Chris Christie Disagrees With Armed Guards in Schools: ‘You Don’t Want to Make This an Armed Camp for Kids’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Disagrees With Putting Armed Guards in Schools

AP

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Friday said he disagrees with the idea of putting armed guards in schools, saying there should be better ways to ensure student safety.

“In general I don’t think that the solution to safety in schools is putting an armed guard because for it to be really effective in my view, from a law enforcement perspective, you have to have an armed guard at every classroom,” Christie said, according to NorthJersey.com. “Because if you just have an armed guard at the front door then what if this guy had gone around to the side door? There’s many doors in and out of schools.”

Christie was responding to reports of the National Rifle Association’s call earlier in the day for armed security in schools. He said he doesn’t “necessarily think having an armed guard outside every classroom is conducive to a positive learning environment.”

“You don’t want to make this an armed camp for kids,” he said. “I don’t think that’s a positive example for children. We should be able to figure out other ways to enhance safety.”

The NRA’s call Friday came one week after a gunman went on a shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 20 students and six staff members dead.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

Bash the NRAs idea and offer none of your own, big help there. How about we drop the gun free zones and let anyone who wants to carry do so. Teachers, office workers, janitors and the perp will never know who has a weapon.

Is it the car unions fault every time a DUI kills someone? Or maybe the people that produce the booze? How many kids are killed by drunks? About 1300 children died as a result of drunk driving. There were 11,773 drunk driving deaths

Bingo. I could sympathize with the not wanting armed guards in there as long as you’re willing to abolish gun-free zones and let teachers and staff arm themselves if they choose, but of course Christie offers none of his own ideas. In fact, armed guards are not the answer because then the perp knows who to target first. Potential killers need to be unsure whether the classroom they walk into happens to have a carrying teacher. The reason Christie won’t tell us his idea is that it’s likely his idea would be the typical feel good bullcrap peddled by the left, that we can have these gun-free zones and just hope that no armed bad guys get in there to cause harm. He’d get eviscerated for it, so he only attacks someone else’s idea and offers none of his own. Coward.

Beck supports a lot of shady characters, not just Christie. Allen West comes to mind. As long as you’re a neo-con and you talk tough, Beck loves you. Nevermind how you vote and what your views are.

@ Pammie – when I was in school – there were guns in the gun racks of every vehicle in the parking lot – there were no shootings – but we were raised with boundaries, limits, shame and a more than a few swats to our disobedient behinds – oh and we were trained to adhere to that pesky old concept of the 10 Commandments

I “love” how leftist want to enact more and more “laws” and in the same breath discount the only true arbiter of civilized behaviour. Oh – no we can’t mention or adhere to the 10 Commandments but we can enact 10 million pages of laws and regulations.

Somehow I am supposed to believe that a society who won’t abide by 10 rules for behaviour will magically abide by millions of pages of other rules? Really????? How did that work out last week?

If you can’t follow the 10 how are you supposed to follow any man-made rule?

Back to topic, quite a few counties here in FL have school resource deputies detached from the County Sheriffs Dept. It’s their daily job, & I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that a crazed madman hopped up on psychotropic drugs like this nut in CT would not have tried this at one of these schools.

I disagree with the NRA’s idea of putting police or armed guards in any soft target like schools; an attacker would know they are there and plan on killing them first. But there is a workable solution that would be very effective…”The Trinity Defense”.

Any student of tactics knows that the bane of any attack plan is the unknown. The trinity defense would have three individuals selected from a list of willing employees and those selected by the approved authorities would be, screened in re background and psychological stability, then trained in selected weapons, individual and coordinated response to attack, and then given a CCW along with being deputized and receiving an additional $10,000 per year.

The attacker would then be faced with the bane of attack planning…the unknown; there would be three “secret friends” waiting for the attacker to raise his head into the business end of a suitable pistol.

Since they would be familiar with the school, the students and the staff along with being an officer there is no down side; the upside being instantaneous response from three defenders onsite.

For over 15 years in NJ armed police officers taught the DARE program in all NJ schools. Did an armed police officer in uniform make NJ schools an armed camp because DARE was being taught? Some people think Christi would make a good presidential candidate as s DEMOCRAT.

We have very strict gun laws here, but we are not taking a chance with our children in this day and age! Times have changed, either adapt or run the risks of what happens all to often at school shootings.

I can only figure the reason people object to a trained and qualified person or people being armed in schools is……. the fact kids will learn that people just don’t die in the presence of a gun. They will talk to these gun carrying people, they will learn about the gun, they will get interested in guns, they will be more educated then before, and therefore, less of a victim. Can’t have that now can we.

Tennessee already has an armed officer in each school, paid for through local funds via the Sherriff/School Board.

Then, a common sense approach that seems to be gaining steam throughout the south – train and arm the teachers.

      http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/12/20/Tennessee-Considering-Training-Arming-Teachers.

Do you understand the absolute value of “States Rights” now? Let us each take our own approach, and let it be adopted voluntarily by other States if the example works – if it doesn’t work, states can adapt and change more rapidly than the entire nation. No need for these sweepeing “one size fits all” Federal disasters. Which, it appears Christie is in favor of.

There’s something seriously wrong with America when even a republican governor doesn’t want armed guards at school…as if for some reason having armed guards means we’ve turned into some sort of militant state? No, that should just be common sense, if we actually cared for our children we would have had armed guards at schools since the beginning of public schools. That’s just common sense.

There were two police officers at Columbine on the day of that mass murder. In fact there was always a cop in uniform at the school. That certainly didn’t stop those guys from killing everybody. Virginia Tech had a large campus police force.

Sure, the idea sounds great. But having a policeman around doesn’t stop mass murders. That’s a proven fact.

      @you’reameteor

That deputy in Columbine saw one of the murderers and was able to call in backup and detail where the murderer was at. The deputy did confront the shooter and was able to distract him. There must be something wrong in your head if you think having no armed guards there that day would have been better. Just about every university has their own police present on campus. To suggest having none wouldn’t make a difference is to ignore real facts.

I don’t agree with LaPierre in that armed police officers in schools is the best solution. Allowing teachers to be armed would be a lot better decision. I’m going to go out on a limb here.

I agree with Christie on this one, but NOT for the same reasons.

I agree with arming the teachers with LOCAL ordinances. The only way I would accept an armed guard is ONLY if it is the nearest local municipality to the school that is in charge of the methods by which the security is handled.

If the federal government mandates that all schools must have an armed guard, they will be responsible for funding and running the guards in schools. THIS WOULD BE A TERRIBLE IDEA.

Fact is, all I want to hear any federal representative saying is:
“What happened in Newtown, Aurora, Virginia Tech, and Columbine is horrific and the families involved have my greatest sympathies and prayers. Schools will be best secured by the independent and free people of each local community and any federal mandates or programs will only further hinder the security of our schools. I encourage every community to independently of the central government to develop their own standards.”

If we put our passion into thinking DC can solve this, we will have a new department akin to the TSA at our schools; and every other month this agency will be asking our children if daddy has turned over all of his guns to the federal gestapo.

There should be .223 pistols with quad rails located on strategic locations around the schools in quick access safes; not unlike fire extinguishers. They should have a fore-grip, a tactical light on one side a bight green laser on the other side and an Aimpoint red dot sight on the top, they should have 30 round mags with a couple of spares… Several school employees should have access to these and take yearly training on how to use them. The psychos are cowards they only attack the defenseless. Word would get around and it would be highly unlikely these would ever have to be used. If a psycho showed up, several defenders could quickly engage them and take them out. Many schools are the size of small cities and they absolutely must have armed protection.

I’m really not for creating another TSA.

Our Justice system has become nothing but an economy of it’s own working in its own best interest. The last thing they want is a crime free country. They need dead victims (the younger the better) every once in awhile in order to get us to keep opening our wallets and turning over more money and power to them.

Case in point, Remember the killer paroled in MN that his own family said…”if you let him out he will kill again, immediately”. Remember? Well he immediately killed a teenage girl in ND and they did not find her until the snow melted. Bet he is still alive and being evaluated by social psycologist with your tax bucks. They let him out. It should be illegal to take a mentally disturbed child to a “shooting range”, on a hunting trip, or even play a shooting game. And it certainly should be illegal to have a gun in a home where a mentally distrubed child lives. I don’t believe a child can truly tell the difference between games and real life. In the game they can reset and start over with all their lives, but they cannot in real life, can you be certain they know the difference. I believe we should have security at schools. I agree with another writer who said On planes they have marshalls in plain clothes you don’t know who it is, same in a school employ 2-4 who have weapons, taser’s, if you will. Some kind of protection. and If a lady can sit at work and see whats going on at her home, then why don’t schools have ADT. they see everything in real time. This is America we have to be able to come up with something that will keep children safe, cause right now if they want in they will get in, protect our children. Why doesn’t Lardo give up his security for the children’s well being. a man ran his car into a crowd killing several, did the politicians force GM to make cars that would stop prior to hitting a crowd of people. I don’t think so, they got a huge bail out instead. ARS backwards

Well we’d better see to it that he doesn’t get a chance to get into the 016 race. He’s no conservative!

Yeah–ole pork hooves would have to weigh in on the wrong side of this heavy subject. The obvious effect of its gravity has not been lost on the rotund one. As a compassionate RHINO (not misspelled in this case) he has to side with popular culture on every issue except laws aimed at ‘helping’ people to make better food choice. He never met a McDonald’s he didn’t like so I’ll be he can’t wait to take a bite out of this issue.

I’m in favor of high fences and armed guards at schools.
Even school buses should have armed guards.
Anything it takes to keep the kids safe.

He’s a normal Republican…. Time to dump them all, Dems and Rinos….

We need a real Party, and I suggest the Tea Party, because they have morals more in line with Christ than any other group.

Asking a Dem or Rino to be ethical is like asking them to avoid campaign contributions.

      @Mlim,
i agree, including that the Tea Party better live the way Christ intended.
But unless the party members are willing to Live their lives the right way and focus on getting Government back to its limited role and OUT of our personal lives, it’s a non-starter… all it would do is split the GOP vote and guarantee Dem’s run everything.

now that could work, since they HAVE to own things… at least after a decade or so, when even the journalazi’s stop saying ‘this is because of Bush’ But I don’t want to see where the country would be in that amount of time.

      Merrry Christmas

I have to agree with the Big Gov. I don’t want my children to get accustomed to being under the watchful eye of armed guards. If they get used to that, it will eventually lead to having armed forces on every street corner. No thanks, not in America. (But likely in Amerika)

Uhm, our police are armed… we ARE under the watchful eye. They just usually nod and focus on the folks that are pinging their intuition (i know, we’re not allowed to use that or admit it exists anymore, but PC is part of the problem)…

Again, no one is talking stormtroopers marching through the halls or frisking students.
Once upon a time, back when Nancy Reagan began that woeful ‘war on drugs,’ police were in the schools, talking to the kids. Having an authority figure kids know and can go to WILL lead to prevention of mass shootings more than a total ban and attempted confiscation would.

Pretending otherwise is playing into the Left’s hand, and risks adopting their ‘the sky is plaid’ mindset.

@RAYDOCX, You make good and valid points. The problem is, the world is already upside-down. Our common sense logic is uncommon. My remark is based on the new reality that the Libs are in charge and they want total control; more of a Police State, rather than a state guarded by police. ‘Show us your papers or will stick our fingers where the sun doesn’t shine.’ I like the armed teachers idea in TX. More freedom, less government.

No one hates him because he’s fat.
People hate him because he’s a moronic liberal Demoncrat, disguising himself as a conservative Republican.
