Was Jesus Gay? Church Billboard Says It’s Time for Baby Jesus to ‘Come Out’

St. Matthews-in-the-City Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, uses extremely-controversial tactics in its advertisements. Every December, the house of worship posts a billboard — one that is so over-the-top and offensive that it attracts international attention. Last year, Jesus’ mother, Mary, was shown gazing at a positive pregnancy test. And now, the most recent ad takes edginess to a new level, as it questions Jesus’ sexuality and seeks to spark discussion.

The billboard depicts baby Jesus with a rainbow halo over his head and the words, “It’s Christmas. Time for Jesus to Come Out.” Clearly alluding to the Christian savior’s sexuality, the ad is intentionally controversial, while apparently seeking to incite a debate surrounding homosexuality.

“This year we invited discussion and debate on the sexual orientation of Jesus,” St. Matthew’s clergy Rev. Glynn Cardy and Rev. Clay Nelson said in a statement published on the church’s web site.

The ad has been placed outside of the house of worship, where it is certainly sparking conversation. While some Christians will surely be outraged by the message being conveyed, Nelson notes that some historians have attempted to deeply explore Jesus’ sexuality.

Rather than embracing the notion that the savior was definitively gay, the faith leader seemed to provide a conflicting statement when he noted that Jesus’ sexuality is of little importance.

“Maybe gay, maybe not. Does it matter?,” he said.

This statement is somewhat odd, especially after the preachers said that they were inviting discussion and debate on the matter.

As for New Zealand’s debate over same-sex unions, Cardy added that Christ’s teachings do not delve into the same-sex attraction debate, but that the savior “always supported the marginalized in society.”

But sparking a discussion over gay marriage and homosexuality isn’t the only reason St. Matthews-in-the-City Church is pushing the billboard’s controversial message. The church notes that last year’s image brought the church massive exposure on Facebook and over 30,000 visits to the church’s web site. Clearly, publicity for the church is a key motivating factor.

The church’s 2009 billboard was arguably more offensive, as it featured an image of Mary and Joseph in bed together. The caption under it read, ”Poor Joseph, God was a hard act to follow.”

  These fringe churches, even the mainstream ones, seem to have forgotten to read the Bible (Romans, Leviticus, etc). Christ Jesus IS THE CHURCH, all else is man made. The evil that parades as truth is from Satan himself, who rules this world, who causes the bad things to happen (cancer, murder, etc). God is MERCY, is the LIGHT, is SALVATION through Christ Jesus. Anyone, who takes the Bible and twists it will regret the day they were born. The socialist/communist left are hell bent on destroying the Bible and its believers, and they may get their wish, but in the end, it is they that will be destroyed for ETERNITY. Repent of your sins and do them no more, through Christ Jesus, believe in Him, who died for you, and was raised from the dead; who left us with the Holy Spirit, is the ONLY way to salvation and eternal life in Heaven. In the garden Jesus who was the creator made them male and female of all species including man, their names were Adam and Eve. Since Jesus created them male and female and gave Moses the law which included the penalty for same-sex unions . Jesus did not come to the earth in the form of man to have a family but to save what he had created from sin. Man even today has problems following simple rules and laws of all kinds. His love has no bounds for us , he stands between us and judgement for our sins, he just asks for one thing….to let him into your heart .   And you know that….how exactly? You don’t even have proof that Jesus EXISTED, MUCH LESS what his sexuality was if he did. The bible certainly doesn’t mention his sexual orientation, nor any instances of sexual attraction or copulation with men OR women.
  
  You really have no ground to claim ANYTHING about Jesus’ sexuality (and nothing but a storybook to claim anything about his existence and life) except your own emotional reactionary prejudices about what you think would have been “proper” for Jesus’ sexuality.

  Archeological finds that experts said did not exist also confirm the truth of scripture.
  Did you know that colomns were found at the site of the Red Sea as mentioned in scripture
  Did you know that coral incrested chariot parts, human and horse bones were strewn about an area of the Sea that is described in scripture . That this area is a shallow area as compaired to the deep under sea gourge on both sides.
  Since you say you know scripture, then you would also know that it is in some instants written from eye witnesses and we know the writings as I mention above of those that knew these eye witnesses.
  The truth is out there for those interested in finding … and the reason why scripture says … seek and you will find.
  The bible is quite provable … now, if you need to have a personal eye witness encounter to believe, hang around cause the bible also directly speaks to the very days in which we live, and when Jesus does return as the Almighty ( means the “warrior King ” the Jews expected the first time) it may be to late.

After that you go into a big database in the sky and they track which stories you read, what pages you came from and where you go when leaving TheBlaze, MSNBC or other webpages.

  Perhaps the church does have a point though, young man has no girlfriend, hangs out with hookers, hates the rich, sounds like a progressive to me.

Matthew 19:6- And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female.

There never has been, there never will be any question that Jesus was beyond man’s sexual proclivities and mores when he was with us on this earth. He reiterated the blessed union of man and woman as presented above as part of his fullillment of the word of God. To attach a sexual orientation to Jesus is to be disingenous, misleading and honestly…quite stupid. Jesus was not sent here to marry or procreate he was beyond these things.

  Correction – Straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth to life (eternal in the presence of the Father), and few their be that find it. You have given to much credit to those within the church. Most of those members will not return to the presence of the Father either.

  That is why I believe that the King James (Authorized) Version IS the Word of God! Once you deny and change that version – than you will have to accept all others as being the true Word of God! Did you notice that they changed the story of Lot and when the “men of Sodom” tried to get in the house “so that they could know them” (we all know what that means) they changed “know” to “rape”. If they change it there here is another place they have to change the word–
  In Matthew 1:25 is says: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
  If it is okay to change “know” to “rape” in the OT, then here in the NT they would have to change the word “knew” to “rape”. Therefore, they changed the Word of God and this church will have to say that Joseph “raped” Mary.
