9 Health Care Volunteers Shot Dead in Pakistan for Administering ‘Anti-Islamic’ Polio Vaccine

Just when one thinks the barbarism could not reach greater depths of despair, a revelation emerges that even health care volunteers are not safe in lands controlled by Islamic extremists. Thus far, according to reports in the Associated Press and Reuters, nine members of a polio vaccination team have been shot dead in Pakistan for administering what the terror-group Jundallah claims is a forbidden, anti-Islamic vaccination.

The carnage has prompted United Nations agencies to suspend their polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan, where the disease is an endemic.

Jundullah claimed responsibility for the onslaught. The terrorist organization’s leader, Ahmad Marwat, told RFE-RL’s Radio Mashaal that polio vaccinations are strictly forbidden in Islam and that his group would continue the assassinations on vaccination team members in the country.

The most recent victim, a student-volunteer, succumbed to his injuries in Pakistan Thursday, bringing the death toll to nine, five of which were women.

UNICEF spokesman Michael Colemen said that both his agency and the World Health Organization (WHO) have halted all immunization campaigns.

But some in Karachi are attempting to excuse the attacks.

“The attacks on polio team workers are uninformed actions,” Karachi resident Farooq Akhter told Reuters. “[Attackers] are unaware of the polio campaign, its benefits for children, and for the coming generation. Because whoever gets infected by polio will become handicapped for life.”

The Taliban, too, has jumped on board the anti-polio-vaccination campaign for months, according to reports, claiming the health care campaign is merely a front for U.S. spies to operate in the region. The militant Islamic group also claims the vaccinations are making people ill, rather than helping them.

  I am a polio survivor and that is one nasty disease. You never get over it, you just learn to live with it. Fifty years after I was permanently crippled with polio it came back to bite me with post polio syndrome. This just proves that the Muslims don’t care about their kids or anyone else for that matter.   Who cares if these 7th century savages contract polio. We can probably find an old iron lung in some medical museum and send it to them. Polio is a disease that has been completely eradicated in first world countries. Why help these cave men who don’t want the help.

While i condemn the shooting of those workers they do have a point. Our military has used vacinations as a cover to idenify terrorists in that region so for them to be suspicious of this is actually rational. I think the ones that killed the workers shoudl met their makers but i can see why it happened

  I googled Sus-serum & get Sus-scrofa. With mention of pigs.
  
  Is Ovine a typo & you meant to type Bovine?
  
  Equus refers to horses.
  
  So we have most of the barnyard represented. The big animals anyway. Where does that leave me in understanding you possibly interesting but cryptic post? Well maybe I should read up on vaccinations more. I did get the references to “Thimerosal and Merthiolate” One (or both) is used as a preservative for vaccines & contains small amount of heavy metals.

No no no no… this is not possible. There is no such thing as gun violence outside the United States!

I can hear it now, ‘but this is a third world country.’ That is, a country where the freedom of the populace is more apparently determined by the ability and willingness of the individual to protect that freedom… there is no other real difference, beyond the veneer of civility we apply here… Everyone in the US is in a better state than the majority in Pakistan, so there should be no reason for anyone to steal from his brother, but it still happens, and so we still need the tools to protect ourselves.

And in point of fact, any glance at the television images of Egypt or Pakistan or Iraq, and the arguement that America has more guns per captia seems ridiculous… but here we dutifully register weapons and answer census questions, whereas in many countries obtaining the data is impossible.

Horrific to see aid workers– people trying to help the populace– killed for any reason.
Unsurprising that the mullahs, the supposed ‘educated leaders’ of radicalizd islam do not reign in practices that ultimately hurt their own people.

While I want us to cut off aid and get outta there I understand Pakistan has Nukes!! However I believe we need to rekindle our relationship with India and that would put pressure on Pakistani govt. to crackdown on these animals! This was a BIG mistake Bush made!!
