean lives. The Conn shooter killed how many before the cops arrived…….as compared to this new one stopped cold because an armed trained deputy was right there . It is a no-brainer.

our youngest and most impressionable, yes. but who’s to say they have to know the person is an armed guard? he/she doesn’t have to wear a uniform that clearly identifies that person as THE armed guard. when was the last time you were able to pick out the armed marshal on your last flight? there’s a reason this individual isn’t clearly identified as THE armed guard.
imagine if the principal had been trained and authorized to carry a conceal weapon. how much farther would this incident have gone? have you seen the story about the oregon mall shooting? this shooter was confronted by a conceal carry citizen, this shooters next shot was to take his own life. i contend that because the shooter didn’t plan on or anticipate someone else at the mall with a gun.

Right you are!!!! The lamestream media will never air this story. It will get local coverage but the story would have been aired on the networks unless this lunatic had made it into the theatre and shot 10 or 12 kids, parents and other movie goers. Then the lamestream talking heads would be asking over and over how could this happen? How can a 19 year old get a gun and kill or wound innocent people? Bob Costas would again have a chance to pontificate his leftist agenda on NBC (Nothing But Communism).
You want to stop school killings? Arm school administrators and selected teachers. Have you heard about such school massacres in Israel after a couple of incidents perpetrated by Palestinans a few years ago? NO!! The reason you haven’t heard about such incidents in Israel is that teachers are armed and trained to take out any threats to the school or the children. The terrorists will look for softer targets.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 10:20amIf the intent of this story is to infer that individuals other than the police should carry hand guns so that incidents like this will be prevented or limited it is not convincing. First, Texas is a concealed carry state and therefor the shooter did not know who might be carrying a weapon…. hence the possibility that people might be carrying concealed weapons was not a deterrent. Second, the last thing we need is 10 individuals to pull out their concealed weapon and fire shots in a crowded movie theater lobby. Everyone had guns in the wild west and it was not a safer time.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 11:06am@BS you cannot compare this to Sandy Hook. That is the point here. Maybe I need to spell it out for you. This story headline is false.
“MAN ATTEMPTS TO OPEN FIRE ON CROWD AT MOVIE THEATER, ARMED OFF-DUTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY DROPS HIM WITH ONE BULLET”
Go read the full story. It is headlines like these that sensationalize a domestic dispute or workplace violence. upset worker chases co-worker out of place of employment, co-worker seeks safety by running to theater – upset worker shoots co-worker one time in back as he enters theater lobby – off-duty officer working detail chases upset worker into bathroom and shoots him several times. end of story.
The headline makes this story sound like a lone gunman on par with the colorado theater shooting – pull out a gun on a crowd of movie goers as they waited in line to see hobbit and a off-duty officer shot him before he could attempt to open fire on the crowd.
do you see the difference?

That is to say…a person brandishes a weapon with the intent to commit harm on others..and someone who is also armed and properly trained with a weapon, brings down that assailant thus preventing another massacre. Simple isn’t it? But apparently lefties can’t get their minds around this kind of uncomplicated simplicity.

And though this gentleman was not deterred from his actions by the idea that others may be carrying, you cannot state that it is an ineffective deterrent as the result would be inaction and thus unobservable. A sudden shift from a gun free world to armed military every three feet would be terrifying for a child (or an adult really) But there is nothing scary about being around security. Children see police officers all the time, children of military families, hunters etc grow up being exposed to responsible gun ownership. Guns are not inherently scary, nor are armed adults. Why would this be difficult or send a bad message to children? What message does it send if we leave our children unprotected?

Trigus: Your statement that the man chased his co-worker into the theater is incorrect. The girl he was looking for was not at work which angered him more then he chased several co-workers into the theater. The officer was correct in chasing him into an area void of people to save their lives. He still had his gun when she (the off duty officer) shot him.

Bottom line up front: A bad man with a gun, in a movie theater, shooting innocent people was not stopped by “gun free zone” signs. He was stopped when a citizen with a concealed firearm put the font sight post on his chest, and pulled the trigger, neutralizing the threat.

“Jesus” (gee-zus) is the English pronunciation of the German transliteration Jesus (Yay-sus) of the Greek name Iesous (hyay-sus) that is the transliteration of the Hebrew name Yeshua (Yah-Shew-ah) that is transliterated in the English Old Testament as Joshua.
The Greek pronunciation and the modern Spanish pronunciation are virtually indistinguishable. It is the same name.
“Jesus” is a transliteration, occurring in a number of languages and based on the Latin Iesus, of the Greek Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs), itself a hellenization of the Aramaic/Hebrew ישוע (Yēšûă‘) which is a post-Exilic modification of the Hebrew יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yĕhōšuă‘, Joshua) under influence from Aramaic.”

I grew up in suburban America throughout the late 80′s into the 90′s in the 90′s they started under the Dare program to put on duty officers and Drug dogs on campus in the JR high, and High school, in elementary the police regularly stopped by the front office while on patrol. I actually made friends with some officers and used to go to the courthouse and police station in my city at the age of 8 or so, that had to do somewhat with a bike that I was hoping to recover. I found cool things like the city master plan for bike paths, it was awesome I found trails that went for miles, yeah and they weren’t linked to agenda 21 or any BS, it kept my friend and I busy exploring 20 miles or more from home, if we got tired we called from a restaurant for a ride home. Liberals say we should have died? No cell phones or trackers, and being so far from our community we were up to not good? I met a lot of cool people and ya know an 18 speed off road keeps you far away from the crazy child molesters, and psychotic bullies. As a kid I was never worried about getting into trouble with the cops so much as I was worried and regularly escaped from drug dealers, criminals, and psychopathic gang oriented bullies. I remember bounding over 10 ft fences, and flying over creeks and impossible jumps in escape from the nutcases who had claimed this or that territory, eventually the police got them all, now it’s much safer then it ever was; Although Mexican cartels are the new issue out

The story clearly says he was employed at the restaurant, But it never said a word about her being employed there. It also clearly states that his message to her stated that he was going to “SHOOT SOMEBODY” he never said she was the main reason he went there to do the shooting. If she did work there I’m sure he would have known her schedule and shown up when she was working. Also, if she was the main goal why did he chase the people to the movie theater. He was just out to kill whomever he could and most likely as many as he could.

Well, with a LOT OF HELP FROM A VERY COURAGEOUS AND HIGHLY TRAINED WOMAN! She even had to chase the coward into the Men’s room, as if THAT was going to do him any good! Once again, a GUN STOPPED THE EVENT, a gun HANDLED BY A COMPETENT Markswoman! Shades of Ft. Hood! (Perp also stopped by a female-operated gun!) Once again, please note that the teachers at the elementary school in Connecticut ALL displayed tremendous courage and resourcefullness, under extreme duress, any one of whom WOULD HAVE DROPPED THE ASSAILANT in a heartbeat, were they properly armed and trained!!! I’d bet they would have chased him into the ‘little boy’s room’ before taking him out, as he surely would have been surprised by their response and had nowhere else to go!

More people die in auto accidents than gun-related deaths…. so using the same skewed logic of liberals, we should ban ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, and other automobiles as well to save lives.

Rather, better cars with lots of safety systems are the coup de jour! The press doesn’t even fuss about better driver training! But if the weapon of choice is a gun and not an automobile, woe be it! Better guns, guns that can only be fired by their owners, guns that are more accurate, bullets that stop their target (and stop in their target), bullets that don’t ricochet, etc. should be the coup de jour for the gun industry, rather than be treated like a deodorant, ‘Ban’!

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 11:21pmI have been repeatedly saying this to people. Trying to explain to these emotional maniacs that more children have been killed by drunk drivers in the year than all the massacres combined. More children have been killed by automobiles in the past month, than all the massacres combined. I see all these Mother’s posting how afraid they are to send little Johny to school when the reality is, their child is something like 50 times more likely to be killed by an automobile than be killed in a school shooting. As a matter of fact, their child is something like 10 times more likely to commit suicide than to be shot in a school shooting. It is life, if there was no possibly of seizing to exist, life would have no meaning. Apparently, as those who prescribe to purely knowledge, are in denial of the fact that they will one day die. Faith vs. Fear, Wisdom vs Knowledge, this is where our world as come to. Just as Eve partook of the fruit from the tree of knowledge, to be like God, know good and bad, so had most of society. God was run out of school so that knowledge could take it’s full effect, instinctual animalistic fear driven lives masked in meaningless man created purposes for life. Those of us who prescribe to faith, understand our existence does not end here, so we are able to step beyond the grasp of this instinct to survive, understanding our purpose is one far greater than just being a mortal.I should have been dead on more than one occasion, but I am not. Why, I don’t know

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 12:40amAnd while we’re talking about banning cars, let’s all get together and set up an illegal car importing syndicate–thats exactly what happens when you ban something, right? We banned drugs, and that made them so incrediby profitable that now the mob and the government are all getting rich importing and selling them illegally, and they’re as readily available oin the streets as ever. So it would be with guns–even if you were to ban them, they would be as easily available to the bad guys as ever, and the honest people would be defenseless. That’s why the violent crime rate skyrockets everyplace where guns are banned–even Australia and Europe.
Let me put it bluntly: If you advocate taking guns from the citizenry, you are facilitating the deaths of thousands of innocent people whom you would leave unable to defend themselves against armed and emboldened criminals.

Ilove all of you gun rights advocates, but you’re falling into the trap. I agree that a person should learn how to handle a weapon, but it should be buy choice. You shouldn’t have to get a license from a gov. agent that you may have to defend yourself against in the future. You all have to stop tip toeing around the reason for the 2nd amendment. It’s there to protect yourself from a tyrannical gov. It is recognized as the supreme law of the land by all 50 state constitutions. that’s why they are known as the United States of America. The Constitution is the one thing they are united on. The right to bare arms shall not be infringed. I’m sorry, but getting permission is an infringement. Especially when you’re asking permission from some BOZO that most likely got certified by some other BOZO. I mean seriously, folks come on!!! This is all just as ridiculous as, say, the lie that driving is a privilege, not a right. Well, the gov. didn’t invent the car, a citizen did. As long as I don’t injure anyone with it, I have the right to use it. Of course, I realize that we no longer live in a Constitutional Republic, so these principals no longer apply. Easier said, you no longer have the RIGHT to bare arms, you have permission. Two completely different things.

I call BS on this claim. Name me one state that has any such law or policy. As a matter of internal policy there may be certain specific situations in which officers are forbidden to carry a weapon, like in a bar, but there is no state that has a blanket ban on off duty police carrying. In fact it is a matter of federal law since 2004 that all off duty police officers are allowed to carry when visiting any other states, not just in their own.

I don’t know about the US, but Britain does not allow off duty cops to carry. So your claim that no gun grabbers want to take guns from cops is patently false. Further, after an off duty cop stopped a machete wielding maniac in New York, that worthy city council discussed banning cops from carrying off duty. Again, your statement that no one wants to take guns from off duty cops is patently and completely false.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 10:55pmWeapons don’t kill people with the exception of one! Guns don”t fire them selves, knives don’t stab people, IED’s etc etc. There are many kinds of weapons that can and do kill people with the aid of the HUMAN hand with a certain mind set.
Yes, the HUMAN HAND WEAPON is the one that kills because it has a brain and the ability to think. It can strangle and mame anyone at will. it doesn’t need a secondary weapon to kill but most often chooses a secondary weapon because it makes the job easier and faster.. The Human Hand Weapon usually starts out with the mental process which first uses the Verbal weapons and the hand weapons and then escalates to other weapons of CHOICE.
So unless we can find a reasonable way to cure humanity of its sick and twisted ways no amount of gun control will cure society!
The Ten Commandments would be a great cure!

I don’t even recognize this country anymore from the one I grew up in – the rot that had been going on slowing, secretly, relentlessly has finally become so pervasive – nothing is sacred or worth honor anymore. The left hates what made this country great and wants to rot and corrupt everything decent and that agenda is now in charge of all our institutions and this is its fruit.
The breakdown of society in general is by design to take down a Judeo/Christian country from within to make the country so corrupt it stinks and drive us in a direction designed to destroy us. There is a deep cancer rotting us and there is no area this has not touched thanks to Fabians, Frankfurt School, Antonio Gramsci, Mattechine Society and Committee’s of Correspondence, Alinkski and his ilk – all the way to Obama.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 11:03pmRIGHTWINGHATEMACHINE – I guess you are having fun with your far right winger bashing. I find it funny. If there is anything going on its an extreme left wing conspiracy of the media in bed with this administration and all the indoctrinated little sheeple. So, spew on and entertain us with your dribble.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 12:12amI am awaiting the return of ELIASIUM, the religious babble troll or the one named JUSTTIM . Or were they also same troll ??! Just gets confusing trying to keep up with their ” re-appearances .” But you can always spot the lingo and the themes they parrot from Command Central ! Like Monger : our angry , young, radical, male figure !
