Fury After Paper Publishes Names, Addresses of Legal Pistol Owners in New York

New York Journal News Publishes Names, Addresses of Gun Permit Holders in Westchester, Rockland Counties

New York’s “Journal News” ignited a fierce debate Sunday after publishing the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in two New York counties.  They are actively working on acquiring data for a third county.

The article, titled “Map: Where are the gun permits in your neighborhood?,” reads:

The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.

Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis.

To create the map, The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. By state law, the information is public record.

Putnam is still putting together its records and could not immediately provide any data. The map will be updated when that data is released.  [Emphasis added]

Here is what the map for Rockland County looks like (note: the image below is a screen shot, so clicking on the dots will not reveal the personal information like in the original):

A map for Westchester county is also visible on the site.

Unlike with the above map, however, on the Journal News website, you can click on any one of the dots and get the full name and exact address of the permit holder.

AMI Global Security, which published an article condemning the “massive privacy breach” that is “meant to intimidate the lawful” and “abrogate the Bill of Rights,” collected a few of the first comments:

“If the homeowner is killed or injured, will LOHUD be charged as an accomplice to the crime?”

“It is as if they put out an ad to jewel thieves listing the names and addresses of where to find diamonds and cash.”

“This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this? This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should I hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun?”

“Now everyone knows where the LEGAL GUNS are kept, a valuable piece of information for criminals. Why don’t you do something helpful, like trying to find out where the ILLEGAL GUNS are kept? That would be helpful to the non-criminal population”

AMI Global Security also added recent “threats from local government” with regard to guns.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said last week, as the nation still shook from the tragedy at Sandy Hook, that he was considering new gun control measures when it came to “assault” weapons in the state:

“Confiscation could be an option.  Mandatory sale to the state could be an option.  Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

This is not the first time the journal news has published the private information of gun holders.  They pulled a similar stunt back in 2006, but that time, they only published names and municipalities– not exact street addresses.

In NY state if you have a permit, a gun must be on it or they revoke the permit. So, all these pins on the map are current actual legal gun owners….nobody will be breaking into their houses while they are home anyways!

I have a challenge for you Blazers with some investigative skills and computer ability.

I would like you to find the names, physical address, phone numbers, and emails of every employee of the New York Journal News. I would like you to provide this information to the Blaze, and to link to this info on the Blaze Forums.

Those of us who are not so computer savy can then take this info and provide it all of the private citizens who were listed by the paper as being hand gun owners. We can also inform the paper and its staff that this is being done. Then they can recieve threatening emails, phone calls, and watch for strange people driving down their street, like these innocent citizens are going to have to do now.

It will be interesting to see the editors and reporters howl as their private info is released, and have to spend months worrying about payback.

I would like to see these people get at least a little justice.

Why not also post the addresses and work schedules of single people so there is less risk to burglars and to increase the efficiency of empty home valuables acquisition operations? oh. that information is for you’re staff’s own personal use. Releasing this data is agenda driven.

The depth of this “paper”‘s and its publisher’s stupidity is absolutely unfathomable. In their blind hatred of legal gun owners, they think they’re rallying their fellow rabid haters to protest and harass their neighbors, similar to the way Jews were harassed in Germany in the early 1930′s. But what they’ve actually accomplished is to (1) set themselves up for a massive lawsuit that with any luck will put them out of business; (2) help gun owners in that area know who they can trust and who they can’t; (3) tell the criminals which houses are certain to be unarmed and therefore easy targets; and (4) further expose the anti-gun movement for what it is: a bunch of really stupid, ignorant people who hate what they’re incapable of understanding. Congratulations, you submoronic liberal bozos, your little Nazi scheme is backfiring big-time!

If I lived in that area, and did not own a gun, I would immediately go out and buy one. I would not want anyone to know that my house was unarmed. Yes, FOIA requests are legal, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing to publish.

Well they actually did the criminals a solid, They now know what houses to stay away from. They know who is armed and do not want to face an armed home owner so they will go for the others.

Now I think we should get the home addresses and phones of all the people from that paper and publish that, this way any gun owner or anyone else for that matter can call and thank them or go to their door and thank them.

Nope, just the opposite. Nobody in NY has a carry permit so the handguns are all left at the house when they leave for work. Want a free gun? Check the list for an address, see if there is a car in the driveway and start collecting.

There are countless firearms in homes THAT ARE NOT REGISTERED. There may be as many guns NOT accounted for than those that are.

In the mid nineties, I went to numerous local gun shows. At these shows there were many, many show attendees who brought their firearms with them to sell to other show attendees – cash deals with no paperwork.

Good luck deciding which homes are armed and which are not.

Long live my Rugers, Remingtons, Berettas, Smith & Wessons, Marlins, and Colts. (most have no paper trails)

The right too privacy exists only for those who wish too abort their fetus. Simply wanting too be in a position of protecting yourself, your family and your property, deprives you of the right too privacy.

Maybe turn this into a positive.
All of the “Outted” gun owners now have a nice mailing list.
They can form a “Gun Owens for Rockland” group, create a website where they can forum and discuss coming together as one armed civilian force. When “Sh!” hits the fan, I would love to know who my fellow armed neighbors are. In times of disaster, a chance a Marxist Revolutionary is elected President. (oh that already happened) wish the NRA members can do the same on an local level. Advocate, have dialog, and local protecting as a group.

Two things now that the criminals know where not to victimize they will go next door to the person who is not on the list and may not be able to defend themselves (more reason for them to arm up)

Second – be nice if some our technologically endowed copyreaders and writers of this site would find and print the personal addresses and info of the owners, editors and writers of this rag so we may tell them directly how we feel about invasion of privacy.

    Why a 2nd amendment?

You have the natural right to defend yourself, your family and your property.

Obama told us how. If they bring a knife, you bring a gun. If they bring a 5 shooter, you bring a 10 shooter.

Perhaps we could persuade Putin to send his troops into the offices of this media monster and take it over, as he has done many times in Russia. This is inexcusable! They should be sued and put out of business!
