Gun control seems to be the issue on many pundits’ minds following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. While Americans remain divided on the legalities, intriguing results are observed when people of faith are asked to weigh in on the handling of firearms. In August, TheBlaze reported on a study that attempted to get at the heart of the matter — one that is important to revisit as the nation prepares to debate this issue on a grand scale.
With faith leaders poised to play a role in the discussion, understanding where different religious cohorts and denominations stand will showcase what can be expected as the contention heats up. On Sunday, just two days after the tragic shooting, Washington National Cathedral dean, the Very Rev. Gary Hall, pledged to take on the pro-gun lobby.
During a morning sermon, he told more than 1,000 faithful in attendance that fighting for stricter firearm control is necessary.

“Everyone in this city seems to live in terror of the gun lobby,” Hall said. “But I believe the gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby.”
Not every person of faith is on board with this notion, though. A study by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and Religion News Service (RNS) earlier this year found that people of divergent faiths — mainly the Catholic, Protestant and evangelical traditions — have diverse views on gun control.
Conducted in early August, the polling found that 52 percent of the nation wants stricter gun laws, with 44 percent does not. But when it comes to Catholics and evangelicals, the differences over firearm control are even more notable.
While 62 percent of Catholic adherents want stricter laws on the matter, only 35 percent of white evangelical Protestants agree (and 42 percent of white mainline Protestants). White evangelicals are also much more likely to believe that people should be able to carry concealed firearms in churches and places of worship.
As for black protestants, a past 2011 ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 71 percent would tighten laws if possible. In an interview with RNS News earlier this year, the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest, noted some of the reasons why Catholics may favor greater restrictions.
“Catholics may congregate more in urban centers and may be more exposed to violent crimes than people in other parts of he country,” he explained, going on to note that traditional acceptance of law as the will of the people might also contribute to support for stricter gun regulations.
Differences over views on the most effective ways to prevent mass shootings are also worth noting. It seems, like on many other fronts, that the American public as a whole is divided. Here are some of the methods for reducing gun crime, as cited by the general population (as per RNS News):
– 27 percent of respondents said stricter gun control would help.
– 22 percent cited better mental health screenings and support for those who want guns.
– 20 percent argued for a greater emphasis on God and morality in school and society.
– 14 percent want stricter security at public gatherings.
– 11 percent said allowing more private citizens to carry guns for protection is the answer.

The table, below, showcases these same results among White evangelicals, White mainstream Protestants, minority Christians, Catholics and the unaffiliated. (Photo Credit: Christianity Today/PRRI)
Digging beneath these numbers, though, religious differences can, once again, be observed. Christianity Today has more about this dynamic, providing deeper understanding of the ideological differences than exist among faith cohorts:
Only 8 percent of white evangelical Protestants said “stricter gun control laws and enforcement” are the most important solution, whereas 19 percent said “better mental health screening and support.” A plurality (36%) chose a third option: “Put more emphasis on God and morality in school and society.”
Meanwhile, a plurality (41%) of minority Christians favor focusing on gun control, whereas 20 percent favor focusing on mental health. Only 14 percent favor focusing on God and morality.
Certainly, some of the sample sizes presented here are small — and data for Catholics broken down by ethnicity is not available. But, at the least, what can be surmised is that people of different faith groups, for a variety of reasons, disagree on this timely issue.

Dec. 20, 2012 at 7:35amO LORD God, dear heavenly Father, I pray that you would just send your Holy Spirit down to give knowledge and understanding to those who are confounded by worldly views. Dear LORD that the truth of your word might be manifested to them that say they are believers, yet are without understanding. Dear God I pray that those who are lost might be touched in their hearts and convicted by your Word; that the only way to salvation is through the belief and acceptance of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, who died in our place for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day; was seen of many for forty days, before ascending into heaven; and now sits, at the right hand of the Father; as mediator on our behalf for the forgiveness of our trespasses’. Dear God I pray that you would put it in our hearts to pray for our human enemies, that we always look not upon the human side of strife we face, but that the true battle is against forces in this world we cannot see: those which were spoken of by the apostle Paul in, Ephesians 6:12. God I pray that you would be with our chosen representatives and our president today, that their hearts and minds be opened to the truth when making decisions about things in this country. Dear God that they would see; that though they claim that morality can’t be regulated, yet every law is based on someone’s view of morality, being humanly minded rather that spiritually minded they err and offend the word of God.

Specifically what makes you think the evangelicals are on the wrong side of the debate?
The evangelicals are NOT using their guns to rob banks or murder.
It is NOT the evangelicals who are endeavoring to be a burden to others. The evangelicals I know would rather pay attention to their own work and not be a burden to others.
True Evangelicals avoid replacing God with government because they know that those who barter for another god will have multiplied sorrows and NO amount of money, including what belongs to others can pay the price to escape the worlds sorrows.
Why should the liberties of freemen be compromised because of the destructive actions of the ungodly? Why should freemen pay for the bad?

Dec. 20, 2012 at 6:01amI am a Catholic, and all of the Catholics I know oppose gun regulation of any kind. The people I know are smart enough to realize that it is how we have allowed the secular society to poison the minds of the last 2 generations by glorifying death. They have made our kids into killing machines who have no respect for life. Parents don’t respect life and approve of over 4000 children to be murdered everyday in this country. No outcry there. The weapons are not at at fault. Stupid people are at fault.

They’re big, loud, impossible to conceal, kind of expensive to replace and get way too much attention from investigators. Plus, how on Earth do you wield them one handed? That’s like something out of a bad action movie.
Plus, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Evangelicals and Mormons don’t really see eye to eye. But if you actually paid attention instead of ranting worse than Brian the Dog maybe you would have actually learned something here. Dec. 20, 2012 at 5:09amI wonder what Jesus would say if he walked in on his followers not only supporting guns, but supporting guns in their place of worship? I bet he would be horrified. It is beyond me how someone could claim to be a follower of Christ and, at the same time, support violence and bigotry.
Also, why did they feel the need to mention race in this article? If you want to talk about how different sects of Christianity view gun control, that’s fine–but race has nothing to do with it. You aren’t even trying to be subtle with your racism anymore, are you?

In no way is Jesus a pacifist. Jesus gave Himself for us. If Jesus wanted to He could have called on any number of His angels to deliver Him. His angels are enumerable and as I recall just one angel slayed 185,000 who were attacking His own.
His disciples had swords, and with the exception of Peter cutting of the servants ear which Jesus promptly healed, they did not misuse their swords.
The end of the Tribulation will not be the first or last time that Jesus will wage war against those who war against Him and His own.
God never told king David and his army to get rid of their swords, but when king David asked and listened, God would tell David how to conduct war and when David was obedient , David would win.
“Turning the other cheek” is only pertains to witnessing the Gospel because Jesus does not force people to choose heaven over hell.

As to bigotry Are you referring to the christian stance against abortion, sodomy, fornication, adultry, murder, and false Gods?
Galatians 5: 19-21
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
I love you enough to tell you the truth. Not in my words but God’s.

Would you call Jesus bigoted for judging between the living and the dead?
A rough explanation of the origin of the word “bigot.” The word bigot originated in the early middle ages from old Germany and means “by God” ( bi Gott). A French king used the word bigot as a negative reference to the Normans who chose to reverence and serve God and not the French king.
Note how satan twists words, including the word “progressive” when it is just the opposite of progress.

The only one I can honestly say I have not committed is murder. But Because Christ died for my sins, and yours, and every low-lfe on this earth (even murders), he has forgiven every one of them and still does. Not giveing me a license to commit them but the ability to abstain from them. It is his righteousness in me that keeps me in the Way, any works of my own are as filthy rags, and an abomination to the LORD. The key is reading and beleiving his word, every day for the rest of your life, praying always for his mercy and grace which he gives to those who ask. Dec. 20, 2012 at 2:39amI get really frustrated about the “gun issue”! I do not own a gun (I should–single, in a very rural setting, taking care of over 500 animals by myself, just to protect the grazing small stock I should have one).
But this is not a “religious” issues, this is an issue of demographics. If you live in a city you generally think of yourself as not “needing” a gun–cops on your doorstep.
If you live in the country you NEED a gun! We have packs of dogs, coyotes, those who look to ransack and/or rob secluded places, meth labs, city criminals who come to the country for quick “pickings,” etc. (pun intended).
In Texas and in the western U.S., in the countryside most carry guns. In the cities of Houston, Dallas, etc., not so much.
And I do agree, “gun free zone” have set up the “fish in a barrel” syndrome.
This is one Catholic who did NOT vote for OB, who believes that the second amendment is fine just the way it is and that we DO NOT need more gun control, and who believe we should be following the Constitution to the letter, while helping the least of us to be able to take care of and support themselves (and right now I’m far below the U.S. poverty level myself, not on “handouts,” just “tighten the belt and cut back.

Dec. 20, 2012 at 12:18pmIt was the “Crosses” fault that Jesus was crucified…is the same logic to be applied to removing guns…..
HATRED: it was the hatred that fueled the crucifiction and hatred in the shooters heart that killed those children. The tool or method can always be replaced with another by “the hater” as seen throughout history. What needs to be identified and extracted is evil, hatred, jealousy, envy, competition, entitlement, spoiledness, etc….and with a country thriving and operating completely on the principals of evil from the government downward… I know, I know sounds pretty bad but how did the election go and what is the number one theory promoted by the government “Class warfare” Hatred of rich, jealousy, envy, entitlement, corruption, etc….You will have every evil thing including murder.
The “christians” (just like the jews) re-elected evil whether by voting demoncrat or staying home.

Dec. 20, 2012 at 12:49pm“Catholics may congregate more in urban centers and may be more exposed to violent crimes than people in other parts of the country,” When are they going to see the fallacy in their argument? “Catholics congregate in urban centers”… (with the toughest gun control) “and may be more exposed to violent crimes”..so they need, uh…more gun control. Yeah, that’s it.

Dec. 20, 2012 at 12:05amOne more reason why Catholics can’t be trusted.
A majority of Catholics voted for Obama in 08 and ’12. Man-made religion turns off your brain. Christ, and Christ alone gives clarity of mind.

Dec. 20, 2012 at 1:17amIts clear that Evangelicals are becoming the extremist fringe. Maybe the Evangelical pastors should stop taking the blood money from the NRA and other merchants of death and instead care about the children in their flock.

Going over your post, as a member of the NRA, I don’t think the money that I give them they are then giving to our Evangelical pastors I think they have better things to spend the money on……Since when do you care about children? Or do you only care about the ripe ones, the ones that make it out of the womb, is that it?……. Your dream is coming true, you are getting your secular society, look in the mirror to find the cause of our problems………..Notice the 36% figure on Evangelicals on “put more emphasis on God and morality in schools and society” Evangelicals get it, it’s not a chunk of steel thats Evil it’s in the hearts of some people, that’s what has to be changed, your young, maybe someday you’ll get it. God Bless friend

Dec. 20, 2012 at 12:03amYou forgot to call us racist, xenophobic, homophobic, bigoted, hate-mongering Nazis.
You’re losing your touch.
Maybe someday you’ll talk like a grown up and actually debate the issues, instead of, you know, name-calling.
How old are you anyway?
