Your Move, Mr. President: Boehner Says House Has Done All It can to Avoid ‘Fiscal Cliff’
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) during his weekly GOP address said that the House has done all it can to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff,” a combination of tax increases and deep spending cuts set to take effect at the end of the year unless Congress comes up with a budget deal, and that it’s up to President Barack Obama and his Democrat allies to present a “balanced” approach that both parties can agree on.
“The House has done its part to avert this entire fiscal cliff. On the 10th of May and again on Thursday, we passed legislation that would replace the ‘sequester’ with responsible spending cuts,” the Speaker said.
“We also passed a bill to stop all of the January 1 tax hikes. The events of the past week make it clearer than ever that these measures reflect the will of the House,” he adds.
Speaker Boehner continued:
The American people re-elected President Obama on Election Day. They also re-elected a Republican majority in the House. In doing so, they gave us all a mandate. It was not a mandate to raise tax rates on families and small businesses. It was a mandate for us to work together to begin solving the massive debt that threatens our country’s future.
Unfortunately, the president and Senate Democrats have vowed to reject and veto all of our proposals while failing to offer a responsible solution of their own.
What the president has offered so far simply won’t do anything to solve our spending problem and begin to address our nation’s crippling debt. Instead, he wants more spending and more tax hikes that will hurt our economy. And he refuses to challenge the members of his party to deal honestly with entitlement reform and the big issues facing our nation. That is why we find ourselves here today.
I’ve challenged the members of our party to grapple with these issues, to make tough choices. And we’re willing to – because Washington has a serious spending problem. This was the year the size of our debt – all 16 trillion dollars of it – surpassed the size of our entire economy. It’s a grim milestone, one of many we’ll have to bear if we don’t come to grips with it.
The president’s solution of raising tax rates would still leave red ink as far as the eye can see. And it would hurt jobs, at a time when far too many of our citizens are struggling to find them.
Speaker Boehner concluded by reiterating the position of House Republicans: Avoid raising taxes and instead address out-of-control government spending.
“The best way to address our crippling debt is to make significant spending cuts and fix our tax code to pave the way for long-term growth and opportunity. This is an approach most Americans support, and it remains Republicans’ highest priority. But we only run the House. Democrats run Washington,” Rep. Boehner said.
“Of course, hope springs eternal, and I know we have it in us to come together and do the right thing. We will continue to work with our colleagues in the Congress and the White House on a plan that protects families and small businesses,” he added.

The party needs to dump him quickly. The “party” is as dysfunctional as they come. Politics are fast becoming a thing of the past, but we still have to play them.

Posted on December 23, 2012 at 3:04amHow would this play out, do you think:
(1) Republican party folds its tent
(2) All who were Republicans register as Democrats (NOT a “new” party)
(3) Now conservative and libertarian candidates have a shot — even in the Northeast — at the primary level where the vote can get split 3 ways (or more).
I know it won’t happen — too much money for some folks in party leadership. Still, I wonder if it’s benefits would outweigh its advantages. Basically, “one party” COULD be the effective equivalent to NO parties.

Posted on December 23, 2012 at 8:03amYou are full of it Boehner. This President ran on raising the rates on anyone’s income above 250k a year, and WON the election. The only reason you still have a majority in the house is they weren’t that many tea party republicans on the ballot that where in 2010. You had to tuck your tail behind your arse cause they wouldn’t even raise it for people making 1 million a year. Obama can’t negotiate with someone who can’t give half way. Obama even offered cuts to Social Security. Something no Democrat has ever offered and lowered it to people making over 400k a year and still you don’t have the votes. You republicorps have control of one branch of government and you act like you have all the power. You tell me how you get rid of our debt by just cutting safety net and entitlements our elderly have paid into there whole lives? You can’t you must raise taxes.
Keep playing politics with this so called cliff. and you’ll be out of power in 2014 and you will guarantee Democratic control of government for 50 years. All to protect rich peoples continue’d 0 effective tax rates and see where that gets ya….

Posted on December 23, 2012 at 9:15am@REALINDEPENDENT When are you liberals going to start looking at the real data and realize that even if you raise taxes on everyone – rich and poor alike, we still won’t have enough revenue to offset the current spending crisis? If you would actually do your homework, a lack of revenue is not the problem. Out of control spending is. And Social Security is only a part of that spending. There are other areas to cut. I really don’t think anybody wants to make cuts to Social Security. That’s why your god, Obama, offered it: because he knew it would be turned down. But how many “entitlements” do we need? Why do we need to keep adding more, and more, and more? I don’t see you talking about the other entitlements that the elderly and all of us (working people, at least) pay into that they or we will never see a dime of.
BTW, your handle, REALINDEPENDENT, on a liberal is a contradiction. Independence is the antithesis of security. You give up more independence the more you demand security. Even if you can honestly claim that Social Security is actually “secure” in the hands of an over-spending government, it doesn’t spell out “independence”. If the elderly cannot live “independently” from their Social Security, then, obviously, they are dependent on the government. Then it’s not REAL INDEPENDENCE, is it?

I think what Soy was saying is that some left wingers voted for (Nader, perhaps? Was he the “Green” candidate?) instead of Gore and that gave Florida to Bush. Could be. And while that sure would be a big case of the third party influence going in favor of a more conservative candidate, it simply has to be a small minority of that. I am absolutely sure that third party candidacies hurt conservatives much more often than they hurt liberals. (Of course, I am also SURE that most bad calls in sports go against “my” team).
In any event, Soy’s “change the system” comment is a bit ironic. Usually the folks who run as Libertarian or Constitutional candidates will be very vocal about individual choice, personal responsibility, etc. I would think that anyone who subscribes to such a philosophy would be very opposed to government-based solutions and would instead encourage self-restraint and the exercise of some humility instead of the hubris that is the hallmark of third parties in America for several decades.

If you believe in Jesus Christ you know it gets much worse. I suggest you get on your knees and cry out unto the LORD, who is the only one who can save you. Whatever you have on this earth is going to be destroyed in the end. I’m looking forward to being with Jesus, and will depart on his terms.
Accept his free gift of salvation and be free from all your worries. I’m happy and joyful over watching him work his will regardless of what any of us do. You can’t save yourself. You know your flesh must die or be translated and if you don’t believe, ponder the works of heaven and earth and decide soon.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
If you need comfort and want peace in your life about any issue, just go to the book of Psalm and start reading, doesn’t matter where you start as far as chapter or verse. Just read!

If Boehner can’t pass a bill he put forward, one so ridiculous that was never had any chance at all in the Senate, how is President Obama supposed to figure out how to pass a bill, even one Boehner supports through the House?
The House is broken. They are incapable of passing any legislation at all, let alone something that the Senate might pass. Thanks to the far right and their inability to compromise, and their determination to vote “no” on everything no matter how inconsequential, has brought the US government to a standstill. They’ve brought down the government. As of right now, the US doesn’t have a government capable of making decisions. Spooky.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 9:30pmHate to say that I agree with Howard Dean but he was actually correct when he said we need to go over the fiscal cliff. EVERYONE needs to pay, ALL spending needs to be cut, including the funding for the ever expanding military conquests and cherished entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. No one in DC has a set to actually do either. This country has been living off the gravy train of fake money for decades. As Reverend (in name only) Wright said – “The chickens have come home to roost”.
I can not wait to hear the cry babies who thought Bush was an evil man in the pockets of only the rich (I do think that he was a horrible president) when their tax rates increase from 10 to 15%. Maybe then they will see how much he cut their rates, as opposed to the evil rich who only had their tax rates cut by 3%. Add to that the payroll tax increase of 2% and the beggars and moochers will know how it feels to be pick pocketed by the federal government.
When they raise taxes on our business and others the employees will be crying foul too, because no more cost of living raises, less hours and reduced benefits are all coming their way. The IRS will be getting those checks come 2013. They will be reminded that elections have consequences. They will also be told that the goose (employer) who laid the golden egg (benefits) has flown the coop. Uncle Sam is now their sugar daddy and insurance carrier. Good luck to the 47%, now your goose will be cooked too. Welcome to the cl

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 10:02pmWe probably could find ways to cut the military even though we have been cutting since 1989. It would entail risk. Maybe we could look into procurement & find something. Contracts are usually on a cost + basis.
We could save a great deal if we stopped all research & development & for pennies on the dollar we just steal Chinese & Russian technology.
We would be out of Afghanistan if we had whipped the Taliban, which we can’t do because they have safe haven in an adjacent country. Yes, some are all of the Pakistani government is playing a double game. But it seems as though there resources were stretched taking South Waziristan from the Taliban let alone take the northern half.
We had every right to go into Afghanistan. If you don’t agree say why not. If we had ousted the Taliban & left, then the Taliban, ******** & leftist around the world would say we destroyed the country & people are starving. Hence Colin Powel’s ‘if you break it you own it’ comment.
We had every right to go into Iraq. They broke the armistice signed in 1991. We found many WMDs in Iraq (including 500 tons of yellow cake). I just looked up the articles.
Putin by the way put one over Obama this weak. He secured the Iraq & Syrian WMDs. So it is safe for tards to say Bush lied, people died. I don’t see the rebels toppling the government in the next 3 months. It is hard to tell & I could be wrong.

But when the federal government started to fund itself through federal reserve and inflation, they were able to grow spending without raising taxes.
Sometimes i think they should raise taxes to cover the entire deficit – that way americans would see how much government costs. Yea it would tank the economy – but it is going to happen anyways

I also have to point out the absurdity of the idea that the republican party is falling apart, it’s reforming though.
The last elections, and most all, are being lost because the party keeps throwing RINO’s and other liberallites as the candidates to win those in the middle, and instead they lose regular conservatives who realize they aren’t being given a choice, so they stay home. I doubt that happens in the next election as all but one of the possible runners are Tea partyiers, and the one that isn’t is Jeb Bush, and America left and right is sick of the Bush Dynasty. Funny though, that G.W. did run as a real conservative and won, even if he wasn’t.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:18pmAs NoBama sits in Hawaii soaking the sun and ocean breezes at your expense ($1.34 billion in trips last year alone),as he celebrates his accomplishment of achieving the fiscal cliff that will increase taxes on everyone. This is his his agenda and why I dealt with my IRAs, etc. last month. Taxes go up, businesses go back into struggle mode, the economy tanks, and NoBama is pleased. Spain is in better shape than us. This is what the likes of the 49%, including you trolls here, as stupid as you are, want. Malthus had it right.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:18pmAs economists debate about elasticity in the economy. When tax rates go up or down do people shift their economic activities.
If the taxpayers actions are inelastic when tax rates go up, then the Democrat way of scoring additional revenue when taxes are raised is correct.
If not then Democrats are wrong.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:05pmGood – Boehner and Republicans need to stop negotiating with obama, because obama never had any intention of accepting any compromise anyway. It’s obama’s disaster – let him own it (when he, and 200 plus family members and staff, get back from their xxxxxxx-million dollar, taxpayer funded, luxury Hawaiian vacation). Let it burn!

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:14pmI think what you say is true. Obama never had any intention of accepting a compromise.
The thing is as popular as FoxNews at #1, it still doesn’t balance ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN & the comedy channel.
Kabuki theatre had to played. It should have been played better. Boehner should have accepted a compromise at 550K or 600K. After the ink was dry, he should have went on TV & told the American public that the Clinton the additional revenue from those increase tax rates only close the budget deficit by 8% and that what the MSM & Obama are doing is a sham.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:03pmI think Mr Boehner should have counted with 850K when Obama countered with 400K, hust to see if he would move.
The money to close the yearly budget deficit at the Clinton rates is not there at $1M or 250K or anywhere in between. So Obama’s starting bid to close the deficit gap & put forward a workable budget was fraud. All he wanted to do was play class warfare. As far as I can tell he is winning in the short term.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:01pmHmmm let’s see the Marxist POS hasn’t had a budget in four years and he couldn’t even get one vote from someone in his own party to vote for it and crybaby Boehner thinks Barrys going to do anything to make a deal? HAHAHA No folks the Marxist mulatto POS doesn’t want a deal he wants everyone’s rates to go up,how do you expect to pay for the disaster that is Obama care and every other BS program the maniacal Marxist maggot can dream up? The rates will go up and it won’t do a damn bit of good in fact it’ll harm the economy but it will appease Barrys simpleton base, after all that’s all that counts to the unending campaign of BS.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 8:06pmEncinom,
1. Using the Clinton rates for earned income over $250K would not have closed the budget deficit. Do you agree?
2. the budget cuts offered by Obama by themselves or with the increased marginal tax rates would not have closed the budget deficit. Do you agree?
3. If the budget deficit is not close & the debt keeps getting added to, then we are inn trouble. Do you agree?

So just exactly what do you think congresses job is? To keep spending and increasing the size of government? When the government extracts money from the private sector it uses that money to increase the size of all the BS programs the constitution rapers dream up.It won’t use it to pay down the debt and I know this because there isn’t enough dollars in the country to have any affect on that debt. Stop being so obtuse and accept the fact that the ‘ONE’ doesn’t want a debt deal he wants all the rates to go up because he’s a collectivist POS who believes government is the answer to all our problems and that’s just BS,we all know government IS the problem. Slash spending by the trillions problem solved.

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 9:10pmRepresentatives in the house are sent there by the citizens of their districts to represent them, not the party or the majority. If they ran on a promise of no new taxes then they are doing the will of the people that elected them. Putting our fate in political parties will destroy us just as George Washington warned:
However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.
