Philadelphia teenager Samantha Pawlucy’s parents are suing the teacher and school district after Pawlucy was mocked for wearing a pro-Mitt Romney T-shirt earlier this year. (Photo credit: Philadelphia Inquirer)
The parents of a Philadelphia high schooler who said her geometry teacher ordered her to remove her pro-Mitt Romney T-shirt are suing the teacher and the school district.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the suit claims the district ignored 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy’s right to free speech and allowed other students to harass her, subjecting her “to emotional distress, simply because she exercised her First Amendment rights.”
Pawlucy’s story went viral after she wore a pink Romney-Ryan T-shirt to school and said her teacher, Lynette Gaymon, ordered her to remove it, saying Carroll High School is a “Democratic” school and that it was akin to wearing a Ku Klux Klan shirt.
Gaymon later wrote a public letter of apology to Pawlucy. Romney himself called the teen’s family and said he appreciated her courage.
According to the Inquirer, the suit claims the district’s “de facto prohibition” on pro-Romney T-shirts violated Pawlucy’s right to free speech and says Gaymon defamed the teen by implying she “was a racist and Ku Klux Klan sympathizer.”
Pawlucy’s parents are seeking unspecified damages and are asking a judge to enjoin the district “to make sure they don’t engage in that activity again,” family attorney Walter Zimolong said.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 9:40amI find it disturbing that an “education professional” would attack a student for their political leanings. If a teacher did not agree with someones position then use it as a teachable moment in critical thinking and how to debate ones position. Due to this teachers actions and the way the school board handled the issue, I think all “educators” from the top to the actual teacher should be dismissed and barred from teaching or have any contact with any public education departments.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 1:35pmThere’s one rule for teachers who vote Democrat/Progressive. There are entirely different rules for any teachers (who are willing to identify themselves as) who vote Republican. That’s a fact. There’s a price to pay, and it ain’t pretty, nor is it “fair.” But when you’re on the Left, that means never having to say you’re sorry because YOUR fight is “righteous”. YOUR fight is “pure.” YOUR fight is better than anyone else’s. YOU are “perfect.” YOU are “insightful.” And YOU are probably just as fat as the Communist and United States-hater, Michael Moore. But I digress.
As for the young lady whose story this is about, I applaud her for starting early in her life to stand up for what SHE believes in, and at the same time has the guts to take it to the mat (or, in this case, the Court), to make HER point. I live in Utah one of the most conservative states in so many ways and yet when it comes to the government schools the people here ignore the socialist, green, anti-capitalist, anti-constitution, anti-American indoctrination their kids get there. Government schools are a relic of the past and with computer programs and the Internet your kids are not receiving the best education they can get. Why hold them back? Homeschool your kids and get them out of the corrupt government system. Two hours a day is all it takes to surpass what they get in a day form a government school that is not propaganda.

Re: Utah public schools. High School, Alpine School District. My daughter (now in her 2nd year of college on National Merit Scholarship) gets an assignment first semester of senior year: Make a poster of a current issue. Her poster (along with those of classmates) is displayed in a school hallway. My daughter’s poster had a drawing of a bride and a groom with the caption: Marriage — One Man and One Woman.
My daughter’s teacher told my wife the following. He was approached by a student who was troubled by may daughter’s poster. That student said that the poster couldn’t be up on the wall because of “separation of church and state.” The teacher told this concerned young lady that he saw no problem with the poster and that all of the posters would stay on the wall. The teacher walked away, then turned around and saw the Brownshirt in Training tear down and walk away with my daughter’s poster! He told my wife that he was going to deal with the matter, but we didn’t hear of any discipline. Also, my daughter is very non-confrontational, so she would have been loathe to do anything about it herself.
Yup — Utah County. Congressman Jason Chaffetz’s district.
BTW, this being Utah, maybe my daughter’s high school classmate was pro-polygamy and had a problem with the numerosity of “One Man and One Woman” rather than the genders. Yeah. Sure.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 9:34pmClearly this teacher screwed up. Even more to the point, teachers who feel like they are threatened by a student’s beliefs, and use their position of authority and age to mock a student should probably be given the opportunity to pursue another career (in other words, fired).
But I’d disagree with Michelle44 who says, that most teachers are “communists” and “hate America” and so on. That’s just silly to start with. People become teachers because “they hate America?” Please.
There’s a grain of truth there though. Given that teachers don’t choose that field because of the high pay, most become teachers because they love kids and have an altruistic desire to help train the next generation. Those motivations are different from the Ayn Rand “every man for himself and f everybody else” Republican philosophy. So naturally there are probably more Democrats among their ranks than Republicans.
Are more University professors and educated people more liberal than conservative? That’s probably true and it’s not “indoctrination” as much as the undereducated would like to believe that’s the case. No, more likely it’s because education broadens your horizons, exposes you to ideas that foreign to those who live in the bubble of the town they grew up in. There’s a big world out there, both historical in terms of history and literature, and in the present. Understanding that world has an effect on people’s opinions.

I would have to disagree with you about “broaden ones horizons” comment as I have been over seas, been to many countries, seen many cultures, and many beliefs, however, I do not look at their lives and ways of living as better or worse than mine, just different. It is not my belief to judge or cast stones at how other people in their country live. I do find that most of those that are “educated” lack wisdom and understanding, and thus become bigoted and self righteous in the same way that “republicans” are. I do not hold allegiance to any party and to cast stones into another camp just to show how “educated” or “less educated” someone or group is does not help ones position. Understand that knowledge without wisdom is worthless. Yes, it is my belief that a person can be wise without an “education” as in my case, they are not hindered by someones skewed viewpoint telling them how they should think instead of allowing true critical thinking. As an example, many laws that have “unintended consequences” made by many “educated” and “bright” people that failed to have any wisdom at all and thus fail.
As far as the history part, that is true, however, I can show you how each and every country has falling for the same reason. Those that believe that we, the human race, have become better, smarted, and wiser, I would absolutely disagree. Before you attempt to respond to that I have one word that brings fourth lots of ammo to any argument ..

Although I can see your point, I would have to disagree. Yes there are variations, however, my read of history shows that intolerance and bigotry about others or others countries are fairly the same. Now do not get me wrong, I use the bible to show me how I live my life, however, I do not judge others souls. This is not to mean that I do not judge others actions and how those actions infringe on others. For instance, if a couple, either man w/female or man w/man, is having some kind of public sex, then I think that it is wrong to have that display in front of children. So we have to use some kind of guide and morals to provide for a free and safe environment and do date no one who as actual read and understood the bible can state that the bible is not such a guide.

As God loves all of his children, I do not discriminate by someones color, where they live, or how they live. It is the content of the persons morals and how that person treats others that matters. The particular teacher in question offends me by what she says and responds to someone that does not agree with her way of thinking. The situation is egregious to me and by what the response has been by her and her bosses is quite reviling in disrespecting the community and the trust in the education “professionals”. It is also telling by the populations response at how far we have dropped in our own morals.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 10:33amOLDSURFRAT, I hear and understand both you and AKELA-6. This teacher along with so many others are not psychologically equipped to be trusted with a firearm around students. Her disdain and outspoken attitude for something so mundane as a political difference tells me that she is not equipped to get along with others as it is. We expect the police on the street to be fair with the public and not hold a political attitude against anybody and use their positions against them. We should expect that from all of our public servants to include teachers. Just my opinion. As for communities to seek educators to carry in these forbidden zones, known as super soft targets, they should first seek volunteers, and in particular those who already own weapons, and have an existing CCP. For those who volunteer, adopt the same or similar selection process as the local police department. ie: psychological, physical fitness, and weapons knowledge, and shooting ability. Once chosen this person or persons can do weapons qualifications with the police department on the police range with a minimum of additional cost. Also, selected educators can be offered an incentive addition to their income. In communities where there are already assigned police officers, their knowledge that assistance is within grasp will be a great morale booster. Basically, my suggestion is that communities should use common sense and not overspend

We just need to be honest if we are ever going to get anything done. We can not expect the police to be everywhere for every situation. I would rather see your idea implemented but I hate to see teachers as a whole considered activists or not capable of protect their students and their own life. I know of quite a few teachers that are conservative ex-military.
The acts of the teachers that gave their life’s shielding those children are no less heroic than a soldiers acts on the field or the cop on the street.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 4:57pmYou wouldn’t be able to guess how much I giggled at the fact you connect Republicans to the KKK. While the KKK is semi-supportive of the national GOP, especially in presidential elections (the last two recently and obviously), why is it that these so called extremely racist states have statistically more Democratic governors than Republicans?
Mississippi: 55 Democrats 5 Republicans.
Alabama: 55 Democrats 6 Republicans.
Pick me, pick me, I know why!
Because the Democrats are still the party of racism.
Recently, these states have started electing Republicans. Guess why.
Because organized racism is dying. Racism itself is dying. The Democrats won’t tell you that though. They’ll keep telling the Afr. Amer. community that it’s the Republicans that are racist. (which is pandering to the Afr. Amer. community to play a race card, hypocrites.)
Affirmative action? Racist. Getting minorities, especially African Americans, hooked on welfare? Racist.
I don’t know though, Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic hero of civil rights said it best:
“I’ll have those ******* voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”

I think it’s time for the Democrat (leftist run) education system itself get an education (re-education) of the origins of the KKK and which Party played it’s politics until the Ron Paul brigade of racists brought it into the Republican Party like a noose around our necks… much to the left’s satisfaction (took the heat off of them).
The right has finally gotten rid of the racists (or have we?) with Ron Paul leaving Republican Party Politics. It would have gone a long way with most Americans if Romney had gotten some cajones, nixed his personal nicities with Ron Paul and explained to the American people that we were kicking the nasty racist politics of the Paul, Rothbard, Rockwell and Mises Institute Liberal-tarians back where it belongs… to the Dem Party and their plantation where it started.
This teacher may have been a Romney supporter after that bold proclamation. Doubt it, but ya’ never know…

Dec. 22, 2012 at 9:01amSo happy to see the fall, the end of this party, easy to see the reason for its failings. Alinsky has captured the Progressive side of the R and now they are glued to the Progressive side of the D. All for one and one for all.
God save us….

Dec. 22, 2012 at 9:30amHi Time,
You mentioned the mises institute in your post above. As far as I know they are a institute that deals with economics, not race. Why did you include them? And what is the Rockwell institute?

Dec. 22, 2012 at 9:51amHi TRAIL. Lew Rockwell is the “supposed” Ron Paul Newsletter “Ghostwriter… Ron Paul’s old Chief of Staff, business partner and all around racist.
Rockwell IS the Mises Institute btw.
Ron Paul over the years has stated he didn’t write or even pay attention to what was going on in the Newsletters (and this guy wanted to manage a country… meh) and mainly left it up to Rockwell to “manage” the $$ makers for his Congessional runs.
It was also Rothbard and Rockwell’s idea to hit up anti-Semites for donations for his (Paul’s) Congressional and POTUS runs by soliciting the subscribers of an old rag called “The Spotlight.” Ron Paul Knew that also…. and ignored it. It was all about the “Money Bombs” with Paul and he didn’t care where he got the $$ from obviously.
The 3 stooges… Rothbard, Rockwell and Paul.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 10:04amAnd I add…
In the ’90s, Paul was captivated by the influence of Murray Rothbard and Lew Rockwell, who were trying to promote a “paleolibertarian” movement that would bring together Libertarians with American Southern traditionalists tracing their roots back to John C. Calhoun and the defenders of American slavery.
All the evidence suggests that the bigoted and racist Newsletters were written by Lew Rockwell (Founder of the Mises Institute). Ron Paul says he did not write them. But because of his long friendship with Rockwell, he could not bring himself to publicly identify Rockwell as the author and repudiate what Rockwell wrote.

Dec. 22, 2012 at 10:23amSorry Circlethewagons, but you are just plain wrong about Romney. If he was a progressive, I suspect he would have done much better win the elections. Results indicated he did extremely well with Independents in the swing states, and by all accounts should have won the election. What you should be concerned about,, is the fact that every indication was pointing torwards Romney winning, then he loses by 3 % of the vote. Romney didn’t attack Obama the way many would have liked because he is not that kind of person. Call him what you will but you can’t begin to understand who Romney is unless you were a Mormon and could then realize this is a man who could not be bought nor was in this race for any other reason than he feels it is his inherent duty to serve his fellowman. Unfortunately, it was also this asset of character that didn’t allow him to speak of the 100′s if not 1,000′s of kind acts he had done for his fellow man. Mormons are raised to believe this is just something you are supposed to do and never supposed to talk about or it ruins the whole purpose of doing what they had done. Back to the the “afraid” part, is how was it Obama was able to still win ?? It Obama was successful in getting his base to come out and vote, as it appears he was, where were the other 6-7 million votes he had in 2008 ? They voted for Romney is what happened. Romney succeeded in winning the votes of the Dems like my Mom who voted for Obama last election, it was bigot’s Rep. that didn’t

Dec. 22, 2012 at 10:56amAlways remember what Robert Bork said of Liberal-tarian economists and wanna’be economists like Ron Paul…
“I have heard economists say that, as economists, they do no deal with questions of morality. Quite right. But nobody is just an economist. Economists are also fathers and mothers, husbands or wives, voters citizens, members of communities. In these latter roles, they cannot avoid questions of morality.”

Dec. 23, 2012 at 3:04amThe truth is that most blacks don’t understand what the word “racist” means! It’s a bit hard to wrap one’s head around, but they actually believe that things like homework, being held accountable, being punished for raping or murdering people, etc., are all examples of “racism”! Yes, they really are that stupid, no exaggeration. Here is a link that is making the rounds today: White Ivy Leauge Liberal on Why I Hate Black People: http://i.imgur.com/hnOAg.png

Dec. 22, 2012 at 8:34amDoes this REALLY surprise anyone? Incredible story if the young lady wins in court and the issue or order was that the Union to which she belonged had to pay her fine…. Better yet, if she went to the Union to ask for help and they wouldn’t support her when she got fired as a teacher in the school district…. Now that be a funny one.

These people never learn. They are political zombies that think they can do anything. If you earn a large settlement from the state (tax payers) it does send a message. And considering that the area is heavily socialist (democrat) the people that are paying are the very ones that need to be targeted financially.
Oh, one more thing – Merry Christmas to you and your family. :)
