‘You Are a Dangerous Man…and You Shame Your Country’: CNN Anchor Lashes Out at Gun Lobby Director

CNN’s Piers Morgan on Tuesday went head-to-head with the executive director of a pro-gun organization, at one point calling him a “dangerous man” who brings “shame” to his country in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

Larry Pratt, head of Gun Owners of America, started off his appearance on “Piers Morgan Tonight” by saying America needs to “ban gun control laws that keep people from being able to protect themselves.”

“The problem is not going to go away if we ban this or that gun,” Pratt said. “We’ve tried that, that doesn’t work. Doesn’t even work in England. You have mass murders there all over Europe, there have been mass murderers.”

Morgan said Pratt was talking “complete and utter nonsense” and said the gun murder rates in Britain, Germany or Australia are far lower than that in the U.S. — “75 against 12,000 in Australia.”

Pratt conceded that the gun murder rate in those countries is indeed lower than the U.S., but that the violent crime rate is higher.

“America is not the Wild West that you are depicting. We only have the problems in our cities, and unhappily, in our schools where people like you have been able to get laws put on the books that keep people from being able to defend themselves,” he said. “I honestly don’t understand why you would rather have people be victims of a crime than be able to defend themselves. It’s incomprehensible.”

“You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?” Morgan asked.

Pratt shot back that Morgan was being “morally obtuse,” adding: “You seem to prefer being a victim to being able to prevail over the criminal element. And I don’t know why you want to be the criminal’s friend.”

“What a ridiculous argument. You have absolutely no coherent argument whatsoever,” Morgan said. “You don’t give a damn, do you, about the gun murder rate in America? You don’t actually care. All you care about — ”

Pratt cut in that Morgan was ignoring the facts.

“What we do know is that when you go to an area of the United States where guns are freely available, readily able to be carried legally, there you find our lowest murder rates, lower than the murder rates in Europe. You go to our cities where we have cracked down on guns, and that’s where criminals have a field day,” he said.

Morgan later said he wasn’t arguing about Americans’ rights to defend themselves in the home, but that there is “no use and no justification for these AR-15-type assault weapons.”

“There are these assault weapons which have been used now in movie theaters, in shopping malls, in elementary schools to murder many, many Americans,” he said. “Your only answer, Mr. Pratt, to people that want to get rid of both the magazines and these assault weapons, if I’m not mistaken is to let everybody else have similar weapons. Is that the solution to America’s gun murder problem?

Pratt said Morgan was “talking against self-defense” and “against people being able to protect themselves.”

“Post what happened at Sandy Hook,” Morgan said. “Your answer to this problem of repeated use of this weapon with these high-capacity magazines is to continue letting Americans buy them with impunity, and to not concern yourself with these mass shootings, is that right?”

“The Second Amendment means what it says, and meanwhile, you want to continue laws against self-defense,” Pratt said. “Laws that prohibit self-defense. Laws that prohibit teachers and other faculty, other members of the administration in schools from being able to defend themselves if they have a concealed carry permit. The laws prohibit them right now. We have been lobbying against those laws since they were put on. We will continue to do so, pointing out that that is where the problem is. And for you to support them means that you’re really blind to the role that that plays in enabling murders to operate with impunity.”

Morgan responded that he knows “why sales of these weapons have been soaring in the last few days — it’s down to idiots like you.”

After Morgan thanked Pratt for coming on the show and prepared to go to commercial, Pratt thanked him for the “high-level argument…it’s really good.”

“You know what, you wouldn’t understand the meaning of the phrase high-level argument. You are a dangerous man espousing dangerous nonsense and you shame your country,” Morgan said.

CNN posted the entire segment on its website, minus the last few moments with Morgan’s “shame your country” remark. NewsBusters published an edited version that includes the final moments (scroll):

Pratt is the guy who is on the “Gooffy” Brit’s show standing up for his beliefs. He goes out tomorrow and is personally confronted by his detractors and congratulated by his fellow constitutionalists. You are the anonymous bomb thrower spewing incoherent and illogical BS on one of a couple million blogs. And tomorrow you will go to your dead end job where nobody gives a **** what you think.
BTW There are so few people in Australia ( there are more people in Mexico City) that you would be hard pressed to find a “mass” to kill.

Piers Morgans should be extradited back to England so he can spew his emasculated illogical views in the once great empire that has now devolved into a flexi-sexual socialist cesspool that is so detached from it’s Christian heritage that Islam has planted dozens of Sharia Courts through out the land. A land once occupied with strong upright men and women where now the males are feminized and the females get drunk so they can be sexually defiled by different males leaving them unsuitable for marriage and motherhood as their identity and purpose is being ripped from the lives from faceless globalist forces that will not tolerate a smart, God fearing, independent thinking, self-reliant, physically capable man or woman operating freely in the land that once fought a war against tyranny and finally lost to Marxist sexual degenerates.

The statement that crime rates are lower in states where gun ownership is higher is more conservative, republican made up BS. Look at the actual data in the following. Not the moronic product of dividing crime rate by % of gun ownership. Almost across the board violent crime rate per 100,000 is higher is states that have a higher percentage of gun ownership. In both the Chardon and Newtown shooting the easy access to guns owned and maintained by family members facilitated the actions of a disturbed individual. In both cases the family member should be criminally and civilly liable for their guns not be held under lock and key. It is not a question of criminals vs. law biding citizens as in virtually every mass shooting case the accused had no criminal record. It is very much a matter of easy access to high powered weapons and unlimited ammo. Access needs to be dramatically tightened and every gun should be registered with both the federal and state governments. The registration process should be much tougher with relatively long waiting periods.

      yeah ummm..nice try JCROOK…
The National Academy of Sciences has reviewed hundreds of studies. They found not “a single gun regulation that reduced violent crime or murder.”

The National Center for Policy Analysis found that violent crime decreases when carry-conceal laws are in place. They found that murders “dropped by 8.5 percent, while rapes and serious assaults fell up to 7 percent in states with licensed concealed carry laws. Furthermore, if states without licensed concealed carry would institute it, then 1570 murders, 4180 rapes, and over 60,000 aggravated assaults would not happen each year.”. Sexual assault — Australia’s equivalent term for rape — increased 29.9 percent.

They think they are higher class and more responsible or “better” than the average person so they should be able to protect themselves but we shouldn’t. If they ban guns then these people don’t need to be protected by a gun they have or anyone protecting them has. Their bodyguards can carry a knife to protect them, which will also be eventually banned and on and on.
If criminals obeyed laws they wouldn’t be criminals. Gun laws only affect law abiding citizens rights to own guns. Like rham says “You never let a serious crisis go to waste, so to them this is just an opportunity to exploit these murders and take away our rights. obama is a crappy actor , those fake tears and pauses in his speech don’t fool us, he’s just taking advantage of the situation.

Yes, then the Chinese government can then encourage more edged weapons be exported to the US so crazies can slash & stab instead of shoot their unarmed victims. That’s what crazies in China use in their school and other public attacks…which are at least as common as our mass shootings. The spokespeople have to learn when to mock, when to yell, and when to speak calmly. Just putting up a chart showing X Y and Z will not earn many converts. Ronald Reagan was good at making his opponents look stupid, and getting his message across with both verve and humor when needed. If the debate is to be won then playing nice has to stop. I am a degreed historian, and a Soviet threat expert which gives me extraordinary insight as to what is transpiring in this country at governmental and societal levels. Take your silly English rearend back to England, and remain a “subject” there, or spend some months studying our Bill of Rights, and our amendments to our Constitution.

Give me the facts to the following questions…

      1. How many massacres have been stopped by armed citizens? A massacre being 4+ deaths.

      2. How many stories has the blaze run on the victims and their funerals and showing us who these poor innocents were vs. guncontrol stories?

      3. How does gun control make crime worse?

      4. The killer could have used a knife or a car or a screwdriver to kill. If that is so how come there has never been a massacre where the killer used a knife or car or screwdriver? How come it is always guns?

Well CANARYROTS…we tried a total ban on “assault” weapons for nearly ten years. Guess what? Nothing changed.

Now you tell me little guy….had there been an armed guard at the school last week…would that many children have died? The answer is no. In fact in 2002 at the Appalachian School of Law two students went to their cars after hearing shots fired, got their guns, and helped to restrain the shooter until police arrested him.

The National Academy of Sciences looked at hundreds of studies and found not “a single gun regulation that reduced violent crime or murder.” Do you know why CANARYROTS? Because criminals don’t care about gun laws.

So spare me your puerile questions and demands they’re nothing but the shrill misdirections of a lefty cur.
Oh and you need to update that magical app of yours champ. When has a massacre occured using a knife you demanded?

Chinese teenager with a knife..8 dead.
      http://www.foxnews.com/world/2012/08/02/teen-kills-8-wounds-5-in-china-knife-attack/
      Or this knife attack?
“On 4 August 2010, 26-year-old Fang Jiantang slashed more than 20 children and staff with a 60 cm knife, killing 3 children and 1 teacher, at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong province. Of the injured, 3 other children and 4 teachers were taken to the hospital”.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says the off-duty sergeant, who was working security, heard the gunshots and came running. She saw the gunman coming out of the men’s restroom. The Sheriff’s Office says the gunman did not shoot at her, but his gun was drawn so she opened fire.

That off-duty sergeant, identified as Lisa Castellano, fired four times, wounding the gunman. Only one other person was wounded, a 49-year-old man inside the theater, who was hit by one of the gunman’s shots. Both are expected to recover.

Canada- 1. This is a childish question. How can anyone know what would have been a massacre when someone is stopped before it becomes a massacre.
      2. Simply check the archives section of this website
      3. Read history. The worst crimes perpetrated upon humanity in the last century always follow the implementation of gun control.
      4. I do believe right up there in good ol’ Canada, British Columbia to be exact, you had the Pickton Brothers who sent over 20 prostitutes through a wood chipper after sexually torturing them. And, what about that guy that started beheading helpless people on a bus with a sword a few years back? It was a huge story in Canada. Then you can’t forget all of those dismembered feet that have continued to wash ashore in the greater Vancouver area for years now. It would seem to me that Canada should worry about their own mass murders.

“1. How many massacres have been stopped by armed citizens? A massacre being 4+ deaths.”

You seem to be a few bricks short of the whole edifice. What kind of question is that? If someone prevents a massacre, hopefully there would be no casualties, bare the dropped criminal. Or do you need 4+ casualties for it to count?

“2. How many stories has the blaze run on the victims and their funerals and showing us who these poor innocents were vs. guncontrol stories?”

So, you seem to want stories with victims, the more the merrier, so you can wallow in a faked pity and ostentatious delegated “compassion”, you ghoul.
Blazers would rather see stories where a crime has been prevented, but people of your persuasion are making sure that there is a steady train of victims, so we get a mixed bag.

“3. How does gun control make crime worse?”

Another fallacy. Gun control results in more crimes. It affects only law abiding citizens. Criminals by their nature break laws and gun control does not affect them. They are emboldened, when they know there is no risk of leaving the crime scene with their bodies at the environment temperature, to do more crimes.

“4. The killer could have used a knife or a car or a screwdriver to kill. If that is so how come there has never been a massacre where the killer used a knife or car or screwdriver? How come it is always guns?”

Maybe a short visit to this website might change you opinion …..The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.

In the decade following the party’s election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158million – or more than two every minute.
The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:
The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.
It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.
It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France.
But it is the naming of Britain as the most violent country in the EU that is most shocking. The analysis is based on the number of crimes per 100,000 residents.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677.
There is a word violence chart there Canada is sixth in the world for most violent crimes the US is the best .. This is an article from the UK…….

If an armed security guard were on site, or school officials had concealed carry permits and were allowed to carry on school premises, this whole situation would have been avoided – or at least the victims would have had a fighting chance.

The former claimed 168 lives 19 of which were children under the age of 6. The latter claimed almost 3,000 lives. Tim Mcveighs’ weapon of choice, fertilizer and a Rider truck. LOL…”a massacre being 4+ deaths”. Can you tell me where this number was taken from CANARYROTS? Did a panel of independent judges determine that’s what constitutes a massacre or did you come up with this gem yourself?

Let’s go over to the judges…”well Larry…only 3 died and 123 were wounded to various degrees…sorry..no massacre here”.

What about you judge number 2? “well Larry I have to concur with my fellow judge, even though a few of the 123 may die from their injuries at a later stage, only 3 have died thus far, and the rules say it’s not a massacre unless 4 die..have to say no massacre”

And judge number 3? “Larry I’m just consulting the CANADAROCKS book of massacre criteria….and it clearly says that it must be 4+ to constitute a massacre..now I’m not sure how you can categorize only 3 deaths at the same instance from a single assault, CANADAROCKS believes it’s merely an altercation, but CANADAROCKS is clear..it must be 4+ to be construed as a massacre…and I have to defer to the rule book he gives us..no massacre”.

There you have it ladies and gentlemen…the experts have unanimously confirmed that it must be 4+ deaths to make it a massacre. Anything less than 4+ is just an altercation. Back to Tony in the studio.

Canada – there were two potential mass murders stopped in the last week. They don’t hit your 4+ criteria because they were stopped by an armed citizen. That the whole point. Not to mention that most successful mass murders (including the most recent) have occurred in “gun free” zones where law abiding citizens don’t have a gun to defend themselves.

How does gun control make crimes worse. Studies (US Justice Department & Gary Kleck Florida State Univ) have shown that 1.5- 2 mil people defend themselves with a gun every year. If they don’t have guns, that is 1.5-2 million more crimes each year. That makes crimes worse.

And if you want non-gun mass murders, try the recent killings in China (a knife), or McVeigh in Oklahoma (a bomb), or the 3000 WTC murders. Evil doesn’t need a gun to commit mass murder.

      Canada

Chicago has gun control and 45 murders a month.

In the second world war Japan determined that invading America would be difficult if not impossible task because so many citizens owned guns.

Of course Canada can continue to spend a paltry amount on defense and restrict personal weapons since all of North America lives under the umbrella of protection provided by the United States military. Canada is like the bumbling inept neighbor.
