Culture of Violence? Teen Fatally Shoots Friend With Shotgun After Argument Over Paintball Game
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (TheBlaze/AP) – A 16-year-old boy fatally shot his friend with a shotgun after the pair argued over a paintball game and playfully wrestled at the boy’s home in South Dakota, according to an arrest affidavit released Wednesday.
The victim, Dalton Williams of Pierre, was found lying in the entryway of the accused shooter’s house around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics rushed the high school sophomore to a nearby hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
The accused shooter was arrested at the home on a first-degree murder charge and was being held Wednesday in Hughes County, Pierre Police Chief Bob Grandpre said.
The local prosecutor said the teen is being charged as an adult. He has not yet been arraigned or indicted, so The Associated Press is withholding his name because he is a minor. His attorney didn’t immediately return a phone message.
The boys, both 16, were classmates at Riggs High School.
A 16-year-old witness who was hanging out with the boys told detectives that Williams and the other boy began to wrestle around jokingly after arguing about a paintball game.
The accused shooter then retrieved a semi-automatic shotgun, walked into the kitchen area and pointed it at the witness, according to the arrest affidavit.
The witness said he heard the gun click, then saw the accused shooter take a shotgun shell from a drawer, load the gun and point it at him again. The witness said he then heard another click, according to the affidavit.
The witness told police he was trying to leave the house through a sliding glass door when Williams stepped in between him and the accused shooter. The witness told detectives that the gun fired and he observed a splatter, according to the affidavit.
The witness then left the house and called 911.
Grandpre said law enforcement, Pierre School District personnel and mental health professionals are providing support to the school and community.
“We’re continuing the investigation to make sure we understand everything that we believe happened inside the house,” he said Wednesday.

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 9:27amIf I hear culture of violence one more time I am going to puke. If we had a true culture of violence these crimes wouldnt happen. If would be killers knew that if they did these things they would be dragged through the streets and beaten half to death before they were strung up to a tree to slowly hang to death they might think twice about committing their crimes. Each one of my kids first interaction with a real firearm was to kill something (squirrel) and then clean and eat it. For crying out loud people if you are going to own guns show your kids what the end result of using that tool is at an early age so it sticks with them. When my dad did that for me at age 8 I understood that my actions took the life of that cute fuzzy creature and I cried as I buried his bones.

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 2:49pmI think instead of “culture of violence” being the problem, desensitizing people to violence IS the problem here. TV show after tv show is full of violence; video games are full of violence.
As a kid, I loved the old scary movies with Bela Lugosi and others … they did scare the heck out of me and I never saw a single drop of blood, never saw a chain saw cut off a persons head, never watched a knife rip into a person’s chest, never saw brain-splatter all over a wall, ad nauseum. Today, kids (and adults, too) flock to theaters to swatch this mindless garbage and really seem to enjoy seeing it. Sure, they know it’s a movie, but if you are exposed to something enough, it becomes the normal.
I don’t know for certain this is the cause of some of our violent problems today, but it certainly makes more sense than “the guns are the cause of this violence” claim.

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 5:30pm@ Rusky, I never allowed my kids to play paintball or with “air soft” guns. My mindset was, they “normalize” pointing a gun at someone and, in my mind, would make it more likely they may intentionally or unintentionally point a gun at someone. You cannot be shot if a gun is NOT pointed at you. (please people, I do NOT need a lesson in physics and ricochets) When they were ready, at about 10 years old they went through my firearms training, which included them firing many types of firearms, to take the mystery and taboo away from them and allowed them to feel the absolute power they had. If any of my kids see a unattended firearm, they will not be so curious or careless to pick it up and inquisitively handle it. I also believe that if my kids were in a situation that a friend “broke out” a firearm they would escape the situation, hopefully fast enough. In this case, we have another child dead, because of another improperly secured firearm. I also must add that my firearms are secured, even away from my “trained” children, now 16 and 14. My son, 16, actually owns his own restored Mosin-Nagant, but I control it.
They are charging this kid as an adult, how about charging the adults as well?
As to your point, it is my belief that paintball and airsoft are more of a problem than video games or movies. Hands-on is alway more powerful than textbooks.

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 10:13pmThere is no repercussion for kids actions. We have been regulated into a society of disrespectful people. Do not dare discipline your kids, there are regulations evolved. They do not learn their actions have consequences. We sit here and point fingers at hollywood, video games, guns, why don’t we point our fingers at the man behind the curtain…..our government regulations effect everything in a bad way. Why don’t we see that?? Is it because we believe there HAS TO BE because if we didnt have them parents would abuse their kids??? Well this may be true, but just like guns….the ones that do those kinds of things….well they are still doing it anyways. Child abuse did happen, and still does but it was rare then, and rare now…….And i don’t mean throwing a piece of pizza at your kid, like that one guy who got charged with child abuse for doing that……he was probably frustrated that he couldn’t do anything, without fear of being labeled a child abuser…so he threw his pizza at his kid.
Gov. regulation does more harm in the big picture of things than it helps……why do we still look for it to fix our problems…

The Communist Chinese government, via its state-run media front Xinhua, has called for Americans to be disarmed, arguing that the Sandy Hook school massacre demands “no delay for U.S. gun control.”
Calls on Obama to exploit the tragedy to push his gun control agenda, adding that his lame duck situation represents “the best position to promote it,” while blaming the National Rifle Association for curtailing previous attempts to regulate firearms in the United States.
The Chinese, Russia, Communist South America and Islamic countries don’t want the USA’s citizens to have guns. Why do you think that is?

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 12:03amIf he didn’t have a shotgun, he could have killed him with a knife or a big stick or hammer or whatever. But for sure, the gun made really easy.
Guns don’t kill people. You know that. People kill people. But you gotta admit guns make it really super easy to kill lots and lots of bad guys quickly. But of course there is always going to be people like this, somebody who “perceived” the victim was a bad guy. Perception is subjective and something that gun owners, and recent purchasers of guns must evaluate in their own way, without regard to external norms or government regulations, such as those that society attempts to impose on them by sanction or force.
But history has shown the general truth that if someone perceives an individual is a bad guy, or that 30 individuals in a confined space are bad guys, they are almost always correct in the fact that they are sinners. Society almost invariably benefits when each unique individual exercises his rights of self-protection and courageously defends his rights, just as the Allies did when fighting their evil foes during WWII.
Sure, we all have different perceptions about who the bad guys are. But in the long run, those perceptions about who the bad guys are are almost always correct and will inevitably lead us toward a better and better society.

I am sure his parents taught him all about it, right after they talked to him about gun safety and put the unsecured firearm under the bed.
I know people want their gun ready at a seconds notice while they sleep, I do too. If that is the case, be sure you lock it when you leave, so your curious or emboldened children won’t kill their friends.

Posted on December 21, 2012 at 4:35amSeveral things bother me about this story, or the writing by the Blaze. The original story says He took home a .22 not a shotgun. Also, the term here “semi auto shotgun”, especially in light of the current hysteria. It appears Blaze is actually working for the anti gun hysteria. Who was it Beck put in charge? Where did they work before? We know. The original local story did not say “semi auto”, an agenda by the author of this story? Glenn Beck, are you monitoring the stories, wording and writing style on your Blaze? Or have the rats come out to play while the master is away? Have you put in charge those who secretly work for the other side? Look at the title, the discrepancies between the words written by the Blaze and the local stories, the fact that there appears to be a thinly veiled agenda by some in Beck’s employ. Are we being deceived? Tragic story for sure, should never have happened. We did not act like this when I was young in the 50′s, no memory of similar incidents even rarely back then. Today it seems many of the youth have this devil may care, life has no value attitude.

A recent trend(past few decades I believe) that’s very alarming and called for some laws to be changed, was thrill killing, or killing people you have no connection to, either for the thrill of it, to see what it was like, or more likely gang initiation. Those are also harder to solve.
