Tawana Brawley Resurfaces in Virginia

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tawana Brawley is living in Virginia under a new name, still owing money to a New York lawyer she accused of raping her 25 years ago, the New York Post reports.

The Post reported Sunday that the 40-year-old Brawley lives in Hopewell, Va., has a young daughter and works as a nurse in Richmond, Va.

Brawley was 15 and living in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. when she said six white law enforcement officials abducted and raped her. Brawley is black.

The allegations spurred a national racial controversy before a grand jury decided they were false.

The Post says Brawley never paid a $190,000 defamation judgment owed to one man she accused.

She told the newspaper she doesn’t want to talk to anyone about the episode.

There was no answer Sunday at a possible phone number for her.

Tawanna Brawley was 15 years old when she sneaked out of the house to visit with friends. Then, being afraid of her mother’s boyfriend, she made up a story of being attacked by six white police officers. she then threw in an ADA. Al Sharpton showed up, along with three lawyers. they made a big national issue out of it. However, they would not allow anyone, including doctors, the district attorney, the prosecutor, etc. to speak with Tawanna. A witness was found saying they had seen the girl smearing feces on herself and putting herself into a black garbage bag in the courtyard of the place where she used to live. Because the accused could not question the accuser, and only Sharpton or the lawyers would say anything, along with the witness testimony, they were found guilty of defamation of character. The 3 lawyers were disbarred, while Sharpton and Tawanna were fined thousands of dollars. Tawanna still has not paid. Sharpton had his fine paid by group of politicians so that he could go forward in politics, seeing as how he had achieved a measure of fame.
Apparently Sharpton and the lawyers quickly found out Tawanna had lied, and kept her from speaking to anyone, because they did not want to lose the limelight and attention from prominent black athletes and politicians. Sharpton has never had the guts to admit he lied.

What is interesting here is that Brawley is an LPN (licensed practical nurse) who must have background checks done on her to be in nursing in any healthcare facility. HOW did she accomplish hiding her identity? WHO helped her with that? What about her Social Security number? Something smells here.

  Yes, but a full and complete background check must be done by the healthcare facility that hires you. This includes a state fingerprint check, child background check for abuse, and a check from the state on any criminal charges filed against you. Some facilities may do a bankruptcy check also. Ms. Brawley was 15 when she did something stupid. It caused a big stink and the White lawyer sued her and won a judgement she couldn’t afford to pay. I’ve read your comments here. They are quite racist and sexist and generally disgusting. There is no such thing as an “Obama Phone”. The legislation for the free phone predates Obama’s Presidency and it’s paid for by a fee on phone bills. It’s to protect poor old people and to help the enemployed to have a number so they can get job interviews. Of course, you don’t care how incorrect the information is, you folks just can’t resist repeating it, no matter how stupid it makes you look.   I do agree with you that some of the postings are very rude and I would ask the readers to make an effort to respond politely and with facts. Having said that, please keep in mind that Ms. Brawley was 15 years old, not a child and was manipulated by Al Sharpton and his cohorts.
  
  However, she is no longer 15 and has shown no desire to apologize for the fraud she participated in all those years ago. She was instrumental in ruining the lives af several people by her false accusations. the fact that al Sharpton was a party to this fraud was certainly no surprise then nor is it a surprise now when he makes false accusations on a daily basis on CNN.
  
  Al Sharpton has continued to display his racism and it is a sad situation when a once proud news network such as CNN has someone like Al Sharpton host a news/opinion show. CNN could sink no lower than it has during the last 20 years.

Soooo, what’s the new name? I looked up licenses (publically available), and found a “Catharine T. Brawley” in the Virginia area working as an RN, but the original license date is 1987..which means she would’ve had to finish nursing school when she was 15…I doubt it’s her, and I seriously doubt this loser works as a “nurse.”

  Brawley ended up in one of the stankin’nest towns you can possibly live in.
  
  Hopewell, Va has a paper mill that produces the foulest of odors and the town stinks to high Heaven for the better of any day. Been through there on business a number of times when I lived in Virginia and couldn’t get out of there quick enough. It’s a pretty depressing looking town and the people look none too happy… but does have a lot of history that surrounds it.

  Years ago, back when Oprah used to do a Jerry Springer style show, she had a group of AA women on there defending naming the children with what they themselves termed “African Names”. And these were reasonably well spoken, educated women, many with professional jobs.
  
  She also had an AA woman who was a sociologist who had done her doctoral thesis on African-American families using names they said or thought were of African origin. She told them she’d collected over 500 of the Afrocentric names, and she’d gone to Africa and could not find even on of the Tawana, Shaquanda, DonDree, Moleka, type names. She spent a YEAR looking, in 5 or 6 Central and South African countries, the very ones the namers claimed the names originated in.
  
  There was a decent, well positioned discussion until the good Doctor had the nerve to tell those women that , “…regardless of your intentions, you are hamstringing your children by giving them these “N” names…”. Any semblance to civility was GONE then! And the Doctor was outnumbered with 5 or 6 women trying to punch her lights out.
  
  Now I’m no trained sociologist, but I have on good authority, that IF you see names like that in the paper, it’s a fair bet that the person mentioned, is NOT a Caucasian.

  I think I remember that show. The other day I heard a real doozy. A woman named “Shaqualla” on one of those Judge Joe Brown shows. She must have been named after Shaq!
  Black women are pretty much screwing their kid’s futures when they try to get all creative and unique. Their kid won’t get a job 20 years down the road because of their weird names. What’s wrong with the name Marcus, Gerald, Thomas, or Louis?
