Online Gun Retailer ‘Cheaper Than Dirt’ Suspends Firearm Sales (UPDATED)
UPDATE III: Dec. 19, 8:00 p.m. EST: After announcing that it would soon resume online sales of firearms, Cheaper Than Dirt released the following press release:
Cheaper Than Dirt! recently announced that it was temporarily suspending online sales of firearms pending a review of its order processing and procedures. Well-known for its ability to process and ship orders within 24 hours, online sales have skyrocketed to a point where it may take up to 72 hours for firearms and other items to ship.
“In light of recent events, we believe it is prudent to review our policies and procedures to ensure we can continue to provide the products and firearms our customers demand,” said Chief Operations Officer Roberta Wilson. “We will resume online sales once we update our process and continue as we have always done by shipping firearms only to FFL dealers.”
Ms. Wilson closed with, “As a long-time supporter of the Second Amendment, we will continue to serve the needs of the firearms community while ensuring our unsurpassed level of quality and customer service.”

UPDATE 6:54 p.m. EST: Cheaper Than Dirt posted the following statement to its Facebook page at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday:
Cheaper Than Dirt! has temporarily suspended online sales of firearms.
As a long time supporter of the Second Amendment, Cheaper Than Dirt! will continue to promote the safe and responsible use of firearms by law abiding customers. During this temporary suspension, we will review our policies and promotions.
No further information was provided.

Online gun retailer Cheaper Than Dirt announced Tuesday that it will be suspending certain firearm sales “effective immediately” pending an internal policy review. What exactly they are reviewing remains unclear, but the announcement has prompted swift reaction on the site’s Facebook page.
Their Facebook message reads:
“Cheaper Than Dirt! is suspending online sales of firearms effective immediately. We are reviewing our policy internally, and will continue to be the leader in the outdoor industry with our full line of gear and accessories.”
In less than 45 minutes, the message already had thousands of comments:

There are now over 8,000 comments in the two hours since the message was first put up. And because the post comes amid the fierce gun control battle after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary last Friday– where 20 students and 6 adults were fatally shot– many are accusing the retailer of “selling out” to the gun control crowd:

It should be noted, though, that the company’s language does not specifically reference Sandy Hook or the current gun control controversy.
Dick’s Sporting Goods, however, has made it clear that it is taking action specifically because of the shooting. The retail giant announced Tuesday that it would be suspending the sale of modern rifles nationwide in light of the tragedy, declining to say exactly how long the suspension would last, or which guns would be pulled.
TheBlaze reached out to Cheaper Than Dirt for comment, but did not receive one.

Personally, I think their systems are overwhelmed by the demand and they are taking a pause for the cause to catch up. I was surfing their site over the weekend and their systems seemed to be struggling greatly. Time outs and then one minute it would say out of stock for an item and ten minutes later it would be back in stock; but then adding to cart would report out of stock again. A buddy said he had successfully made an order but then was later told via an apology email that the item had already sold. I’m thinking the skyrocketing demand has broken their flux capacitor.
Or, they are caving from lobby pressure. I can’t imagine them caving though, but who knows…

Generally were always told what store sold the guns, maybe we’re about to find out these were sold by CTD via an FFL seller with an expired license?
The possibilities are endless and where we land on the jump to conclusions mat is anyone’s guess.

They seem to sell everything related to guns. They did not sell directly but only though a Federal Firearms License holder who most often are police. Now when people want to buy guns they stop selling.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 4:18pm@Muffy, I think all internet firearm sales have to be shipped to a licensed local dealer. Just buy from the local dealers and the pawnshops. I think there are other reputable internet dealers to use to buy ammo and survival equipment. Cheaper than Dirt is done.
Or like a previous poster said in another thread, buy from the gun shows while you can, buy privately. Don’t let them get a record of what weapons you own. Keep it secret. Have some broken, corroded, or disused pieces ready to hand in should it be demanded.

Umm yeah… That’s because that is the law. The law says you can’t ship a gun to someone’s residence and have it left on the door step for 12 hours waiting for someone to steal it. It has to be shipped to a dealer so that the exchange to the purchaser occurs in person and any necessary background checks can be made.
I’ve purchased this way several times. Any gun shop you would frequent anyway already has at least a class 3 FFL necessary for this service or else they wouldn’t be able to sell any guns at all.
I’ve never heard of going to the police department for FFL delivery of a firearm, but it makes sense and might be smart as it may save some money on the background check costs… I’ll have to call my local sheriff’s office to see if we do that here…

This was a very bad move by CTD and they will pay for siding with hysteria!
Prices were always high on ammo… I did make like a bandit few yrs ago on HK USP.45 mags.. think they screwed up had them priced at cost :)

Incorporate in a gun friendly state with low corporate taxes and sales taxes. Contract with the manufacturers directly for discounts.
Some day we might be sneaking guns into the US from the Mexican cartels. It would be sad that we would need to seek freedom assistance from Mexican drug merchants. Ce la vie

Everytime I go in there, there is a customer at the Sporting Goods desk (sometimes more than one) trying to purchase and filling out paperwork for one of the AR-15 style rifles. Ammo is flying off the shelves in record volume it seems as well. It’ll be like it was in 2008 when the shelves were ALWAYS empty do to demand. Wal-Mart would be foolish to give up that volume of revenue. Especially since on average they only make 3 cents out of every dollar of revenue.

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 5:07pmI just received what has now become my last purchase from Cheaper Than Dirt delivered yesterday. Any entity that caves to such emotional hysteria is not a company I feel comfortable in patronizing.
The deaths of those children damn near tore my heart out, but I realize that the problem was a mentally ill perpetrator, not the tools he stole to commit the act.
If CTD will cave to hysteria this easily how much further will they be willing to go in the name of “social consciousness?” Are they going to supply the DHS with lists of customers who buy ammo or survival gear, etc.? They not only shot themselves in the foot, they used a scope to make sure they didn’t miss!

CTD has got a lot of business from me in the past years. Not going to be shopping there in the future since they obviously don’t want my busines.

If only the government has Firearms then we are slaves. God help us. The problem is the fact that you can not track the mentally ill. When the police come across these people they have no way of knowing that they are dealing with someone mildly disturbed or a major psychopath. Just because you a problem does not make you dangerous but it does play a part in how you deal with people. At least the people like police and gun dealer know what they would be dealing with. Many gun dealer will not sell to just anyone..

Are you kidding me? I literally could not make this up. It was my day off today so I though I’d drive over and pick up a Colt or Sig Sauer AR-15 type before all the new legislation hits the fan. Literally as I pull into Dick’s Sporting Goods I hear over the radios that the ‘suspended sales’. Being here in PA Dicks’s is the only seller within a 2 hour plus drive. Even Wal-marts here don’t carry firearms. So then I get the name of a FFL in the area from a friend and figure I’d order one and boom see this story.
Anyone help me? I live in Central Pennsylvania area

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 9:22pmI would suggest that anyone, anyone who understands that the end times are upon us as is clear from the Mayan Calender, anyone who understands that the Caliphate is about to take over the world and impose Sharia law, any who knows that President Obama is about to impose Marshal Law and prevent any further elections (like those elections who voted all those communist Democrats into office), anyone who knows about the coming hyperinflation that will make US currency worthless (my recommendation: Godline’s special limited edition End-Of-The-World coins, worth $0.2 on the dollar!), anyone who understands that the over-prescriptions of antibiotics by money hungry government controlled doctors is going to create a super-bacteria that will kill all of mankind except those gun owners who have holed up in their safe houses, that they immediately log on and buy all the guns you can. You have to balance you expenditures at that fine gun outlet however with the money you send to Godline. I can’t help you with that balance because I’m not a certified CPA. It’s a guns or butter kind of choice. My advice is to look at your inventory of foodstuffs and water, evaluate the likelihood of an assault and the size of the assault, and compare that to your weaponry and ammo. It’s a balancing act, and you may want to at this point consider “extra income.” Be assured though that you won’t be sorry if you spend the extra with Godline~~!

1. ATF sent a squad, or at least a letter threatening to revoke their dealer license over technical BS? This would disallow all sales of ammo, gun parts and guns. Management is deciding how big their wallet is to fight action.
2. IRS sent a letter demanding special “taxes” for a little known rule, or they have the option to stop selling certain products. Wallet review is in progress.
3. FBI is “investigating” a claim by some high up senator that they broke some other law. A plea bargain is offered. Owners are reviewing their get-out-of-jail cards.
Point is, the regulators are corrupt. Just like their handlers. Selling guns is inherently risky for the company. ATF has a large nebulous power. Wait before you judge.

So had this demented ass clown stole his mom’s Chevy SUV, drove to the school, crashed through the fence, and ran over 20 kids, would GM shut down? Would used car lots refuse to sell any Chevys? This country is full of stupid people, and I have yet to see one person with an ounce of common sense get on TV, and speak logically, and with any real gun knowledge about this situation, or about guns and the magic “assault rifles”.
Geraldo on the radio this morning claiming that an AR would never be used for defence. Really? So why the heck is every picture of the cops heading toward the school in Newtown all carrying an AR. Why was it the most logical choice to stop such a threat? Read on Huffington Post where it was stated that one cannot hunt with an AR, because the bullets are special and destroy all the meat. That is a freaking brilliant deduction there you savants. So a .308 150 grain soft point from a bolt action Remington is fine for deer, shoot the same bullet from an AR 10, and the black color and plastic fore grip actually put a magic spell on the bullet, making it destroy all the meat.
We live in a nation full of stupid people.
I hear the NRA is going to make a big announcement this coming Friday. If they give an inch on this, they will not see a penny from me again.

ARs, AKs, SKSs, FNARs, M1a, FN FAL….. are military style battle rifles. In civilian form they are semi auto rifles or carbines. In military form, they may have the ability to shoot on full auto, or burst mode. Most of these have detachable magazines (not clips, like all the morons on the MSM claim).
We also have civilian style semi auto such at the Browning BAR hunting rifles, Remington made them, and all manner of semi auto .22s and shotguns.
When the 2nd Amendment was written, it gave the average citizen the ability to own the same rifle, musket, or pistol that the Army or police had. that was the idea. Madison, Jefferson, Adams… did not give us the right to keep firearms to hunt rabbits, or shoot home invaders. They gave us the right to keep arms to stop a government that turns against the constitution and against the people. Thus the reason the modern day socialist democrat so hates “assault rifles”. This weapon would be the weapon of choice to stop a government gone bad.
Most libs hate the police, and bash the police every time they have to use force. The police have ARs. So what in the heck do you think would happen if you take all ARs, semi autos, and hi capacity magazines from the common people, but let a corrupt police force have them?
I knew it would not take Obama and crew long after the election to go after guns, and I was correct.

As for them only shipping weapons through Federal Firearms Licensees, that’s not because they’re a police front or anything else like that. It’s simply the LAW that all firearms made after 1898 have to be transferred to the end user by a licensed dealer. Cabela’s is a federal firearms licensee, as is Walmart. Hardly cops by any means.

We’ve made it illegal for employees to carry weapons at work – we’ve forced them to be vulnerable to active shooters – we’ve disarmed responsible adult that would have protected children from a nutjob. The solution is to get the government off our backs, allow teachers, principals, secretaries, custodians to carry guns. You still might have nutjobs try to kill people, but they won’t be able to change their clip before an armed adult puts them down. Those who have created “gun free zones” in our schools and forcibly disarmed responsible adults who would have protected the children, have blood of innocents on their hands as a result of their pseudo-intellectual interference with individual rights to defend ourselves. Why do gun control nutjobs want to disarm the very people who would protect our children? Why do gun control nutjobs want to force innocent people to face armed criminals with nothing but staplers and pencils to defend themselves with?

From the discussion, I don’t believe any of our members will buy from them again. While the Blaze does need advertisers, It is a disservice to Blaze subscribers to continue to do business with CTD.

I just bought a Glock from a local shop that was $300 cheaper that CTD prices. I buy ammo from TheSportsmanGuide.com order anything you want and it’s delivered in about 3 or 4 days. And cheaper than CTD. I could be wrong about this but the way I read their magazine even their ammo has to be sent through a FFL dealer. So there’s an added charge. So if they want to wuss out and bow down to the black plague it doesn’t bother me.

They are tracking devices. Don’t go out in a blaze of glory and not accomplish anything. If you are going to choose that route, then for God’s sake make sure that you take at least one of the tyrant’s goons with you. Me, I choose guerilla warfare instead. Strike when you know you can take them, withdraw when the opposition has the advantage. But, if in neighborhoods, and they come for your neighbors, pile onto them with everything you got. I’ll take a wait and see.
I was in our local big box sporting goods store yesterday buying 22LR and noticed they only had a third as many guns as they normally do. And a good bit less ammo than normal. I guess, people are buying them out.

CTD is one of GB’s sponsors though, would love to hear the excuse they come up with… Unless one of the guns used was purchased from them, they’re probably just doing it for free publicity. It’s still a reason not to do business with them. And if one of them was purchased from them then they’re doing it out of fear, regardless of motive, this is very bad timing for any kind of big decisions. Cheaper Than Dirt had bulk ammo at good prices as well as primers and powder. I just didn’t care to stand in line to get a clerk to get the powder or primers out of the back at Cabella’s. Now I will.
