This Is the Giant Christmas ‘Tree’ South Koreans Lit Near the North Korea Border

A 100-foot-tall steel Christmas tree with about 30,000 light bulbs, is lit by Christian groups at the western mountain peak, known as Aegibong, in Gimpo, South Korea, Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012. The Christmas tree would be visible by North Koreans living near the Demilitarized Zone that divided the two Koreas.

GIMPO, South Korea (AP) — South Koreans have lit a Christmas tree-shaped tower near the tense border with North Korea for the first time in two years following North Korea’s rocket launch.

Seoul’s Defense Ministry said Sunday that it allowed Christian groups to light the massive steel tower Saturday. It’s to stay lit until Jan. 2.

Pyongyang views the tower as propaganda warfare, though it has not yet responded to this year’s lighting.

The lighting came 10 days after North Korea placed a satellite into orbit aboard a long-range rocket. South Korea and the U.S. say the launch was a test of banned missile technology.

The tree wasn’t lit last year after officials asked Christians to refrain from doing so to avoid tension following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il last December.

I swear, these two countries. It’s an international Hatfield and McCoy situation! I hate to see two countries go at it, but that being said we should support the ones who respect liberty, freedom, and human rights like we do, or at least (we used to) the same as Israel in the Middle East, Eastern European block countries vs. the the ex Soviets, South Americans vs. the Commies, and Japan and India vs. the Chinese in Asia. Just my little **** brained idea anyway. I’d love to see us follow through, but under this current government, I won’t hold my breath.

Banned missile technology? WHAT???

You mean someone passed a law/treaty that banned something and someone still did it or used it? WHAT???

I thought that was impossible in today’s liberal world. I thought that just because you passed a law it was automatically followed by everyone…even criminals and terrorist countries.

Guess we need to pass more laws to make that banned missile technology law/treaty stick huh.

That’ll do the trick. I just know it will.

  All they need to do is pass a law that makes it illegal to not follow the missile law. That trail could be added to unto infinity.

Er… it doesn’t look a thing like a tree to me — more like Sauron’s tower, complete with a glowing sphere at the top, though not the same colors lol.

  Newest weapon on most County Sheriff’s armory, mobile tower trucks that look like a satellite truck, which can capture your cell phone info, text messages, etc…..without your permission, as you pass the tower.
