Mormon GOP Senator Who’s Said He Doesn’t Drink Alcohol Gets DUI — And Apologizes

This Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 booking photo provided by the Alexandria, Va. Police Department shows Idaho U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo. Crapo was arrested early Sunday morning, Dec. 23, 2012 and charged with driving under the influence in a Washington, D.C., suburb, authorities said. Credit: AP
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (TheBlaze/AP) — A conservative U.S. senator from Idaho who has said he doesn’t drink because of his Mormon faith has been charged with drunken driving. Naturally, the story is captivating headlines for a plethora of reasons.
Sen. Michael Crapo, a three-term Republican with a reputation as a social and fiscal conservative, registered a blood alcohol content of .11 percent after police pulled his car over in this suburb south of Washington, D.C., authorities said.
The 61-year-old lawmaker, who faces a court date Jan. 4, apologized in a statement issued hours after his arrest early Sunday.
“I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said in the statement Sunday night. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.”
He also said he would take measures to ensure “this circumstance is never repeated.”
Crapo, who was elected in 1998 and is in his third Senate term, is expected to take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate’s budget and finance panels and has been active on environmental and health issues. Crapo was a member of the so-called “Gang of Six” senators that worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal that was never adopted by Congress. He also served for six years in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Police in the suburb of Alexandria said Crapo was stopped early Sunday after his vehicle ran a red light. Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said Crapo failed field sobriety tests and was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday He was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m. Sunday.
“There was no refusal (to take blood alcohol tests), no accident, no injuries,” Donaldson said. “Just a traffic stop that resulted in a DUI.”
Police said Crapo, who was alone in his vehicle, registered a blood alcohol level of .11 percent. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is .08 percent.

In Virginia, the driver’s license of anyone who registers a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher is automatically suspended for seven days. A first-time conviction for DUI carries a mandatory, minimum $250 fine and license revocation for one year, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
A Crapo spokesman declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Crapo had told The Associated Press in past interviews that he abstains from drinking alcohol, a decision that is rooted in his faith.
A Mormon who grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Crapo was named a bishop in the church at age 31. He is an attorney who graduated from Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School. He has five children with his wife, Susan, and three grandchildren.
The Mormon church prohibits the use of alcohol, as well as coffee, tea and other substances. About one-quarter of Idaho residents are Mormon.

But seriously…even our lord Jesus Christ had a drink or two.
Luke 7:33 “For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon !’ 34 “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners !’
Hey Crapo….I hope all those legalistic and phariseetical voters in your state do not abandon you. I just want conservatives to keep voting in Washington.

Posted on December 25, 2012 at 12:13amI am much afraid that you need to quote the Scripture from the Authorized Version and in context. The word wine is used for both nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks. You can determine the meaning by the context. There is no contraindication in the Bible.
Hab:2:15: Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! Jesus Christ did not inspire this verse and than serve or drink any intoxication beverage.
The Senator’s problem is not his drinking but the fact that he is misled by his Mormon faith. Which is a works based salvation like so many others. Christ is the end of the law to all those who believe.

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 12:54pmA name like Glennda says it all. Please people, be nice to Glennda, he/she, is having a particularly hard time this Christmas being all alone, miserable and absent a meaningful existence. He/she knows the only fail safe for such a condition is to come to a conservative website and use his/her special intellectual abilities to teach us ignorant rednecks and hillbillies a lesson. For the sake of Christmas, please entertain Glennda, because absent faith, the poor thing is driven by the fear created by the massive amounts of knowledge he/she has attained. Think of Adammda and Evednda(for you Glennda) in the garden of Eden, when Eve was approached by Satan and told if she partook of the tree of knowledge, she could have the power of God, to know good and bad. We all know where that lie had us …mortality. Folks like Glennda suffer immensely for partaking in this knowledge, for they exist with the ever pressing fear they will die one day. It is no surprise Glennda is more irritated than normal over the Christmas holiday but don’t know why. Poor Glennda suffers, while we celebrate, for we recognize that the chains of death were soon to be broken because the savior was born and we don’t have to live in constant fear like our brother/sister here. Knowledge vs. Wisdom, Fear vs Faith, a life without a meaningful existence vs. existence full of purpose in serving the lord. Remember brothers and sisters, Glennda is just trying to give his/her life some meaning posting here, be nice!

Genesis 19:32-36 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

Genesis 9:20-27 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

John 2:7-8 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor…

And people wonder why there are nearly a thousand different denominations in this country. No one actually reads the book and the guy in the black bathrobe can say whatever he wants. The people will nod and agree. As long as people keep putting money in the plate, he won’t get fired.

I can’t tell if you’re being ironic. But, just in case, I wanted to point out that Obama “accepts responsibility” for his actions all the time. It’s a standard line when people are caught doing wrong, and makes it easy for their supporters to say “see, he accepts responsibility”. It’s such a played out line, I’m surprised anybody buys it these days.

That is NOT true. While it is against our faith (THe Word of Wisdom) to drink alcohol, the church does not PROHIBIT the use of anything. You, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, get to choose what you personally will or will not do. Now, if you drink alcohol, then should not hold a temple recommend or a calling in the church. We are all sinners and need to repent for our forthcomings. We realize that we must live in this world, but we should not live of the world.
I wish the Senator the best in trying to repair his relationship with God and his family.

Yes, to call him a hypocrite – as an individual – is accurate; but this article takes it one step further and essentially calls him a ‘mormon’ hypocrite… big difference.
Just a couple quick examples for clarity – how would a headline come across if it read “Jewish Banker Caught Embezzling Money” … or … “Muslim Shooter Kills Co-Workers” – Such headlines are obviously intended to make an implication about the religion more than the individual.

Sorry for the man’s slip, but you know, GOD works in our slip ups if we let HIM. Discipline is so hard. The left should try it, often.

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 10:50amNunyunuwi–I guess Crapo is going to call up George W. to see if he would like to go road drinking! What’s up with the Mormons? Utah leads the nation in the down load of porn and has for years. You give us Mitt now this. You should try to be like the southern Tea Par-tiers and by a rebel flag drink a couple of jars of illegal moonshine turn on some Ted Nugent and go hunting for some opossum with a gun that holds thirty rounds. Live a little. God Guns and Gold!

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 7:44amYep..oops… no ones perfect… however it would be interesting and I think factual if his name was say….Kennedy… if this would even be an issue… did not a younger Kennedy DUI and Crash into things not many years ago..then their is Ted Kennedy…
(Feeding Frenzy On the evening of July 19, 1969, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts drove his Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, drowning his passenger, a young campaign worker named Mary Jo Kopechne. The senator left the scene of the accident, did not report it to the police for many hours, and according to some accounts considered concocting an alibi for himself in the interim.
At the time, Kennedy managed to escape severe legal and political consequences for his actions thanks to his family’s connections (which helped to contain the inquest and grand jury) and to a nationally televised “Checkers”-like speech broadcast a week after the accident. But virtually no journalist who has closely examined the evidence fully believes Kennedy’s story, and almost 30 years later, the tragedy still trails the senator.)
So drinking and driving never mix and if your a Kennedy well your protected..
Crapo is on his own bad judgement..however if he does claim to be an Active LDS Church goer..this is unfortunate & will be interviewed by his Bishop over the matter on the spiritual end of things, as thats the wrong type of ‘Spirits’ to be partaking of. for an active LDS member. Such is free agency of

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 7:44amAnd 0bama gives syria rebels ( some proven al-qeada/islamists fanatics) rockets, guns and money and not a peep of this on the MSM’s sites in the US, you have to read about what really went down in Benghazi in the Canadian Free Press. Sure he should not drink and drive and he is stupid for not getting a cab, but man… do your jobs and report the important news thats going on.

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 8:10amWow!
I thought that i was the only cat out here who had seen Sun News’ Brian Lilley and his report on the run-up to Benghazi, the storming of the US Embassy at Cairo.
Oddly enough, theblaze.com has never run that video. I wonder why?
“ERemember Benghazi and ALL the Traitors!”

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 8:50amI hate to be labeled a “tin foil hat” guy but it seems more and more you have to read foreign news sites to find out what really is going on within the US’s interests around the world. Either reporters are just carrying water for 0bama (probable) or are the “Benghazi” stories getting nixed( even on conservative sites) because the Government wants to keep people uninformed in order to quell any resistance to whatever their agendas are or might be. Oh, crap… i’m out of foil, lol.

Posted on December 24, 2012 at 2:17pmAgree. As a country, we seem to revel in focusing on the WRONG issues at the WRONG time. Let’s focus on what matters here and now, not whether a celebrity or politician has proved themselves to be only human. Everything we have believed in and trusted upon is collapsing around us, and people want to gossip about some drunk’s drinking problem.

Posted on December 25, 2012 at 11:22amI couldn’t agree more. I’ve heard it said that you slowly lose your soul in Congress. I’ve watched this man slowly deteriorate over the last few years. Being my Senator, I’m still mad at him for treading on American’s liberties by voting for the National Defense Authorization Act. I have never forgiven him for that.
