Alien-Like Skulls Unearthed in Mexican Cemetery — So What’s the Explanation?
A more than 1,000-year-old cemetery in Mexico has yielded archaeologists perhaps more than the average skeletons they were expecting. Of the 25 skeletons unearthed, 13 had heads that many would liken to the modern interpretation of aliens.

But before we can jump to “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” conclusions, researchers don’t think these were extraterrestrial beings among the ancient Sonora culture. According to Past Horizons, archaeologist Cristina Garcia Moreno with Arizona State University said the skull malformations were probably from a binding ritual.
The “cranial deformations” found in the research approved by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History had not been exhibited in the Sonora culture before.

“Cranial deformation in Mesoamerican cultures was used to differentiate one social group from another and for ritual purposes, while the dental mutilation in cultures such as the Nayarit was seen as a rite of passage into adolescence,” Garcia Moreno said, according to Past Horizons. “This is confirmed by the findings at the Sonora cemetery where the five bodies with dental mutilation are all over 12 years in age.
“In this case, you cannot recognise any social differences because all the burials seem to have the same characteristics. Nor have we been able to determine why some were wearing ornaments and others not, or why of the 25 skeletons only one was female,” she continued.
The significance of the finding is that is shows the spread of Mesoamerican culture further than previously thought as similar cranial malformations and mutilation to teeth that was see in other cultures that is now being exhibited in this one.

I also like to know if the Huns & Central American Indians tradition of head shaping was from a common ancestor out of Africa. Africans have longer skulls than Caucasians (They have shown that Cleopatra’s family had a bit of African blood (along with the Greek) from skull morphology & DNA. They found Cleo’s sister in Asia Minor where she was assassinated.). You see it in the art of Nigeria for one. I wonder if over time as some groups migrated out of Africa into Asia, they lost the long skull due to mutation & in order to get that look they started head shaping & the cultural practice lasted anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 years ago.

What makes cultures so vastly different and so far removed from each other revere the practice of elongating the skulls of their people? Why do they do it? Who are they trying to imitate?
If this was a practice limited to just one area, one might be able to understand the idea but these cultures are seperated not only by long periods of time but also vast distances and across oceans. There should have been no contact – - – person to person that is – - – between these cultures. Where did the common thread eminate from?
There are far more questions than there are answers.

Two types:
One with a cranial capacity within the scope of modern human (1300 ccm – 1450 ccm) and thus attributable to head binding–you can “cone” the skull but you can’t really increase the cranial capacity, only marginally.
Second with a cranial capacity well above the normal human margin (1700 ccm – 2500 ccm).
It may be surmised that the first type tried to “copy” the second type.
Some other differences: Type one — the cranial sutures are the same as modern human, but deformed.
Type two — The sutures morphologically differ, often parietal and temporal bone sutures are fused/missing.
Alien? Unlikely. Possibly another type of human that had some disadvantage and couldn’t compete with a better adapted modern human (a repeat of HSS and HS-Neanderthal encounter) and is extinct. Larger cranium does not equal larger mental/intellectual capacity. The coneheads must have some quality, though, that compelled our regular human types to imitate them in many cultures.
There are, though, several known skulls that “do not belong” and are very difficult to fit even in a very broadly defined “freak” type category.
