“Fox & Friends” host Gretchen Carlson was moved to tears on Monday during a discussion about the nation’s moral fabric and the tragic school shooting that unfolded in Connecticut. While speaking about these subjects with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Carlson became emotional, especially when describing the importance of faith in the midst of tragedy.
Throughout the exchange, Huckabee lamented the fact that the nation has drifted from its Judeo-Christian past. Rather than invoking God daily, he noted that it is usually following tragedy that people begin thinking about a higher power.
“I’m not suggesting by any stretch that if we had prayer in schools regularly as we once did that this wouldn’t have happened,” Huckabee said during the interview. “But, we’ve created an atmosphere in this country where they only time you want to invoke God’s name is after the tragedy.”
Rather than embracing morality exclusively following horrific tragedy or personal pain, the former governor and Fox News host made it known that he believes people should consider these themes more regularly. Carlson responded to his comments with raw emotion.
“Yesterday at our church, Governor, it was so moving,” she explained. “It was so wonderful to know that if you are a person of faith, you have a lot of questions why, but you have something to hold onto.”
Huckabee said that he believes that Americans need to quit apologizing for their faith and “quit being ashamed that we believe in God.”

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:58pmI think that what happened to these people was an absolute tragedy. We need to pray for the families of those who lost a loved one. No amount of gun control will stop this kind of thing from happening in the future. If the people had the right to carry, it definitely would make the criminal stop and think about being stopped (or killed) by an armed citizen before he could carry out his crime. The criminal will still get his weapons regardless of gun control. We need to pray that this country will get back to putting God and Jesus first in all that we do (especially in the Government) because it certainly is not there now.

There is that whole religion separate from government thing, you know. I for one don’t Jesus or God in anything I do in government no more than I do Muhammad or Allah. Do you get that? Do you understand that government is not the place for religion. BTW has anyone checked the religious standing of mother and son here. They were Christian. I guess they did not have the direct line to Jesus though..

Dec. 17, 2012 at 2:58pmGod doesn’t make a crazy person sane. It just makes them an evangelical or an Islamist.
“By maintaining the separation of church and state the United States has avoided the intolerance which has so divided the rest of the world with religious wars… Can any of us refute the wisdom of Madison and the other framers? Can anyone look at the carnage in Iran, the bloodshed in Northern Ireland, or the bombs bursting in Lebanon and yet question the dangers of injecting religious issues into the affairs of state? The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives… We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we mustn’t stop now. To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.” — Barry Goldwater,1981

Dec. 17, 2012 at 3:09pmWhat the gov said is right.
In my lifetime, there has been a concerted effort to remove our society from Divine influence with the belief that we can regulate, legsilate and so forth without an adherance to a firm and fast definition of right and wrong based on Biblical principles. Removing prayer form school; removing the Ten Commandments from government buildings; removing any acknowledgement of Christmas from the public venue; all these things and more tells society at large we don’t need God.
The problem with that is without that defining line, the boundaries are constantly changed. Man can not have a properly functioning society if those boundaries constantly move. More could be said, but this has to be the starting point of the conversation.

Do what helps you to heal and gain some strength from this tragedy. However no amount of prayer is going to stop these massacres. Access to guns in this country is a joke. Just because it is a right does not mean that it cant be regulated and recorded more thoroughly. Gun control may not solve the problem but restricted access and punishments for improper storage can help curb this kind of thing from occurring as frequently.

And it happened 7 days after Pearl Harbor where 2,403 people were killed…which has absolutely nothing to do with Sandy Hook “occurrences” not anything else. Why don’t you divide the number of bullets fired in WWII, divide that by 2,194 days, and multiply the result by 2,735. Then take the square root of that result and see at what degree angle would you have to shoot a Japanese Zero out of the air when it’s flying at 244 miles/hr, 1,562 ft altitude, with the wind blowing northeast at 13 mph? Go back to your room full of newspaper clippings, with certain words highlighted, everything connected with string and get that answer on my desk by 5pm.

So God must stop tragedies like this otherwise he is sick and twisted? I think God lets things happen from time to time to test our faith, something atheists will never understand. Besides, what makes you think that a human brain can understand the big picture compared to the mind of God? I love logic and making inferences but there has to be a point where logic only goes so far and faith has to be exercised to bridge the gap. Do not be so close minded.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 5:17pmTotally. And when Jesus said to turn the other cheek, he clearly meant, “shoot him”. And when God said ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill” he didn’t mean in cases of death penalty, war or self defense- you gotta read the fine print, right? Wrong- no fine print on those messages or the other lessons that Christ gave to humanity.
The problem is that Christians don’t really follow Jesus. They like the cross and the other imagery, they like going to church, and they like being able to tell others that they are Christians. But they don’t know Jesus and they have decided to ignore MASSIVE parts of his message.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 5:57pm@foxholeatheist,
I agree with you on the point that I’m either right or I’m delusional. Faith is believing in things hoped for that are true. Christians abhor murder and do not love violence of any kind. But these things happen because there must be opposition in all things. Life is a test, a trial of our faith, enduring our trials and afflictions until the end. We do not presume that we know with absolute certainty that these children are in Heaven, but we, by faith and the holy spirit, have reason to believe that these children are with God. Faith is an action that must be exercised daily to grow.
If you really are searching for answers about life, then get on your knees and pray to God to soften your heart and ask Him for guidance and understanding. And if you are sincere, then you should feel a peaceful feeling come over you. That’s exercising faith. Try it. What do you have to lose? I would think that all “free thinkers” would be open to prayer since they want the truth. So, give it a shot, and don’t demand answers but be humble and ask for answers.

One of the first things I learned, when in navy boot camp, was: “if you don’t believe in God (christian, jewish, or other) you should.” Those with a belief system chances of survival are greatly enhanced, a statisical fact. This wasn’t some passing comment, it was a formal recommendation made by an hardened navy instructor. Apparently it does sometimes work. Well according the the U.S Navy. Though not always full proof, and for obvious reason, I’ve seen it in my own life, but don’t take my word for it.
As for ‘redschiztu’ who says: “get a life,” I watch fox read articles on the Blaze all the time, and I have a wonderful life. You shouldn’t be affraid to become properly informed. Mathew 7:7 states clearly on how to find your proof…”Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
All you Atheists are the same. You want to counter what Christians know 2 be true, without having done a damn thing to invest any effort into testing the clearly stated method.
It would be the same as scientists resolving to their opinions as being fact, without ever having studied the subject matter, or methodically tested your theories. Your arguments are NULL and VOID from the beginning. In what reality are you given the right to argue against the validity of something from such an ignorant standpoint?
Se problem is Foxhole, i used to be just like you. Until i got off my lazy @$$ and tested the theory. Needless to say it took allot of effort (As with any successful scientific breakthrough), but I found my proof. DOA, your ill equipped 2 argue anything…Knowledge is power

Dec. 18, 2012 at 10:06amMuch “wisdom” spouted in combination with much mockery and spiteful wording from some here in this thread, passing judgment on things they know nothing or very little about. It is a sad commentary on the whole of human nature and “reason”. Not taking the time to critical think through their embittered beliefs towards God or his existence. Not that they will listen to me either (of this I am well aware), but to answer a fool according to their folly, God may be as obligated to not intervene as much as you believe he would be obligated to intervene. If God, who has created man a free moral agent, intervened with this tragedy then he would be obligated to intervene with others, and if those tragedies why not “less” evils? And if those evils why not all evils? to the point that he would have no choice but to destroy all of us to prevent the evil he knows we will all do. So when we evaluate from an intellectually honest place that we may not have all committed physical murder, but we have all hated and harmed others in one way or another. It is the grace of God to not destroy us when we commit evil. The greatest evil was the murder of his sinless son, yet he did not stop it. In fact, it was his desire to allow it that we might receive redemption and forgiveness. His ways are much higher than ours. Of course the arrogance of man has always assaulted the character of God (and will continue to do so), there is nothing new under the sun. Thank you..

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:52pmWe will soon see the arrival of the year of our Lord- 2013.
Should we fear the coming of the “Terrible Day of the Lord”?
The answer is NO!
Should We fear the Lord?
The answer is YES! The only fear that we should have in this life is that of the Lord.
Why?
Proverbs 1:7-33
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Before you read the rest of these Scriptures – You must realize in your heart that God is not responsible for the slaying of the innocent children in Newtown. Every person on the face of this earth has “Free Will; This world is a world of Twos” – Choose good or evil. The killer chose evil.
God instructions to humankind-
“Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my Spirit unto you, I will make known my Words unto you.
Because I have called and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand and no man regardeth;
But ye have set at nought all of my counsel, and would none of my reproof.
For that they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord.
They would none of my counsel: They despised all of my reproof.
Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
But those whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
The 20 little innocents shall dwell with Jesus in the House of the Lord, forever.

By the way, the only way you can take that next breath is because God allows it. He does not have to.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 2:13pmThe Bible doesn’t say you go to Heaven or Hell when you die. That idea was taken from Pagan religions. The Bible says that Heaven is where God lives, and the word “Hell” in our translated versions had several words that had different meanings in the original language. It essentially, is the ground. When you die, you are dead and buried. The promise, and the “good news”, is that someday Jesus will come back make the new Jerusalem and reign. Those who followed Jesus’ teachings will get to be a part of that. Those who didn’t, will have second death and just cease to exist.

Wow… just wow. You are wrong on so many levels.
“To be absent with the body to be present with the Lord”
The rich man in Luke chp 16 story of Lazarus. After the rich man died, Jesus said, “he lift up his eyes being in torments”
I could go on and on and on…. You might want to actually read the Bible before posting what you think it does and don’t say.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 6:10pmWell said, squid. Stephen, You really need to read the Bible. Scripture talks about hell being the absents of God. Also it says eternal gnashing of teeth. The disciples misunderstood Jesus when He said He was going to establish a kingdom. They thought he was going to establish one here on earth. They were very disappointed when he was killed. I don’t think it really sunk in until after Jesus went back to heaven. I think you are making the same mistake.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:26pmAfter several of his responses about this tragedy, I cannot find myself looking at Huckabee with anything but disgust. “Oh, I didn’t mean stopping daily prayer caused this… but that’s totally what I keep saying…”
“… it’s far more than just taking prayer or Bible reading out of the schools. It’s the fact that people sue a city so we aren’t confronted with a manger scene or a Christmas Carol. That lawsuits are filed to remove a cross that’s a memorial to fallen soldiers. Churches and Christian-owned businesses are told to surrender their values under the edict of government orders to provide tax-funded abortion pills. We carefully and intentionally stop saying things are sinful and we call them disorders. Sometimes, he even say they’re normal. And to get to where… we have to abandon bedrock moral truths, then [we] ask, “Well, where was God?” And I respond that, as I see it, we’ve escorted Him right out of our culture and we’ve marched Him off the public square, and then we express our surprise that a culture without Hm actually reflects what it’s become.”
THAT is why Huckabee thinks this shooting was justified. Because an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving God wants to see kids killed and refuses to intervene because we have a separation of church and state and don’t see it as the government’s place to force religion upon its citizens.
Seriously, the man is filth and using dead children to get into the spotlight.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:47pmGov. Huckabee didn’t say the shooting was justified by taking prayer out of schools or God out of the public square. Something like this shooting can never be justified! He was merely saying that when you stop teaching moral absolutes, some people lose they’re way. They can’t tell right from wrong any more, because we aren’t teaching it. Today’s kids are taught that truth is subjective. That something is right because it’s legal and it’s legal because that’s what the majority wants. But legal isn’t moral (i.e., right) In Nazi Germany it was legal to kill millions of Jews, handicapped, impaired, or otherwise undesirable people. But, it still wasn’t right. We must teach the difference between right and wrong and it doesn’t come from the legislature; it comes from God.

Did… did you even read the quote of his I posted? No, he said things happen BECAUSE of the things he listed (several of which were lies, I might add).
“He was merely saying that when you stop teaching moral absolutes, some people lose they’re way. They can’t tell right from wrong any more, because we aren’t teaching it.”
And even when you teach moral absolutes, people do terrible things. This is simply the most recent horrific event, but there have been school shootings all throughout the history of the US. The simple fact is, as much as Huckabee is trying to blame this on “taking God out of the public square,” (his own words!) eventually you’ll just have some bad eggs who go off the deep end. There’s no deeper meaning to it. There’s no ultimate lesson to be learned. There’s no preventing every atrocity. These things will happen, and forcing religious beliefs upon people will not stop them.
Neither will the government banning guns.
And neither will Huckabee lying to get people morally outraged and get himself in the spotlight more often.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 2:01pmWow… You’re so off the mark on the what is being discussed. He’s saying that God has become a “no-no” topic on our country. We can’t talk about Christianity, we can’t include it into any political discussion, we can’t allow our kids to see or hear it… If we raise generation after generation in homes and public systems that give no moral compass then why should we complain when thing like this happen? According to Mr. Lanza this could have been completely okay thing to do. How can we expect our children to look forward to the future if we teach them there’s no future to look forward to? Even if we teach them, “Maybe there’s a God and maybe there’s not.” we leave it up to chance of whether a child finds values or not.
Obviously we all have the freedom to choose in this country whether to believe in God or not. However that doesn’t mean we get to choose whether there are consequences or not. I can confidently say that there is a God. He knows and loves each one of us individually. He created us and brought us to this earth for a reason. He’s shown us how we can remember He exists and how we can know why we’re hear. He’s given us the freedom to choose good or evil. He’s told us the consequences of both and they’re not consequences He’s created just because. He’s merely teaching us the truth of how and why the universe works. One choice leads to one consequence, while another leads to another. God didn’t “allow” these children to die.

“If we raise generation after generation in homes and public systems that give no moral compass then why should we complain when thing like this happen?”
These. Things. Happened. Throughout. History.
They are nothing new. Obviously forcing religious beliefs upon someone didn’t stop them from happening before. Why would it start working now?
Do you know why Rome started persecuting Christians heavily as enemies were knocking at their doors? Because they blamed the lack of belief in their national gods as the reason for their empire’s demise, and sought to take out Christians who refused to believe. Ironically, this is one step from what Huckabee is saying. History repeats itself and some of our fellow Christians are acting like the Roman pagans.
“According to Mr. Lanza this could have been completely okay thing to do.”
Where did you decide this? A much more logical answer is that he knew it was a “bad” thing to do, but just didn’t care. Or thought the notoriety would be worth it.
“How can we expect our children to look forward to the future if we teach them there’s no future to look forward to?”
Do only Christian parents teach their kids there is a future worth looking forward to? (Hint: OF COURSE NOT). Don’t throw up strawman arguments willy-nilly.
“God didn’t “allow” these children to die. ”
According to Huckabee, though, they wouldn’t have if we had mangers on government land and forced the Bible to be taught. BS

Read what he said. Seriously, read it. He said that these things happen because school teachers don’t lead prayer in class. Because the government has a separation of church and state. Because Nativity scenes can only be placed on private property OR must share the public sphere.
That, says Huckabee, is why these killings happen. It’s our own fault.

Let me put this a different way. I say you need to put a sign in your front yard. If you don’t, then it’s your fault that 20 children will die. Oh, you didn’t put up the sign like I told you to? Those children got what they deserved and it’s all because you didn’t listen to me.
It fails on two fronts: 1) One is not related to the other. 2) Even when everyone puts signs in their yard, these things still happen because – see point one.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:24pmAdam Lanza, like the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting needs to be put in context. He was a kid with a mental illness. He was from a broken home. He had access to loaded weaponry. This situation was a ticking time bomb. We need to keep this shooter and shooting in context. We have kids with unresolved grief, anger and loss from their parents divorce. Kids from broken homes are far more likely to “act out” aggressive behavior because they are angry over the broken home. Add in mental illness and loaded weaponry and you have the trifecta of evil. There are many more kids like this in America. We feed our kids HOllywood violence, TV. Movies, Video Games, World of Warcraft, violent lyrics from music songs and videos and we wonder why they “act out” this violence? I don’t wonder. I fully expect it and I fully expect it to continue to escalate. We make kids go through fire and earthquake drills yet we feed them with a daily dose of violence and we don’t expect someone to shoot up schools? We are living in la la land in this country. This shooting is a reflection of a society gorging on violence and lacking the basic common sense to deter the violence it feeds on and promotes. Huge disconnect!

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:34pmI am not sure I understand the point you are trying to make. As someone in the health field what you say is a given. As a society we have failed. There is no respect, just give me, give me, give me. Not only that, but, we are on our second or third generation of individuals with significant drug issues and absolutely no parenting skills. Some children’s only relief is in the time spent at school where they are fed and cared for and we are failing there as well. I watched a 5 year old fall on the playground with a bloody hand the monitor was not allowed to give him a hug and tell him it would be okay. Do people realize what happens when you fail to hug a child with an injury? Ask Freud he certainly knew. Government intervention is not always the answers yet it can certainly help with the right direction and the right policy. Unfortunately we are seeing years of failed policy, entitlements and poor accountability. If government officials do not hold themselves accountable and hide behind “Lie and Deny” why would anyone follow. These are supposed to be leaders they are anything but that. It is sad and it will come full circle. History repeats itself.

“Unbelievable.”
Actually, YOU just made an interesting point. Murders have happened for thousands of years. Are you saying it’s the fault of the Bible?
“The Bible has been around for 1000′s of years, and guns for centuries. I don’t recall all the massive school shootings back then”
Then you’re not looking at history. You think the murder of children is something new? Your lack of knowledge should not be mistaken for these things not happening.
“but these tragedies are happening more frequently nowadays”
False. You -hear- about them more these days. The deadliest school shooting in the US was in the 1920s. Again: try learning history.
“while kids line up for blocks to get the latest Halo version or Warcraft or the old Doom with simulated gun violence and murder. ”
Warcraft is not a first-person shooter. Halo involves killing aliens. Doom involves killing demons (and Hitler, if I remember correctly).
You completely missed my point, by the way. In no way did I say that the Bible is the cause for this. What I said is, just because something is prolific and violent (like the Bible), doesn’t mean that it causes massacres. I’m sorry you needed it spelled out for you.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:22pmLet’s give Mike Huckabee a big “AMEN!”
The Christian community has allowed the evil atheist poison to erode our society. We don’t blink an eye when we have trash on t.v. instead of good shows anymore. We say it isn’t our business when a U.S. President has sex in the Oval Office and we allow him to stay even though he took advantage of a young woman. We’re not demanding any morals when that leader decides to redefine what “is” is. Polticians get bribed, stuff money in their pockets by K Street, allow unions to dictate law and somehow all get re-elected!
And we allow our young to listen to filth by calling it music by rappers who degrade whites, hispanics and women. We continue to watch late night talk show hosts that insult conservative women polticians.
We don’t get upset when a Christmas manger scene or a Christmas play is overrided by a small group of atheists that really ruins it for everyone. We’re FAR more concerned with women having the “right” to get an abortion and calling it “woman’s rights”, yet cry foul when gov’t. who has to pay for it demands that she gets an ultrasound to remind her that she has another human being inside her.
And last, we re-elect a person who admits that he went to a church for 20 yrs that said 9/11 was our fault and we deserved it. A President that lies about gun smuggling to mexican cartels. A President who accuses his opponent of being responsible for someone’s death with no shred of evidence.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:07pmIn Luke Chapter 24 I believe around verse 44 or so, The Risen Jesus is speaking with his disciples before he ascends. He says that these things which were spoken of by the prophets must come to pass. What are “these things”. Well the Bible spells them out. There are many, but to mention a few. People will have lost there natural affection, they will be lovers of themselves etc. What we are seeing in America is a nation that has rejected God and His Son Jesus Christ. I believe that when the tragedy that occurred Jesus was right there in that school receiving the children unto Himself. As they closed there eyes in this world, Christ was embracing them in the the next. We also have to be easy on the politicians. Because thats all they are. God said that it is up to you and you alone to be salt and light in a lost and dying world. He was speaking to the Church. Not politicians. Not talk show hosts. You and I who call ourselves Sons of God. I’m not pushing anything on anyone. It’s my job as a Christ follower to lead others to Christ. It’s His Job to lead them to salvation.

The ‘gubmint’ cannot control that which it did not create. – getting a ‘PASS’ or ‘complying’ simply because a body politic has made a ‘law’ doesn’t obsolve the individual from being CIVIL. — some ‘are’ simply ‘deranged,’ — doesn’t excuse it — justify it etc — that is observable on the PHYSICAL/mental level – do the RIGHT thing – even IF it goes against ‘mandates…’ :-) I believe that’s what MLK, Gandhi, Mother Theresa etc were about… Opinions vary. Dec. 17, 2012 at 1:15pmIN Adam Lanza we saw a trifecta of potential violence: broken home, mental illness, access to loaded weaponry. All of this together is a recipe for violence. We saw the same thing in Aurora, Colorado. ADam Lanza had an argument two days prior at Sandy Hook with school staff of administrators. There were plenty of warning signs but people either don’t know the warning signs well enough or chose to ignore them. There have been 30 school shootings since Columbine. It is time to get serious about protecting our schools. We have fire and earthquake drills. It is now time to ACt to protect our schools. They are potential places of violence. I went to school in the 70s and violence erupted all the time. WE have a culture of violence where our children feed on violent Tv, MOvies, Video Games, World of Warcraft and we have stupid parents with their weapons loaded and not locked up. We have kids from broken homes with unresolved anger, grief and loss. Adam Lanza had the Trifecta. He was a ticking time bomb as are others in our society. Time to wake up.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 2:22pmReality is, non-believers opinions don’t matter. It’s high time folk like yourselves realize that faith is a personal relationship and it has no bearing on what anyone else does with their life.
Kind of like having a spouse. You don’t share your spouse unless you’re a swinger and simply don’t mind being the cuckold.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 2:44pmApplebite- very few people believe in nothing. But they are concerned that their lack of beliefs (which is a belief in itself) be honored by the believers. Hence, your manger comment. How is a manger actually offending anyone. In fact, the crucible is exactly what Christmas is and not all of the hyped up shopping Not only that, it is not the most important Christian day. You are right, faith is a personal relationship with our God. So is the belief that none of this matters. So is being gay, and so on and so on. The difference is it brings us together as a community of individuals with common goals. To be a better person. What the individuals are commenting on, on this website is exactly that. You example of swingers I imagine would not really cross the mind as an example on this website. Hence again, your private right – hopefully children are not involved.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 12:46pmI hold faith in God and Jesus completely, and declare them by the testimony of them in my life and by my life. I am not perfect, yet they have allowed me to find the way by Jesus to overcome so much that has been a negative in my life.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 5:32pmGood for you but don’t believe for a second that everyone that doesn’t share your faith is a bad person. Take me for example.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 12:43pmAbsolutely agree. God is patient and full of mercy but time is running out for America. People like Odumbo have an outward appearance of being Godly but inside they are ravenous wolves seeking to devour anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord.

Dec. 17, 2012 at 12:57pmThis a tragedy and have such sympathy for these people
and I hope this will happen never again!
That said I’m more afraid of the possibilities of
Obama style governance than the chances of things
like this! This is shunned by the masses…
Obama socialism is embraced!!…which like
Other regimes mixer millions.
of governance than an event

Dec. 17, 2012 at 6:04pmThe democrats voted against God three times on the convention floor. Most people have forgotten it or thought it not that significant. His favor has been lifted from this country in so many ways.
