NRA Breaks Silence on Sandy Hook Shooting: ‘We Were Shocked, Saddened and Heartbroken’

The National Rifle Association broke its silence on the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre on Tuesday, issuing a statement and vowing to “offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.” The organization plans to hold a major news conference on Friday in the Washington, D.C. area.

The gun rights organization was criticized by some anti-gun advocates for not speaking out following the shooting. However, the NRA said it was quiet out of respect for the families of the victims.

Read the NRA’s first statement since the tragic mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. last week:

National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

I believe this is a golden opportunity for President Obama to repeal the use of gun free zones, after all, why turn down the services of free government workers? Do concealed carry permit holders get paid? Do they have retirement benefits? Yet, they offer a valuable service, crime prevention?

OK, why not ban gun free zones, and while we are at, lets offer to pay concealed carry permit owners extra pay and benefits from money we don’t have anyway? Why not offer teachers a couple hundred bucks a month to carry a weapon, with reasonable strings attached?

Instead of attacking gun owners, why not make reasonable efforts to protect children by ensuring that teachers can be paid more money to carry a firearm which will require proper training and screening? I thought the liberals loved free stuff, loved the idea of communism, why don’t they take advantage of something that is actually free? Concealed carry permit owners are free law enforcement agents with no pay and no benefits, other than the satisfication they have of protecting their community?

We challenge the US Congress to defend the Constitution, and we challenge the President to put this event behind us, by embracing a future where we are not afraid of guns, but criminals are?

  Each school district should decide it’s own policies. What we don’t need is a national law enforcing a mandatory law on all schools, thus disabling them from making choices for themselves. If no teacher or principle feels they can handle a situation with a firearm, than parents should demand their local school adopt adequate and proper security measures and hire professional guards to enforce them. I’m 100% sure the super majority of parents will not mind paying extra in local property taxes to secure the very lives of their precious children. The left’s cry that these guards can become lose cannons is just baseless and foolish. When have professional security guards become a threat to the people they’re protecting? When have capitol police shot politicians? We can hire retired police officers and veterans to guard our schools, if need be. There’s many ways to implement this needed security, but taking no action, and leaving our children sitting ducks is not permissible anymore. Liberal’s and their feel good do nothing laws have done us more harm than good. Armed guards will not use guns to stop school fights, they will have certain strict rules to follow. Every cry the liberal makes of a wolf approaching is based on false premises and quick presumptions. They say, what if a kid accidentally gets shot by a gun, I say, what if 20 kids get slaughtered by a maniac, without any hope to survive? You do the math.

  Also, “ammo commonality” is equally important. You want to have guns and reload calibers that both you and the enemy will field. Stick with the standards: 9mm, .40cal, .45acp, 5.56×45 (223), 7.62×51 (308) , .300 Win Mag, 12 gauge shotgun, .338 Win Mag/Lapua and .50 Cal. Anything else is insignificant.

This is in regards to the recent shooting in Connecticut. In my opinion, what we need is not more
gun control but “people control”. The suspect was denied when he tried to buy a rifle prior to the shootings. That is a gun law and it worked. What did not work is having a mentally ill person living in a home with unsecured firearms. There are millions of law abiding citizens who should not be punished for one person. Look at some of the influences. Our society today has movies and TV shows that regularly show firearms and shootouts. The most popular video games today show fighting with firearms. The news papers today sensationalize and exploit shooting incidents for news value which may encourage copy cat shootings. A mentally ill person should not have access to firearms. Face it, someone who would shoot their mother in the face is gravely ill. The news reports that the same day of the shooting an adult entered a primary school in central China and stabbed 22 children and one adult with a knife, some seriously.
Looking at statistics (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/11/alcohol-related-deaths-_n_821900.html), the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that Alcohol kills more people each year than aids, TB or violence, nearly 4% of the world’s population. Where is the outrage over this!
It was shameful that news media were trying to interview 6 and 7 year old victims. They were trying to
make big news, no consideration for the families. Eventually

  Yes, and I was also considering becoming the “highest” member. Not that it means anything, but I always thought if you’re gonna give your money to any organization (and I mean ANY), the NRA is(was) a place you knew FOR CERTAIN your money was going EXCLUSIVELY to a cause of paramount importance.

The key word is “meaningful” and if there was at least one Air Marshal-type CCW schoolteacher per school it would limit the scale or be a deterrent. BUT as you pointed out due to the existence of evil they will go elsewhere (and hopefully they’ll be a well-trained CCW toter waiting for them).

Not “meaningful” equals weapon bans or registration (see Britain and Norway) or anything else that makes law abiding Americans defenseless.

If they would get the NEA/teachers unions out of the way, myself and many vets would probably take advantage of Troops-to-Teachers, for this scenario.

And, they will take advantage of the lawful being put in the predicament to not be able to protect themselves. Look at Chicago, NYC, DC! Then to top it off, schools are simply built as soft targets to really bring out the criminally insane. Who goes out and kills peaceful citizens in public? Criminals. Who goes out and kills peaceful citizens en mass? The criminally insane. Also, notice I did not mention with a gun. The NRA was rather prudent in waiting before they issued a word as to the obvious calamity. Were not their hearts crushed just like yours? But manyh will find fault with them; too bad. They would have been villified if they spoke, or if they were silent, but the right thing was to be quiet.

The NRA is full of Americans, your neighbors, your heart surgeon, your vet, your teacher, your local car dealership owner, your optician, your barber, your seamstress, your tailor, your local farmer, your kids coach, your daughters piano teacher. They are middle America and they support all proper rights.

They have been made into an image of a monster only by they whose citizenship has been crompromised by a socialist agenda. The NRA stands tall, and has nothing to be ashamed of.

Give a heads up to them; they are a tour-de-force for a sinking country, its about time we the people tell them

The NRA is in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t spot. I think they did the right thing shutting down all web sites as it would only be a place for the crazies to spew their venom. Prediction on gun control… the Fed’s will go to great lengths on the new gun control reform and get it passed. There will be an even more violent act of terror in the near future (experts all say there is someone out there planning something bigger than Newtown). When this happens they will not say that their gun control measures failed…they will say they didn’t take it far enough…

  The most digusting thing of all is that we send our most precious possesions to these “gun free” killing zones everyday, thinking they are safe, but in reality the progs, with their infinite wisdom are too stupid to realize their mistake. Soon, a market will emerge for private schools that actually have armed experts protecting their kids. The Israelis already do it, but it is nationalized. Still, they have had great success.

Guns save more lives then they take, a gun by itself has never killed yet the threat of someone possibly having a gun has, The recent movie theater shooter actually went to three other theaters prior to shooting up the one with the big GUN FREE ZONE sign (aka we wont shoot back sign) The 1st 3 didnt have that sign and he passed them up out fear some in there might have a gun and shoot back!!! Look at the teenager in AZ that saved his siblings from an intruder by shooting him with his dads gun that was purchased for home security and was just that!!!!!!!

I find this to be one of the most hilarious aspects of the aftermath.
The NRA has been mercilessly excoriated for remaining silent —- the one thing that NO ONE has commented regarding this is that the NRA is the ONLY entity involved so far that has exhibited a
substantial level of dignity, respect & class.

There are actually times when you should just simply shut your F’ing cakehole. Its called TACT.
Kudos to the folks at the NRA for displaying some.

  Yeah, when ever this is a train wreck, you don’t see EMD jump out there and speak up. When a passenger jet crashes taking many lives, Boeing or other manufacturers don’t exactly come to the forefront and run their mouths. Nor does Motor Trend step forward when there is a major highway pile up. But, people like ENCINOM who have been very vocal here about the NRA acts as though the NRA advocates that the mentally ill should have access to firearms and such. Nothing further from the truth. The NRA has teaching and training programs to make children aware of firearms and what to do should a child spot one in a home or out in public somewhere. Starting with instructions not to touch it. The NRA does advocate that the 2nd Amendment be kept as written.

It’s good that the NRA waited to comment out of respect for the victims. Defending gun rights in the face of overwhelming tragedy is a difficult task for anybody and virtually impossible to do without coming across as insensitive and callous.

That said, if the NRA caves on assault weapons or magazine capacity limitations to appease the emotional knee jerk legislative response that always arises after these things, my faith in them will be shaken for the last time.

For those in the mountain west (particularly Colorado), if the NRA caves on gun rights over the risk of “looking bad,” consider investing your time and membership dues instead in someplace like Rocky Mountain Gun Owners – there is major legislation coming in the Colorado legislature next session on assault weapons and plenty of other things and RMGO is likely to be leading the defensive charge.

The NRA has done more to prevent gun related issues than any other organization. They train people, young and old in the proper use, care and maintenance of all types of legal firearms. The NRA has never done anything to encourage willful misuse of a firearm. I have been, and will continue to be, a loyal member of this fine organization.

The NRA nor it’s members are responsible for what happened in Newtown. They need not apologize or try to make excuses for what happened. I appreciate their silence on the shooting. I wish the pundits and the President had been as respectful of those who are mourning their dead.

  You should visit their museum in NoVA. Lots of history but not a lot of progressive feel good crap to be had. We were founded on and became who we are because of firearms.   I’d strongly recommend reading the Opinion of the Court, including dissent, of DC v. Heller (2008) and the incorporation against the states in McDonald v. Chicago (2010). Very vibrant discussion of both sides, with the majority addressing both banning an entire class of arms (handguns) and the policy choices of legislatures. The self defense and militia arguments are covered quite thoroughly.

  Do you know how long it takes for police to respond to a crime on a good night? Twenty Minutes. If you manage to get to the phone, call the dispatch and inform them of the situation (usually you don’t even have that luxury and 90% of calls are made after the fact) it will be around 20 minutes before they even arrive. Much less enter, because priority is to secure the site and make sure they aren’t throwing their own personnel into a meat grinder.
  
  Don’t presume that the government will be there to protect you when bad stuff happens. Most of the time they are only there to deal with the aftermath. I’ll keep my weapons thank you very much, you can stick with your cell phone.

The NRA doesn’t need to say ANYTHING! They didn’t DO anything to kill those kids. You can NEVER make sure this doesn’t happen ever again b/c someone will use a knife or knitting needles. OH GEESH!

  In the UK they reacted to a very similar incident in Dunblane, Scotland and there hasn’t been a school shooting since.
  
  Truth is you don’t care who has to die, as long as you can keep your toys, and don’t start with that rubbish about tyrannical governments, you don’t view guns as tools, you lust after them. The nauseating way people react when there’s an article about some new gun or accessory on this site. Grow up!

  GUZ75, With that being said, you should tell us all here and now how you will from this moment forward swear to never use any type of automotive transportation ever. I’ve been a traffic accident investigator and know how they kill and maim. In fact they kill far more than guns do annually in this country. Also, you need to swear that you will never ever have anything to do with a physician ever again in the future. They by accident kill more people annually than gunshot, on purpose or by accident in this country annually. Then swear off water, no water, no drownings. Okay, the last one was sarcastic, but in accordance with your logic I could go about edged weapons and even more. Come on, admit it, you want your toys too.

  The UK never had “gun rights” or any other rights for that matter. The UK has plenty of bombings to make up for lesser amount of shootings. In fact, in the UK they arrest homeowners for defending their property. Of course, I suppose you are a voyeur and enjoy the fact government cameras watch every aspect of UK citizens lives….UK has never been free so they are not a good comparison.
