See the Cellphone Video of a Boston Cop Saving a Woman From Freezing Channel Water

Boston Police officer Ed Norton is being hailed as a local hero after he jumped into the freezing water of Fort Point channel Friday to save a woman who was drowning and yelling for help.

According to WHDH, the woman had accidentally slipped into the frigid water and Norton “didn’t hesitate,” according to a bystander, to take the plunge after her. WHDH reported that water temperatures are in the 40 degree range.

“She was in there calling for help and I can swim,” Norton said, according to WHDH.

“That’s our job to show up when people call for help, if we don’t help then no one’s going to,” Norton said later in the report.

Hal Munger was walking by when it happened and took out his cellphone to record the scene.

Watch the KTLA report with footage from Munger:

Norton said another officer had a life preserver, which he thinks was from the nearby Tea Party Museum, and he used that to slip around her and swim her closer to the channel’s edge. From there, WHDH reported witness Keith Young saying other divers jumped in, the fire department came, and those in the water were rescued by boat. All in contact with the water were taken to the hospital in case of hypothermia.

“That cop was the hero today. Didn’t think twice about it,” Young said, according to WHDH.

WHDH reported that everyone involved was not harmed.

I almost drown in the Avery pond(Brookline Mass) when I was 8 years old.A gigantic fireman jumped in to rescue me.I had already gone under the ice twice and I dont think I would have come up a third time.He broke thru the ice and walked out to me.Ive had a crush on firemen ever since.I think Boston cops and fir fighters are a bit more heroic then most.Just my experience!

He is not a hero…he is just one of the cops not hiding from doing their job because every time that they do they get sued or disciplined for arresting a …..people are drug and alcohol induced mentally ill why would a sane person risk their life for some self destructive sewer dweller?

-You know how hard it is to swim with you street clothes on?
-You know how dangerous it can be to rescue a drowning person?
-Obviously cold water saps your strength.

Calling a person in the water & coordinating with harbor patrol is in the line of duty.
Throwing a life ring is in the line of duty.
If you are in gear ( a la Baywatch or diving gear), then rescuing them would be in the line of duty.

This was not in the line of duty. It was above & beyond considering the risks.

You should seek help. You call this cop, who serves and protects a parasite. Your ignornance is no different than the leftist crazies. Your all full of hate. Just remember, you are no different than the left, both are ruining this country.

Good Cop of the year. I’m not trying to be negtative here but if two cops are watching a woman drown what are they supposed to do? If he didn’t jump in what would have happened next? Didn’t they say some civilians jumped in to help after? Did the cop hear someone say they would save her so he jumped in first? Did some one say “Why aren’t you doing your job officer”? Did that woman fall off her floating bed/raft thing? No one mentioned anything about why she was there to begin with. Set up? Maby he was being investigated by Internal affairs for Bad Cop of the year and he had to clean up his act. Or maybe, He is a Good Cop after all,. What’s the chance of that?

Hey ZMan, Get off the web from time to time, maybe you could be a hero, instead of sitting at home asking all the incredibly important questions. “maybe it was all set up beause IA is investigating this officer for Bad Cop of the year” PS…during your hero adventure, just start off by getting the mail for your elderly neighbor, that’s hero enough for someone like you.

I’m surprised that the cops didn’t try to arrest the one who took the video like they want to do illegally when they are doing bad things like beating upon citizens. Seems like selective treatment given here. I’m glad the cop did what he was sworn to do.

Wow! The way that other cop flung the life preserver to him and he raised his arm at just the right moment to snag it. It was like something out of an action movie starring… Ed Norton.

Was she a suicide attempt that changed her mind? I smell BS. If she wanted to kill herself then she needs to be locked up.

This officer is in shape. He showed us an example of one of many heroic acts police perform day to day. I salute this man for his dedication to his job and selfless action to save a life.
I hope he spent some time in the sauna after than. I’ve been in 48 degree water and it can almost stop you from breathing within seconds.

How is he a hero when there is a raft out there? How did the lady fall in? There is more to this story than meets the eye.

Why wasn’t the fire department there? Is their response time really that bad? 40 degree water is cold, but not really life threatening.

one post at 6:45pm of a cop saving a child,
one post at 11:07pm of a cop saving a woman.
as some of you out are asking, why are these cops
not out there stopping robbers, burg, rapes and kinds of
crimes, why are they saving women and children?
someone needs to look into this.

I’m 71 and a former life guard in my college days. Oh-h-h how I hate cold water. But I wouldn’t have hesitated to going in after her from that platform. I too wondered what all those men were doing standing around not offering to help that cop. This is the new breed, especially in states like Massachusetts.
