WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — President Barack Obama is launching an administration-wide effort to curb gun violence, underscoring the growing political consensus over tightening gun restrictions following the horrific massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obama is tasking Vice President Joe Biden, a longtime gun control advocate, with spearheading the effort. In remarks from the White House on Wednesday, Obama will outline a process for pursuing policy changes following the school shooting, though he is not expected to call for specific measures.

Obama has turned to Biden in the past to take a role in high-profile policy initiatives, such as efforts to seek a deficit-reduction compromise with congressional Republicans in 2011.

Biden’s mission – to coordinate a process among government agencies to formulate policies in the wake of the Newtown shootings – comes just days after an event that appears to have generated a national outcry for greater efforts to stem gun violence.

The president has vowed to use “whatever power this office holds” to safeguard the nation’s children after Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed at the school by a gunman carrying an arsenal of ammunition and a high-powered, military-style rifle.

The White House sees some urgency in formulating a policy response to the shooting, even as Obama and his top aides are consumed with averting the “fiscal cliff” before tax hikes and spending cuts take effect in January. The incident has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some fear that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

Many pro-gun lawmakers also have called for a greater focus on mental health issues and the impact of violent entertainment. Obama also prefers a holistic approach, with aides saying stricter gun laws alone are not the answer.

“It’s a complex problem that requires more than one solution,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday. “It calls for not only re-examining our gun laws and how well we enforce them, but also for engaging mental health professionals, law enforcement officials, educators, parents and communities to find those solutions.”

Still, much of the immediate focus after the shooting is on gun control, an issue that has been dormant in Washington for years. Obama expended little political capital on gun issues during his first term, despite several mass shootings, including a movie theater attack in Aurora, Colo., in the midst of this year’s presidential campaign.

The White House has begun to signal that Obama may be more proactive on gun issues following the murders of the elementary school youngsters, ages 6 and 7.

Carney said Obama was “actively supportive” of legislation to reinstate a ban on assault-style weapons that expired in 2004. The president long has supported a ban, but exerted little effort to get it passed during his first term. Obama also would support closing a gun show loophole allowing people to buy arms from private dealers without background checks and would be interested in legislation limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines, Carney said.

The policy process Obama was announcing Wednesday was expected to include input from the departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services. The heads of those agencies met with Obama at the White House on Monday.

  A slick political move. Creating another situation where adults will have to step up and at least have a discussion regarding what can be done to address the US embarrassing crime rates, particularly as it relates to gun violence. It will expose the children in congress who don’t want to or can’t participate in adult intelligent discussion. The Allen West’s of the world who speak merely to feed the angry mob and hear themselves talk. Thank God that despite a republican legislature that tweaked his congressional district to insure his re-election…. a majority of adults in Florida sent him packing. Thank goodness there are still more rational adults than ideological driven children in this country.

National outcry?

The outcry has been to empower the teachers to carry guns, a la Ron Paul’s legislation that was introduced 3 years ago.

This as a profession hit job and Adam Lanza was the patsy.

I’ll believe that sooner than I’ll believe that the inconsistencies of this story make any sense.

  My husband called it as soon as he heard the news. But he shared his thoughts to another friend (whom I thought would have agreed) and got called crazy and the friend couldn’t believe we would think such things!! Why is it we can see straight through these situations and our DA pres, but others are so blinded. I just don’t understand.

  It is definitely possible it was a government ordered hit. I would not be surprised if this massacre is the beginning of a liberal campaign of more child massacres. One thing is certain though. The suspect that supposedly shot the children was a liberal human being. To the typical progressive this massacre is a victory for there cause and the child victims are to be considered just late term abortions.

I am shocked that Obama did not take this on as his on personal crusade. I mean- look at the huge success he had in curbing gun violence in Chicago! As a community organizer he made it Job #1 to make the streets safe for those in the community. He was a devoted state congressman and then a US Senator and in all that time he had a laser like focus on ending the violence in his hometown of Chicago. Since he did such an outstanding job and the gun ban is working so well in Chicago I am shocked that he is handing it off to Biden. I guess it would have cut into his golf time…

These Marxists must think that this is the right time to make their move to grab the guns, beginning with the “assult weapons”. The assult weapon is the person who uses it, not the gun he uses. If they get legislation on this, the ball will be rolling and be picking up momentum for confiscation of all our personal protection.

Why doesn’t Obama seek a ban on Hollywood making violent movies or, for that matter, ban all guns in any movie? While he’s at it, why doesn’t he seek a ban violent video games?

These two items probably have more to do with violent killing sprees by young people than the tool they choose to use.

Sorry, really bad decision. We need NO MORE laws about guns, Enforce the ones we have now and would solve many of the problems. Commit a crime with a gun, mandatory jail time. Shoot someone, 25 years min sentence. Carrying w/o license, 5 years. NO parole, NO probation, if this was in place would resolve most of gun problems. Hey, might just solve the jobs market, construction industry, building all those prisons!!! Ok, now you will say how about this case with CT. Totally, different. 1st, bushmaster is NOT AN ASSAULT rifle. looks like an M4 or M16, but semi auto.. AND did this kid use that, NO! Was in the trunk, probably as a back up, but still, not used. Stole his mothers guns, (that she should have never had since his condition was very bad) after he violently shot her in face, ( he was “really” pissed at her by doing her in the face ). Entered the school with absolutely no resistance. Oh that’s right a school is a gun safe zone. Hello, maybe that’s why everyone of these are committed in a gun safe zone. Talk to anyone in AZ, TX that is allowed to carry, (Legally), very little of this and criminals know they may be confronted by a legally armed citizen that will protect themselves. Stop the rhetoric, think, look at the whole picture and check facts before opening your mouth. Trust me, when tragedy comes your way, you will be thankful me, or someone who is legally allowed and trained to carry will be nearby. Or you can just call the local PD and wait for 5 minutes !

  Ah, some of us are “behind enemy lines” and have no legal means of CCW, even with CCWs from other states. Before you demand a five year imprisonment of your fellow American gun owners for doing what is moral and nessisary to protect themselves, you should consider the ethical and moral aspects of the law violated; in this case, written by the tryanical progressive-statists in the once great state of California, carried out in consperacy with big city statist Sheriffs.

I had a CWC while living in PA and believe every state should allow law-abiding citizens to own and carry (if they so choose) Had the Principle and teacher’s been armed, deaths would have been lower. Well Biden, this should be the easiest task you have been assigned.

Eliminate gun-free zones (schools, fed/state buildings, progressive states/cities), require every teacher and administrator to be armed, allow all college campus students and faculty to carry their guns.

It won’t stop someone bent on cowardice killing, but will shift the balance of power away from the bad guys and give the good guys a chance. A chance nobody had in Ft. Hood, Aurora, CT, Chicago, DC, etc.

But really, if he wanted to protect the kids, arm the teachers. We did it with airline pilots cause we already trusted them to fly us. When it is the kids, why not trust those responsible for molding their minds to protect them and themselves?

  The Left can not feel that they are losing the high moral ground by advocating gun bans. But, they are. The difference between right and wrong are being blurred or even reversed. No one expects the police to fight well armed criminals with means that are substantially inferior to the the arms that the police are likely to encounter being used against them. (California possibly excepted) The ethical problem with limiting weapons for the police should be obvious. What is not obvious is that the same moral argument for parity with criminals applies to civilians. Why should I have a clip limited to ten rounds while the criminal has a thirty round clip? Why should I have to face a criminal without approximate parity at least? In my state it is illegal to “go armed” with a knife with a blade over four inches or even a club as well as a handgun without a permit.

  They are not outraged, because gun control doesn’t effect them, they are the number one violator of the laws in the first place. Any law infringing on the right to bear arms is illegal and should be rejected by true citizens. The people who write these laws should be removed from their positions.

  When was the last tome someone walked into a school in chicago, DC or NYC and murdered 20 6-7 year olds. I might be bold to say that gang violence contributes to those 3 cities death toll. Infighting, drug turf etc. these were kids in school that have done nothing to anyone. Arent mixed up in crime or anything like that.

  He cut the 180 million funding for school security. Gave 20 billion in fighter jets to the Mbro who just told Christians join them or die. We were founded as a Christian nation and the Godless liars and deniers can go to hell. I seem to remember a story where Gods children were told worship our way or go into the fiery furnace. So, Babylon is alive and well in DC and the middle east. 20 billion not arming our enemies would have provided more security in the schools than they would ever need.
