TheBlaze’s Will Cain Riles Up CNN’s Don Lemon Over Gun Control: ‘It Doesn’t Stand Up to Critical Thought’

TheBlaze’s Will Cain appeared on CNN Monday morning to discuss the recent tragedy that unfolded at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, where a crazed 20-year-old shot 20 children and 6 adults.  And in arguing that while everyone debates gun control, there are other factors at play that need to be evaluated (especially the shooter’s mental health), Cain riled up CNN’s Don Lemon — enough so that Lemon issued quite gun diatribe.

Cain explained:

I think that our focus on guns, it’s just, it’s too narrow.  It doesn’t stand up to critical thought.  Here’s the deal…gun violence [is] down from a peak in the 1990′s, and yet these mass killings are up.  Six of the deadliest 12 have happened since 2007, and so if guns are somewhat constant, what is the determining factor?  What has changed?

And we must figure out a way to address mental health, analyze mental health– something has changed in our country in the last 40 years…this process of de-institutionalizing mental health, or the rise in psychotropic drugs.  This seems to be the only thing that I can pinpoint now that is the delineating factor, and that’s what we must focus [on].

From there, CNN’s Don Lemon reported live from Newtown, Connecticut.  In his opinion, mental health is only a “secondary” issue, while the main focus needs to be banning certain types of guns.

Lemon argued (transcript via Newsbusters):

Who needs an armor-piercing bullet to go hunting?  Who needs an assault rifle to go hunting?  You can’t even use the prey that you kill with an assault rifle if you indeed do it. No one needs an assault rifle to go out and shoot a deer.  No one needs an assault rifle that’s capable of shooting 10, 20, 30 rounds off at the same time to shoot a duck, or to shoot quail.  It does not make sense.

Our first – the first thing that we need to do – and according to everyone that is here, even gun enthusiasts, is talk about what we’re doing with assault rifles, why should guns that should only be available in war zones, why are they available to people who are mentally healthy and people who are not mentally healthy.  That’s the issue that we need to deal with.

To say that gun violence is down, Lemon continued, “is insulting to everyone who lost a loved one here and is dealing with that.”

“Guns, bullets, and automatic weapons” should only be available to those who “hunt al-Qaeda and the Taliban,” and not “elementary school children.”

The second ammendment is NOT ABOUT HUNTING!

It’s about killing people. Plain and simple. It’s about killing the foreign invader, (militia). It’s about killing the criminal (self defense), it’s about killing the government (rebellion).

To kill armed people you need capable firearms, not single shot 22 rifles.

Why do so many idiots think the second ammendment is about killing Bambi and putting chow on the table?

Right on Ranger. I have about had it with the media trying to make the 2nd Amendment into a hunters rights issue. Either they have no clue about the 2nd amendment- or they are trying to reframe it to make the sheep easier to disarm. I think the latter.

The Argument is moot… Why do you need a Assault rifle that holds 30 rounds? Why do you need a car that can go faster than the speed limit? Why do you need a luxury car when you can drive a economy car like everyone else? Why do you need a truck with a large carrying capacity? Why do you prefer steak and not Gruel like the 3rd world?

Can someone tell these idiots we can’t buy assault weapons? Assault weapons are made to assault a position, the guns we get, while likely far surpassing the quality of military weapons, do not have automatic fire. Not ideal to be assaulting a position with. These idiots are attacking guns based on their looks. These people would look at a .22 LR AR-15 and call it an assault rifle. Sorry, no it’s a varmint rifle or a target rifle. I’m not a fan of these so called “assault rifles” but I haven’t been given one good reason yet why our rights of owning one should be amended.

It’s horrible this stuff is happening, but why not put more effort and time into mental health to help fix these wackos instead of chasing after false ghosts, oh right, because it isn’t about protecting people or helping people, it’s about the agenda.

They never want to look at the facts. And they don’t even want to touch the mental health issues! These kinds of guns have been available for 40, 50, 60 years, but there must be a reason these kind of killings are happening NOW, but the IDIOTS REFUSE to look at the real reasons these things are happening.

If they continue to look at the real reasons for this problem, the mental and spiritual issues, these kinds of slaughters will continue:

Something for all those saying the 2nd amendment is about hunting. Keep in mind, the revolutionary war was started at Lexington as the British soldiers marched through that town on their way to Concord where they were ordered to confiscate/destroy a munitions cache. Can anyone tell me what this cache consisted of? A gold star to anyone who answered cannon! (The British were successful in their primary objective in spite of heavy losses on the return journey, hence the need to take guns from Fort Ticonderoga to besiege Boston)

That’s right, the revolutionaries, private citizens had cannon capable of throwing 10lbs pieces of lead several miles. What is more, some colonists had bombards capable of throwing 15lbs of lead over 15 miles with accuracy. Now, tell me the founders were only protecting small arms for hunting and not military technology. Shoot a deer with a bombard and the meat will be less useful than with an assault rifle. No, the 2nd amendment is talking about military grade weapons, that is what they were defending when they started the war that birthed this nation, and that is what “shall not be infringed.” Can anyone dispute this one simple fact that puts the lie to the whole “reasonable gun-control” argument?

Argue that the constitution should be abolished, but do not pretend any gun-control is constitutional.

Source, 2nd grade history class. Am I the only one who went to school or just the only one who paid attention?

If our government bans “guns, bullets, and automatic weapons”, it will be a clear and decisive step towards tyranny. Closer to the Taliban, not further away. They will not rest until millions and millions of laws “protect” everyone from everything. And the problems will just be compounded. You cannot “law” your way into safety.

Finally someone saying what I’ve been saying for years.

It used to be that if a doctor thought someone was in enough danger to themselves or others and wanted to prescribe a psychotropic drug they first had to have the patient admitted to a mental health ward. Now days though, likely 1 in 5 of the people you work with, and go to school with, are on drugs like Xanax that have the following side effects:

Paradoxical reactions of Xanax include nervousness, aggressiveness, violent behavior, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, suicidal intentions, hallucinations and paranoia. Paradoxical reactions can occur after short-term or long-term use…

The explanation is that Xanax has a depressing effect on neurotransmitters in the body, which are involved in producing empathy when others get hurt, and fear in socially or physically threatening situations. When these neurotransmitters are artificially depressed, people are not as worried about real threats or harm done to others.

      Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/177450-the-long-term-side-effects-of-xanax/#ixzz2FMNIzhEe

      Sound familiar?

And yet doctors keep handing these pills out to people, and letting them roam society.

Read that statement above again, it sounds like a description from a zombie comic book. Aggressive, violent, and no emotional response to another human being physical or emotional distress… yep, ZOMBIE.

As always “don’t bring facts into this argument” –somehow it’s not right. So I’ll stop using facts. I’ll use an allegory.

What do you need text and data with your smartphone for? They are dangerous. Children get killed in car accidents ALL THE TIME because of texting. Do you know how many people died yesterday because of texting and driving??? The number of fatalities due to texting is up 100% from ten years ago! No more Obamaphones. People will only be using them to text, which is clearly dangerous. End text and data packages on your phone. They should be used only for the military. What can you possibly NEED to say to someone that can’t wait until you get to a land line? People have used dial up phones forever. You don’t need a cell phone or a text at all.

God forbid any of you 2nd Amendment partakers have any history of psychotropic or MAOIs in your medical prescription history. Soon your medical records could be registered to the review of bureaucrats. When they say they need to keep guns away from people with a history of mental illness they are talking specifically about you. It won’t matter if 15 years ago you broke down and were prescribed Prozac for a month. Mental illness is in your history, time to grab your guns.

Also, who decides what mental illness you have in order to clear you to buy a gun? A doctor? FYI most doctors hate guns.

I will support a type of mental illness gun grab only under the following condition:
That the percentage of those deemed not mentally stable to own a gun never exceeds the percentage of people in the population that have committed a violent gun act that were PREVIOUSLY declared to be mentally disabled. Otherwise we are penalizing people for a future crime they would have never committed.

Also, this means we are talking about spending hundreds of billions of dollars, that could otherwise be spent on things like housing homeless children, on a program that would only potentially affect about .001 of the population and these gun crimes will still occur anyways as people with mental illness will be fearful to tell anyone about their problems, especially a doctor who would remove their rights.

This whole mental health argument is a giant pandora’s box.

Who decides the definitions of mental illness? Who has the power to alter the definition?

The Progressive mental illness campaign, a campaign being sold by both the left and right (just listen to Hannity today) as a gun grab ends with this very simple and very logical next step about mental paranoia:

If someone feels they need a gun to protect their family from some sort of criminal element in their house is a symptom of mental paranoia.

And with that statement everyone who sees the second amendment as a form of individual self defense from criminals, foreign invasion, or domestic rebellion will be labeled mentally ill with paranoia.

I mean how often do see the argument from the left that pretty much all gun owners are overly paranoid? Hell, there’s already several comments in this thread alone either alluding to that affect or outright saying it. It won’t be that far of a leap for the gun grabbing Progressives.

Anyone can aquire an automatic weapon. Just like anyone can massacre a bunch of kids. You can buy one illegally, you can alter the gun you have and you cn go to jail for 10 years for possessing it. You can shoot up a school or, like in China, use a knife. You don’t need a gun and laws don’t get in your way. If I came across an automatic weapon say in my great grandfather’s attic when he dies, I wouldn’t touch it and I would call the police and turn it in. All other guns, well, out of my dead hands.

To shoot 10, 20 or 30 bullets at the same time as you said would require a modified firearm and a special, very expensive and hard to get “Federal” license. An AK can also be dropped in the mud, picked up and still fire very accurately so bone up on your gun topic’s before opening that pie-hole….hmmm..I said “bone-up” to a gay man…I crack me up…

Violence with firearms is a complex issue. It requires an honest, rational and non-emotional debate on issues like mental health, current gun-law enforcement, tyranny in government and the real reason the 2nd Amendment is necessary and it requires people with actual working knowledge about firearms. This pretty much eliminates liberals from the discussion.

I’m assuming this genius thinks that the AR in AR-15 stands for assault rifle. First of all, it does NOT! Ok, now that we have that out of the way. Many state allow a person to hunt with AR-15 .223s. I’ve done it. A good shot with the appropriate ammo and you are good to go.

Gee, you have to wonder why NOBODY mentions the shootings at Appalachian School of Law in Virginia in January 2002?

A foreign student who was failing shot the Dean and two others. Two students who were law enforcement types rushed to their cars and retrieved their weapons. Google it. They confronted the shooter after being joined by another student, an inactive duty Marine, and subdued the shooter. Only four accounts written at the time of the incident out of 482 articles total mentioned the fact that two students were armed. Any apparent agenda there?

Now, eleven years later, the lesson would seem to be clear: There will always be wolves; but, give the sheepdogs the same firepower and they can take care of business.

Think about this for just a moment: The same folks who sold over 2,000 high caliber weapons to Mexican drug cartels now say that they have a better idea when it comes to our Second Amendment rights. Tell that to the two families who lost sons who were US Border Agents slain by guns sold by the ATF to the Mexicans.

If the Obama administration is so good with guns, why are they running them to Al Qaeda elements in Syria? Why were four good men lost in Benghazi when it’s obvious that the guns were shipped out of Libya via Turkey and will one day soon appear “mysteriously” in a neighborhood near you?

One of the things that makes people like me so uneasy is the extreme similarities between Progressives and Nazis. They began around the same time and the Germans gained a lot of the propaganda knowledge from the Progressives. They both were founded on racist principles. T.Roosevelt and Wilson despised the ‘lower races’ and supported efforts to reduce their numbers by Planned Parenthood (had a different name before). Wilson segregated the Navy and believed that the lower races were the cause of many problems in the world. Both wanted to disarm the citizens and believed that central planning was superior to free markets. Wilson and Roosevelt thought the fascists had it right and believed that they were the new and improved style of gov’t. It is difficult to find many differences between Progressives and Fascists. Don’t say Fascists killed millions of Jews because Progressives have killed millions of all races simply to rid the world of “undesireables”.

Military style weapons are for the purpose of overthrowing your own government. The purpose of the second amendment is to overthrow your own government. Deer hunting is a secondary benefit. The government should live in fear of its citizens, not the other way around. The ability to remain a free man is based in the ability to defend oneself from other human beings and especially human beings from a tyrannical central authority.

A+, you are so right Cavallo. I would think this would be common knowledge among Americans who understand freedom and the Constitution but you see how public schools and liberalism have taught the youth to believe government is god. Time is fast approaching when Americans are going to have to exercise these rights against the government elite if we ever want to retain these rights.

I do like the fact that he mentioned that you cannot go hunting with an assault rifle because it holds too many rounds (apparently the dumb@$$ has never even held a gun). As for not needing AP rounds, talk to anyone from Texas that has done any big Boar hunting. I truly believe that whatever the Govt has in their inventory, we should be able to own as well.

    Don Lemon….

What do you mean, “Mental health is a secondary issue?”. Which came first:

    A. The nut?

    B. The Nut getting a gun?

It’s NOT a question of “Do we need those weapons to ‘hunt’ with.” It’s a question of having the RIGHT to possess and bear them as guaranteed by the Constitution. Have all the background checks you want, as is the case to purchase one now. I agree with that. The focus should be on getting rid of laws for ‘gun-free zones’, which DOES NOT WORK! Armed guards or staff along with school security measures is the ONLY thing that will reduced the carnage we currently see in these ‘gun-free zones’ now.

Why on planet earth does he bother? OK maybe some soul in TV land might take a hint, but the newesies are hell bent to ban guns, not take care of the ill who do this. They also don’t want to take any responsibility for glamourising violence by plastering it on the news 24/7. Violent games, movies, TV, news, and other things need to be looked at too. Guns in my book are the cheap shot-time for America to wake up and look at the whole lifestyle of the young and figure out how it goes from electronics, etc to giving disturbed people ideas of fame-thank you news people for that. Just a guess but I see a corraltion in it.

If regulating the Gun is an acceptable answer to END Gun Violence in the United States. THEN WHY does Chicago, New York City, Detroit, Oakland, etc…. have the HIGHEST GUN MURDER per capita??? They have the most stringent gun laws on the book, BUT have the HIGHEST GUN MURDER in the USA and the world???????

Ah, leftists and they’re usual, “Uh, that doesn’t sound right, so it must not be right.” mind-numbing tripe.

And, to think so many people feel leftists are “intelligent”. It’s laughable. Leftists falsely correlate education levels with intelligence levels; Lemon is a prime example. These people have no ability to think outside the box or independently, yet that’s what they “thought” they were doing all thru college. What’s “intelligent” about that???

The children were killed by an evil person, a person that knew how to drive, knew where the school was, knew where he lived and knew when to kill himself. If there was more of God in our lives we would have more morality and less violence. Good not evil,,,,,truth not lies,,,,,,life is short eternity is forever. We have minds of our own and I will chose goodness.

Feed the above diets to the public and you have nothing more than a nation of manchurian candidates ready at a moments notice to follow through on their lessions.Get some common sense,if that’s possible for your low intellect, and realize that out-lawing guns will not solve this societies’ lack of morality! You and your prog buddies have taught the sheeple well.Hope I’m not interupting your Resident Evil game.

Someone needs to learn about guns before he speaks. Almost every “hunting” rifle on the market is of higher caliber and does more damage than the .223 round this kid was using in his “assault” rifle.

The 223 rifle as in the trunk of the car – unused (if I have heard correctly). These idiots are throwing all their venom at the “Assault Rifle” whatever the heck they define that as. It appears likely that no form of rifle was used by this lunatic. The left loves to spin this as a hunters rights issue- the 2nd Amendment had absolutely NOTHING to do with hunting. It has to do with citizens protecting themselves against a tyrannical government… I think that is why they clamour for Gun Control.

How is a sane person expected to listen to anything a nazi says? It is nonsensical. Happy Hanukkah though.

Couple questions for the CNN talking heads:

    A. Do you know the difference between an automatic weapon versus a semi-automatic weapon?
    B. Which is more dangerous. A 30 round clip or three 10 round clips?
    C. Define an Assault Weapon

I wish they could address when, a weapon, bought itself, loaded itself, prepared the shooter with armour, loaded pistols, drove the would be shooter to his mothers, make the shooter kill his mother then go to the elementary school and kill so man? It seems to me, logical one, that they should be looking into why the shooter did it. Question two….why is it that the one thing that all these mass killers spent massive amounts of time on video games like Tour of Duty and others? The one in Belgium said he spent 16 hours a day on them refining his skills….News media….can we show some focus on the why the guy and not why the gun? Work with us here…..

Well put, I wish people would stop call AR’s an “ASSAULT RIFLE” just b/c they see AR. AR is only short for Armalite which sold the AR-10 and AR-15 platform to Colt.
