Report: NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel Missing in Syria

Report: NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engle Missing in Syria

(Photo: Twitter/@RichardEngel)

Social media outlets are abuzz with the news that NBC chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has been missing in Syria since last Thursday.

Turkish media first published the report, but NBC is staying silent and everyone is hoping it is an unsubstantiated rumor.

Gawker summarizes what is known so far:

NBC News has been asking every reporter who inquires about the report to participate in a news blackout. It has also taken to Twitter and asked people who repeated the Turkish reports there to take them down. You can see here a screengrab of the Twitter account @NBCComm asking a Twitter user who had mentioned the reports to urgently call a cell phone number (that account has since been taken down).

NBC News declined to comment for the record about Engel’s whereabouts, but asked Gawker not to report what it characterized as “rumors” about Engel’s current status.

The Turkish reports have been referenced on Twitter by Slate’s David Weigel, Michelle Malkin, former MSNBC anchor David Shuster, and hundreds of others.

Chinese newswire Xinhua, Daily Kos, and Breitbart.com have also both repeated the Turkish reports.  [Emphasis added]

Even some of those reports are starting to come down, though.  What was once a related Daily Kos article now shows an “Error!” sign, saying the entry has been deleted.

When journalists have gone missing in the past, news agencies have attempted to keep the issue quiet for the journalists’ safety, and to give the potential captors as little leverage as possible.

National security correspondent for The Nation Jeremy Scahill is arguing on Twitter for people to respect the media blackout, Business Insider notes.

“When the family/employer of a missing journalist asks media to do a blackout, that should be respected,” he wrote.

Scahill later added: “There are processes going on that other media are not privy to and you should respect that. It could mean life/death for the missing journo.”

Here is NBC’s last report with Engel in Syria, from December 13:

This is a breaking news story. Updates will be added.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

Would be really nice if the media protect the privacy of other people… I don’t see a media blackout to protect the general public at large… I guess you have to just say “An unnamed source who could not comment on the matter because they were not authorized to discuss it”

So you don’t believe you should pay taxes? So, since you said you reside in NJ, which was hit by the hurricane and lets say for argument sake that your trailer was washed away and all you had left was your bible and gun, would you accept a handout from FEMA to help get you back on your feet? Would you use medicade/medicare if you needed too? Once again, another unintelligent republican mouth breather that is voting against his own interests. And before you said that I do the same, I can’t think of one freedom that has been taken away from me since President Obama took office. I still live in a sick apartment, still make a great living and help out people that are less fortunate. Yup, doing pretty good.

You are a government employee, noob. You are the problem, and you don’t even see it.
My house was washed away, or very badly damaged in hurricane IKE. I did not take a dime from you are any other taxpayer to restore my home. My insurance company did not pay for my flood damage so I ate the cost. I chewed vigerously, shallowed twice and moved on.
It is you, the parisite living in a government supplied “sick” apt. that is draining the capital from the free market.

Give me back all the taxes I paid to FEMA, Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment, foodstamps, welfare etc, etc. and I would absolutely go it on my own.

Give me back all the money I pay for nearly any federal service save Military, and I as well as the people who receive it would be much happer and more productive.

So if you had no internet because there was money to fund satellites that the mobile companies use to post your drivel, that would be ok too? And no taxes to fix the roads or subway systems or mass transit or bridge and tunnels, that would be good by you? Dude, then just ef off and live in the woods. Do you want your money back from the bush admin for getting us into two unfunded wars? Let me know.

Saint, no way bro. I have definitely done my dirt, but my motivations to be successful are three fold: Take care of my parents and brother if need be, provide for my wife and children and help people that need help. You honestly see something wrong with that? Keep in mind, I am not asking anyone else to do what I do, just not hit the people that can’t hit back.

Internet uses primarily land lines so nice try there. As for roads, bridges, subways, mostly State and local governments supply those. Notice I said FEDERAL services… Are you asking if I think the feds should be giving out grants, etc for those projects? The answer is NO! If NY wants a tunnel, let NY’er pay for it. If Texas wants a bridge, let Texans pay for it. Don’t bleed me for to add pork to some other states pet project…

I do want the money back from the Bush’s wars. I’d like the money back from Obama’s wars as well.
Go live in the woods huh? Too bad you still have to pay your federal taxes in the woods, genius.

Same old recycled ******* talking points, you guys haven’t had a new idea in 70+ years.
You know Hitler deficit spent tons on roads, highways, bridges, social welfare, etc, etc and bankrupted his country as well… Perhaps we should elect our current Dear Leader to Fuhrer and be done with it?

Lets start slow.. Take a company like hughsnet that uses satellites for internet, or companies that get federal grants for high speed internet that doesn’t travel of land lines but have their own dedicated lines. Ok, now that’s one rebuttal for you to suck on. Next, which war did obama start sweetie? I mean, he is in the process of ending two of them, but can’t think of one that he started. Next.. As for living in the woods, if you build your own little shack, and don’t work (like you), why would you pay taxes? Man, your arguments are pretty easy to chew through.

As for the Hitler comment, i am surprised it took you so long to come up with that one. Just like a good fox news tool..

Your first statement makes the assumption that the feds SHOULD be picking winners in private business, which is wrong in and of itself, so not much of a rebuttal at all.

Which wars did Obama start? Well he drug us INTO Libya, supplied Al Qaeda and Muslim Brotherhood with arms in Libya, Syria, other “arab spring” countries, extended and expanded the war in Afghanistan, and expanded drone use around the world. I’m sure im missing a few but you get the gist.
What land would you build this “little shack” on without paying all sorts of taxes during and after construction and what money would you buy this land with, without paying income taxes?

As for hitler, don’t be mad because I beat you to your own accusation…

      @BSDETECTOR.

LOL. How many US troops are in Libya or did we just fly overhead and drop munitions along with 19 other countries? Gave weapons to Al Qaeda.. Dude, you’re too funny. Any proof of that, bc I surely haven’t seen any? Drone attacks!! You still haven’t shown me proof of him starting a war. You made suggestions that he deployed more US treasure to already existing ones, but nope, hasn’t actually started a new one. Jeezus dude, you’re pretty sad. Make a claim and nothing to support it.

Started a war, nope, hasn’t started a war. He may have prevented a mass killing of one’s own people, but there is no ongoing war. And follow me here, you mean to tell me that if you just packed up your isht (all two boxes of it) and moved to some back woods of some redneck state, that you would be paying taxes? You can’t be older than 5 or younger than 90. I say that because you have the mind of a child or one of someone with early onset. And lastly, as for incorporating Hitler into my daily dialogue, I tend not to. He murdered six million + of my people.

I must admit, your delusions are amusing, Bluehen.
In a conversation about how much $$ is/was being wasted on pointless wars, you ask “did we just fly overhead and drop munitions?” No, we launched million dollar cruise missiles too. No proof of him starting wars? Do you not watch the news? It was under his direction that Libya was bombed by the UN! I guess the fact that he’s spent more in Afhghanistan in 4yrs than bush did in 8 is irrelevant? Not t

suggestions that he deployed more US treasure to already existing ones, but nope, hasn’t actually started a new one. Jeezus dude, you’re pretty sad. Make a claim and nothing to support it. Not to mention all our boys he’s STILL sending to their deaths. Perpetuating war is just as terrible as starting it.

YOUR people, huh? I’m sorry, I thought we were all just patriotic Americans here, but I guess you couldn’t help but show your true colors. It’s so easy to get you people to show your true colors. A little logic and your whole world falls apart, haha!

Medicare? If you take 2.9% (going to 3.8%) f my income for a lifetime of course I am going to use Medicare. I would be broke without it. If the government does not use force to make me pay the 2.9%, then I can invest & spend it myself & do better.

Same thing with Social Security only that tax bite is 7.65% on top of the cost of the employer employing you has to pay another 7.65%

Then yopu pay Federal & state income taxes.

Let’s make it easy for you. the f/cking nobles use to provide their peasants (read slaves) with Christmas dinner. So I guess the peasants got something back for all the taxes the nobles extracted. It would have been rude & hypocritical for a peasant to complain about the taxes while eating that dinner.

It would have especially poor manners for said peasant to attend the dinner & to complain about having to pay the best livestock animal in his small holdings. I mean it is not like the peasant would want to keep his best animal. Why he might start a livestock breeding program & get cows that produce more milk & thus better his financial position.

There is nothing new under the sun. DDSS.

If he did fall in to the hands of friendly muslims, and has not lost his head yet, I am sure he has suddenly converted from atheist to a believer in God…and probably needs some fresh underwear. Perhaps he is reflecting on a life dedicated to furthering lies, hate and propaganda. I have no sympathy for fools such as this. You play in traffic, don’t complain if a car flattens you.

So, because he is a reporter for MSNBC (and a well respected one at that), he is a communist? Obviously with your level of intelligence you probably don’t know what a communist is, but I digress. As for the rest of your statement about restoring this country bla bla bla and suppressing my influence… haha, good look corky. Let us not forget which party smashed the other in the election, so if you want to continue with bated breath to suppress my influence, you only have approximately 69.3% of the country to go.. Ok, so you’re not country as so much as you are bridge and tunnel.. Gotcha. As for me, yup, I am a 1% elitist who doesn’t mind spending a little more in taxes to help people get free medical and psychological check-ups. If you “doesn’t mind spending a little more in taxes to help people get free…” then what’s stopping you? It’s VERY easy to pay extra money to the treasury at tax time especially.
By the way, if you’re spending more money for it to happen, then it’s not free. If you’re forcing others to do so at gunpoint, then it’s just theft. Try not paying the taxes forced upon you by Washington, then tell me they are not taken at gunpoint.

Very intelligent person, he speaks a number of the languages of that area. He has done some free lance work with ABC at the start of the second Gulf War and I have found that I often do not agree with his views. But, I do not wish him harm and hope that he is located safe and sound. Now, that being said, the fact that he was raised in a Jewish family should just tickle THE_JERK’s begonias.

No Jerk, the fact that he was raised in the posh upper east-side, by a Goldman Sachs financier, makes me pause. A Jew going into a war-torn Syria is like throwing an antelope into a hungry lions den.

So, when one of the MSM is in danger we should honor their requests not to “publish” or talk about it. Yet they will routinely publish confidential or top secret info, or photos, or stories (can you remember the Benghazi video story) that puts our troops and citizens in harms way. They can kiss my axe. I may get a Twitter account and tweet just to tick them off more.

THE_JERK, Nothing foolish about it. I did see the above. I also knew who this guy was the moment I put eyes on the story. I’ve seen his reports on TV before as well as have read some. I believe I said more about him in my upper post first than the story said. It struck me right away that it would be you who would relish the fact that he is Jewish, and sure enough, you lived right down to your usual standards.

Engle was/is doing his job. Jihad Jerk’s job is to foment hate and dissent. Belligerent, wiki, hitler-ite, aryan wanna be, woman-hater, people of color hater, antisemitic pos hater. Still seem pretty slacking on the whole asian hate aspect. The MoBroHood thanks you for your efforts, but not quite up to par.

Sadly this story about a NBC reporter will get MORE COVERAGE than the murder of Chris Stevens and 3 other Americans in Libya on 9-11-12.
IT’S PATHETIC how there is NO LONGER any REAL NEWS COVERAGE.
    Journalism is DEAD—Thanks to BHO.

Was Journalism ever really alive? Or is the concept of the objective news reporter simply a lie we have been constantly force fed since the 40s?

Apparently, Obama does not consider these people enemies…so it’s not like you are rooting against the country. I am sure his beheading will be coming out on Al Jezera soon. Perhaps as a “how to behead” video.

SIX : I highly recommend you watch the ENTIRE Daniel Pearl video, with the sound turned UP. Don’t turn your head away. Then we’ll see if you still feel the same about these Animals. Just make sure you have a large supply of sleeping pills and booze. Your going to need them just to be able to sleep for an hour or two a night for the first several weeks. Enjoy.

As much as I want Assad gone for all he done these past 12 years, right now does not seem the time. If 5,000 Al Qaeda are the spearhead of the 30,000 rebels & the other 25,000 can’t seem to do much what is the point. After the 5,000 defeat the much large Syrian Army what can the 25,000 other rebels do? Hold on for dear life but only with outside assistance?

I don’t think Assad has him. I don’t think he would dare harm a journalist for fear of making him a cause celebre & giving Obama an excuse for war.

Which pretty much leaves Al Qaeda/Al Nusrah or someone like that. Without U.S. support in terms of special forces (including the British SAS), Manpads, intel do not think the rebels would be holding as much ground as they are. Also if the U.S did nothing the Iranians & Russians might commit troops as more than just trainers & rear area security.

For all that the Al Qaeda still has to f/ck with us, because they can;t help themselves. They need that instant gratification of hurting someone, anyone, from the U.S. even if they are a journalist.

It could be that he found a story they did not want covered. But I think they what have messed with him even if he had found nothing.

Love might be the way. But if they don’t love you or respect you, they must fear you. Al Qaeda does not fear us.
