This Is What It Looks Like When Boiling Water Is Thrown Into -41 Degree Air (Hint: It’s Pretty Cool)

Whatever possessed this fellow to throw a pot full of boiling water into the air outside in negative 41 degrees Celsius, we can’t say. What we can tell you is the instant column of ice crystals that form — the sound of them freezing included — is fascinating.

Others have found the experiment mesmerizing as well. Since being posted on Lifehacker TV late last week, it has more than 1.4 million views.

Originally posted on YouTube by Russian Dmitry Klimensky as creating “instant vapor,” AccuWeather has taken a look into how it works:

Boiling water thrown into the air quickly freezes into tiny ice crystals.According to an article posted on University of California Riverside’s physics page, hot water can freeze faster than cold water thanks to the “Mpemba effect.” Author Monwhea Jeng theorized that one reason warm water freezes more quickly than cold is that the “lack of dissolved gas may change the ability of the water to conduct heat, or change the amount of heat needed to freeze a unit mass of water.”

The English version of the original video might only have about 1,600 views, but since we don’t speak Russian, it’s worth posting that one:

Make the formula easier… You’ll come within a degree of two of the answer.
      Fº – 32 divided by 2
So 32F – 32 divided by two equals zero Cº.
      Cº times 2 + 32 = Fº
      That’s how I learned it…

This is a fun deal to show your kids, plus helps them to understand how ‘hot’ water will freeze in to ice cubes faster than ‘cold’ water. Plus it’s a nice story to take our minds off of the Gov. B/S for a short time, and isn’t hurting anyone with the small space it took up.

I can see that many of you must be “lying in wait” to crap all over these kinds of light hearted stories, while YOUR kid is sitting in front of an electronic babysitter – playing Warcraft (version “more than Rocky”) and LEARNING how to become a serial killer!

Maybe your kids might enjoy and respect you more if you were to spend time with them instead of buying them video games and i-phones “to get them out of your hair”.

Hot water will not freeze into “icecubes” faster. The mpemba effect will only cause your evaporator to frost up from the steam, you will still have to remove 180 degrees of sensible heat before the water begins to freeze and 144 btu’s per pound of water for it to freeze completely. I have flooded curling ice with both hot and cold water and the cold water always freezes first. They both give off steam though or evaporation if you like.

Thanks, Big Oil Iceman — the boiling hot water did not freeze fast because it was HOT for goodness sakes — it froze fast because the surface area was huge when it was cast into the air. Thus a very rapid heat exchange.

The outside temperature in this story (-41C) would have caused a mercury thermometer to cease working as mercury freezes at about -38. Since the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales coincide at -40, the temperature at the time of the video was approximately -42F.
