Report: Mexican Authorities Agree to Release Jon Hammar, USMC

Former U.S. Marine Jon Hammar, who has been imprisoned in Mexico on a gun charge, will be released today, his mother told Fox News Radio.

“Olivia Hammar said the judge hearing Hammar’s case issued a ruling in his favor and that her son is to be released at a time on Friday yet to be announced. No more details were available,” Fox News reports.

“Hammar, 27, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been stuck in a notorious, drug cartel-controlled prison just 15 miles south of the U.S. border since Aug. 13, after he crossed into Mexico and declared an antique shotgun to Mexican customs officials,” the report adds.

News of his release comes just a day after Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S. insisted that Hammar’s case would go to trial, meaning that he wouldn’t see U.S. soil for some time.

“This circumstance requires that he remain under detention during the duration of his trial,” Arturo Sarukhan said in the letter.

Luckily for the Hammar family, it would appear that Mexican authorities have reversed their position and that the former United States Marine will be home for Christmas.

“We know that he’s going to be freed,” a spokesman for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), who fought hard for Hammar’s release, told NBC 6.

      Glad he’s coming home. One question, though: why did he want to take his antique weapon with him in the first place?
      Another question: why can’t people learn to use the right words? boarder is someone who is living in a rooming house or in a rented room in your house. Border is the ‘line’ between two entities as in the Mexican/American border.
      That’s the grammar lesson for today.

      This effort has been going on since the summer and nothing was happening until it hit the media. I don’t think it would have mattered which media outlet it came from, but it truly needed to hit a large audience in order to cause enough pressure on our leaders and theirs to make something happen. Trust me when I say that there was NO movement on this until it became popular. Sorry, but without the media (O’Reilly included), John would still be in that jail, waiting on a trial that may never have come. I’m still a little hesitant to celebrate until I see him home.

    Somebody made sense of this situation very early this morning in the news. The continued incarceration of Jon Hammar will screw up fundamental immigration reform. Suddenly at the top of the last hour I heard this on the radio news that he was being released. Guess that the public opinion trumped the administration’s lack of action here. But, you can expect the State Department and 0bama to take the credit. Not to worry, Jay Carney (Barker) will let us know at his press release at lunch time.
