Pope Benedict Denounces Gay Marriage During Annual Christmas Message: An ‘Attack’ on the Traditional Family

VATICAN CITY (TheBlaze/AP) — Gay marriage activists are going to be more than outraged by the pope’s recent comments about homosexuality. The Catholic leader has taken his opposition to gay marriage to new heights with a strong denunciation of how people today are manipulating their sex and gender to alter their God-given nature.

Benedict made the comments Friday in his annual Christmas speech to the Vatican bureaucracy — one of his most important speeches of the year and one he dedicated this year to promoting family values.

In it, Benedict quoted the chief rabbi of France in saying the campaign for granting gays the right to marry was an “attack” on the traditional family made up of a father, mother and children.

Benedict also issued a denunciation of gay marriage in his recently released annual peace message, saying gay marriage, like abortion and euthanasia, was a threat to world peace.

“Those who insufficiently value human life, and in consequence, support among other things the liberalization of abortion perhaps do not realize that in this way they are proposing the pursuit of a false peace,” since peace presupposes protecting the weakest, he wrote in this previous message.

Laws granting legal status for gay unions, he said, “actually harm and help destabilize marriage” by obscuring its specific nature as a union between man and woman that forms the basis of society.

The only union that is ‘suitable’ based on the nature of human beings
A union that joins men and women permanently as they ‘cleave’ to one another
The union and context in which children are to be conceived and raised
The only union that is God given and approved

  Without referring to old worn out arguments about what is or isn’t natural, or quoting the bible, how does two gay people getting married effect you in any way? Why are all of you so concerned with what other people do in the bedroom.

  Walkabout. I hurts to see that you tell your son not to be gay. What happens if he is? Will you disown him? Will you send him to marcus bachmanns cure camp? I tell my son to be who they are and that i love him no matter what. If my son is gay is he still not my son? Is he still not my flesh and blood? Love is unconditional. I thought unconditional love was a cornerstone of the christian religion. I can love my son no matter what but apparently your love has limits. Telling him to not be promiscuous is a good thing though. A very good thing.

  Your child should NOT be learning about fisting in school. Your district should really look into that. There is no reason for a 12 year old to know about that until he sees it on a porn site when he is about 16 lol. However teaching your child that not everyone is the same and that there are people that love the same sex isnt going to confuse your kid. Acceptance will actually help your child become a great human being. I was taught that at a young age and i didnt become gay. Neither did my brothers.

Ever since the Catholic Church started permitting marriage between older people, infertile couples, or couples who have no intention of having children, they forfeited the “marriage is for procreation” argument. What difference is there between a man and woman who can’t or don’t want to have kids and a gay couple? No traditional marriage advocate has come up with a compelling answer to this question, which is which a small but growing majority of Americans now favors gay marriage.

I’m not passionate about gay marriage myself, since I believe marriage in the sight of God is more important than civil marriage, a legal contract. But you anti-gay folks are losing the argument. Google and read Republican stalwart Ted Olsen’s “conservative case for gay marriage”, for another view.

Conservative Washington Timjes editorialist Joseph Curl writes: “America 2012 has enormous problems. Is this really an issue that matters to — anyone? Christians, two men getting married doesn’t affect your marriage in any way. Get over it. The Republicans are on the wrong side of history on this issue, and Mr. Obama swept in millions of young voters by his tolerance. It’s time to walk away.”

  Older people are used to the companionship. When a spouse dies you are 1/2 a person.
  
  There are couples who intend on having no kids. I know of a such a guy. At least he intends of having no kids. But he said that if an accident happen, he would take care of the kid. I have every reason to believe him & believe that he would do a good job. I expect him to have a kid by next December. Accidents do happen. 50% of the kids are born in that manner.
  
  Infertile couples? That is becoming less & less of a problem.
  
  If you consider Adam, then you know Eve was made because he was lonely. Note it was Eve & not Steve. That also explains infertile, older & couples not wanting children.
  
  I expect that you have used your argument before or seen it before in other sites. You were just hoping that no one would reply & they would just cave.

  Yes ummm..nice try HOMOSEXUALCHRISTIAN. So you cite the exceptions and not the rule and use the exceptions as your argument? Infertility is an unfortunate consequence. Sexual incompatibility is a biologal certainty. Nature just doesn’t let the same sex procreate..let alone the bible.
  But by all means….tell me what’s “the right side of history” but putting an “OK” stamp on behaviour that sickens you or kills you for merely having sex? Yes..that “inconvenient truth” again..HIV. According to the most recent CDC numbers 64% of new cases of HIV in this country each year are attributed to same sex sexual activity. This from less than 2% of the population. Can you tell me what’s natural and “ok” about these numbers champ?

  1. The number of kids who are gay or are open to gay relationships increases if they have gay parents. This was either the natural level which was suppressed or they are indoctrinated.

  Because I know that allowing homosexuals to marry will not be enough for the hyper-litigious, spiteful Gay Inc and its’ enablers.
  If homosexual marriage is ever ratified at the federal level, Gay Inc. will use it as a blunt weapon against any institution or enterprise that doesn’t want to participate in their fantasy. You dont believe that all americans deserve the same standings and rights because of their sexual orientation. That is called intolerance. He failed to report a boy he believed underage in his school that was seeking sex with adult men at a local “pick up” area for homosexuals. Instead Jennings told him to wear a condom. My how “safe school” of him yes?
  So should I tell my kids it’s “ok” that homosexuals routinely use certain phone apps and websites to solicit immediate and anonymous sex with partners they have no tangible relationship with? Just line up the venue and time? That they should “experiment” with the same thing, yes?

Marriage is a fundamental social institution that does not exist just for the emotional satisfaction of two individuals but for the greater good of the community which stands under the blessing or curse of God. Societies that put emotional fulfillment before right actions and principles will soon give way to a multitude of addictions and deep corruptions and collapse. God will judge any society that institutes same sex marriages.

  Why is it always excommunication? Excommunication is not what most people think it is.
  In the 1983 Code of Canon Law abortion and eight other sins carry the penalty of AUTOMATIC excommunication: apostasy, heresy, schism, violating the sacred species, physically attacking the pope, sacramentally absolving an accomplice in a sexual sin, consecrating a bishop without authorization, and directly violating the seal of confession.
  Apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith. Heresy is the obstinate doubt or denial, after baptism, of a defined Catholic doctrine. Schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or the refusal to be in communion with members of the Church who are in communion with him.
  Violation of the sacred species is the throwing away the consecrated species of Christ’s body or blood or the taking or retaining of them for a sacrilegious purpose.
  Physically attacking the pope is self-explanatory, as are absolving an accomplice in a sexual sin and consecrating a bishop without authorization from the Vatican.
  A direct violation of the seal of confession is one in which both the penitent and the penitent’s sin can easily be determined by the confessor’s words or behavior. Again, the penalty of automatic excommunication does not apply if no one perceives the disclosure.

  Simply stated, excommunication means you are not in communion with the Church and most of the time it happens automatically. All non-Catholics are not in communion so therefore excommunicated.

  The church didn’t excommunicate any of the Nazi’s, why would they excommunicate gays? Church membership is declining fast and they need all the members they can get. The church needs money to pay for child abuse lawsuits and to buy the Pope more expensive chalices and gold.

  The church believes that people are homosexual and are probably born that way and that it is unfortunate. Being homosexual does not deprive one of the love of God. However, homosexual sex is a mortal sin and is called “acts of grave depravity” in the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2357. So you see the Pope is not saying anything new and you can put away your surprise. Homosexuals are called to live a life of chastity through self mastery with the help of sacremental graces and prayer. Also homosexuality is contrary to natural law. Educate yourself please.

Redefining marriage as anything other than one man and one woman makes about as much sense as redefining a 3 sided object as a circle.

Equal rights? Everyone has the same rights; we are all equal to marry one human being at a time, as long as they are of the opposite sex.

And we send more and more lawyers as politicians ( well the Dims do ) than any other class of people. That’s were the term “lawmaker” (which should be reserved to God who actually made what philosiphers call ‘Natural Law’) I guess comes from ( also usrped from God ).

Doubtful. Saying “the pope is against gay marriage” is like saying “water is wet.” Absolutely shocking!

I don’t agree with a lot of Catholicism’s dogma (which is based in early church traditions, not the Bible), but at least they’re relatively consistent with Jesus’s words on marriage and divorce: namely, you cannot divorce for almost any reason, and even if you DO divorce, you cannot remarry.

Jesus said the same. If you’re remarried, you’re an adulterer.

Of course, then Catholicism needs to add in the non-biblical idea of “annulment.” Just can’t keep well enough alone; so much for traditional marriage.

  Absolutely Ignorant!! The Catholic Church was instituted on the day of Pentecost. The Old Testement was the only scripture around and the Apostles traveled and taught. Incidently all of the Apostles are buried in our churches that they instituted. I refer to Paul when he wrote in II Thessalonians 2:15 “Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours”. LOCKED we are “holding fast” as we were told to do. We take this as seriously as the words of Jesus when he said ” Take this and eat it, this IS MY BODY”

  LOCKED – Homosexuals cannot reproduce on their own. If you are in a man-man or woman-woman relationship there is NO WAY to NATURALLY reproduce the species. That is argument enough for me why homosexuality is so wrong. The argument is not about fertility drugs/sperm donors or surrogates. The argument is about NATURE. Gays are trying to break down the traditional family and they are blurring the lines of traditional and time tested roles of the male and female/mom and dad. If you think it is so wonderful and that we have somehow evolved on this issue I completely disagree with you. I think there is mass confusion about gender now that is causing massive depression and destruction. Letting it all hang out and letting everyone do whatever feels good to them has consequences. We are seeing the destruction of our culture in so many ways because we have strayed from the commandments of God.

  I’m completely neutral about it because it doesn’t affect me (or in my opinion, society) in the least. I know homosexuality is a sin, but Christian morals have never been the foundation of our nation. And I think we could both agree that divorce and single-parent households are worse morally, societally, and just as bad biblically.

  1st off gays are monogamish at best judging from the news, self admission of gay bloggers & gay sites.
  Isn’t something like 2/3rds of men & 1/3rd of women have cheated on their spouse sometime in their marriage? That is not good. That does not characterize how many times they cheated & for how much of the marriage. they could have cheated just once & been rolled up into that stat.
  It is not perfect. But I bet gays can make that stat worse.

The pope is right in that the pushing of gay marriage is a deliberate attack on the family. It is part of the declared marxist/socialist agenda.

However, saying that it threatens world peace is taking things over the top and has left a serious message open to easy ridicule.

  Actually he was drafted into the Hitler Youth. All boys were required to enlist at the age of 14 and there was no choice in the matter.

  I think he does a good job of discrediting himself on his own. The man knew his priests were raping children and did nothing except move them to and from parishes. His opinion on anything is void if he couldnt even protect his parishoners children from sexual abuse.
