Gun Buyback Program in Deadly NJ City Nets Over 1,000 Firearms, Breaks Record

Camden, N.J., Cash for Guns Program Brings in Massive Amount of Firearms, Is Sandy Hook the Reason?

Guns pile up on tables at a press conference where Camden, N.J., Mayor Dana Redd and New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced a record breaking weekend for the state’s cash-for-guns program. (AP)

Days after a deadly shooting in Newton, Conn., that left 26 people dead, including 20 children, a state-sponsored cash-for-guns program held on Friday and Saturday in Camden, N.J., one of America’s deadliest cities, brought in 1,137 guns, easily beating 2009′s previous record of 700.

“A lot of people said they don’t want the guns around the house now,” state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said Tuesday as he announced the results of the buyback program.

“Let me be clear,” Chiesa added, “I am not suggesting that a buyback such as this could have prevented the shooting in Newtown, which was a cowardly act, nor am I suggesting that gun buybacks are some sort of magic solution to the complex and multi-faceted problem of violence in our society.”

“But we have to keep forging ahead using all of the strategies at our disposal.”

An assortment of firearms were traded in including a few sawed-off shotguns, a couple of rusty WWII-era British rifles, and an elephant-gun. (AP)

People traded in rifles, pistols, sawed-off shotguns, a few rusty WWII-era British rifles, an elephant-gun (really), and five fully automatic weapons, according to reports. About 90 percent of the firearms traded in were in working condition.

“Many were illegal weapons under state laws; some were so-called community guns stashed around neighborhood,” the Associated Press notes.

The South Jersey Times provides the details:

… it was revealed Tuesday by the attorney general that many of the “long guns” turned in to authorities over the weekend had been used to kill Camden city police officers.

Among the arsenal presented in a press conference were five fully-automatic assault weapons, including two Intratec TEC-DC9 — commonly known as a TEC-9 — and an Uzi 9mm submachine gun.

Also collected were two Chinese SKS assault rifles — one with bayonet — a 10-gauge double-barreled elephant shotgun, hundreds of semi-automatic weapons, dozens of sawed-off shotguns and piles upon piles of revolvers and other handguns.

“We heard that there were a number of gun owners on Saturday who had publicly said, in light of the situation that had just occurred in Connecticut, they wanted to turn in their weapons,” said Paul Loriquet, a Camden police department spokesman, in an interview.

The state plans to destroy the stash of firearms.

Twice an many weapons were traded in on Saturday than on Friday, according to state officials.

“The state had $110,000 in cash to give to those who turned in guns, along with $6,000 in gift cards left over from a previous program,” the AP notes.

“At 2 o’clock,” said Chiesa, “we were out of money.”

The program was so inundated with takers that they soon ran out of money. (AP)

After the money ran out, state workers resorted to offering IOUs worth nearly $40,000.

“Individuals were allowed to turn in up to three weapons and were paid up to $250 for each of them,” the AP report adds.

Here’s a video of the gun stash [via Tim Hawk/South Jersey Times]:

Although more than a thousand guns were traded for cash between Friday and Saturday, Camden authorities say there’s still an untold number of firearms stashed throughout crime-ridden the city.

Still, any “gun taken off the street is worth the effort,” said Camden Mayor Dana Redd. “We know the community is excited for these kinds of efforts — we had attempted a similar event last year, but this year is has picked up quite a lot.”

She added: “I’m sure there are other guns still out there we would like to get in another buyback.”

Camden, with a population of 77,000, has more than 700 people on parole, 600 registered sex offenders, and has suffered 67 homicides in 2012.

      “a 10-gauge double-barreled elephant shotgun”

10-gauges were generally used for duck hunting, especially the multiple barrel configurations. Shoot an elephant with a 10-gauge and prepare to be trampled under foot by a semi-ticked off elephant. A 4 bore or a 2 bore, properly, were the correct choices for “elephant gun”. Or a nitro express. Maybe somebody, somewhere, tried to hunt an elephant with a 10 gauge, but as he likely lacks descendents due to being trampled, we’ll never know.

Seriously, what fool would use a 10 gauge?

Make it condition that they take a sign that says ” Criminals – For your convenience I traded my guns for a gift card” and put it in a window at their home.

Most likely they traded in the crap that is on those tables so they can get some cash to buy some better firearms.

My question is if the people who turned these guns in had to show ID or was able to stay anonymous. If they were allowed to just turn the guns in without giving a name or showing ID then it would give a criminal a perfect time to turn in a gun that was used in a crime, get money for it, and know that it now won’t be traced back to them and they don’t have to be worried about being charged especially in a murder. Lets be honest we all know the government will not check each one of these guns to see if they were used in a crime.

Cash is always better to have on hand than a firearm which increases criminal charges if caught being possessed by a felon or someone selling drugs.

I don’t own a gun, don’t want a gun but I sure want every law abiding citizen to be able to have the RIGHT TO BARE ARMS. I know this about guns: THE FOUNDERS were FOR THE RIGHT TO BARE ARMS and Hitler, Stalin, Mao and OBAMA ARE AGAINST the Right to Bare Arms.

Gun control is part of the agenda creating a people so dumbed down they not only want cradle to grave government care but they can’t exist without it – can’t critically think, they can’t serve on juries competently and can’t vote intelligently. Useful idiots for the state. Mindless little, robot zombies spouting the leftist line and not even understanding how they are being used being trained by cadres of intellectuals who want to drive this culture in a direction designed to destroy it:

This is amazing. Criminals turn in guns that they STOLE from legal owners, and the cops pay them for it!

Hell, for $250 per gun, I can make a profit buying a NEW gun at Dicks and turning it in!

And Camden, NJ is a broke city where they laid off most of the police due to “lack of funds.” (ONLY cops got cut, no city administrators, cause they just can function without them!) Yet apparently, they can afford $250k to buy back guns and then spend more money to have them destroyed.

They should have also handed out “gun free zone” signs for people to post in their yards …

These are probably all old unneeded guns because they have others that are better and they wanted to get some cash for them. These guns will probably end up in Mexico. Sorry for the Skepticism but that’s the way it is with this government. This won’t help anything. If these were the only guns in the households then watch how the crime rate goes up.

They got 1100 guns and only 2 Chinese SKS’s? That’s kind of surprising. That one of them had a *gasp* bayonet on it is not. Many of them have bayonets that are not removable. Well, not without a screwdriver at least.

Is there any chance I could buy back the bought back M1 Carbine on top of the pile? $250 is a good deal on one of those. As well as some of the handguns pictured.

      @Termyt

Was you scared when you saw that bayonet on the end of that SKS rifle?

Did it make you cringe and flinch in fear and loathing and cause bad dreams?

I seen the krag, it’s sporterized but a few parts off of it would bring more than what they were probably paid. Also who the hell would go on a shooting rampage with 30-40 krag ammo?

Quick turn in that weapon that you used to murder that crack dealer rival. No questions asked. Go out and buy a fresh one with the cash!

I would say 95 % of these were probably stolen guns any way…they should check serial #’s and get them back to their rightful owners…they won’t…

I am sure that some of these guns were turned in due to CT shooting, but this not a new program and I am sure the drug dealers in that area had a booming business until l-much of that money was spent on drugs. I am sure that the gun stashes where culled out. This was also an easy way to get guns used in crimes out of circulation where they can not be used as evidence. The story did not state it but I am sure that there is some sort of amnesty associated with the turn in of these guns.

It’s amazing what a few massacres can do for a political agenda huh? People give up their guns because some kids were slaughtered and by giving up their guns you’re somehow more safe? Just another facet of the transformed Amerika brought to you by Barry Soetoro and his propagandists ie so called journalists. Milk it for all it’s worth you vultures.

Oh wait they say alot of these these were illegal? Great. Who has illegal guns around? Criminals. Drug dealers. Crack-heads. Remind me not to visit any of these areas any time soon.. Is this another ‘stimulus’? It appears the police have acted stupidly… Who funded this or is this Obama money?

A good chance of that I’d say. They’d probably get the same response if they were buying copper, but most of the street lights would not be working afterward.

Can’t we just sedate all 300 million+ Americans? Maybe lobotomize the really stubborn cases?

I’m fed up with the drama and competitive suffering from dumb-ass thought leaders. Enough already.

What I want to know is are they going to check if they were stolen and return them to the rightful owners? If not then they should be sued.
