Believe It or Not, This Is Our Ambassador to Finland on His Christmas Card

There’s sending a Christmas card and then there’s sending a Christmas card. U.S. Ambassador to Finland Bruce Oreck knows how to send a Christmas card. Get a load of his holiday greeting:

Ambassador Bruce Orecks Christmas Card Shows Bulging Muscles

(Credit: ABC)

ABC News explains the card:

Oreck posted a special edition of the embassy’s 2012 holiday card, featuring his bulging bicep, to his official Facebook account Tuesday and reportedly also mailed copies of it to friends.

The image comes from a photo shoot Oreck did last month for the Finnish fitness magazine “ProBody.” A similar shot donned the cover of the Dec. 4 issue, which included an interview with the ambassador.

“I say 60 is the new 40. My wife says, in my case, 60 is the new 58,” Oreck said on Facebook. “One way or the other, fitness is important.”

He would know, given he’s a former professional bodybuilder.

The Washington Post checked with the embassy and confirmed the arm is not Photoshopped. The Post also found out, however, that the card was not the officially embassy-sanctioned one. Rather, the muscle card was a personal one sent to some friends and posted on Facebook. The Official one is below:

(Credit: Facebook via ABC)

And if the name sounds familiar, that’s because Oreck is that Oreck: his father is the famous David Oreck, the man behind the vacuum cleaners.

So how did a former bodybuilder get an ambassadorship? ABC explains that it pays to be a an Obama supporter: “Bruce Oreck, whose father is vacuum-maker David Oreck, was appointed ambassador by President Obama in 2009.  He was one of Obama’s top campaign financiers four years ago, bundling more than $500,000 in donations for the 2008 election.”

This clone of Mr. Clean (http://img.wikinut.com/img/3w_vt8hf9l8p25d8/jpeg/0/MR.-Clean.jpeg) has succeeded in erasing any shred of dignity and respect due to the position of a United States Embassador. Yes, he did pay for his spot as Ambassador.

“Bruce J. Oreck (born 1953) is the U.S. Ambassador to Finland.

His father David Oreck founded the Oreck Corporation (vacuum cleaners) and (air purifier) systems. Oreck is a former bodybuilder.

Oreck holds a Bachelor of Arts from The Johns Hopkins University, and a Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University, as well as a Masters of Law in Taxation from New York University. He became a partner in a New Orleans law firm representing the oil and gas industry. In 1992 he founded his own firm, Oreck, Crighton, Adams & Chase.

Oreck has authored several books on taxation. He was one of the major contributors to Barack Obama presidential campaign, 2008.”

WALKABOUT, Glad you found that then. When I first saw Big Bad Bruce here, I went to the search engine because he and his father really favor each other in the face. I found the other information, but nothing about the family relationship. David flew B29s over Japan in WWII as a qualified pilot, navigator, and bombardier, then went on to become such a successful businessman. Must really be proud of his son’s accomplishments. Yeah, he was a successful New Orleans attorney, but he bought his current position as a major donor to 0bama.

I have really taken a strong disliking to Oreck vacuum cleaners. Which is unfair in all likelihood.

I think appointing Ambassadors mostly if not totally from the Foreign service community would improve morale (of FSOs). I believe somewhere between 2/3rd & 3/4s of Ambassadors are FSOs. That is pre-Obama.

      AFSA on Ambassadorial Appointments
      http://www.afsa.org/ambassadors.aspx

An argument for not having all ambassadors selected from FSOs is to have your own people in the bureaucracy. Bureaucrats have been known to rule countries more so than the supposed ruler(s).

A weaker argument is that political patronage is important to rally the troops. You can get some ambitious & smart people that way. You also can get ambitious smart & avaricious people that
way :( . But this is a 2 edged sword. Too much patronage & the elections are just a bloodless battles & government jobs are spoils of war.

President Bush’s 36 percent rate exceeds the 29 percent of President Clinton’s ambassadorial nominees who were non-career appointees. During George Herbert Walker Bush’s presidency, about 31 percent were non-career appointees.

In his first six months, Obama forwarded to the Senate 58 nominations for ambassadors. Of those 32, or 55 percent of the total, were political appointees.

Nice Gunn’s! Good work Mr. Ambassador!!

One question – why did you turn your back on Entrepreneuril endeavours like that of your father and the freedom ideas?

Keep up on the workouts though because you know what they say – if you don’t use them…. you lose them.

Even the official one looks totally stupid. Who would send a Christmas card with separate shots of the entitled Ambassador and his lovely whatever then stick a picture of the both of them in the middle. There is nothing in this picture that screams Merry Christmas or even Happy Holidays. It screams, look at me, I’m special and a douche.
