Our Facinating Interview with a Prepper Leader: He Responds to ‘Demonization’ of Movement After CT Shooting and Explains What It’s Really About

If you hadn’t heard the term “prepper” before last Friday, you likely have now. That’s because the mother of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza, who was killed by her 20-year-old, has been identified as a “prepper” by the media, based on the items police found inside her home and reports from those who knew her.
In light of the tragic mass-murder, some reports have said preppers are “the latest variant of that age-old American stalwart, the ‘survivalist’” with an image that’s “not good.” Others went as far to say that “weapon-loving” Nanzy Lanza “created a monster.” But is that really what these “preppers” are? We decided to get the reaction of one of the movement’s leaders. And according to him, the characterization of him and other like him has been a “deomnization” that is flatly untrue.

Phil Burns is co-founder of the American Preppers Network. In an exclusive interview with TheBlaze, he described the caricature of preppers as representing very little regarding what preppers are all about.
“It’s just brutal right now,” Burns said. “I have a community to look out for and to protect. This is my passion and I don’t like seeing it demonized.
“‘Preppers’ are being used as a scapegoat right now,” he continued.
When Burns first found out about the association of Nancy Lanza as a prepper and saw the aerial photo taken of her house, he said he wasn’t surprised.
“It didn’t seem illogical to me,” he said. “She lived in the country, in a big house […] it seemed logical that she might be a prepper.”

It was when he began receiving a slew of requests from the media and seeing articles that equated the term “prepper” with “survivalist” and other more extreme accusations that he realized what this association could mean for the movement, which has seen a growth of interest in recent years.
What a “Prepper” Really Means — and the Different Categories

Phil Burns, co-founder of the American Preppers Network. (Photo: Phil801.com)
What many might not realize is that there are subsets of preppers — subsets Burns said might have some similarities to the prepper movement as a whole but that have different intentions: there are survivalists, doomsday preppers and conspiratorial preppers.
But the majority who consider themselves preppers — if they would even think to give themselves the formal designation — subscribe to a philosophy that is nothing like those of the more extreme variety that have been featured lately on reality TV shows and by those getting ready for the Mayan apocalypse.
“To us in particular, preparedness is about living a self-reliant lifestyle . . . It’s about, in a disaster situation, having a philosophy that is not we sit around and wait for FEMA to show up. Preppers come together, help each other out and make sure everyone is provided for.”
It’s this community aspect — taking care of one’s self and family and then the community, in that order — that Burn’s said sets them apart from survivalists.
“We don’t have an isolation mentality,” he said, unlike the survivalists with whom the majority of preppers are confused.
Believing them all to be cut from the same cloth, Burns said, comes from ignorance. It’s sort of like seeing someone two-step and seeing someone tango. As Burns put it, they’re both dancing but if you don’t know the nuances of each dance, you might consider them the same thing.
Prep for “TEOTWAWKI”
Being a prepper means being ready for a disaster situation that would cause the world as you know it to end, Burns said. But this does not mean an apocalyptic situation. In fact, the American Preppers Network doesn’t allow discussion of the apocalypse or conspiracy theories.
The end of the world as you know it (or TEOTWAWKI) could be everything from a natural disaster — like the wildfires in Utah that Burns and other fellow preppers in the area helped to stymie in various capacities this fall — to personal tragedies, like when Burn’s daughter, 2-years-old at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia.
Just three and a half years ago, the father of eight children said this is when the world as he knew it ended. He and his wife went from at one moment thinking their daughter just had the flu to wondering if she could die within 24 hours.
Once they found out the type of leukemia she had was a less threatening, treatable kind, the Burns’ lost everything to help her. He had a successful business and was investing in another. They had a farm house in a nice area with land and fancy cars.
“For two and a half years, we lived off all the preps we set aside,” Burns said. “Had I not been prepared, I would not have been able to care for her at the level she needed.
“We lost a lot of stuff — house, farm, vehicles — but we didn’t lose our daughter.”
How a Prepper Sees Gun Ownership
It is actually because he and his wife came close to losing their child that he feels like he can understand some of the pain the family of victims in Connecticut are experiencing. But he said he can’t agree with the reaction some are having with regard to gun ownership rights.
“I understand the emotional reaction and being upset that preppers own firearms,” he began. “I would say I get that, but the commitment of APN, preppers in general, me specifically and the preppers I know personally, our goal is to be within the confines of the law at all times.”
For preppers, the purpose of owning a firearm runs the gamut, but many have them from home protection and hunting.
Burns said he advocates for gun owners to receive safety training, which would include proper storage and keeping the firearm safe before, during and after use. He later said this too should include medical training to treat gunshot wounds in the event that they might happen.
“All of these things are just part of a preparedness mindset,” he said.
When it comes to having a firearm in the house with children of any age, Burns said his philosophy is to make it “not an exotic experience.” Burns said he feels it’s negligent for parents — gun owners or not — to not teach their children about proper gun safety.
Burns, who is an NRA-trained safety officer, provided an example: two teenagers offer to help an elderly woman clean her garage. While doing so they open a desk drawer; inside it is a pistol. Swinging the firearm around inappropriately and pretending to fire, someone accidentally gets shot.
To Burns, if people aren’t exposed to firearms ever “it’s literally impossible to be safe with it.”
In other words, it’s about being prepared. And you don’t have to be a “prepper” to accept that.

A person who liked guns should of had a buy back gun program and then resell them to those that want to exercise their 2nd Amendment right. Now those guns are out of circulation.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 5:02pmAmazing times we live in. Our parents and grandparents who lived through disasters, world wars and the great depression who put aside food stocks and survival equipment were considered prudent and concerened with the well being and security of their family and neighbors. These days, it seems that if you dont put blind faith in the government to maintain a steady supply of goods and services you are the object of suspicion and suspect of malevolent behavior. If youv’e never been without basic necessities, it might be easier to dismiss the idea that there might not always be stocked shelves in the grocery store, fuel for your vehicles, water that appears every time you turn a faucet handle, or flipping a switch and having electricity at your command. I say that if you don’t prepare for hard times during times of plenty, you have no one to blame but yourself when you find there is no food to buy, no fuel to buy, no electricity and money means nothing. At that point, guns will be the only security for the individual to keep what they have; a necessary addition to the self-reliance checklist.

What I mean by that is that whenever something happens, they are the ones there speaking in reverent tones, soothing language, trying to make it all seem better. Who gave them the authority and right to speak to us like they are our parent, priest, pastor or rabbi?
The Left is a religion and when you view it that way everything about what they say and do will make better sense. Its all FEELINGS based, all from the HEART part as Jones put it.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 5:12pmThat is why it is important to have like-minded neighbors and town.
“They” as in the government already know who the “preppers” are, most of us are expecting it; Membership card to COSTCO or SAM’s, NRA membership, use your debit card at the grocery store or pharmacy, buy anything from Cheaper than Dirt or any online retailer, Discount card for a book store, Food Insurance etc, large quantities of seeds from a store, belong to this website, stream talk radio on your computer, visit a website that advocates self-reliance………..it is nearly impossible to avoid a record of your purchases and activities these days for anyone who really wants to know. The same “laws” that allow them to track the purchases of suspected drug manufactures and backtrack salmonella outbreaks will be used to identify people as “Horders”, what’s done can’t be undone.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 7:38pmI agree with AxelPhantom on this.
Everybody has very different scenarios that describe their living situation so, as in all things, application and execution must be adapted to your exact situation. When approached properly, your community can become your greatest asset as a Prepper. This community may be the block/street you live on, the other people on your floor, everyone on your lane, etc. I have lived in all of those situations.
Approaching them individually and beginning a discussion about the natural disaster that is the highest on your Risk Assessment then leading it into “what would we do if X happened” can open the minds of even the most liberal neighbors. Bringing them together to begin discussing and planning for X will naturally branch into all the areas you should be discussing – with, perhaps, some directional poking from you.
As you come together as a group, suddenly you will live surrounded by people you know and care about. Then it is simple to get everyone committed to working on their family preps as well as assignments of community preps. Before long at all, a group like this can easily have the 3 basics; food, water and shelter covered. After a few meetings when everyone is catching the spirit of what you’re working to accomplish, bring up looting and security. Before you know it, THEY will be working out plans to blockade and protect your community area.
You’ll have a built in team with an interest in sticking together.

We are being set up and thats clear to see. It does not take much with this admin to have the hounds of hell barking at your door demanding YOU CHANGE.
Its almost like…why prep then if your going to get screwed in the end anyways? The only way and its a slim one, is to be so underground that you escape detection or…OR have a tight knit coalition on your side. Like I said…slim!
This is more fodder for the cause of having everyone take a certain mark or carry a certain ID and without it, you will be locked out of the economy that they control. Preps or not, no one can manage through this unless of course your so deep underground and off the net…and already there.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 1:42pmPreppers, for the most part, are the people who can help in any kind of tragedy. They are the ones who have food and water. They are the ones with 1/2 tank of gas so they can use their vehicles. They are the ones who will be clear headed in an emergency due to mental rehearsal with options already thought out. They are the ones who know how to use their firearms safely. In short, when everyone else is panicking and stripping the stores of food and supplies and lining up for gas, the preppers will be the ones that already have what they need and won’t be a drag on society.
Why would a prepper want an AR15 or a semi-automatic pistol? If you’ve seen the videos of how people act when they can’t get the Christmas toy they want, then think about how people will act when they don’t have food or water. They act like a mob. You have to be prepared to defend against a mob. Try that with a 6 shot revolver and a double barrelled shotgun and maybe a bolt action rifle with 3 rounds and no ability to reload quickly. You’d be overwhelmed in no time, but if you have a large capacity magazine fed semi-automatic with some spare magazines, you might have a chance. Let’s pray to God that we never have to do that, but if you don’t have something to defend yourself with, then I guess you could pray to God that the mob doesn’t kill you as they are ransacking your food storage.
Finally, I’ve never seen a case in which a prepper shot anyone. Survivalist nuts, yeah, but not p

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 12:43pmA prepper buys a generator, a survivalist knows how to build one.

A prepper stockpiles medicine, a survivalist knows how to make it from native plants.
A prepper has a gun to shoot deer, a survivalist knows how to make shoes out of its hide.
Like I said, the difference is between the ears. Prepping is often about maintaining comfort (lights, refrigeration, having enough to eat), survivalism is about staying alive and being able to renew the supplies that you have stored indefinitely.
Being self reliant does not mean having food stored, you are still reliant upon those stores and thus NOT self-reliant. That is “prepping”. Survivalism is about having the ability to renew necessities indefinitely and being able to share that ability with others.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 1:37pmYou don’t fully understand the prepper movement. We work together as a community. Yes, it is true we store wheat, but we grow it, grind it into flour and bake it in solar ovens. Much better then soaking acorns to remove the tanin (yes, we do know how to forage too). We keep a few chickens, but can and do dress them in 10 minutes or less or are trying to learn. We can set a snare if need be, but I would much rather eat the rabbit I have canned. We plan for short term and long term grid down. But we believe there will be a rebuilding and a year supply will get us through until we figure it out as a community. We can build a generator, but we keep bees to provide honey and know how to turn that honey in to fuel. There is much more to the prepper movement then just hiding in the woods and digging dandelions or grinding cattail roots for our kids food. We know bad people will take our stuff with guns, but not everyone in our groups will have thier food taken, so we have enough wheat stored to grow for the group. Perhaps you should be more open minded.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 2:02pmAxelphantom, Plan B,
Preppers span a huge spectrum of preparation. Some only have some storage food, junk silver coins, water, 1/2 tank of gas, a gun and a getaway plan. That’s probably the minimum I’d call a prepper, but some only have storage food for a month and a gun. I’d call that less than prepared.
Plan B, you’re very prepared and are doing it in layers or stages, depending on what happens. One can prepare for small disruptions in food, water and services without knowing a lot and without a big investment in time and discomfort. If you have the minimum you can get it done with $10,000 or so and some range time to be competent with your firearm. You have invested much more time. That takes away from other things. We need to have preppers who are prepared for smaller disruptions too.
Axelphantom, I’d say the difference between prepper vs. survivalist is more than what you talk about, it is about what you expect to happen. Some survivalists are expecting a complete breakdown of society, hence knowing how to make everything yourself. That knowledge comes with a price. It takes years to learn all that and a lot of time in the field.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 2:10pmHere is the difference based on my own experiences:
My mother lived as a child-refugee during WWII Europe and survived with her mother and sisters on foot (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Germany), for three years in an active war zone with nothing but what they could carry. They were “survivalists”.
My father’s family lived through the Great Depression thanks to being on a farm and having stores of food and the abilty to hunt they never felt starvation. They were “preppers”.
Survivalism takes prepping one step further. What if you must become a refugee with nothing but the clothes on your back, and no help in sight? That is what survivalism accounts for and the differences I see.

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 2:37pmBoth of you are making valid points. I know I would have a very difficult time if I were to have to live on what I could as a refugee. Many would die just from exposure and from lack of physical conditioning. God help us all if it comes to that here in America.
I took many hour of notes from my grandparent who lived in Chicago during the depression, and have stored some of the things they felt where the most important to get by on. I found it quite interesting how many appartment building basements had goats and chickens. But I do understand society has changed quite a bit from the depression years.
I guess one thing I know is if something went bad, I will know I have done my best to take care of my family and teach my children and grandchildren skills that will help them get by, but also impress the value of Faith, Family and that no matter what, just being together is all we need, whether here or knowing we will be together as a family soon in the afterlife.

I guess I have just been at this longer than most and I have taken that next step beyond dependence on the community or group, that was taken care of a decade ago. Now I am truly hoping for the best and planning for the worst and like you, take comfort in knowing that I am doing all I can to ensure the survival of those around me.
Cliff,
I have been at this…well, most of my life. My parents instilled it in me as a child and after their life’s experiences I cannot blame them. I have had a lot of time to learn a lot both in and out of formal school and know enough that there is always a lot more to learn. I hope to never really need either the supplies or the knowledge, but there is comfort in knowing that if something goes “south” at least I have skills to contribute to others who are willing to work hard to make lives better.
I can lose my food, I can lose my land, no one can take away the knowledge in my head that will always be as long as I function properly. What is in your head is the only thing you truly possess and I would rather rely upon it than things that can be taken away.

Bottom Line: Basic needs for the sustaining of life: water, food, clothing, shelter, and protection from ALL predators both animal and human.
As a Society: We live in a fantasy world far away from these basic realities. We have lost the basic skills necessary to accomplish the tasks needed for life. We have chosen to condemn those who choose to do and heep them in a pile of lunies. We waste a fortune on toys, tech, and foolish pleasure but can’t make it more than a week in our homes. We’ve just emerged from an unprecedented (in all of human history) run of peace, prosperity, progress and limitless (so we thought) expansion. It lasted so long that we dreamed it would never end. But life is nothing if not a paradox. Great good comes out of human hardship and conversely (as we can clearly see) out of heady prosperity comes human evil. Out of the depression of the 30s emerged the “Greatest Generation”. Out of the prosperity of modern times came the hippie generation which led to the self absorbed, entitled, spoiled, ignorant, spiritually bankrupt generation that elected the most destructive president in US history. The only possibility remaining, to turn this disaster around and reacquaint ourselves with the truth of our immortal souls is very, very hard times. It can come from any number of directions. Can you see that freight train a-rollin’ down the tracks? Without a major purging, we will continue to descend into evil and stupidity. Exactly.
Only thing is, I don’t believe in continuous un-ending cycles! America will fall and thats for sure! Nothing can stem the tide of the moronic spirit of the times we are faced with. It must play out its hand and it will be ugly to say the least. Once it is spent, the basics, the fundamentals of human existence will come out, they will run their short lived course to be swallowed up by those seeking justice, peace and freedom once again. This could take 70 years as in the case of mother Russia or it could take a 1000 years.
I frankly do not believe we have that much time as I believe in Gods time piece called Israel which says time is a runnin out. This generation shall not pass until ALL these things come to pass. We are that generation whether we like it or not.

It is great to have people who are likeminded. We talk about generators and ham radios. Hold winter campouts with other local groups. Look for a group in your area if you want to meet others who are prepping. They are posted on the Americanpreppersnetwork.com site. If there isn’t one in your area yet, start on! I was surprised how quickly our group grew!! I would say I have become great friends with the members-we have so much in common and you don’t have to prep alone!

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 11:51amYou think the crazy murderous kid in Newtown, Ct., has anything on our politicians? Did you hear that ANOTHER Fast and Furious weapon was found at the site where a female Mexican star was killed in a Mexican drug cartel shootout a few weeks ago? How many have been killed as a result of Gaybama and Holder’s arming of Mexican cartels?
Remember WACO?

How about Ruby Ridge, where the gobblement ended up paying $3.5 to a survivor?
Here it is – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28kvrPXj-6U
And you want to trust “government” with the safety of YOUR family? In Bowers v Devito the Supreme Court Decided that Govt has no duty to protect…but they sure know how to kill them….

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 11:44amI would like the liberals to tell me …. How will you take guns away from the criminals after you take guns away from us law abiding citizens? Please liberals, stop killing Americans with your failed policies. Gun free zones kill people. The Federal government behaves badly. We need to fight back at the state level. States can easily arm teachers with conceal carry immediately. Why do the Democrats think we can solve this problem by playing defense?

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 11:36amIf you’re a “prepper” KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! If no one knows what you have set aside for a disaster, then those same people will not come to you to save them or to take, by force, what you have.
