Fury After Paper Publishes Names, Addresses of Legal Pistol Owners in New York

New York Journal News Publishes Names, Addresses of Gun Permit Holders in Westchester, Rockland Counties

New York’s “Journal News” ignited a fierce debate Sunday after publishing the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in two New York counties.  They are actively working on acquiring data for a third county.

The article, titled “Map: Where are the gun permits in your neighborhood?,” reads:

The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.

Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis.

To create the map, The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. By state law, the information is public record.

Putnam is still putting together its records and could not immediately provide any data. The map will be updated when that data is released.  [Emphasis added]

Here is what the map for Rockland County looks like (note: the image below is a screen shot, so clicking on the dots will not reveal the personal information like in the original):

A map for Westchester county is also visible on the site.

Unlike with the above map, however, on the Journal News website, you can click on any one of the dots and get the full name and exact address of the permit holder.

AMI Global Security, which published an article condemning the “massive privacy breach” that is “meant to intimidate the lawful” and “abrogate the Bill of Rights,” collected a few of the first comments:

“If the homeowner is killed or injured, will LOHUD be charged as an accomplice to the crime?”

“It is as if they put out an ad to jewel thieves listing the names and addresses of where to find diamonds and cash.”

“This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this? This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should I hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun?”

“Now everyone knows where the LEGAL GUNS are kept, a valuable piece of information for criminals. Why don’t you do something helpful, like trying to find out where the ILLEGAL GUNS are kept? That would be helpful to the non-criminal population”

AMI Global Security also added recent “threats from local government” with regard to guns.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said last week, as the nation still shook from the tragedy at Sandy Hook, that he was considering new gun control measures when it came to “assault” weapons in the state:

“Confiscation could be an option.  Mandatory sale to the state could be an option.  Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

This is not the first time the journal news has published the private information of gun holders.  They pulled a similar stunt back in 2006, but that time, they only published names and municipalities– not exact street addresses.

If these weenie little punks really felt that the average gun owner was a threat to society, they never would have done this. They operate under the same assumption the christophobic atheists do – that the targets of their ire are law-abiding and peaceful to the point they won’t respond to their stupid antics with any sort of violence. So their own actions disprove the point about their opponents they are trying to make in the first place.

Fine example of why to buy your weapons from gunshows and individuals. Never register a weapon for any reason. You already have the constitutional right to own it, period. Registering is simply so the government and their minions know where the guns are. Now, the criminals know who as well, it seems.

Agreed but it may be illegal to own unregistered guns in that county. It is New York after all.

Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.” Oh thank you king Cuomo for allowing us to keep our firearms. Who the hell do you think you are? First of all it isn’t yours or the governments right to know if I even own a firearm, all your permits and paperwork are illegal and violate the second amendment. Every ‘gun law’ passed since the second amendment is unconstitutional. These idiots providing private information on legal gun owners are exposing themselves to litigation and I hope they’re sued out of existence. What’s their agenda for exposing private information of legal gun owners? They’re propagandists for the regime and should be called out on it.

I certainly hope a bunch of those not listed actually own an arsenal of long arms. So the criminals who think the homes are safe to rob are met with a nasty surprise.

Also I thought actual addresses were protected by the Privacy Act. I hope they get sued out of existence.

Only the aristocrats will be allowed to have guns and have their children and property protected by guns. We all know Sidwell Friends, the school of choice for the children of aristocrats, is protected by arms, but our kids’ schools have to go unprotected because we apparently dont matter as much. Chris Christie has lost any semblance of support from me when he ridiculed the NRA proposal to protect schools with arms. If we do protect our schools with arms I suggest we make the White House or State Dept. a gun free zone. If it is good enough for our kids, why not our rulers?

The criminals along with the Government now know where they can get their hands on guns without having to register or pay.

May be it’s time to publish where the newspaper has it’s presses, has it’s newspaper offices, where the publisher and editors live, and where they have newspaper outlets. Then we can let the crooks know where they can find an easy target for rape, robbery, break-ins, and arson. That sounds like a fair exchange. The permit holders can show up with bananas in their holsters and can tell them, “Gee, I’d like to help you, but someone was stupid enough to believe that the police could do it all!”

    That’s insane.

I’m wondering if this is a “hint hint wink wink” to the same liberal nutsos that steal political yard signs? “We don’t want our names attached to confiscation so go steal them when nobody’s home?”

And I just love that after that SentFromBraineaters guy was all over the previous gun articles here claiming NO liberal politician was talking about confiscating guns, here we go! Will he admit he was wrong publicly?

Some day, when a violent crime happens at the New York’s “Journal News”, I hope they are left sitting defenseless in their little “gun free” zone. I hope no one with a gun shows up to protect and rescue them from the criminals.

This is why the registry of firearms will be defeated in court and the pushback begins today. Law abiding Americans will now have to defeat the newspapers and the criminals (one in the same)

It may not be all that bad. Burglars now know where the guns are so they can avoid them. Just like everybody else, they do not want to enter harms way either. There is a significant down side to being shot in somebody else’s home.

How about posting the addresses of liberal “gun-free” homes? They should be proud to publicly celebrate their profound enlightenment. PLUS it will encourage the “needy” to go there and redistribute their household wealth.
