Are The Republicans Too ‘Extreme?’ Most Americans Think So, Poll Finds (But Is That the Full Story?)
While many Tea Party activists have become increasingly disillusioned with Republicans for being allegedly willing to sell out their principles, Americans at large don’t appear to agree on the need for a harder line from Republicans. In fact, if a new poll from CNN is accurate (more on that later), the country may want Republicans to back down even more.
The poll, taken between December 16 and 18, shows some alarming statistics for Republicans, especially those concerned about negotiations over the fiscal cliff. From CNN’s writeup:
According to the survey, 53% say the GOP should compromise more, with 41% saying the Democratic Party should give up more of the proposals it supports to develop bipartisan solutions.[...]
Fifty-three percent of those surveyed say they view the policies of the GOP as too extreme, up 17 points from two years ago. Only 37% say they view the polices of the Democratic Party as too extreme.
It probably doesn’t help that House Speaker John Boehner, who’s leading GOP fiscal cliff negotiations with the president, is held in fairly low regard, particularly in comparison to Obama. According to the poll, 34% of the public approves of how the top Republican in the House handling his job. By contrast, the president’s approval rating stands at 52%.
These numbers may justifiably strike some people as alarming. However, TheBlaze took a look at the poll, and there are some bright spots and unexplained issues with the numbers.
For instance, a majority of Americans are glad Republicans control the House of Representatives, in spite of thinking their policy choices are too extreme. Moreover, while Republicans have been in much better positions in terms of public perception of their policies in the past, Democrats have consistently bested them in appearing mainstream to the public, even at the height of the 2010 Tea Party wave.
Nevertheless, at the height of that wave, only 36 percent of the country viewed the GOP as too extreme, with 58 percent thinking their views were generally mainstream. That number has almost completely reversed, with 53 percent viewing the GOP as too extreme now, and 43 percent viewing them as generally mainstream. Yet for strategists who may want to correct this problem, the poll offers little guidance.
CNN’s poll director observed that the numbers reflect a damaged GOP brand, but the poll does not test particular Republican policies for a perception of extremism. Rather, it simply lumps all those policies together under the Republican umbrella. As such, Republicans would come away from the poll knowing that their brand is damaged and that Americans view them as too extreme, but with no idea why.
In short, this poll may be cause for alarm among Republican partisans, but it also possibly offers information that those partisans already know.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on December 20, 2012 at 4:25pmrepublicans embarked on a morality crusade two decades ago with no desire to make real changes – the whole thing was a ruse to get more votes from christians. The majority of the current republican party has no interest in balancing the budget or reducing government.
Now they are at the end of the road and must decide whether to come out of the closet as socialists or to turn towards the Constitution. The correct choice is to form a new constituency and make the republicans chase it instead of the socialists

Too true! I always feel the party and modern conservatives, do a much better job talking about god, and social issues- and sell it quite well to people who go for that stuff; than they do about the economy and limited gov, they don’t sell it well at all. Party needs to get away from Nixon’s 1950′s conservatism, and the joining of the Republican party and Christian coalition of Reagan’s day. They don’t seem to get that things are not as they were in the 50′s 60′s 70′s 80′s or even 90′s- and they seem stuck in those era lol.
They need to get back to Lincoln’s Republican party, and classic conservatism which only had to do with limit gov, a common sense gov, and common sense approach to other issues- not worried about who is having an abortion, or who is marrying who, or a failing war on drugs. Most of all, they need to get back to the constitution.

Good comments. The ‘conservatism of Lincoln’ of which you speak, was liberalism, as he was a center-left liberal. The fringe of his party weren’t reactionaries, like the tea-party, they were radicals. The liberalism of Lincoln is well represented today. The reactionary wing is well represented as well thanks to tea-partiers and fundamentalists. It is the Eisenhauer and Reagan moderate-right viewpoints that are unrepresented, for every time a Republican so much as claims to think about an issue, or engage in legislative debate or negotiation, they are labled a traitor, primaried, and their funding dries up. Extremist views can play well in small districts, but such policies lose big in general or statewide elections outside of the old confederacy. Today’s conservatives dismiss any result or data that confounds their dogmatic ideology. It’s suicidal, all these extreme guns, gods, and ethnic viewpoints, but it appears todays GOP likes hate and nationalism more than it likes actual political power.

Meh Polls don’t mean much, as people play with the numbers, and then people on a whole are just dumb really. As for the election, while I hoped Romney would win, I had a strong feeling he wouldn’t, and I didn’t pay any mind to the polls being thrown out, why? Because I kept hearing A LOT of people on the religious right, saying they were not going to vote for Romney, because he’s a Mormon- and they don’t trust Mormons. Then of course Ron Paul supporters also didn’t vote, or they voted for Ron Paul, and basically feel that both parties suck (which they do), and that things basically need to go to hell so people can wake up… In other words, it was the GOP, that defeated the GOP in the election lol. They’ll do it again in 2014, and 2016, if t hey don’t change some things- one of them being, getting off the damn social issues, as it is not original conservatism, or the original philosophy of the Republican party.

They read a local newspaper from time to time (liberally biased). They hear a little news on a music station on their drive to work (liberally biased). They read some headline stories on their computer at work from YAHOO, GOOGLE, or MSN Home pages, (liberally biased), and when they get home they might catch a little network news from ABC, NBC, CBS (liberally biased).
Opinions are generally based on the information recieved. If all of the information is liberally biased then the majority will become liberal over time. They won’t even know it’s happening.
And it has happened. It’s a machine continually pumping out propaganda, and half-truths. If it wasn’t so evil, you could almost admire it for it’s effectiveness.

Problem being, most folks identifying as “conservative” actualy mean “social conservatives”… and if you think small government, solid money, and the Constitution are first and foremost for a SOCIAL conservative, brother, you are on the wrong side of reality. A social conservative’s first and foremost goal is using the government to implement their view of what good societal norms should be. If this can be accomplished by small government, following the Constitution, and cutting spending… great! Social conservatives would love to meet both social and fiscal objectives.
… but that never happens. Never has. Enforcing social mores and standards of behavior requires an intrusive government, restricting the freedoms of people to make their own choices (even if those choices harm no one but themselves), and often requires increased spending.

If Marxism is the delusion that one can run society purely on altruism and collectivism, then Liberal-tarianism is the mirror-image delusion that one can run it purely on selfishness and individualism. Society in fact requires both individualism and collectivism, both selfishness and altruism, to function. Like Marxism, Liberal-tarianism offers the fraudulent intellectual security of a complete a priori account of the political good without the effort of empirical investigation. Like Marxism, it aspires, overtly or covertly, to reduce social life to economics. And like Marxism, it has its historical myths and a genius for making its followers feel like an elect unbound by the moral rules of their society.

For now I will only get into this part of your claim. During the conflict from September 1980 to August 1988 we did start to provide some supplies in 1982. Mostly non-military related, although some civilian helicopters were later refitted for military use. The materials that the U.S, sent Iraq during this amounts to almost 1% of the material sent by other nations. Predominately, the providers were the former Soviet Union and France. Posted on December 20, 2012 at 5:51pmShut up, f’king pinko. All you’ve done is berate my time with a Battle E SHOCK UNIT and you were nothing but an engineer/instructor/recruiter posing as a badass. …backwards
You argue that two opposing forms of government are the same thing…. backwards
You argue for Christian values but have expressed you love for murder and genocide…. backwards
So keep loving your collectivism. You’re nothing but a slick Bolshevik poser. You poison conservatives with this idea that a little bit of collectivism is a good thing as if you can stop collectivist policies once you start them.
So everyone has a choice. Listen to GENIUS Ayn Rand who says all collectivism and altruism leads to tyranny or … Time2, a dumb uneducated grunt poser who has constantly used Rules for Radicals on this site to berate folks that want to return to the ideas of our founders. All anyone has to do is read what he just said. He’s telling you a little communism is a good thing. Sounds like that wolf in sheep’s clothing to me.

allow me to step in here for a second..
I also think a little communism is a good thing-
but not of the legislated variety.
Communism is perfect for many households, and family members who love and trust one another.
In situations where love motivates the proletariat, communism is successful.
It’s just not a valid governing or economic theory once you apply it to anyone beyond your home or family.

From your typing fingers to mine JUST. Just wrote back to you what I’ve seen you wite over a period of time here. A seemingly insubordinate hatred for your seniors (and I’m assuming your betters) in your unit of assignment (except for some pilots who actually pulled the trigger you seem to rail against). A mostly John Kerry / John Murtha / Adam Kokesh styled anti-Military rants plus an anti-authoritarian stance on everything and anything bigger than you from A-Z. A Code-Pink mentality that borders increasingly on the ridiculous. And aligning yourself with the worst America haters our country seems to produce and the ideology you and they parrot. I could swear you’re an anarchist sometimes, not the Constitutional loving patriot you seem to have some convinced that you are…

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 3:26pmScrew CNN and their poll. They are agenda driven global socialists that obviously want our guns so their CFR owners won’t experience armed resistance to their NWO take over.

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 3:25pmALL the Politicians today are gutless, immature children who point fingers and argue like kids in a Sand Box. They do nothing. They accomplish nothing. That’s why this Kountry is now a Communist run Kountry and we are heading for 17 Trillion in Debt. It’s over for US. There are NO HERO’s left.

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 3:22pmBetween the dems disinformation campaign via MSM and the changing American demographic, this should come as no surprise. It should, though, let the repubs know that they can’t battle leftism by being left-lite. There is nothing to be lost and much honor to gain by being the voice crying in the darkness. The repubs should rebrand as the true conservatives we need for this country’s survival.

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 3:13pmBut didn’t you guys just hear? OBAMA says that the REPUBLICANS aren’t working with him on Taxes because “The REPUBLICANS don’t like me”. Have you ever???!!!! I mean EVER???!!!
Chas. Krauthammer says this is what a Narcissist would say.
WHEN have you ever heard and ADULT (Man or Woman) ever say that? I’ve heard it in 2nd grade, but an Adult??? GOOD GRIEF!!! and that man has the red button in his office? HE’S nuttier than a Christmas Fruitcake. Can we make it through 4 more years?
THE AMERICANS who are BLACK need to stand up and quell this Racial divisive garbage before our country is totally ruined beyond repair (May be Obama’s goal) . The responsible Adults need to “be the Man” now and stop all of this. This hatred has to stop. IF anyone doesn’t like Obama, it’s because of his Nazi, Commie, Marxist, One-Worlder, Muslim tactics. Good Grief!!! “They don’t like me” ? Have you ever????

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 4:21pmObama, like the rest of the Chicago radicals, is just spewing his Alinsky tactics: accuse your opponent of doing what you yourself are actually doing. Obama is well schooled in the Rules For Radicals. Probably one of the reasons he keeps his school records hidden. ( That ” transparent ” word ? pure Alinsky – means the opposite. Remember ” forward ?” – means backwards ( to Lenin where the Chicago radicals “borrowed” the word ! )

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 4:26pmTOP: The so-called Far Right ( the anarchists) are certainly just like the Far Left ( the OWS / Black Blocs ) ! Both of the “FARs” are nasty, rude, arrogant and dangerous to a civilized society ! Unfortunately the leaders Chicago radicals are determined to destroy American capitalism which places them in that dangerous to civil order , the FAR category.

Posted on December 20, 2012 at 3:09pmThe republicans ARE the democrats. It’s hard when you have to fight with yourselves and ever expect anything to get done.
It’s a prime example of a single party with the same agenda. They are ALL belonging to the “we want our cake and eat it too” Party.
