Mega Storm Coming on Christmas — Snow From Burlington to Dallas May Bring Travel Turmoil

If you’re done with your holiday travel already, be thankful. If you’re traveling today, stay safe. If you’re planning to head out tomorrow — Christmas Day — take note.

Snow plows line up at O'Hare airport in Chicago, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

Following the snowstorm that hit the northern United States last week, another weather system that Accuweather senior meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski writes will be even more “potent” is on its way. Those traveling Christmas Eve might have better conditions than those headed out on Christmas Day and through the middle of the week.

Here’s more of Pydynoski’s explanation of the approaching weather that will impact the Midwest, Great Lakes states and the Northeast:

Substantial snow will spread from the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas to the Red River and western Arkansas on Christmas Day with snow even whitening Dallas in the afternoon–a rare feat for Christmas.

The major snowstorm will then press northeastward Tuesday night into Thursday, passing from Arkansas into the Ohio Valley, then the eastern Great Lakes and Northeast.

The storm has the potential to unleash a half of a foot or more of snow starting Tuesday in southwestern Kansas and Oklahoma. Totals will even top a foot across the interior Northeast.

Cities in line to receive more than a half of a foot of snow include Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Burlington and Caribou.

The conditions are expected to make travel on the road treacherous in some areas. Those traveling by air might see delays or cancellations that could stick them wherever they celebrated the holidays for a day or two.

NBC’s Today Show pointed out that the South will not be without its problems. Instead of snow, a warmer section of the storm system could cause severe thunderstorms with tornadoes.

Watch this Today Show report about the storm:

According to Flight Stats this afternoon, 1,949 flights were delayed and 82 canceled. Last week’s storm spiked cancellations to 4,426.

If last week’s storm was any indication of what those at airports or on the road impacted by the storm will experience, here’s a look at the pictures to prepare travelers for what they might see Christmas Day and after Christmas conditions:

If you see any craziness while traveling this year, send your pictures to lklimas@theblaze.com.

Isn’t it funny how Al Gore and the Global Warmers are silent during “MEGA” snow storms and record lows? I’m not a Global Warmist (my word) I just believe in being smart about how we do business. The politicians are hoping you buy into it hook line and sinker. They are hoping to create an Internet like craze and ride the wave all the way to the bank. They’re not doing too bad at convincing some of the rats in the maze, I’m just a much harder sell.

A little north and west of Syracuse checking in here.

We already have about ten inches of blowing snow on the ground from a lake effect snow a few days ago. If we get “about six inches” from this one, HERE that’s considered a “dusting. . .”!

We know how to handle snow here, how to drive in snow (snow tires on all four tires of my minivan), and enjoy our “down time” if it really snows. A mixtures of sugar beet juice and salt is used to coat our roads against icing and is VERY EFFECTIVE!

So, for the rest of the U.S. dealing with their “mega storm,” be safe. For us, we’re just getting started and we have all of last winter to catch up for and last summer with little to no rain!

Syracuse and Tug Valley, one of the “snow capitals” of the U.S.

Blessed Christmas, slow down, and as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, let Jesus into your life!

Think you missed the agenda here…..the Sandy Hook story
is wearing out, and they need something to deflect the
Benghazi story from rising to the surface, lest it become
known to the public. So, I guess a 6-inch ‘snowstorm’ fits
    the bill………next week….the astonishing sex-life of snails….

If we will just pass a ban on assault rifles all of these horrible storms will stop.

    Assault rifles cause bad storms.

    The science is settled.

I was caught in a blizzard the other day; it was beautiful-but…I did not want to drive in it-

God sheds his white blanket as He pleases, kind of gives man a chance to see WHO really is in charge, in spite of our pride, accusations, hate, and all around mischievousness.

God be thanked-slow down and see His hand,
    and
    merry christmas to all!

We already have 2 1/2 times the normal snow pack in the Oympic Moutains in Washington. Last year was one of the coldest winters on record, in the Pacific Northwest.

Kiss my **** before I wipe it, you progressives with your global warming!

The progressives will explain that it IS “global warming” that is causing all of this snow. . . But what caused our LACK OF SNOW last winter and our drought this past summer? Global cooling?

Welcome to upstate NY–the land of the snowmobile and cross country skiing. . .

Slow down, look around, share with family and friends and enjoy God’s Christ Mass presents to us, His Son and His beauty.

I find it very interesting that when BHO is in HI this time of year, that the USA gets walloped. His sunny vacations outside CONUS while Americans bear the brunt of these storms seems to contrast atleast in my mind how Kingly he appears to the little guys on the street.

You do realize that he grew up in Hawaii, right? He has a sister and her family still living in Hawaii and that they go and visit one another? It’s no worse than George W. Bush going to Texas for his vacations, except that he spent three times as long on vacation as President Obama has.

The Left activists are brewing these storms up in order to push the gun ban agenda. Pretty soon you’ll see Bloomberg on the TV “ordering” Obama to ban all firearms to fight Global Warming.

Everyone chant together now… “Global Warming” .. in order to not receive snow during winter or to receive snow during when on a select predetermined government approved schedule we must give up all our liberty and standard of living to the decision making body of the central committee in Washington. All hail Obama, may be peace be upon our anointed Savior, only he may deliver us from inclement weather.

Just called one my kids up in the upper Hudson Valley area and she said they are barricading the doors, closing the shutters, sending the kids to the safety of a neighbor’s house after they open presents and she and her husband are heading to the basement and stoking up the woodstove!

It’s gonna’ be a BLIZZZZARD of monumental dusting proportions!

I told her and her husband they will come up with any ol’ excuse to give me more grand kiddies…

We must have crossed paths going to that same school. I had to put my thermos on the radiator to turn my chocolate milk back into a liquid. I had to sit on my peanut butter & jam sandwich just to make it soft enough to not break my teeth. The standing rule was 12″ and below, everything was open. Don’t even think about not showing up. Above 12″ it was a coin toss. This was late 50′s early 60′s. What a bunch of cry baby wimps we have turned into. Pathetic.
